Recently divorced, Merilee Talbot Dunlap moves with her two children to the Atlanta suburb of Sweet Apple, Georgia. It’s not her first time starting over, but her efforts at a new beginning aren’t helped by an anonymous local blog that dishes about the scandalous events that caused her marriage to fail.

Merilee finds some measure of peace in the cottage she is renting from town matriarch Sugar Prescott. Though stubborn and irascible, Sugar sees something of herself in Merilee—something that allows her to open up about her own colorful past.

Sugar’s stories give Merilee a different perspective on the town and its wealthy school moms in their tennis whites and shiny SUVs, and even on her new friendship with Heather Blackford. Merilee is charmed by the glamorous young mother’s seemingly perfect life and finds herself drawn into Heather’s world.

In a town like Sweet Apple, where sins and secrets are as likely to be found behind the walls of gated mansions as in the dark woods surrounding Merilee’s house, appearance is everything. But just how dangerous that deception can be will shock all three women….

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Merilee Talbot Dunlap’s and Sugar Prescott’s lives collide when Merilee rents a cottage from Sugar following her divorce. Sugar doesn’t usually get involved in her tenant’s lives but there is something that draws her to Merilee and her children. When an anonymous local blog spills all the details about Merilee’s divorce and she finds she doesn’t have much in common with the other moms at her children’s pricey private school (paid for by their grandparents), she finds herself opening up to Sugar. She does make friends with a couple of the moms but Sugar advises her to be cautious of Heather Blackford, one of the Sweet Apple’s elite that has basically taken her under her wing. There is just something about her Sugar doesn’t like….

I loved this story for so many reasons.

The first is the story starts with a blog post, what blogger wouldn’t love that.

The second is the characters and the friendships that build throughout the story. The friendship between Sugar and Merilee drew me deeply into the story. Both woman started out very uncertain about their future both apart and together. Sugar had quite a life, losing the love of her life and living on her property her entire life while developers bought up land all around her. She shares her memories with Merilee and in turn us readers. It gives Merilee a different perspective for her life. We also learn they both have secrets.

Third, there was mystery. I knew from there was something building but was totally surprised and then things fell into place like dominoes. There were fantastic twists all along the way that I really enjoyed.

Full of Southern charm, friendships, history, mystery, and humor. These complex characters will jump off the pages and into your heart quickly. As the weather warms, make yourself a pitcher of sweet tea, find a comfy chair and grab this book. A perfect springtime escape!

Synopsis

A forbidden kiss. A death in plain sight. And the faculty meeting’s just begun.

Forced to attend the Student Retention Office’s summer retreat, Professor Molly Barda brings her game of buzzword bingo to fend off boredom. But when the lecherous Kent Lovely, Mahina State’s one-man hostile work environment, collapses face-first into his haupia cheesecake, the afternoon goes from dull to disastrous. Now Molly has to fight to keep an innocent out of prison—and herself off the unemployment line.

The Case of the Defunct Adjunct is the spoiler-free prequel to the Molly Barda mysteries, a cozy mystery series set in remote Mahina, Hawaii. If you like Dorothy Parker, Sarah Caudwell, P.G. Wodehouse, or E.F. Benson’s Mapp and Lucia stories, you’ll enjoy this tale of passion, pilferage, and petty politics.

Synopsis

The hope of a future for the broken begins in Mourning.

Skip-tracer Renee Stratford-Knight’s life plan changed upon her sister’s murder. Instead of using her skills to find people, Renee opened New Beginnings a firm specializing in “vanishing” abused women. Now her ex-husband -and former business partner – Jonas Knight reenters her life asking about her most vulnerable client.

Jonas knows his ex-wife helped embezzler Gina Howard elude the authorities and intends to bring the young woman to justice. When Renee is threatened, Jonas grows suspicious of his client’s reason for finding his niece.

In order to uncover the secret a teenager girl disappeared to keep, and a killer wants silenced, Jonas and Renee must struggle through distrust and the pain of their pasts to work together to save the life of teenage girl – and their own.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is an exceptional start for this series. Freeburn draws you right in as the reader strives to understand what broke up Renee and Jonas Knight. Both are skip-tracers but Renee is taking her skills in a different direction. They soon find their cases are intertwined so it is hard for them to avoid each other.  Plus there is a huge secret that is revealed and changes everything.

These characters are so fully developed from the start. You know Renee’s faith is a huge part of her life and she leans on it heavily in her work. She helps to relocate battered women, a cause that touched her family personally. Jonas was abandoned as a child and really doesn’t have much faith at all. He has serious trust issues and takes on a burden that is not really his.

This is an inspirational story in that Renee prays for God’s help throughout the book. She wants to do the right things, trust the right people and follow God’s path for her life but she has a really hard time with forgiveness.

There are several supporting characters that also shine in this story. Renee’s brother Alex and her friend Danita work with Renee at New Beginnings. She is confident is Danita’s abilities but is afraid to let Alex get too involved. She wants to keep her little brother safe. Renee’s parents also help battered women and are working to set up a shelter.

The author has given us a suspenseful plot while blending in the spiritual and romantic elements flawlessly.

This is a cause near and dear to my heart and I am thrilled with the way Christina Freeburn highlights this type of violence in this series. Although I have learned from family experience domestic violence cuts both ways. It is not always the woman or children that are the abused parties.

I can’t wait to read, Led Astray (New Beginnings Book 2)!!

From the Author

100 PROOF STUD is the Amazon bestselling third novel in the Darcy Walker Series. It is a stand-alone novel. Catch Darcy’s story from the beginning in the bestselling debut novel, GRADE A STUPID and its followup, NO BRAINER!

**WARNING** The Darcy Walker Series celebrates the unlikely hero–characters more abnormal than normal. It’s a place where common sense and the gut collide, where you live life to the fullest because that’s all you’ve got left in a world that’s gone to crap. It’s loaded with truth, sarcasm, faith, and bizarre coping skills–and ergo, may not be appropriate for people content to live their lives as nouns.

DARCYVILLE…where stupidity is celebrated…with a deadly dose of sin.

Sometimes life smacks you right in the kisser with a whole lot of ohhhh craaaaap.

Just ask Darcy Walker.

100 Proof Stud picks up four months after No Brainer’s cliffhanger ending, and Darcy discovers the aftermath pales in comparison to the crisis her heart is in. All of a sudden it’s raining men, and this teenage heroine’s personal life turns her inside out.

Before she can sort out her feelings, she chases a spray-painting vandal and stumbles upon a case of identity theft right in her own backyard. Darcy jumps into the fray headfirst to prove she can hang with the big boys.
But it’s not just to hang…nope, she’s chasing reward money. Tapping her band of misfit brothers for help, she turns Valley upside down trying to unearth the criminals. Problem is, the cloak and dagger goes high-octane, and she raises the bar on “crazy” in the process.
Bullets ring out…dead bodies appear…and Darcy rubs shoulders with the ultimate sociopath. In the midst of murder and mayhem, will she finally follow her heart or build a fortress of lies around it? Will she even get the chance?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

When I first picked up this book I thought it would be just a mystery with a younger protagonist. Was I wrong!!

Darcy Walker is nothing like the sleuths I had read before. She is off the wall crazy.  She is a teenager that seems to have no fear. She puts herself in some incredibly dangerous situations. Plus she is unbelievably funny.  She has her own set of DarcySpeak  – like fastard – ” Boys that are fast, tell you they love you, then set up your next date only for you to find out the fastard has a steady on the sly. Substitute a “b” if you are the cursing type” is just one example. It seems wherever Darcy goes Mayhem follows.

In the midst of the madness there is a romance really starting to bloom. I really enjoy reading about the start of young love. Since this is the first book in the series I have read I am missing the back-story but what I read I liked.

As this was my first Darcy/A.J. Lape read so it took me a while to get with the flow of her writing but soon I was just going with the flow. It has been a long time since high school and as a mom I hope there are no real Darcys out there. But this sure was a fun read.

A.J. Lape knows her audience. Teens will love this book. Their moms will like it too but it would be uncool to tell their kids that 🙂

A. J. Lape’s Darcy Walker Series broke into the Top 50 books in Teens Literature & Fiction within 36 hours of its release. It has spent numerous weeks in the Top 100 in Mystery Series and Teens, Mysteries & Thrillers Categories as well as being one of the Top Rated in its genre. A self-proclaimed neurotic and troublemaker at heart, a perfect day for A. J. consists of writing, watching her kids play sports, drinking Coke, then lounging in her pajamas by 8PM.

She lives in Cincinnati with her husband, two feministic daughters, an ADD dog, a spoiled hamster, and an unapologetic and unrepentant addiction to Coca-Cola, with a lifelong love affair with bacon.  She studied English, Journalism, and Political Science at Morehead State University and left the business world when her daughters were born.  Her love for suspense and a good story was born from watching Mystery Science Theater with her sister during childhood.  That and any B movie with comedic undertones they could get their hands on.

What could happen when a bunch of hair stylists gather at convention in Las Vegas? Azalea March and her friends, Vivian and Juan Carlos are hoping for a wild weekend!!

They never expected one of the biggest names in the styling world, Dhane,  would end up murdered before the convention barely gets started. Azalea is shocked to find out Vivian and Dhane have a bit of a past. A past that makes Vivian a prime suspect. Azalea quickly finds herself trying to prove her friend is innocent in a case that has more twists than the curliest perm. She just hopes to straighten everything out before they are notified someone  else has dyed – died.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Beth Yarnall has styled a very funny cozy mystery.

Every cozy needs it quirky characters and she has given us some beauties. Azalea is a fun protagonist, she just can’t help herself, she has to be right in the middle of the investigation and the cops notice that wherever trouble is brewing Azalea is going to be there right in the thick of it. Vivian is a woman with a very interesting past that she has been keeping from her friends. Juan Carlos kept cracking me up, he was hilarious. The interactions between him and his friend Richard – priceless. I have to tell you these were the most normal characters in the story. Some of the people at the convention, like those dressed as Anime characters, would have stopped me in my tracks but they didn’t seem to phase Azalea a bit. The murdered man’s sister was coping with a lot and she was quite unique. Then every cozy needs the hunky guy and Alex, a sexy detective from Azalea’s past fills the bill nicely.

The mystery took several directions steering the reader to a variety of suspects. I had just an inkling of the killer’s identify but was very surprised by the ending.  In addition to the mystery, characters were really fleshed out, one even had a makeover. Yarnall is very descriptive in her writing style which I really liked. I could picture the whole thing very easily.

I read this story amazing fast. I was engaged from beginning to end. I really enjoyed it and look forward to visiting all these characters again.

About This Author

Best selling author, Beth Yarnall, writes romantic suspense, mysteries and the occasional hilarious tweet. A storyteller since her playground days, Beth remembers her friends asking her to make up stories of how the person ‘died’ in the slumber party game Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, so it’s little wonder she prefers writing stories in which people meet unfortunate ends. In middle school she discovered romance novels, which inspired her to write a spoof of soap operas for the school’s newspaper. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

For a number of years, Beth made her living as a hairstylist and makeup artist and co-owned a salon. Somehow hairstylists and salons always seem to find their way into her stories. Beth lives in Orange County, California with her husband, two sons, and their rescue dog where she is hard at work on her next novel.

Synopsis

Private investigator Jane Ronson suffers from oppositional defiant disorder, the uncontrollable urge to punch first then ask questions later. When a rabbi with a shady past offers her a bag of cash to spy on a rival rabbi, Jane jumps at the chance to make what think will be easy money. To get her cash, Jane impersonates an Orthodox Jewish woman and infiltrates a black market kidney ring in Baltimore’s Orthodox community. Between Russian gangsters and double crosses, Jane is number one on everyone’s hit list. To save her life, she forms an alliance with a religious woman and confronts a family.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jill Yesko has created a wonderful protagonist. Jane lives by her rules, she is tough and gritty and really doesn’t care what other people think about her at all. She loves her dog and she loves her man and she puts herself right in the middle of some very dicey situations. I like her and am engaged by her story.

My problem is with the content of the stories. The first novella lays the groundwork, introduces us to the characters, but the mystery falls short. It is more a series of coincidences.  The second novella has a great mystery and the characters continue to evolve a bit but it is a little disjointed. I wish the author would have melded these two novellas into just one book. The coincidences in the first would make a great subplot when meshed together with the second. The characters would flow better as well.

Separately I would give the first story 3 stars and the second 4 stars but together they would make “A Perfect Escape” and receive 5 stars.

Sandy Fairfax, former teen idol and star of the ‘70s hit TV show “Buddy Brave, Boy Sleuth,” is now a middle-aged recovering alcoholic who realizes that making a comeback can be murder. He’s the guest star on “Off-Kelter,” a corny family situation comedy, and the lowest rated TV show of the 1993 fall season. Before rehearsals barely begin one of the actors drops dead at Sandy’s feet. He investigates, enlisting the aid of two of his new cast mates: a dwarf and an animal actor. During his snooping, we meet Sandy’s ex, his parents and his teenage son, all with their own “situations” going on. During rehearsals Sandy also encounters a beautiful choreographer—could this be love? Will Sandy solve the murder before the Friday night taping of “Off-Kelter” or will the elusive killer cancel our hero before the final credits? This book was inspired by the author’s experience working as a tour guide/page at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sally Carpenter has penned quite a mystery. This story is full of humor from start to finish.

Those of us of a certain age remember the posters of those teen idols hanging on our walls and anxiously awaiting the next issue of Tiger Beat.  We still swoon when the much older Shawn Cassidy appears on one of talk shows. This story brings back all those memories including some of the crazy sitcoms that have appeared on our televisions over the years.

Sandy Fairfax is quite a character trying to get his life together and stay sober so his ex-wife will allow him to spend time with his kids. His parents had a much different plan for him and he strives to raise himself just a little bit in their eyes.  He hopes this guest appearance will lead to more work but before the show is even taped one of the actors drops dead right in front of him. What is even worse he seems to the only concerned that a person died. The show continues to go on and the cops hardly even investigate.  He becomes consumed with the need to find out what happened and why. He gets help from 2 very unlikely places.  An actor from the show who happens to be a little person and a dog that is also on the show.

Very interesting characters is a unusual setting. There are twists, turns, fire and rain to add to the excitement.  This is the first book I have read by Sally Carpenter but I know it won’t be the last.

This series was introduced with the novella Color Me Bad, which was a perfect escape. You can read my review here.

The character getting a fresh start in this story is LilyAnn Bronte. She was on top off the world, honor student, cheerleader, Peachy – Keen Queen and engaged to marry her high school sweetheart. Then  her fiance enlisted in the military and was killed in Iraq. She lost her zest for life, became withdrawn and gained some weight. When a new guy comes to Blessings, she decides that now may be the time to get her life back on track. But will she discover that her new love was already in town and was just waiting for her to realize it?

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I normally read mysteries but I love to add books like this to the mix. The Curl Up and Dye was such a fun read once I started reading I just could stop.

LilyAnn just stopped really living her life for 11 years after her finance was killed. She lived in her childhood home left to her by her parents, stayed working at the same local drugstore, and she never finished college. Her friends moved on and most of them away. The only thing she treated herself to was a weekly hair appointment at The Curl Up and Dye.  Ruby, the owner and Vera and Vesta, the other stylists wished there was something they could do to help her. Then Ruby had an idea….

This book is not your typical romance novel. It is jammed packed with humor and sensitivity. It has been labeled as Wally Lamb meets Steel Magnolias and that sure fits. A beauty shop anywhere is the place for gossip and The Curl Up and Dye is no exception.

I just love the expression “Bless her heart” and knowing its true Southern meaning. But it is lines like this that really had me smiling.

“Dang girl, you’re not nearly as big as you were the last time we were here.”

“Eddie Gleason! I can’t believe that just came out of your mouth. I’m sorry LilyAnn. I have yet to meet a man who could breathe and make sense at the same time…”

This story was a breath of fresh air and I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. Blessings, Georgia is a special place full of good people and Southern charm. I hope I get to visit there again real soon!!

Nanette Johnston Packard, a sexy divorcee, liked to meet men at the gym and through personal ads. Soon after she began dating millionaire Bill McLaughlin, he moved her and her kids into his bay-front home in Newport Beach. But one man was never enough for Nanette…Eric Naposki, her NFL linebacker lover, fulfilled Nanette’s wilder cravings. Together they schemed to make her fiance’s fortune their own. When McLaughlin was gunned down, authorities had suspicions – but no proof. Pulitzer-nominated writer Caitlin Rother explores this chilling story of a woman who seemed to have it all – until justice finally had its day.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Rother is excellent at what she does with these stories, her book Dead Reckoning made my Best Reads of 2011 and Lost Girls was another awesome read.

I was not familiar with this case until I picked up this book. The author starts with a Prologue that gets everyone up to speed and I appreciate this.

Nanette Johnson Packard may not have completed high school but she was smart enough to draw several men into her web of lies. She even convinced one of them to kill for her.  The scary thing is the way she lies reminds me of someone I personally know, which has me imagining the destruction this person could cause. That is what makes books like this so chilling, these are real people. People whose neighbors say they never noticed anything or there was no way that person would do that.

Rother investigates this story so completely and writes so well at times you forget this story is not fiction. The people she brings to life on these pages are REAL!!! These things actually took place. This time it was a cold case and they almost got away with it.  The author takes us in depth into the case. The science that has evolved that helped solve the case.  The truth the came to light because of hours of exhaustive investigation when the case was resurrected in 2008.

With true crime stories, you know the criminal(s), the killer(s), the outcome. Because I wasn’t familiar with this case though I was waiting for the final twist. This entire story was twisted. The lies, the deception, the greed. Thankfully the victim’s family finally received justice. But had someone not chosen to dig into this case more thoroughly the outcome could have been so different.  This is family that truly suffered and deserved closure.

I started this book and it was after 2 in the morning when I finished. I just couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this one and anything else written by this author.
