We return to Hope’s Crossing with Lucy Drake. She has come back to take care of her the home left to her by her aunt. While excited to be back she is not excited to see Brendan Caine.  Brenden was married to Lucy’s best friend, Jessie, who recently passed away. They had a little thing before Brendan even met Jessie.  They both remember that steamy hot kiss and while Lucy has been an “aunt” to his kids, they only had to endure each other’s  presence on rare occasions.  Now she is back in Hope’s Crossing and that means trouble with a capital T for both of them.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love this series!!

RaeAnne Thayne brings us such terrific characters. Characters that are real and flawed and have issues and in Hope’s Crossing things happen to bring the right people together and overcome any obstacle. Of course there are residents of the town the push and  sometimes shove people together so that can finally let down the walls they have built around their hearts and open their eyes and realize what or who is right in front of them. In this story two children and two little pups are key players. Lucy’s step sister also comes to Hope’s Crossing to shake things up a bit.

I have broke my rule about reading these books in order twice now and am glad I did. I also plan to catch up on the couple I have missed. I was so happy to learn that Christmas in Snowflake Canyon was not the last in the series. These stories have become my go to books when I just need to escape from everyday stress and relax and know there is going to be happy ending.

All of my visits to Hope’s Crossing have been wonderful and I hope I get to visit again very soon as I catch up on the ones I missed.  You can read them order but they do read well as stand alone too. I am really sorry to see this series end but it goes out on a great high note.

Jenn and Greg are enjoying their annual summer getaway to Deia, a village in Majorca off the coast of southern Spain. They are spending lazy days on the beach and afternoon sex in their gorgeous villa.

Everything is wonderful until Emma, Greg teenage daughter, arrives with her boyfriend Nathan. Jenn finds herself immediately drawn to the young man. It is taking all her strength to curb her temptation. Is giving in worth the risk?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was an amazing fast read.

The author has given has four very flawed characters. Jenn is bored with her life and even bored with her vacation to this idyllic place. Greg is keeping a secret and seems to really have a problem with a landlord they have known for years. Emma is fifteen, need I say more. In addition to the usual angst of a 15 year old she really has a problem with her step-mom and the divide divide is growing, leading to a tension between Greg and Jenn. Then there is Nathan. This young man is quite a piece a work. Sadly I really didn’t like any of them but their story is very compelling and I just couldn’t stop reading. Which may be exactly what the author wanted.

She describes the panoramas of Spain beautifully. She painted a picture of an awful storm so clearly I could almost feel the wind and rain. She also tells the sexual parts of the story very graphically so if you are uncomfortable with that this is not the book for you.

The plot had several twists that drew me even further into the story. There were several times I wanted to just jump into the book and shake Jenn and tell her what she was doing was wrong. But it was like watching a scary movie and you cover your eyes so you can’t see the frightening parts but they still happen. The ending surprised me, a shocking twist. Helen Walsh wrote a great story but the ending was masterful.

I think this is a story people really like or absolutely hate. It was not a perfect escape for me but I definitely want to read more books from this author.

Nancy Herkness invites readers back to Sanctuary, West Virginia, in Book Three of the award-winning Whisper Horse series.

Fleeing professional scandal and a broken engagement, veterinarian Hannah Linden abandons Chicago for the mountain town of Sanctuary, West Virginia, hoping to put her troubles with men and the media behind her. But when she encounters world-famous chef Adam Bosch, she finds herself increasingly drawn to the charming but darkly complex man and his troubled teenage son, Matt. Adam, a recovering alcoholic, fears he can never be a worthy father to the surly, distant boy he has just come to know, and enlists Hannah’s help in his struggle to connect with his son.

Hoping to coax Matt out of his shell, Hannah introduces the boy to an ailing brown pony who has the power to change his view of the world. But can the determined little whisper horse prove to Hannah, Adam, and Matt that they were meant to be a family?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

She did it again. Nancy Herkness continues to write books I quickly find myself lost in. This whole Whisper Horse theme touches me. I wish I had a whisper horse!!

All the main characters in this story are broken. Hannah was blamed for something any caring person who have done and the man that is supposed to love her turns his back on her. Adam had a very rough upbringing and his self esteem is lower than low. He tries to escape into his work but knows something is missing.  Matt just lost his mother and is sent to his father, a man he doesn’t know  at all.  Heck Adam didn’t know about him either.

Herkness has written a wonderful story that is more than just a romance, these three people are almost reborn as they are surrounded by the caring community of Sanctuary, West Virginia. Don’t worry, there are a few steamy romantic scenes too.

The author paints pictures so easily with her  words. I could easily see all three of stories as movies.  I love this escape!!

Holiday gifts don’t always come in expected packages…especially in the town of Hope’s Crossing.

Genevieve Beaumont is back home after being dealt an ultimatum by her father.

Dylan Caine, a sexy, wounded war vet, is learning to cope after being injured in Afghanistan by a bomb explosion in which some of his friends lost their lives.

A chance meeting in a local bar brings Gen and Dylan together and could change both their lives if they can just realize it.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I broke my own rule about reading series book in order but I so needed to read a Christmas story and this one just called out to me. In fact once I started reading I couldn’t stop.

As a person with a disability Thane’s stories just hit me right in the heart. All of her characters have their flaws and like Taryn in Woodrose Mountain there are people in this story dealing with physical disabilities. This time it is wounded veterans including Dylan Caine who was wounded in Afghanistan and is struggling with so much.

This story was just what I needed to read. So many characters went through transformations. Not only Gen and Dylan but a wondrous gift was given to a supporting character that brought tears to me eyes. Love can conquer anything and in this story it does. This author is excellent at developing her characters. The emerge and grow at a perfect pace. The reader can feel their struggles and their internal battles to change what they can and accept what they can’t.

While this is a Christmas story, don’t think you need to wait until next year to read it. There is still plenty of blustery weather left for you to curl up with it  this winter or it can help you cool off when the weather is warmer too. It is a feel good story for any time of year.

I understand this may be the last book in this series but because I broke my own rule it will not be my last trip to Hope’s Crossing. I will happily be visiting again soon when I read the stories I skipped.

Julia Castillo knows she is a talented artist. Her work has sold at top prices at several galleries. But her uncle believes her new work is too much of a departure from her previous paintings. He has taken care of her and been her agent since her parents moved overseas. He has tried to protect her from everything the world has to offer, including any negative criticism her work may receive.

Julia has made the decision to show her family she can take care of herself. The first step is connect with someone who loves her work and find out if her new work is as good as she thinks it is. She loads up her paintings and heads to a gallery in Sanctuary, West Virginia.

Julia is going to find herself tested like she never has before. Will her new work be accepted by the art world? How will a huge black stallion change her life? Will her heart open up to a handsome country lawyer, a man with a whole set of obstacles in his own life? Can she keep an important secret from all the new people in her life?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This the second Nancy Herkness story I have lost myself in. Take Me Home was the first. Like that one this was a wonderful story.  The groundwork about “whisper horses” was all laid out in that story so this one really took us into Julia’s and Paul’s lives.

Julia grew by leaps and bounds in a very short time, beautifully written and perfectly paced by Herkness. Paul’s awakening finally was reached by the end of the book thanks to another character’s wake up call. Julia was driven my several forces including the force of one huge horse who needed her as much as she needed him. Paul was resigned to his life and didn’t see any future of change until Julia entered his life.

This is a passionate story of two people finding their way together while keeping promises they made and trying not hurt their families in any way. There are some very steamy scenes between Paul and Julia. Their romance burned up more than a few pages.

A extraordinary romance. The author painted lovely and powerful images in my mind. I wish Julia’s work was real so I could see if my thoughts even come close to the real thing.

Sophie is a Hollywood publicist who has a fabulous job, a fabulous boyfriend, and a fabulous life. She even scores her PR firm’s most important actor client and every woman’s dream—Billy Fox.

But will a steamy make-out session in a restaurant alley with her big-name client cost Sophie her job? And does she really want an escape from her life and her loving, if imperfect, relationship with her investment banker boyfriend?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Alison Sweeney takes us behind the scenes into the life of a very successful Hollywood publicist and we find her days could be featured on any daytime drama. Being tempted by a new actor she is supposed to be representing could ruin everything she has worked years to obtain.

Sweeney writes what she knows. She has worked on Days of Our Lives for 20 years and knows the job of a publicist as she has probably worked with more than a few herself. I have a hard time accepting this is her first foray into the world of fiction publishing. I hope it is the first of many! The story flows perfectly and she has created a leading lady readers will love. We also get wrapped up so easily in the romantic triangle. I was glad I didn’t have to choose which man she would spend her life with.

Sophie Atwater is a 31 year old publicist headed for the top. She is addicted to her Blackberry and she calls herself a “glorified babysitter”. That’s what her job is – holding the client’s hands and keeping them out of trouble. She is on the red-carpet, at fundraisers and sitting in on interviews.  She is far from the perfect woman she strives to be and truthfully can be quite a klutz, especially when Billy Fox is around. Her mishaps will have you absolutely laughing out loud.

This debut has it all drama, comedy, romance and even a bit of mystery. A fun-tastic read! It is the book you will see everyone reading this summer at the beach!

Take Me Home

When Claire Parker left Sanctuary, West Virginia, she thought it was for good. She never dreamed she would return and be sharing her problems with a “whisper horse”. She has been through an ugly divorce and now is taking care of her ailing sister who is facing some trials of her own. An abused Thoroughbred mare has come to her rescue and they have formed a special bond. She also got to meet the handsome vet who is treating the horse’s wounds.

Dr. Tim Arbuckle, was devastated by his wife’s death and is having a hard time opening his heart again. Claire has stirred emotions he thought were deeply buried and the bond gets stronger when her whisper horse falls gravely ill.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
What a wonderful story. I needed to read a romance I could loose myself in and this one was excellent. Set in the majestic mountains of West Virginia with believable characters in real situations, I truly loved this story.

There is a lot happening in this story and I was surprised how quickly I reached the end. It is so well written and perfectly paced. I enjoyed Claire and Tim’s story and I am hoping Holly’s story continues as this is supposed to be a series. The supporting characters are rich and I definitely what more.

This book had me wishing for my own whisper horse. What a fantastic idea! I wonder if Willow has friends in the pastures of Wisconsin.

This may have been my first experience with this author but it definitely won’t be my last.

Starting Now: A Blossom Street Novel (Blossom Street #9)

Libby Morgan has sacrificed everything for her career, family, friends, her marriage. She has been on the partner track at her law firm for six years. When her boss calls her to his office she just knows it is going to be fantastic news. She is going to make partner ahead of her schedule. But the economy has been bad, she hasn’t brought in enough high profile clients and her boss has no choice but to let her go.

Devastated and with no job on the horizon she finds herself at A Good Yarn, the local knitting store. She immediately becomes friends with Lydia, the owner, and her daughter Casey. She also meets Casey’s friend Eva. Eva’s life is about to change and it will change Libby’s life as well.

Libby starts to understand what she has been missing by putting her career before everything else. She even meets a handsome doctor. When things start to finally be moving forward in her life she is forced to make a choice that could change everything again.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It is so easy to escape into a Debbie Macomber book. They are always inspiring and have the ability to uplift the reader. She has created rich and warm characters and given them stories that are heartfelt.

We all suffer losses in our lifetimes, be it losing our jobs or losing someone important to us and what counts is how we deal with that loss. Libby did have a nice severance package that allowed her time to start over but Starting Now really presents a feeling of hope. Hope of a successful career, hope of someone to love, hopes for friends and family.

While this book is part of a series it still reads well as a stand alone. It is not my favorite Blossom Street story but I sure did enjoy it. Libby makes a wonderful addition to the Blossom Street cast.

Sheriff Trace Callaghan wants to solve the murder of Laura Fletcher but her sister Mariah has returned to Whiskey River after a long absence. The story is full of deep dark secrets and illicit desires. Everyone is a suspect and nothing is what it seems…..

Dollycas’s Thoughts
If you like your mystery wrapped with a steamy romance this is a book for you! I have wanted to read a JoAnn Ross novel for a long time so when Book World offered me this book I jumped at it. I did not know it was a reprint or the first book in a series but I am happy because I definitely want to read more.

These are wonderfully written characters with depth and heart. The plot is well developed. There are twists and turns, chills and spills, and plenty of action. The reader can get carried away in the romance in books like this but it so naturally interwoven into this story. It is a little formulaic in places but realizing it was originally written back in 1997 as part of a Harlequin series that is very understandable. Writing more than 90 novels Ross definitely knows what she is doing. I have several of her novels screaming from my To-Be-Read stack. I can’t wait to get reading those.

Emilie’s Christmas Love
Contemporary Romance

Emilie and her aunt live in a huge house and have plenty of money. She is a teacher that works with at-risk youth. The one thing Emilie wants more than anything is to adopt a child. But it is so hard for a single woman to adopt. She thought her dreams were about to come true but yet again she is denied because the person giving the child up will only allow a two parent household to adopt the child.

Nick is a mechanic and he has taken in his niece and nephew after his sister’s tragic death. He promised her he would give her children the one thing she and Nick didn’t have: two parents.

Nick and Emilie meet when he tows her car. She soon learns that he is the man offering the little girl for adoption. He doesn’t know she is the rich woman wanting to adopt his niece. When she finds out they need a place to stay over the holidays she invites them to stay with her. She hopes to convince him she is the perfect person to adopt his niece and his nephew as well.

Neither of them expected what happened next.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cozy mystery authors Jim and Joyce Lavene bring us a wonderful Christmas love story.

Emilie’s heart had been broken before by a man who couldn’t deal with her disability. She just was so afraid to open herself up to that kind of pain again. She knew she could make a good home for a child on her own and that was what she planned to do. Then Nick entered her life and as she tried to prove to him she didn’t need a man in her life they just kept getting closer and closer. It was so easy to connect with these characters.

The Lavene’s have written a captivating love story that will pull at your heartstrings. It unfolds at a perfect pace with the expected misunderstandings and drama but there is humor and more depth than usually found in romance novel today. Emilie’s work just with Adam – striving to get to the bottom of his behavior. She is a very special teacher.

If you are looking for a book to curl up with this holiday season this is one I highly recommend!

Hope doesn’t want to get mixed up with a card shark like Tanner, who’s too much like her father–an irresponsible gambler who cheats and takes too many risks. But she’ll do what she has to do to get the ranch back.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was a fast and fun read that I didn’t want to end.

Hope is a complex character dealing with abandonment issues because her father left their family and never looked back. She has a hard time dating and trusting men which was written beautifully. The romance is true to real life making her character so easy to identify with.

The Russians are hilarious and the shopping trips Hope took with Baby are hysterical. Her honorary uncles are loving and so funny. They are really there for Hope and her mom and her sister. Her niece Amber even lines up a couple honorary uncles for herself.

This story has it all romance, suspense, and humor. Gambling, mobsters, dysfunctional family, organic farming, Vegas, I loved it!!! I am so glad that what happened in Vegas this time didn’t stay in Vegas. I am “all in” on this one. JACKPOT!!

About This Author

Kay Keppler was born and raised in Wisconsin. It’s a beautiful state, and she’s always liked it, but it’s awfully cold in the winter and way too hot and humid in the summer, plus the mosquitoes could carry you away.

After a few side experiments going here and there, she settled in northern California, where she’s lived comfortably ever since in that old house with the wonky plumbing.

She enjoys reading and writing, but not arithmetic, housework, or spiders. She has a messy garden she shares with neighbors, and she likes to watch movies and TV. Her favorite thing to do is lie on the sofa in the afternoon with a good novel, a cup of tea, and music to fit the mood.

Hope’s Crossing Series
2nd in Series

We met Evie Blanchard in the first book of the series Blackberry Summer.  She works for Claire in the bead shop but before she came to Hope’s Crossing she lived in Los Angeles and was a very successful physical therapist. After a very emotional year there she sought refuge in the relaxed pace of Hope’s Crossing. She is shocked when her friend Katherine who knows her history asks her to help with her granddaughter Taryn’s rehabilitation. Taryn was injured in a accident the shook up the whole town. Evie was able to turn down dad Brodie’s request when he asked her to help but there was no way she could turn down his mom.

Brodie is a single dad that will do anything he can to help his daughter recuperate and is happy when Evie agrees to at least get things set up and started. She is immediately drawn in by Taryn’s spirit and realizes the she can help her. The feelings that she is starting to feel for Brodie are the last thing she needs.

With some help for her friends Taryn starts to make strides in her recovery and Evie and Brodie are on a path to find a love neither of them expected.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This book hit me on a very personal level. Many of you know my story. I was in a accident back in 2001 that has left my right side paralyzed. I spent 75 days in the hospital and then another year in outpatient therapy. I was privileged to work with some awesome physical and occupational therapists. Thankfully my brain and speech was not affected like Taryn, but it was a long road and while I can walk very short distances, any trips outside of our home require a wheelchair and learning to do things left-handed and one-handed has been a journey I would not wish on anyone. My prognosis wasn’t that good and there have been bumps along the way but each day I wake up is a gift.

Because of what I went through Taryn’s story rings true. Her depression, her anger, her temper, are all things just like I experienced as well as the joy she felt when a goal is reached.  The therapist’s push you beyond what you think you can do. That’s what Evie did for Taryn.

Yes, this a romance novel, and the romance was engaging. Like the first book in the series the characters and their relationships with each other is wonderful. Hope’s Crossing seems like a great place to live. The author has created a place I want to visit again and again. But it was Taryn’s story of strength and drive and doing the right thing in the end that made me absolutely love this book.

Blackberry Summer (Hqn)
Hope’s Crossing Series
1st in Series
HQN Books

Set in Hope’s Crossing, Colorado.  Claire Bradford is the owner of a successful bead shop. She is a single mom with two kids living a predictable life.  She has no time for romance. At least that is what she keeps telling herself. So why does her best friend’s younger brother Riley seem so darn sexy and hot? He has returned to be the the new chief of police of this boring little town when he was some big shot on the police force in California. It just doesn’t make sense.

A string of robberies leads to a tragic accident that forces Claire to accept help from her friends, even from Riley McKnight. The accident ends up affecting the whole town. Things get ugly when it is found teenagers are involved in the robberies and it starts to rip the town apart.

A mysterious “Angel of Hope” inspires a small group and then the whole town to plan an event to help bring everyone back together. A bit of romance also starts to blossom making for a very interesting summer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I was swept away by many things in this book. The friendships of the people who visit Claire’s shop, the long term relationships of the people of Hope’s Crossing, seeing someone you have known all your life differently after time has passed, and the effect the “Angel of Hope” has on this town.

If I was ever lucky enough to win the lottery or come into a great deal of money I would want to be just like the “Angel of Hope”, helping people anonymously with things they need. The way the angel inspired the people of Hope’s Crossing was really uplifting.

The characters in this story are so engaging and well developed. You want to be part of everything they are doing.

I haven’t read Harlequin in quite awhile because they were started to feel the same story just with different names but that is definitely not the case with this story. This book is about so much more than the romance. Claire needs to break out of a life she has trapped herself in. Riley has so many reasons for coming home and for staying away as long as he did. Claire’s mother has issues that need to be dealt with. Claire’s ex-husband and his new younger, pregnant wife live right in town. Thayne interweaves and blends all their lives together wonderfully along with many other residents of the town of Hope’s Crossing. I love the way she writes and her descriptions of people and places were a delight. I will be reviewing the next book in the series Woodrose Mountain later today.

Last Chance Beauty Queen
Published by Forever
Hachette Book Group
3rd in Series

Hugh Debracy, an English Baron, comes to Last Chance, South Carolina to try to complete a deal that his partner started before he disappeared. He needs to try to convince the owner of Golfing For God to sell him his property so that he can build his textile plant. Seems the land has perfect road and rail access, but the owner is not selling. Enter Caroline “Rocky” Rhodes, former Last Chance Watermelon Queen, aide to U.S. Senator Rupert Warren and daughter of the owner of Golfing For God. The Senator needs this factory built and expects Rocky to make it happen.

Rocky doesn’t come home to Last Chance often and coming home while the Watermelon Festival is going on turns this trip into quite a crazy return.  She is supposed to be working for the Senator, but her friends and family expect her take part in the festival as a former Watermelon Queen, wearing the green and pink dress, riding on a float in the parade and even taking part in a kissing booth.  She really wants to be promoted to the Senator’s Washington Office and none of these shenanigans are going to help her land the job.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I broke my own rule, this is the third book in this series and I read it without reading the previous two installments and you know what, it didn’t matter. This book can definitely read as a stand alone. This is Rocky’s story. Home At Last Chance is her brother Tulane’s story and Welcome to Last Chance starts off the series with their brother Clay’s story.

This is a wild crazy story full of wild and crazy characters and it was a splendid, fun and a very entertaining read. The Sorrowful Angel added a unique element to the story that at first I was confused by, but in the end it all came together.

Ruby Rhodes, Rocky’s mom runs the local beauty parlor, and you know how hairdresser’s know everyone secrets, that is definitely the case here. She is also the typical mother than can get her kids do anything she asks, even her oldest son, Stone, the local sheriff.

There is also a fourth book in the works, Last Chance Christmas. I plan to read the first two books before that one is released.
