She hasn’t met her new neighbors, but when she sees a couple struggling on the balcony and later spies what looks like someone lying on the ground, Molly wastes no time calling in her ex, homicide detective Barry Greenberg.

To Molly’s shock, Barry reports that nothing is amiss with her neighbors and asks her to lay off with the amateur detecting. Molly knows she wasn’t just seeing things, but with no body to prove her case she’ll have to unravel the evidence on her own—because someone in Tarzana is tangled up in murder…

How to Write a Mystery
By
Betty Hechtman

(Post provided by publicist.)

I bet you didn’t know this. But when I write mysteries, I have to come up with two stories. One of them is what actually happened in the order that it happened. How does the killer do the deed. Why did they do it and how did they expect to get away with it. In other words, how did they bury their tracks. What other suspects are there. And what mistake does the killer make that leads up to my sleuth catching them.

That story the readers never see.

The other story is the one the readers get. It starts off with all the continuing characters going about their lives. In GONE WITH THE WOOL, Casey is about to put on another Yarn Retreat to coincide with the week long festivities in Cadbury by the Sea to mark the return of the Monarch Butterflies. Every October, thousands of Monarchs arrive in Cadbury and take up residence in a grove of trees to stay until February. The culmination of the celebration is marked by a parade and the crowning of the Butterfly Queen.

And wouldn’t you just know that a murder occurs to mar everything.

Casey needs a reason to get involved with the investigation. I sprinkle her sleuthing in with all the other things going on in her life like putting on the retreat, dealing with the two men in her life, spending time with her friends, trying not to be thwarted by the manager of Vista Del Mar, the hotel and conference center where she puts on her retreats and learning the ins and outs of having a cat companion.

While Casey’s group of retreaters are learning how to knit with a loom and crochet a butterfly, I’m busy mixing in the details of the first story into what is going on. I throw in clues, but all the while try to hid them. They might be out of order. There are false leads. I present suspects, all of whom have a motive to want to kill the victim.

If it all works out, the first story should have been chopped up into little pieces and woven into the story the reader sees so that in the end it all makes sense and surprises the readers at the same time. And hopefully leaves the reader with a satisfied smile.

You be the judge if I managed it in GONE WITH THE WOOL.

The national bestselling author of Wound Up in Murder spins a deadly yarn of knitting bees, butterflies, and beauty queens.

Every October, thousands of monarch butterflies flock to California’s Monterey Peninsula to spend the winter there. To welcome their colorful guests, Cadbury by the Sea holds a weeklong festival complete with a butterfly queen and her court.

Eager to show some town spirit, Casey Feldstein finds herself fluttering back and forth between setting up a yarn retreat, baking and helping out at the festival. But when a former butterfly queen is found dead with a knife in her back after a Bless the Butterflies service, Casey must set her loom aside to hook a killer with a score to settle.

KNOT GUILTY
By
Betty Hechtman

I remember when it was just a dream to think about mixing crochet and mystery and now Knot Guilty, the 9th book in the series, is coming out. Between then and now I have learned a lot more about the yarn world.

hooked on murderI thought when I taught myself how to crochet granny squares from a kids kit that the golden door of yarn craft had opened up for me, but it turns out it had just opened a crack. Like everything else though, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. When the first book in the series, Hooked on Murder, came out I spoke at a Sisters in Crime meeting. Afterwards a woman came up to me and leaned in close to share that she had a stash, too. I smiled and nodded like I understood what she was talking about, but I didn’t. Shortly after that I found out that a stash is the overflowing supply of yarn that it seems most yarn crafters have. Think bags and bins of yarn tucked in closets and filling up guest rooms. I certainly know what the word means now and actually have a stash in two cities.

Speaking of yarn, I quickly found out that all yarn is not the same and some of it is a nightmare to work with. Eventually I got into how yarn was made and learned about shearing sheep, preparing wool and spinning.

knot guiltyMy crochet skills got sharper with each book. And I heard about yarn shows. The first one I went to was put on by the Crochet Guild and the Knitting Guild and held in Minneapolis. There were classes, contests, demonstrations, fashion shows, banquets and a huge vendor floor. I quickly discovered there were two groups at the show — the attendees and the people who were there for business. And they had two different perspectives on the event. One group was basically there for a good time and the other was hoping to make a profit. The business group included teachers who traveled a circuit of yarn shows giving classes and people from yarn shops, yarn companies, and related business who had booths in the vendor area, along with the show organizers.

Whenever you get a big gathering of people with different motives there is bound to be drama.

I began to wonder what Molly Pink and her crew would do at a yarn show…. So, in Knot Guilty, Molly and the Tarzana Hookers are running a booth at the Southern California Knit Style show. Up until now the show has always been knitcentric and this is the first year that crochet is being included in the classes, contests and fashion shows. Even so, the head of the show K.D. Kirby is still treating crochet like the poor step sister yarn of yarn crafts.

Anybody who has read any of my books can just imagine how Adele Abrams takes that news. As Molly says, they all agree that crochet is their preferred yarn craft, but Adele takes that feeling to a whole new dimension.

silence of the lambs wool julyThe drama in this yarn show goes into overdrive and wouldn’t you know someone turns up dead.

Cool Off With Casey
By
Betty Hechtman

There’s nothing better on a sweltering summer day than to escape into Casey Feldstein’s world on California’s Monterey peninsula. The weather is cool year round with white skies and creeping fingers of fog. It makes you want to grab a fleece jacket and go for a bracing walk on the silky sand beach across the road from Vista Del Mar, the moody hotel and conference center where Casey puts on her yarn retreats.

If you want to get away from it all, there isn’t a better place than Vista Del Mar. The Arts and Crafts style buildings are over 100 years old and built with lots of dark wood and local stone. The buildings are sprinkled over 100 acres of sloping grounds dotted with tall, narrow Monterey pines and Monterey cypress trees shaped by the wind. You won’t find any manicured lawns here. The grounds have been allowed to grow wild. If a tree falls, it is left to decompose naturally. Rumor has it that it is the same if an animal dies. Maybe a body, too, who knows? Situated on a small peninsula jutting into the Pacific ocean, it literally is the end of the earth.

What a perfect place to hold a yarn retreat. A group of people with a common interest gather there to spend time on their craft and learn something new. There is always the smell of wood smoke in the air. All the guest room buildings have living room-like lobbies furnished with overstuffed chairs that surround a glowing fireplace. Just the place to gather with some friends, take out your knitting and talk about murder.

19486435In Silence of the Lamb’s Wool Casey has arranged for a retreat that starts with the shearing of some sheep and ends with the knitting of a shawlette, making for a very busy weekend. It only gets more complicated when a key player in the retreat turns up dead and leaves Casey in the lurch.

Lucky for Casey some of her first time retreaters have come back. Her best friend and boss, Lucinda Thornkill is there to help, even if the manager of Vista Del Mar is still trying to give Casey a hard time.

Even with all that is going on, Casey manages to continue her nightly baking of desserts at the Blue Door Restaurant and keeps the coffee spots in the town of Cadbury by the Sea supplied with her delicious freshly made muffins, though she is shocked when one of the muffins turns out to be a clue.

And the two men in her life – will her ex, Dr. Sammy win her back with his bagful of tricks, or will Dane, the adorable cop down the street, ever get to first base with her?

Want to truly feel apart of the story? There is a pattern for the shawlette and recipes for some of Casey’s specialties included.

Enjoy!

~Betty

Dessert chef Casey Feldstein has learned one end of a knitting needle from the other after inheriting her aunt’s yarn retreat business, but a murder threatens to unravel her latest event . . .

Casey’s running a new retreat called “From Sheep to Shawl” at a resort on the atmospheric Monterey Peninsula. Participants will learn about sheepshearing, fixing up the fleece, and spinning, and will eventually knit a lovely shawl.

Nicole Welton has been hired to teach the fleece-to-fiber portion of the retreat. She’s an expert spinner, and her small shop in Cadbury by the Sea houses a beautiful assortment of spinning wheels and drop spindles. But when the new teacher fails to show up for class and is found lying dead on the boardwalk, it leaves everyone’s nerves frayed.

Now Casey has to knit together clues faster than she can count stitches before someone else at the retreat gets dropped . . .

Includes a knitting pattern and a recipe!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Casey’s retreat sounds like a lot of fun. Seeing the sheep getting sheared, cleaning and combing the fleece and spinning and then knitting with wool we made ourselves would be a blast. Too bad she had to face one roadblock after another including the death of the woman that was supposed to lead the whole retreat. Casey channels her aunt and does what she would have done and handled each problem head on, even chasing down a killer.

I really love these characters. Casey has landed on her feet pretty well and following in her aunt’s footsteps continuing the yarn retreats while challenging definitely keeps her busy. Even though her mother still thinks she needs to get a “real job”.  What I really enjoyed was the friendships she continues to make. Three retreaters from the last retreat return in this story and they really step up and help Casey with this retreat. Her best friend Lucinda and her husband Tag are back too as is her ex. Dr. Sammy has moved to town and has found an unusual way to stay close to Casey.

Betty Hechtman has spun a fine mystery too. Was it suicide or murder? If it was murder who did it? She keeps trying to get her handsome neighbor who happens to be a cop to see things her way but she leaves each meeting with him either hot and bothered or furious that he is not taking her seriously.

If you are knitter you will want to grab your needles, if you are not you will wish you were. This is a captivating page turner and I  thoroughly enjoyed it!!

Dessert chef Casey Feldstein doesn’t know a knitting needle from a crochet hook. But after her aunt dies unexpectedly, leaving Casey to run her yarn retreat business, the sweets baker finds herself rising to the occasion—and trying to unravel a murder mystery…

Casey has history of not completing what she starts but decides to complete something her aunt started even though she hasn’t a clue on how to run a yarn retreat.  With the help of her friend, Lucinda, and master teacher, Kris, she just may be able to pull it off and close her aunt’s business with no strings left hanging.

But then one of the retreat regulars is found dead in her hotel room.  Casey has an inkling the police are missing something. Let’s face it they still have not caught the person who committed the hit and run that killed her aunt, so she doesn’t have much faith in their abilities. She starts to knit the clues together and she plans to unravel all the knots and catch the killer herself if she has to…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Set in Monterey, California, Betty Hechtman’s new series is off to a fantastic start.

Casey Feldstein is a 35 year old woman whose life has taken several different directions much to her parent’s dismay. The latest turn has taken her to California to her aunt’s guest house. She has a job doing what she loves baking desserts for a local restaurant and baking muffins for several other businesses. Then her aunt is killed and she is left handling the details of her estate.

I fell for this character very quickly along with all the supporting characters. Lucinda is the perfect sidekick, her husband Tag is ultra obsessive compulsive and it drives Lucinda crazy but she loves him. Casey’s old boyfriend arrives on the scene with her parents in hopes are getting her to settle down and do something they approve of. Dane, the neighbor, who is also on the police force, adds to the romantic tension and the humor in the story.

The mystery is extremely well presented and woven through the entire story with ease. There really are three deaths and they may or may not be connected. It was really very interesting to follow all the clues and put everything together.

Hechtman is also the author of The Crochet Mysteries that feature Molly Pink, and an avid crafter so she knows what she is doing in the cozy mystery department. She has not only given us a wonderful story to kick off this series but has laid the groundwork for many more installments.

If you are not familiar with her work you can start with this one and then you can get started on her other series. The eighth book in that series, FOR BETTER OR WORSTED.,comes out in November.
