The Artist's Inheritance (Antique Magic, #1)

Trouble only a witch can solve…

Settling into a new home, Caitlin notices changes coming over her husband. When nightmares deepen and ghosts begin lurking–Caitlin knows something’s not right, and not just her newfound precognitive abilities. It’s the damned chair her husband’s carving, she’s sure. Could it be just what it seems: a mundane piece of furniture? If so, why is it attracting dark forces–the forces she suspects drove Trevor’s siblings to insanity and suicide?

Armed with a handful of allies–a coven of helpful witches–she must proceed with caution against the hellish forces besieging her family. If she fails, she may lose forever the one thing she cares about most: her beloved Trevor.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
What a creepy story! It took me a chapter or two to get used to the author’s storytelling style and fantasy/paranormal is not my usual genre but I did enjoy this story.

I did have a problem with the character of Cait. I know she loves her husband and he definitely was behaving strangely but I just didn’t feel a connection with her. Trevor on the other was frightening and scary and I found myself empathizing with him and all his family had suffered.

The plot is very interesting and by the end of the book I was satisfied with the outcome. It left me wondering where the author will taking these character as this is the first book in a series.

Dead on Ice

This is the first book in a series featuring Hancock County Prosecuting Attorney Joshua Thornton and Pennsylvania State Police homicide detective Cameron Gates.

When a group of people get together to clean out the home of a long time resident they barely escape with their lives. Someone had planted a bomb in the house that was discovered just seconds before it blew. While investigating the explosion an old freezer was found in the basement almost unscathed. The contents were very surprising – a body. A body that is connected to another murder committed back in 1978. It is up to Joshua and Cameron to find out sort out the clues and determine just who put this body on ice.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is my first book by the this author and have learned these characters were introduced in one of her other series.  Cameron’s cat who happens to look just like a skunk is her full time ride along partner. Irving adds a bit of humor to what could have been a very heavy story.  The story has the expected twists and turns and there are several possible suspects. These people have a lot of secrets that made the ending a bit of a surprise.

There is plenty of room for these characters to grow and evolve as the series moves forward. The jurisdictional issues were a bit confusing at first and the characters cross city, county and state lines throughout the story. Who was in charge or lead the investigation continued to swap back and forth as Joshua was building his case and Cameron was trying to solve hers. I look forward to seeing how this is dealt with in future installments. I am also anxious to see how Joshua’s and Cameron’s relationship goes forward. There could be many trials and tribulations as they try to move forward as the careers will continue to get in the way.

Lauren Carr will be an author I will continue to watch. She has set up a solid foundation for her new series.

India Black goes undercover in this short story that is a prequel to the rest of stories.

India is working for Mother Moore and she has become to favorite to many gents. When one of her favorites asks for her assistance she just can’t turn him down. She accompanies him on a week long trip to the country where he will meet with a wealthy American. He hopes India’s special talents will get him to agree the the business deal he has in mind.   She is surprised to learn the American is in possession of the Rajah’s Ruby. She is even more surprised when the ruby disappears at the same time as her favorite gent.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love this series and really enjoyed this novella that gives us more of India’s background and how she came to be the madam of Lotus House.  India Black is a unique character and Carol Carr fleshes her out for us wonderfully.  Before this series I was not much of a fan of historical mysteries but this author writes in a way that takes us right there in the moment. The last installment of this series, India Black and the Widow of Windsor, made by Best of 2011 list for a very good reason. All of these stories are excellent.

If this series is new to you this is the perfect time to read it. Start with this short story and then continue with India Black and India Black and the Widow of Windsor. India Black and the Shadows of Anarchy hits stores February 5, 2013. You will not be disappointed.

But it is so hard for a single woman to adopt. She thought her dreams were about to come true but yet again she is denied because the person giving the child up will only allow a two parent household to adopt the child.

Nick is a mechanic and he has taken in his niece and nephew after his sister’s tragic death. He promised her he would give her children the one thing she and Nick didn’t have: two parents.

Nick and Emilie meet when he tows her car. She soon learns that he is the man offering the little girl for adoption. He doesn’t know she is the rich woman wanting to adopt his niece. When she finds out they need a place to stay over the holidays she invites them to stay with her. She hopes to convince him she is the perfect person to adopt his niece and his nephew as well.

Neither of them expected what happened next.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Cozy mystery authors Jim and Joyce Lavene bring us a wonderful Christmas love story.

Emilie’s heart had been broken before by a man who couldn’t deal with her disability. She just was so afraid to open herself up to that kind of pain again. She knew she could make a good home for a child on her own and that was what she planned to do. Then Nick entered her life and as she tried to prove to him she didn’t need a man in her life they just kept getting closer and closer. It was so easy to connect with these characters.

The Lavene’s have written a captivating love story that will pull at your heartstrings. It unfolds at a perfect pace with the expected misunderstandings and drama but there is humor and more depth than usually found in romance novel today. Emilie’s work just with Adam – striving to get to the bottom of his behavior. She is a very special teacher.

If you are looking for a book to curl up with this holiday season this is one I highly recommend!

CATHEDRAL WINDOWS
It’s the holiday season, but things are heating up in Archers Rest.

Christmas is just around the corner in the Hudson Valley. Nell and her friends at the Someday Quilts shop should be making eggnog and finishing up the stitching on their last homemade gifts, but when an arsonist strikes and a beloved teacher becomes a suspect, the ladies rally behind him to clear his good name. Will they succeed in time for him to spend Christmas among loved ones or will this be a chilly winter for the town of Archers Rest?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A holiday bonus trip to Archer’s Rest with a bit of a message too!

Just because a person is a bit of a mystery doesn’t mean there is anything sinister afoot. Charlie is a veteran who has returned after serving in Afghanistan and is now a teacher in Archer’s Rest. Nell meets him when she is doing a quilting project with the kids at the school. He doesn’t stick around while she is in his classroom even though a little teacher participation would have been appreciated. She understands he is adjusting to his non-military life but others seem to think his is strange because he keeps to himself. When his house starts on fire many suspect him of arson because his failure to acclimate to civilian life. Nell decides to get to know him a little better and maybe find the real culprit that started the fire. It is then that she learns about Charlie’s grandmother and her Cathedral Windows quilt.

A quilt has a way of bringing people together. The story behind it, the quilters that put it together, or even quilters sitting together working on their own projects. Those sewn seams can bind us together. That is what happens in this wonderful story. A perfect read for the holidays.

Red Hot Deadly Peppers (A Farmers' Market Mystery, #3.5)Becca is in Arizona, spending some time at Chief Buffalo’s Trading Post and its neighboring farmers’ market to check out how the two operate together. She’s paired with Nera, a Native American woman who sells the most delicious pecans—right next to a booth with the hottest peppers money can buy.

When Nera asks her to deliver some beads to Graham, a talented jewelry maker inside Chief Buffalo’s, Becca is grateful to get a break from the heat. Little does she realize that the heat’s about to get cranked up even more—because Graham has been murdered, and she’s the one who finds his body. She soon discovers that Graham was Nera’s cousin, and that her uncle was recently killed too, after receiving a threatening note. Becca begins to think the murders may have something to do with the family’s hot pepper business. Now she must find the killer, before she’s the one in the hot seat…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Like the “Between the Numbers” books of Janet Evanovich, Paige Shelton dishes up a bonus mini episode of her Farmer’s Market Mysteries.

It seems wherever Becca goes trouble follows, but the murder is quickly solved and Becca heads home where she belongs. Interesting new characters into a new place. Learned a bit about peppers too!

This is a fun short story while we waited for the release of A Killer Maize that is available today. You can check out my review of A Killer Maize tomorrow when Paige Shelton stops by for Cozy Wednesday.

Mare's Nest

Annie Bellamy loves horses. She grew up showing horses and the buying, selling, and showing of horses led to the bankruptcy and break-up of her family, and perhaps, her mother’s death. She now is trying to come to grips with her past as her own daughter, Teddy, falls in love with horses the same way she did. She vows that history will not repeat itself. Teddy’s talent cannot be denied. She connects with these horses like Annie never did.

Her daughter’s passion does come with a hefty price tag and she wonders how that will impact her family. She also never imagined the ruthless barn owners, the crooked trainers or the viciously competitive show moms they would meet on this journey in the horse world or “saddle soap opera”. Annie realizes that making her daughter’s dreams come true is going to take courage to stand up to all those around them wanting them to fail.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A captivating and inspiring story of a mother’s love and the special bonds of mother and daughter. Based on a true story, Lesley takes us into world of showing horses. What happens behind those barn doors and in the practice rings. The greed, the jealousy, the corruption, she tells all.

Mare’s Nest is a term defined as “an extraordinarily complicated situation”. That’s what the horse world is, a series of extraordinarily complicated situations. I love the way Kagen writes with heart and humor and the strength she gives her characters. Annie and Teddy had quite an uphill battle and a few missteps but it made each of them stronger and their relationship stronger as well.

As a mother with two daughters myself this book touched my heart. It also made me thankful they played volleyball, basketball and softball. The competitive parents are still there, the coaches did have their favorites, but the equipment can be put in a closet or the garage in the off season. A horse needs care year round and my heart would break every time one got hurt or would have to be sold.

You do not need any knowledge of horses or the competitions involved in showing a horse to love this book. I sure didn’t and I absolutely loved this story. It is a powerful story that every mother or daughter would enjoy. It is a truly awesome book! Definitely worth 10 stars!!!

You’ve Got Murder

Cozy Mystery

Meet the Shady Ladies. Wherever they go murder follows.

Six mystery writers who exchange emails, instant messages and texts discussing plot lines, sex and murder for their books, get a dose of non-fiction when one of their own is suspected of doing in a wife-beating killer.

Aristair is tough and strong, won’t date men but having sex with them is just fine. Hope is the caring mother of the group. She looks out for all of them and always tries to do the right thing. Megan is the fiery one, you don’t want to get on her bad side. Veronica is busy with her kids but does her best to keep up with all the happenings and drama. Kate is the most published of the bunch and that brings its own problems. Shelby is from the South recently transplanted to the Midwest. She won a contest to become a member of the Shady Ladies.

The heat cranks up when another member’s crooked literary agent is killed, and their newest member’s husband is looking more and more like a serial killer.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was such a fun read. I could so picture a group of authors doing this, without the actual murder of course. Cozies authors seem to be a tight bunch whether it be The Cozy Chicks, The Stiletto Gang, Jungle Red Writers, Mysteries and Margaritas, or Mystery Lovers Kitchen, cozy authors love to congregate together and we all love to see what they are up to, the stories behind the stories.

It did take a bit to get used to the different format of texts and emails but soon the pages were flying by making this a very quick read. I was afraid that we would lose the background or the depth needed to follow the mystery but this was not the case at all. We get to know the characters and the plot was very easy to follow. Each character is very unique. I cannot pick a favorite.

Social media is taking over the world. I read Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park back in August of 2011 and loved it. It was filled with Facebook statuses. People today Facebook, E-mail, and text  so why not a mystery written the way we now communicate. I wouldn’t be a fan of many books in this format but it was a nice change of pace.

About Karin Tabke
National bestselling, award-winning author Karin Tabke isn’t just another author with steamy stories to tell, but a cop’s wife who has “seen it all and heard it all.” Some of the hottest stories come from behind the blue wall of law enforcement rather than from in front. Married to a street cop, now retired, Karin is intimate with both and proves it with her sizzling tales of hot cops. Not only are her cops hot, but so are her sexy knights and bad boy werewolves. Karin’s Blood Sword Legacy series is a must read for anyone who loves tales of yore when men were men and women were women, and love did conqueror all. Her dark, erotic Blood Moon paranormal trilogy is best described as “Sons of Anarchy meets Rise of Lycans.” Her L.O.S.T. series (w/a Karin Harlow) is paranormal romantic suspense at its “chilling and sizzling”* best. You don’t want to miss any of Karin’s deliciously edgy tales of danger and passion!

Death and deception. After a whirlwind romance, Liam and Rebecca marry, knowing almost nothing of each other’s backgrounds. Only months later, on an afternoon shopping trip to a mall in the Buffalo, New York, suburb of Cheektowaga, Rebecca vanishes, seemingly abducted. Or did she make herself disappear? Was the marriage a sham? Was Liam a dupe? This is a novel of high crimes and dark shadows, involving the immensely profitable drug industry in which exclusive access to the market for a medication can mean billions of dollars, and holding on to that exclusivity might lead to lies, deceit, corruption, payoffs, and even murder.

Missing Rebecca

Dollycas’s Thoughts

No one is who they seem to be! Nothing is as it appears! I get that but…

More, I wanted more. The premise of this story is very sound and very intriguing and this could have been an awesome story. As is it’s o.k. but it needs to really be expanded. The characters need to be better developed. There is no one to root for in this story. No one the reader becomes invested in.

Also everything seems to happen at a frantic pace from Liam and Rebecca’s wedding to the search and the traveling hither and yon. At times this pace adds to the suspense but it clearly draws away from it in others.  The whole thing needed more detail and back story, the why so the reader can understand the journey.

This story has a short story feel. A quick mystery with twists that will keep you guessing past the final page. But like me you will be wanting MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Betting on Hope

Hope McNaughton hasn’t seen her father in years but he can still create havoc in her life. He has lost the family ranch in a poker game.

Hope thinks that just can’t be true but she finds out her father got the house in the divorce and they have been renting from him all these years. Hope learns he lost it to New Jersey Mafia boss Big Julie Saladino. He happens to be in Vegas hosting some private poker games so while she hasn’t played cards in quite a while she thinks with the right help she can win the ranch back.

Hope calls on her honorary uncles–who are totally legit, honestly–to sharpen her game. Poker champion Tanner Wingate doesn’t know what’s at stake but tries to convince Hope gambling when you can’t afford to lose is the wrong thing to do. Hope doesn’t want to get mixed up with a card shark like Tanner, who’s too much like her father–an irresponsible gambler who cheats and takes too many risks. But she’ll do what she has to do to get the ranch back.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This was a fast and fun read that I didn’t want to end.

Hope is a complex character dealing with abandonment issues because her father left their family and never looked back. She has a hard time dating and trusting men which was written beautifully. The romance is true to real life making her character so easy to identify with.

The Russians are hilarious and the shopping trips Hope took with Baby are hysterical. Her honorary uncles are loving and so funny. They are really there for Hope and her mom and her sister. Her niece Amber even lines up a couple honorary uncles for herself.

This story has it all romance, suspense, and humor. Gambling, mobsters, dysfunctional family, organic farming, Vegas, I loved it!!! I am so glad that what happened in Vegas this time didn’t stay in Vegas. I am “all in” on this one. JACKPOT!!

About This Author

Kay Keppler was born and raised in Wisconsin. It’s a beautiful state, and she’s always liked it, but it’s awfully cold in the winter and way too hot and humid in the summer, plus the mosquitoes could carry you away.

After a few side experiments going here and there, she settled in northern California, where she’s lived comfortably ever since in that old house with the wonky plumbing.

She enjoys reading and writing, but not arithmetic, housework, or spiders. She has a messy garden she shares with neighbors, and she likes to watch movies and TV. Her favorite thing to do is lie on the sofa in the afternoon with a good novel, a cup of tea, and music to fit the mood.
