If the Future has any remedy for this situation, do not hesitate to provide it. That is to say, Ike and Claire Wanzandae, HELP! HELP HELP HELP.

I am (perhaps not for long),
Benjamin Franklin

Ike Saturday has seen better days. For one thing, his pen pal, Benjamin Franklin (yes, that Benjamin Franklin), is the target of an angry mob after Ike’s plan to help the Founding Fathers with some intel from the future seriously backfired. For another, he’s decided to mail himself back in time with the help of his girlfriend, Claire Wanzandae, and it’s not a particularly comfortable way to travel.

Once Ike tracks B-Freezy down in 1776, it becomes clear that his pal is less than impressed with the irritating, modern-day rescuer, partially because Ike has a habit of making things worse for Ben, and partially because Ben is incredibly cranky when not in the presence of numerous meat pies. Which speaks to another issue for the pair: they have no money, no food, and basically no plan for saving the country. But Claire won’t be able to cover for Ike back home in the future forever, and the British are looking pretty impatient, so Ike and B-Freezy will have to come up with something quickly if they want to avoid an epic, history-destroying disaster.

In this hilarious sequel to Benjamin Franklin: Huge Pain in My . . . , Adam Mansbach and Alan Zweibel take Ike and B-Freezy’s antics to the next level as this ill-paired (and sometimes actually ill) duo hold the future of the world in their not-so-capable hands.

A refreshingly candid and wickedly funny look at life’s second half from Everybody Loves Raymond TV sitcom star and comic Brad Garrett.

In this no-holds-barred book of comedic and personal essays, Brad Garrett waxes hilarious—and irreverently honest—about the gaffes, challenges, and ultimately the joys of middle age as he advises us on how to best approach the dreaded “second half” of life.

Ranging in topics from genetics to genitals, weight to women, and dating to diarrhea, Brad leaves no stone unturned in this laugh-out-loud look at getting older. With pieces such as “No Scales in Heaven,” in which Brad points out the essential pointlessness of overthinking diet and exercise, and “Celebrating Your E.D. (erectile dysfunction) During Your Mid-Life Crisis,” the star comedian encourages you to forget the overwhelming concerns that accompany middle age and to welcome the laughs—even if you have a fifty-fifty chance of throwing your back out in doing so.

Penned in Brad’s signature witty, conversational, no-nonsense style that has cemented his status as an icon in the comedy industry, this autobiographical book will teach you the most important thing: that, no matter what, we’re all in this together. So embrace it.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This truly a book written for men but I loved Brad Garrett on Everybody Loves Raymond and most everywhere else I have seen him on television. After the past few months I seriously needed to read something that  would make me laugh. The book delivered that within the first few paragraphs.

I enjoyed him talking about his start in comedy and appearing on the Tonight Show and opening for Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. He also shares growing up taller than everyone around him and being bullied. Funny, he weighed the exact same at birth as my son that recently passed away. Kris’ height was pretty normal, his little brother only weighted 7 lbs. 14 oz. and he is the one that is over 6′ 4″. 🙂

It seems no topic is off limits for Garrett, his Jewish roots to erectile dysfunction to finding gray hairs in unexpected places. He writes just the way he talks during his comedy bits and tries to make everything funny. He also throws in a couple of rants about politics and A.A. Garrett now sober for quite some time has his own way of staying on the wagon.

I will warn you though he pulls no punches and his humor is not for everyone. There is foul and graphic language. But with a title like When the Balls Drop you probably already knew this.  For me it was just what I needed, to laugh and smile and forget even for just an evening. I will be sharing this book with my husband because he needs to escape and laugh a little too. I know he will like the book even more than I did.

This series was introduced with the novella Color Me Bad, which was a perfect escape. You can read my review here.

The character getting a fresh start in this story is LilyAnn Bronte. She was on top off the world, honor student, cheerleader, Peachy – Keen Queen and engaged to marry her high school sweetheart. Then  her fiance enlisted in the military and was killed in Iraq. She lost her zest for life, became withdrawn and gained some weight. When a new guy comes to Blessings, she decides that now may be the time to get her life back on track. But will she discover that her new love was already in town and was just waiting for her to realize it?

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I normally read mysteries but I love to add books like this to the mix. The Curl Up and Dye was such a fun read once I started reading I just could stop.

LilyAnn just stopped really living her life for 11 years after her finance was killed. She lived in her childhood home left to her by her parents, stayed working at the same local drugstore, and she never finished college. Her friends moved on and most of them away. The only thing she treated herself to was a weekly hair appointment at The Curl Up and Dye.  Ruby, the owner and Vera and Vesta, the other stylists wished there was something they could do to help her. Then Ruby had an idea….

This book is not your typical romance novel. It is jammed packed with humor and sensitivity. It has been labeled as Wally Lamb meets Steel Magnolias and that sure fits. A beauty shop anywhere is the place for gossip and The Curl Up and Dye is no exception.

I just love the expression “Bless her heart” and knowing its true Southern meaning. But it is lines like this that really had me smiling.

“Dang girl, you’re not nearly as big as you were the last time we were here.”

“Eddie Gleason! I can’t believe that just came out of your mouth. I’m sorry LilyAnn. I have yet to meet a man who could breathe and make sense at the same time…”

This story was a breath of fresh air and I truly enjoyed it from start to finish. Blessings, Georgia is a special place full of good people and Southern charm. I hope I get to visit there again real soon!!

Divorced father Austin Carr wakes up every day in a beat-up camper, parked on someone else’s private property. Why? Because his alimony and child support payments were established by New Jersey’s family court system when his income was double, and for the last two years he has failed to earn the legally mandated monthly nut. He’s had his savings drained, his Maxima repossessed, his salary attached, and his visiting rights suspended. He bought the twelve-year-old Chevy pick-up with the rusty camper for $800 last month because another landlord tossed his butt in the street.

Will stretching the rules, his own morals, and the boundaries of common sense raise the cash needed to get his kids back? Or will his big mouth and bad behavior set him up for a nasty double-cross? Find out if Austin can redeem himself and win back his children.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Man, I thought I had bad luck! Austin Carr seems to be cursed and his ex-wife sounds like she was based on my ex-daughter-in-law. So I clearly had a soft spot for Austin from the beginning.

This story covers his life for about 3 short weeks in his life and Austin ends up in the emergency room more times than I can count, wonder if he had insurance 🙂 While tragic circumstances seem to sneak up all around him, Austin has a keen sense of humor and even when facing his own death he comes up with some classic one-liners. The author calls the story a “screwball mystery” and that describes it perfectly. It is full of suspense with snippets that will make you laugh out loud.

All Austin wants is get get his ex off his back so he can spend time with his kids. He owes her a lot of back support to make that happen so he is drawn into an unusual scheme or schemes and at times he in way over his head, drowning quite literally.

Getze has created a sensational character in Austin Carr. Even when he is breaking the law you want him to come out on top. Let’s face it a guy who wears a Speedo to his daughter’s swim competition to go unnoticed can’t be all bad.

If you like your mysteries with plenty of thrills with a side of crazy these pages will be flying. I hated for this book to end!!! I can’t wait for the re-release of Big Money!!!

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.

Vinnie is just trying to rebuild his bail bonds office but that is not happening easily. When the backhoe shows up to prepare the sight they find much more than they bargained for.  Not just one dead body but two and there could be more.

Stephanie just wants to pick up her FTA’s and collect her pay but she can’t help but do a little investigating. She needs to do something to get her mind off the curse Morelli’s grandmother put on her and her family has decided she really needs to settle down so they are throwing yet another man at her.

When she finds out the dead bodies have been left to scare her, she realizes the killer may be after her next.

With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie’s life looks like it’s about to go up in smoke.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Sunday afternoon I was in the mood to read something fun. It didn’t take me long to pick up this book. You just can’t go wrong with a Stephanie Plum novel. They are quick reads and like always this one had me laughing out loud.

Let’s see besides the dead bodies, you have a man that always seems to answer his door stark naked who found out how quickly Lula can blow if you call her “fat”. Then you have another man who has failed to appear who thinks he is a vampire and will only come out at night. Another man who has no money so he leaves his “dancing bear” with Vinnie as collateral. Oh my this batch of bailed out individuals were something else.

Of course you have the regular cast of characters, “hunkalicious” Ranger, “McDreamy” Morelli, bodacious Lula, and Crazy Grandma Mazur all keep Stephanie’s life in utter chaos.

As any series that goes on this long things can get a little stale sometimes but it was the perfect pick me up for me. Just what I needed.
