Synopsis:
Richmond attorney Sarah Tucker returns to sell her family’s abandoned farm in Misty River, Virginia despite unanswered questions about her grandparents’ disappearance sixteen years earlier. Sarah was only twelve when she went to visit and found her grandparents had vanished. No amount of searching has brought answers.

Now Sarah is faced with other issues when a man is killed who claimed to have information about what happened to her grandparents. She learns of a Confederate chest of gold that is said to be buried on the property, and treasure hunters who are willing to do anything to get their hands on it.

Were her grandparents murdered for the gold? Sarah can’t sell the land and go back to her life until she has answers. But the cost of the answers may be her life.
Includes farm-fresh recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This series is off to an AWESOME start!

Imagine your grandparents just disappearing, clothes in the closets, food on the table, poof they are just gone. An investigation at the time turned up no leads and their property just sat there. Now Sarah Tucker has come back to ready the place for sale. She hadn’t been there for 16 years. She sees someone has been taking some care of the property. A friend from her past. She finds after reconnecting with him and others she really needs answers before she can sell the place and walk away. She has too many wonderful memories that have come rushing back. She is all set to meet with a man that may help her but he is killed before they have a chance to talk.  In her quest to find answers elsewhere she learns a treasure may be buried on the property and that opens the door to many possibilities that may not only help her find out about her grandparents but also why the man who wanted to help her was killed.

I was swallowed up by this story from the very first page.  Misty River is one of those small towns that young folks tend to leave as soon as they are able but those that stay or never leave realize the joy a small town can bring. A town where everyone knows your name and all your business but is there to help you in times of need or celebrate the times that are happy. A town where everyone gathers to raise a barn, a neighbor helps you mow your lawn, or an old friend helps you solve a mystery or two.

We meet Sarah Tucker, a very strong woman, that starts out with one objective that soon twists as she caught up in all the happenings of Misty River and trying to solve the murder.

Joyce and Jim have created some spectacular supporting characters. Jack who has been basically squatting on her grandparents farm, her friend Kathy, who was her best friend back all those years ago when she visited her grandparents, Mr. Pope and his family that live on the place next door, and Sheriff Morgan, who seems to see the best in everyone, even though someone has to be a murderer. Everyone remembers Sarah grandparents and how Sarah always came to visit. They also remember the pumpkin patch that thanks to Jack is still producing pumpkins. There is even a cameo of a couple characters for one of the Lavene’s other series, Dr. Peggy Lee and her husband, Steve Newsome, formerly of the FBI.

The Lavenes has penned a fantastic mystery with so many twists and turns you will nor be able to put this book down until you reach the last word.  Al I can say is I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next installment because I want it right now!

dead girl blues spotlightOkay, I admit the undead really aren’t my thing. But I love Joyce and Jim Lavene and if anyone could get me to read a book featuring Life Extended People (LEPs – a nice term for zombies) it would be them. Plus this book and the one before it are getting excellent reviews. So while I am thinking about diving into this world I thought I would share these books with you.

The Series starts with
Broken Hearted Ghoul
(Taxi for the Dead Paranormal Mysteries Book 1)

It’s been two years since Skye Mertz agreed to drive Abe’s Taxi for the Dead, transporting his zombie workers back to the man who gave them an additional twenty years of life. She’s raising her daughter, with the help of her ghostly mother-in-law, and keeps looking for what killed her husband the night she died.

Now she has a partner—a housewife working off her zombie husband’s service—and she’s met a sorcerer with amnesia. It shouldn’t be surprising that a broken hearted ghoul, bent on getting revenge, should show up too. After all, there’s no rest for the dead.

Then the new book in the series –
Dead Girl Blues
(Taxi for the Dead Book 2)

When Nashville cop Skye Mertz, and her husband, Jacob, are killed in a wreck, Skye is given the opportunity to come back for twenty years to raise her five-year-old daughter, Kate. With her ghostly mother-in-law’s help, Skye hopes to be there until Kate is old enough to take care of herself.

But three years into her twenty-year service to Abraham Lincoln Jones, the man who gave her the extra time, Skye is beginning to think life might have been easier before she died.

Abe asks her to investigate the murder of his sorcerer, Harold the Great, a man who was a victim of too many snakes. And the Life Extended People ( LEPs – a nice term for zombies) who work for Abe have begun turning into ghosts and disappearing. Only Lucas, the possibly evil, amnesiac sorcerer who lives with Skye and her family, can save her from being the next victim of the deadly curse.

To make matters more complicated, Skye has found a lead in solving the riddle of her husband’s death. She has never believed Jacob died as a result of the crash, but hasn’t been able to prove it. Many other people have lost their lives in the same lonely stretch of highway that he did three years before. Skye goes against Abe’s express wishes to discover the truth with a crazy man bent on vengeance.

Life was simpler when she could just take out a gun and shoot someone.

In just 2 weeks Jessie Morton and Chase Manhattan will become man and wife in one of the biggest Adventureland events ever. That is if Jessie can get Wanda’s ghost to behave and leaver her alone, get pass the fact that Chase’s family thinks she is all wrong for him and solve a murder or two. Maybe she and chase should just elope.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love these books. I have never been to an actual Renaissance Faire but because of these books I hope to attend one in the future. What a great ESCAPE from reality! Where else can you see Kings, Queens, Lords, Ladies, madmen, fairies, mermaids, dragons, Robin Hood and hundreds of people in full costume walking about enjoying the fantasy of it all? Plus the food, don’t forget the food.

Joyce and Jim Lavene take us there and they add the suspense of a murder or two in each installment. The descriptions are so vivid. I can see Sherwood Forest, the castle, the dungeon, the streets, the shoppes and every colorful character. Their words paint beautiful pictures in my mind. Even the curmudgeonly outsiders who enter the village who don’t believe. It is usually the outside police that come in to assist Chase but this time it includes Chase’s family as well.

This story has a great mystery with plenty of suspects to keep us guessing – Fabulous characters including a ghost – Takes place in a fantastic setting. I love reading stories that leave me smiling at the end with a few giggles throughout and anxious for the next book.

You just can’t go wrong with a Joyce and Jim Lavene mystery. (Or a J.J. Cook or an Ellie Grant, yep, that’s them too!) While I would recommend reading the series from the start the authors do a wonderful job making each book read well all on its own. Congrats Joyce and Jim and thank you for inviting me to the spectacular wedding!!

Hooked Up

Glad and Ruby are back and Ruby’s parents are going with them to the Monster Mile in Dover, Delaware. Ruby and her mom are traveling in one RV and Glad and Zeke are in another. They arrive at the campground and Glad is shocked when he finds a strange man in his bed wearing his pajamas. Ruby quickly tries to defuse the situation by explaining that they picked up the man and his cat hitchhiking along the road. Glad is not happy but what can he do? While they are discussing the situation the man has disappeared from the bedroom but has left behind his cat.

Then there is a commotion on the track. Someone has fallen from the Monster Bridge onto the raceway. Glad and Ruby follow the crowd and Ruby soon identifies the victim as her hitchhiker. We soon learn that the man is the twin brother of the man who owns the nearby Casino and Hotel. The rumors start to circle the track that there was a story of 10 million dollars disappearing some years back and the casino owner was involved.

Ruby starts to jump to some conclusions and thinks because of their past success they need to investigate even after the local police have classified the death as a suicide. Glad wants to sit back and enjoy the race festivities but he can’t let Ruby race off by herself. They are again chasing down the crooks when all Glad wants to see which drivers make the chase.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another trip to the Winner’s Circle for Joyce and Jim Lavene!

I am so happy my favorite NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth made this installment. Glad is a Joe Nemecheck fan and Ruby cheers for Jimmy Johnson. Ruby and I would probably come to blows over our drivers. Johnson is boo’d regularly and heavily this house.

I also need to say that Zeke coming to the racetrack in this story put a huge smile on my face. Now if Ruby’s mom would just call Glad by his name instead of “Ruby’s husband”. You will notice in both my reviews I have not used Ruby’s mom, Zeke’s wife or Glad’s mother-in-law’s name. 🙂

Both of the Stock Car Mysteries are full with track details including Glad and Ruby’s Track Logs.  The settings are described perfectly, you feel like you are out to the track. I am really sad there was not more installments in this series. It would be great fun to travel around the country with Glad and Ruby. Keeping my fingers crossed The Lavene’s have more of these stories under the hood. Hooked Up is another keeper!

Glad Wycznewski lives for three things: NASCAR, cold beer and his passionate wife Ruby. Glad is a retired cop from Chicago and Ruby has left her job as a beautician so that they can follow the racing circuit in their RV. The newlyweds, married last year at the racetrack in Somona, have just arrived in North Carolina for the Coca-Cola 600. The track is just down the road from Ruby’s hometown. They are excited because Ruby’s brother, Bobby, a rookie driver, may be one of the lucky 43 racing in the 600.

The race week excitement hits the wall when another rookie driver is found dead and Bobby becomes the number one suspect. Glad wants to stay out of the locals way but Ruby has other ideas. She is determined to track down the real killer. They throw caution to the wind and shift their investigation into overdrive so they can put the murderer behind bars before the checkered flag waves.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am a huge NASCAR fan and this series had been on my wish list for way too long. There was no Cup race last Sunday so I spent my time reading this book instead of watching a race. I loved this book and it is going on my keeper shelf.

Glad and Ruby make an awesome team. Ruby is sassy, stubborn and her mouth has no filter. These traits can all mean trouble when investigating a murder. Thankfully Glad is smart with wonderful detective skills and very patient. They are perfectly suited for each other even if they are a generation apart in age. They clearly adore each other and their dialogue is funny and natural.

Other than the main characters I would have to say Ruby’s dad, Zeke, was my favorite character in this story. Zeke’s only love besides his family is fast cars. He has worked for almost every race car driver in the business. That was until he broke his back 5 years ago. He is now confined to a wheelchair and doesn’t even go to the races anymore. Like me he is worried about how people will treat him in his disabled state. I hope he realizes like I did that the those that care about you, won’t care about the chair, and those that treat you differently weren’t your friends in the first place. I really identified with this character.

Jim and Joyce Lavene are wonderful writers. This is just one of their mystery series. I have enjoyed everything I have read that they have written and plan to read them all. I hope you will join me! Their current mystery series’ are the Missing Pieces Mysteries and the Renaissance Faire Mysteries. Both series have new installments coming soon.
