The Sunday Salon.com

The Sunday Salon used to be a meme but was getting so huge it became unmanageable, so it is now a Facebook group that has become an informal week in review
gathering place for bloggers.

It is also a place to share our thoughts about things of a bookish nature.

So Happy Sunday Everyone!

Moving has put quite a dent in my reading time plus all 3 grandkids are here this weekend. According to GoodReads I am 5 books behind if I want to make the goal I set for this year so I hope to get back on track soon.

Take Me Home

When Claire Parker left Sanctuary, West Virginia, she thought it was for good. She never dreamed she would return and be sharing her problems with a “whisper horse”. She has been through an ugly divorce and now is taking care of her ailing sister who is facing some trials of her own. An abused Thoroughbred mare has come to her rescue and they have formed a special bond. She also got to meet the handsome vet who is treating the horse’s wounds.

Dr. Tim Arbuckle, was devastated by his wife’s death and is having a hard time opening his heart again. Claire has stirred emotions he thought were deeply buried and the bond gets stronger when her whisper horse falls gravely ill.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
What a wonderful story. I needed to read a romance I could loose myself in and this one was excellent. Set in the majestic mountains of West Virginia with believable characters in real situations, I truly loved this story.

There is a lot happening in this story and I was surprised how quickly I reached the end. It is so well written and perfectly paced. I enjoyed Claire and Tim’s story and I am hoping Holly’s story continues as this is supposed to be a series. The supporting characters are rich and I definitely what more.

This book had me wishing for my own whisper horse. What a fantastic idea! I wonder if Willow has friends in the pastures of Wisconsin.

This may have been my first experience with this author but it definitely won’t be my last.

Death Drops (A Natural Remedies Mystery #1)

Nature’s Way Market and Café sells healthy foods and natural cures for what ails you. But there is no cure for murder. . . .

Naturopathic doctor Willow McQuade has come to Long Island’s North Fork to visit her Aunt Claire. Aunt Claire owns the Nature’s Way Market and Cafe and is the reason Willow became a Naturopathic Doctor. They have always been close while she is more estranged from her own mother and sister because they were unhappy with Willow’s career choice.

She has only been visiting a few days when her life is shattered. She returns from a walk and finds her Aunt Claire’s lifeless body on the market floor and a bottle of Mimulus lying nearby. Mimulus is taken to calm fears of misfortune and it clearly didn’t work.

Willow knows her death was no accident, her aunt was murdered! But why would anyone kill the wonderful woman? The cops look quickly to Willow as she is Clare’s heir. Willow teams up with former police officer Jackson Spade to try to prove that she is innocent and catch the killer before anyone else receives a fatal dose.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This is like a new genre, an educational cozy mystery. The author has taken her knowledge of natural remedies and blended it with a clever mystery.

I was sad when Willow’s aunt died so early in the story. She was a character I really would have enjoyed knowing but she has passed on her knowledge and caring nature to Willow, making this protagonist a very interesting woman with tons of potential. She has an expert’s understanding of these natural substances that the police do not have or want making her interactions with detectives very entertaining.

Chrystle Fiedler has created an excellent foundation with this debut. She has given us a wonderful setting and dynamic characters.  Starting each chapter with a Ask Dr. McQuade letter not only informs the reader but sets up the next chapter.  All that should keep this series blooming for a long time

A very quick read. I can’t wait for the next installment!

Hi Everyone!

Stella Griffin and the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries

clip_image001Our main character in the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries is Fire Chief Stella Griffin. Stella is part of a strong Irish family that has served the fire department in Chicago, Illinois for many years. She understands the rigors of the life, but when it came time for her to make her choice of career, she knew it was what she wanted.

404367_452465988129034_528250595_n (1)Firefighters are a strange breed of men, my grandfather used to tell me. They run into the fire instead of away from it. My grandfather, Henry Koch, was a firefighter. He was part of the team that fought the Our Lady of the Angel’s Fire, one of the most devastating because it killed so many children in a Catholic school. That was one fire he wouldn’t talk or joke about.

fire badge croppedMy great-grandfather, Michael Sebastian, was also with the CFD. In the late 1800s, he drove a team of white horses that hauled the fire wagon. The job was even harder when he was a firefighter because they had no special equipment, no protection.

My husband and my father have both been volunteer firefighters. Basically, this means they get all the danger and the hard work without getting paid. Volunteers have to train for hours every week, as much as the professional firefighters. They have to go out at all hours of the day and night, in every kind of weather, never knowing what’s waiting for them. They do it for their communities.

I wanted to be a firefighter when I was 14. I thought it was the noblest profession in the world. Everyone laughed because GIRLS weren’t firefighters. I cried for days. That’s changed now, for the better of the firefighting community, and probably the food!

Smoky MountainsNow, I’ve found a way of honoring the people in my family who have fought fires, lost some, and grieved over victims. Stella is the chief of a volunteer fire brigade in the Smoky Mountains. She is who I imagined I could be, at one time. She’s strong and brave, loyal to her volunteers, concerned about people.

She came to life for me in Sweet Pepper. In the first book, That Old Flame of Mine, she goes to the small town in Tennessee after a bad break-up with her boyfriend and an injury that has put her off the job. She doesn’t realize how raw her recruits are or how different being a volunteer firefighter is, but she learns.

She always plans on going back to Chicago, but Sweet Pepper, and the resident ghost in her log cabin there, may change her mind.

I hope this book will be something that would’ve made my family of firefighters proud.

That Old Flame of Mine
NO MATCH FOR MURDER

After knocking the lights out of her boyfriend when she catches him cheating on her, Chicago fire fighter Stella Griffin hops on her Harley and heads for Sweet Pepper, Tennessee, where she ends up becoming the small town’s fire chief. When her dear friend Tory Lambert dies after her gingerbread-style house is set ablaze, Stella suspects arson and foul play.

As Stella investigates, she gets help from a most unlikely source—the ghost of Eric Gamlyn, Sweet Pepper’s old fire chief. And if that isn’t enough to rattle her, attractive police officer John Trump seems to have taken an interest in her. But Stella’s got to stay focused if she hopes to smoke out a killer before her own life is extinguished.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
As the daughter of a firefighter I was thrilled with this book. My dad passed away 25 years ago and it still seems like yesterday. I wish he would haunt his old firehouse, maybe he does? He did not die on “a scene” but he was a chief too just like Eric Gamlyn and I so wanted to be a firefighter and work side by side with him. At that time female firefighters were few and far between. Ladies were on the auxiliary and handled bake sales and delivered food and drink to the big fires. I would have loved Stella’s life even with the crummy boyfriend.

The story is so well written and full of wonderful real characters. The drill/practice sessions ring true to me as someone who has observed many. Chief Eric’s haunts struck my heart. Another firefighter lost too soon with so many plans and dedication. Stella has a lot on her plate in Sweet Pepper and with a bit of “help” she comes out on top. A sassy, smart, sleuth that this reader plans to enjoy tagging along with for a very long time.

J.J. Cook has written an extraordinary debut. This book will be burning up bookstore shelves next Tuesday.  It’s hotter than a 5 alarm fire!! Respond and extricate your copy as soon as possible.

Murder in Death's Door County

Annie has a job she hates but moonlights as a ghostwriter and she loves that job. Unfortuately she doesn’t make enough to pay the bills. When she gets an offer to ghost write a book for a client her editor warns her is a challenge she has a decision to make. The money offered is higher than she ever imagined and it would allow her to quit her day job. The one stipulation is that she must move to Door County to work with the client. Decision made, she quits her job, packs a bag and heads to The Lighthouse Inn hoping she hasn’t made a huge mistake.

Just a few days after she arrives her editor comes for a visit and within hours he is found dead in his room at the inn and Annie becomes the prime suspect. With the help of her new Door County friends Annie will try to find the killer before she finds herself at Death’s Door.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is a fun debut for the Annie Malone series.  Annie is a unique protagonist. She has wonderful intentions but when she gets in a bit of hot water or when she sees something a little unpleasant she faints dead away. She also has a tendency to babble on when she is nervous or in awkward situations. She is not the smoothest amateur sleuth out there but she is really easy to love both by the reader and a certain gentleman who comes to her rescue more than once.

One of my favorite places to visit in Wisconsin is Door County. Elizabeth Rose has captured the setting perfectly. It was so easy to picture exactly Annie was or where she was going.

Rose also added a very clever twist to the story in addition to the usual red herrings found in a mystery like this.  A interesting surprise and a great foundation for moving the series forward.  It is also written in a way that will have you unable to put it down. It is fast paced and easily read in one sitting.

Cozy readers will enjoy this trip to Wisconsin’s Door County, I sure did.

About This Author
Elizabeth Rose was born in Wisconsin. She has lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the Fox Valley region of Wisconsin. After working as a technical writer, desktop publisher, ghostwriter, and waitress, she decided to put pen to paper for herself. The book “Murder in Death’s Door County” is very loosely based on a bizarre ghostwriting project she had (names, specific circumstances, and situations have been changed significantly). In addition to continuing with the Annie Malone mystery series, Elizabeth loves to write children’s literature, and draw and paint. In her spare time, Elizabeth enjoys spending time in Door County, which really is one of the most beautiful places.

The Corpse with the Silver Tongue

Cait Morgan, a criminology professor in Canada, travels to France to present a paper for a colleague unable to attend  a conference. She happens to run into an old boss and can’t escape an invitation to his wife’s birthday party. She can’t stand the man but decides to attend anyway.  When the guy drops dead in the middle of dinner and the necklace he brought his wife as a birthday present disappears her quick trip to France turns into a real nightmare. Her French is not that good but knowing she is a main suspect is not lost in the translation. She wishes her friend Bud was there to help her out of this mess but he is back in Canada up to his neck in an investigation of his own.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Ace’s first Cait Morgan mystery has that Agatha Christie feel and I was quickly caught up in the mystery. Plenty of suspects seated around the table but who would kill this pompous man and why?

I really enjoyed the location and the travels through the compound where many of the suspects resided. The gardens – beautiful, the underground tunnels – scary and revealing of secrets. The links to the past and the provenance of the necklace was so interesting.

The characters unique, from the gold digger wife to the American writer that lives upstairs. Even Bud back in Canada was easy to connect with through just the phone calls. Cait is an intriguing protagonist with her criminology background and her unusual observation skills. The detectives in France were not sure what to make of Cait Morgan but I thought they were excellent characters. Moreau did not speak much English so Bertrand had to translate. Both stayed as objective as possible until finally realizing Cait may be able to help them but by then it was almost too late.

This was a captivating debut and look forward to reading more about Cait, Bud, and hopefully Bertrand in the future.

cozy wednesdayWelcome to this special edition of Cozy Wednesday.
There are just so many wonderful cozies coming out each month
that we have to add some extra cozy days.

I am thrilled to welcome Sheila here today because she has a brand new series – The County Cork Mysteries set in Ireland – having a few Irish ancestors myself I couldn’t wait to read this book!

Hi Sheila!

Commerical Portraits for promotional material and novelHi Everyone!

Things have been a little hectic lately as I just launched my third series. Yes, third. Actually it’s my fourth, but the first one was written under a pen name and went away after three books. The others are ongoing (I hope!).

I’ve always read fast, and when I started writing, I found I write fast too. I had no idea what the right speed was, so I just sat down and did it. I like the pace, and besides, when I’m not writing or at least thinking about writing I feel kind of lost. And for most people, including me, writing is not just about slapping down a bunch of words and sending it off to your publisher—there’s a lot of editing and rewriting involved, so often I find myself writing one new one, editing an earlier one, and proofing a third. Yes, it can get confusing!

Warner house with HerbertWhy three series? Because they all reflect parts of my life, linked by the common thread of genealogy. My first series, the Orchard Mysteries, take place in a small town in western Massachusetts, in a colonial house. The house is one I know personally, because my six-times-great-grandfather built it around 1760, and I stayed there when it was a bed and breakfast. The town is real too—a classic New England town with the green in the center, the old white church at one end, and a lot of people whose families have lived there for many generations and whose names are on the road signs. So for the series, the location came first, and then I started adding people to it. I threw in my protagonist, an out-of-work Boston banker, and told her to manage an orchard. Neither of us knew much about orchards when I started, but we’re learning together.

Phila City HallThe second series, the Museum Mysteries, came about because I worked for several years at The Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, first as a fundraiser and then as a researcher for hire. I loved working there, in part because it gave me access to amazing collections rich with local history. When I started writing I realized that while most cozies are set in small towns, the cultural community in Philadelphia is like a small town itself, where everyone knows everyone else. Plus there are all sorts of wonderful institutions there to dump a body in.

The most recent is the County Cork Mysteries. The series is based on one of the first books I ever wrote, over ten years ago. Over time some of the characters changed, but the setting never did. My father’s family came from Ireland, but I never had a chance to travel there until about fifteen years ago. He knew very little about the family’s history in Ireland, so I wanted to fill in the blanks. What I never expected was to gobsmacked by the place, in particular West Cork—also known as The Wild West of Ireland—where my grandfather was born. It’s picture postcard pretty, but just a bit wilder. And it’s not a quaint tourist attraction; there are vibrant towns and interesting people and a lot of history there.

Connollys 2000Of course, I was hooked the moment I saw that the small town where we were staying had a pub called Connolly’s. I didn’t know then that Connolly’s was legendary, not for its drinks or its atmosphere, but because it was a mecca for musicians in that part of the world—performers whose names you would recognize. I was privileged to be there at the tail end of its heyday. Alas, the man who was the spirit behind it died a few years back, but the family still owns the place and there’s talk of bringing back the music, and I can promise you I’ll be there.

Ireland is kind of like a cozy setting on steroids. Remember that the population of the entire country is still under five million people, and a lot of them are concentrated in Dublin and Cork city. In the more rural areas, everybody knows who’s who, and who their grandparents were, and who they bought the land from. It’s unsettling to an American used to a sort of anonymity. One example: recently I was in a cemetery in County Cork and ran into a stranger, and we got to talking (as everyone does). It turns out that he knows my second cousin Catherine, one of the only other people I know in Ireland—and she hasn’t lived in the neighborhood for fifty years. Things like that keep happening in Ireland.

buried in a bogI have been so happy with the response to the first book in this series, Buried In a Bog. People write to tell me they want to get on a plane for Ireland immediately. I was so worried that I’d make it sound trite or superficial, but instead I did what I’d hoped to do: convey the spirit of the place. Reviewers have said that my love for Ireland shines through.

Capturing a place on a page is one of the joys of writing. Filling it with characters that people can identify with and care about is another. I feel very lucky to be doing what I do.

~Sheila

Sheila, Thank you so much for visiting today! I don’t know how you do it, keeping all this series going, but I am so glad you do!!!

With an Irish grandfather myself that I never was able to meet I was so excited to read this book. It is a delightful debut to a series that I know I will love.

The author lets us escape to the beautiful countrysides of County Cork. Even when it is raining or foggy it sounds like charming place. She also gives us the history of the townlands and the people. She takes the time to explain the traditional naming patterns found in Ireland like the first born son is named for the father’s father. This custom could get quite confusing in large families. It gives an interesting twist to the story.

We are with Maura just as she starts on her journey to discover Ireland and its people. I am really looking forward to getting to know all the characters better in the next installments, especially Rose. She seems to have led a life very similar to Maura’s. Life runs at a much faster speed in Boston than it does in Leap but both stuck pretty close to home and put family needs ahead of their own. I look forward to a time of awakening for both young ladies.

Maura’s adventure to Ireland was quite a treat, the mysteries added were just icing on the cake. I am ready for my trip back to County Cork today. I can’t wait for book #2.

a perfect escape

A Rendezvous to Die For

Exciting action on the Rez! A brand new sleuth sorts out clues from an 1830s world!

Photographer Cassandra Cassidy has left her big city life behind in New York and is just getting settled in a small town in Minnesota.

She wasn’t really sure what she would find at the Prairie River Trappers’ Rendezvous but was hoping to take enough good pictures to sell so she could pay her rent. The last thing she expected to find was a dead body. A body of someone she knew and really hated. Then to find herself as one of the suspects really put things in a new light. She decided it was up to her to track down the killer before she found herself totally out of the picture.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A very interesting mystery with a historical twist. The Rendezvous took us back in time and gave us a glimpse of traditions of days gone by.  The re-enactors try to remain in character but after a body is found their true character is revealed giving Cassandra a plethora of suspects.

Cassandra came alive to me but Deputy Shaw drove me crazy. Young and new to the job is no excuse for his bubbling stupidity. I really liked Marty, I would love to have him for my landlord. There is plenty of room for all the characters to evolve and a little romance to be added to future installments.

This debut is a light, quick, entertaining whodunit from an author that shows much promise. I look forward to more of Cassandra Cassidy’s escapades.

It Takes Two to Strangle:
A Damon Lassard Dabbling Detective Mystery

Trade Paperback: 230 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0988194311

It Takes Two to Strangle

The carnival has come to Hollydale and as head of the citizen’s association Damon Lassard is the local liaison to make sure that event goes off without a hitch. When one of the owners of the carnival is found dead with two separate and different ligature marks Damon steps in to help his friend Detective Gerry Sloman solve the case and catch the killers.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This was an interesting debut with quite a few red herrings.

Damon just can’t help himself, he gets right into the middle of the investigation. Detective Sloman gives him an inch and he takes a mile and gets himself in a couple of dicey situations. He is also a very typical man when it comes to women, thankfully his mother is around to point out things that are clear to everyone except Damon himself. Kaminski has written some very likable characters.

The mystery is complex with plenty of suspects and I must say I was surprised by one of the culprits. He was totally off my radar until the evidence was spelled right out for me.

I will be looking forward to more adventures with Damon Lassard and Detective Gerry Sloman. Damon needs Gerry to save him from himself and the criminals.

Playing With Poison

Jessie Hewitt is a pool shark that usually can run the table and knows where the balls will fall. She had no idea that a body would fall on her couch or that a cop would show up in her kitchen and accuse her of murder. How is she going to get out of this mess?

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Best first line ever: “Going bra shopping at age fifty-two gives new meaning to the phrase fallen woman,” I announced as I gazed at my reflection.

I knew I was going to like Jessie right away! She is smart and fun and I would love to hang out with her and shoot a little pool. She is also a romance novelist and her work as Adelé Nightingale is steamy but told to us readers in the most hilarious way. Her agent Louise is “fantastical”! These characters are a hoot!! and their dialogue is at times side splitting.

A good plot, a fun setting and engaging characters come together to make the a lighthearted cozy that will put a smile on your face. A very entertaining debut! I am looking forward to Double Shot and Three Odd Balls.

About This Author
Cindy Blackburn has a confession to make-she does not play pool. It’s that whole eye-hand coordination thing. What Cindy does do well is school. So when she’s not writing silly stories she’s teaching serious history. European history is her favorite subject, and the ancient stuff is best of all. The deader the better! A native Vermonter who hates cold weather, Cindy divides her time between the south and the north. During the school year you’ll find her in South Carolina, but come summer she’ll be on the porch of her lakeside shack in Vermont. Cindy has a fat cat named Betty and a cute husband named John. Both are extremely lovable. When Cindy isn’t writing or grading papers, she likes to take long walks or paddle her kayak around the lake. Her favorite travel destinations are all in Europe, her favorite TV show is NCIS, her favorite color is orange, and her favorite authors (if she must choose) are Joan Hess and Spencer Quinn. Cindy dislikes vacuuming, traffic, and lima beans.
