A Cajun Christmas Killing: A Cajun Country Mystery

Hardcover: 304 pages

Maggie Crozat is back home in bayou country during the most magical time of the year. In Pelican, Louisiana, Christmastime is a season of giant bonfires on the levee, zydeco carols, and pots of gumbo. Except, this year, the Grinch has come to stay at the family-run Crozat Plantation B&B. When he floods travel websites with vicious reviews, Maggie thinks she’s identified him as rival businessman Donald Baxter. That is, until he’s found stabbed to death at Maggie’s workplace. And Maggie and her loved ones become top suspects.

The Crozats quickly establish alibis, but Maggie’s boyfriend, Detective Bo Durand, remains under suspicion. With Bo sidelined during the investigation, Maggie finds herself forced to work with an unlikely ally: longtime family enemy Rufus Durand. Her sleuthing uncovers more suspects than drummers drumming, and lands her in the crosshairs of the murderer.

The sleigh bells are jingling, and the clock is ticking for Maggie and Rufus, who must catch the killer or it will be the opposite of a Joyeux Noël in A Cajun Christmas Killing, the recipe-stuffed third installment of USA Today bestselling author Ellen Byron’s Cajun Country mysteries.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Christmas in Pelican sounds just fantastic! Huge bonfires on the bayou, yummy food, special carols and people coming together to celebrate. The whole town is excited and getting ready. Then Donald Baxter is found dead at Doucet and the whole Crozat family are lined up on the suspect list. Even Detective Bo Durand makes the list and is pulled off the investigation. Rufus Durand and Maggie make an unlikely team but there is too much at stake to deal with a family feud. They need to catch the killer before anyone else ends up dead and puts an end to everyone’s happy holiday.

Ellen Byron writes the kind of story that I love to escape right into. Never having been anywhere near the Louisiana bayou I depend on her words to take me there and she does it so wonderfully. I loved learning the traditions so unlike those here in Wisconsin. While we do eat a lot during the season, it is more the usual turkey and cranberry meals, not a pot of gumbo. No bonfires here either but usually way too much snow. These differences help to draw me in but it is the characters and the suspense that make me stay.

The characters are wrapped up in so much, the new manger at Doucet is really shaking things up, Tug has a health scare, someone is writing trashy reviews about the B&B, Maggie ex comes to town, and Maggie and Bo’s relationship is growing and becoming more known. All that before the murder of Donald Baxter.  All these plot lines come together in this marvelous mystery.

All the characters have continue to evolve and the way they handle all the situations that arise is very believable. I really love they family feel of this story. Everyone is welcome whether truly related or just a friend. A true Christmas feeling.

I have loved each book in the series but this one is my favorite.  The intrigue built as the pages kept turning but there are several bits of humor too. A perfect mystery to curl up and read this holiday season.

Lacy Marie Crocker has settled into a comfortable groove back home in New Orleans, and with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, she’s busier than ever running a thriving pet boutique, helping her mother organize the upcoming National Pet Pageant, and untangling her complicated love life. But when delivering a king-sized order of dreidel-shaped doggy biscuits for a Saint Berdoodle’s bark-mitzvah, Lacy stumbles into yet another murder scene—and the last person to see the victim alive was her own father.

It’s up to Lacy to clear her dad’s name from the suspect list before Detective Jack Oliver has to cage him for good. But just when she starts pawing at the truth, she receives a threatening letter from a mysterious blackmailer bent on silencing her with her own secrets. And Lacy’s not the only one with bones in her closet.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

An absolutely delightful new cozy from Julie Chase! Doesn’t that grab you right away?

Lacy’s back and this time her father has been accused of murdering his best friend. Her dad goes into slump, her mother is in denial and worried more about upcoming National Pet Pageant, Lacy  goes into overdrive to find proof so that Detective Jack Oliver will leave her dad alone and find the real killer. The tables turn on Lacy when she receives an envelope and finds herself in the cross hairs of a blackmailer. To Jack’s dismay Lacy acts again without thinking things through and puts herself in danger.

I love Lacy Crocker. She is creative and smart and devoted to her dad. When she learns he was with his friend so close to the time of his death she knows exactly what Jack is going to do. She tries to warn her mother but she doesn’t think it is a big deal until they take her husband to the station for questioning. Then she expects Lacy to fix everything.

Lacy’s mother is very demanding without her husband in the hot seat. This time she not only expects Lacy to clear her father but she also puts her on the Pet Pageant committee, a committee that she chairs. She has declared that all committee members to dress in pastels for an entire month. Remember Lacy is also running a business, a business where sales should increase when the pageant takes place. She also has several special orders. All this before she even tries to have any private life. So murder, blackmail, a new wardrobe, her business, a pageant, and normal life. Lacy’s plate is more than overflowing. This mother/daughter relationship ebbs and flows. Lacy doesn’t ever want to hurt her mom’s feelings but it is hard work. As the story continues the relationship starts to brighten but I feel for Lacy so much under all that weight.

The private life I mentioned includes attorney Chase Hawthorne and Detective Jack Oliver. They each have their pluses and minuses.  I remain on Team Jack!

The focus of the story lets us get to know some of the supporting characters. Imogene, Lacy’s former nanny takes on the heavy load of The Furry Grandmother while Lacy does her investigating and Scarlet helps Lacy with the case as she taps into the gossip train around town. But it is Penelope and Spot that always make me smile and laugh.

The mystery is well written and keeps a steady pace from beginning to end. The subplots and main plot flow together nicely. Secrets, secrets and more secrets drive this story. The plot takes an interesting twist that brings many more suspects to the forefront. The drama escalates when Lacy finds herself in more than a little danger. My pages were turning briskly.

The story takes place around Valentine’s day and it was fun to see people shopping for their pets.

I adore this series. Fun characters and themes and entertaining mysteries. I do suggest you read them in order to get to know the characters from the start. They are all perfect escapes!

Dead on the Bayou (A Twin Sisters Mystery)

Dead on the Bayou (A Twin Sisters Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Lyrical Underground (August 22, 2017)
Paperback: 192 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1516100965
E-Book ASIN: B01N3ZNZVL

It may be easier to patch up an old home than a broken heart. But along the Louisiana bayou, where beauty and danger mingle all too seamlessly, thoughts of romance may have to simmer on the back burner . . .

Twin sisters and fellow divorcees Sunny Taylor and Eve Vaughn have established their home repair and remodeling business with an eye toward quality and personal attention. So when they’re approached by hunky Dave Price to fix up his bayou fishing camp, they’re more than happy to take the job—especially since they both secretly think he may prove to be more than just another satisfied customer . . .

The ramshackle campsite could certainly use a woman’s touch. What it does not need is a dead body—but that’s what the trio stumble across. Clearly, the poor soul was murdered—and once the town tongue-waggers get going, Sunny, Eve, and Dave come under suspicion of the police, not to mention potential clients . . .

Now, with their futures on the line, their brewing love triangle will have to wait. Helped—and harried—by the twins’ mother and her retirement home’s cadre of amateur sleuths, the trio starts snooping on their own. But when another dead body turns up, they’ll have to get their hands dirtier than a swamp-bottom snake if they hope to clear their names . . .

Cat Got Your Cash: A Kitty Couture Mystery
Cozy Mystery

Setting – Louisiana
Crooked Lane Books (April 11, 2017)
Hardcover: 336 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1683311089
E-Book ASIN: B01MR48G5L

Synopsis

Lacy Marie Crocker’s whimsical pet couture has gained a following in New Orleans’s cozy Garden District, and word of mouth has traveled all the way to her favorite fashion designer, Annie Lane. Lacy’s thrilled when Annie schedules a private session at her home to discuss a companion line for her evening wear, but when Lacy arrives for the appointment, she enters the kitchen to two mewling Siamese cats–and one very dead Annie.

Lacy takes the kittens home to care for them until they can be properly claimed by Annie’s family or friends, but after a busy day of work, she returns home to find them missing. And when Lacy learns the cats are set to inherit Annie’s fortune, she begins to wonder if the killer was after the kittens all along. Now Lacy will stop at nothing to save the Siamese and find justice for Annie–if the killer doesn’t sink his claws into her first.

Luckily, Lacy has the help of handsome NOLA PD homicide detective Jack Oliver to help her catch the cat-napper before its too late in Cat Got Your Cash, the endearing second Kitty Couture mystery from Julie Chase.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Isn’t the cover of this book just priceless. I couldn’t wait to start reading to find out how those Siamese kitties fit into the story. Their names are Cotton and Cashmere and it turns out they belong to fashion designer, Annie Lane. Sadly our protagonist Lacy Marie Crocker finds her dead when she shows up for a meeting. Lacy had been looking forward to working with her favorite designer on a companion line of pet couture creations. Now she has been asked to care for her cats and that seems to put her in danger. Those cute little cats come with a huge trust fund so could Annie have been killed just so the killer could get their hands on them and the CASH. Would they kill again to get what they want. NOLA PD homicide detective Jack Oliver is on the case but Lacy pushes herself right into his investigation.

Lacy is a girl after my own heart. Her creativity shines in the hats, scarves, capes and more that she makes for cats, dogs, and even llamas. Her mother is all about her finding a good husband and thinks attorney Chase Hawthorne would be the perfect match.  But I am on team Jack, the man so clearly in love with her even though she just doesn’t see it. Her dad is more of a go with the flow guy. He is always there for his daughter. Their relationship is strong, close, and heartwarming. She also has a fur baby named Penelope. This cat will give you more than one laugh out loud moment.

The author gives us several suspects from the designer’s ex-husband to her assistant, another designer, and even some bloggers. They are all viable suspects so it was fun parrying them down. The ending took me totally by surprise. What a fabulous twist!

Julie Chase is an awesome storyteller. These characters really pop and the mystery pulls you right in. The cover grabbed my attention and the story held it from start to finish.

Another cat-ivating cozy to add to your lists!

Synopsis:

The Crozats feared that past murders at Crozat Plantation B&B might spell the death of their beloved estate, but they’ve managed to survive the scandal. Now there’s a très bigger story in Pelican, Louisiana: the upcoming nuptials between Maggie Crozat’s nemesis, Police Chief Rufus Durand, and her co-worker, Vanessa Fleer.

When everyone else refuses the job of being Vanessa’s Maid of Honor, Maggie reluctantly takes up the title and finds herself tasked with a long list of duties–the most important of which is entertaining Vanessa’s cousin, Ginger Fleer-Starke. But just days before the wedding, Ginger’s lifeless body is found on the bayou and the Pelican PD, as well as the Crozats, have another murder mystery on their hands.

There’s a gumbo-potful of suspects, including an ex-Marine with PTSD, an annoying local newspaper reporter, and Vanessa’s own sparkplug of a mother. But when it looks like the investigation is zeroing in on Vanessa as the prime suspect, Maggie reluctantly adds keeping the bride-to-be out of jail to her list of Maid of Honor responsibilities in Body on the Bayou.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We return to Pelican, Louisiana and the Crozat Plantation B&B. Our protagonist Maggie Crozat has become maid of honor for Vanessa, one of her coworkers, because everyone else ran away from the job. With Vanessa due to deliver a baby soon, she has heaped most of the wedding plans on Maggie’s shoulders. Vanessa and her mom both expect Maggie to just do everything they ask and do it immediately.  She also has Vanessa’s cousin Ginger and her entourage staying at the family B&B. When the cousin is found dead just a couple of days before the wedding and the police suspect list keeps growing it looks like Maggie will be adding “find the killer” to her long list of duties.

First let me say, Maggie has the patience of a saint. Dealing with Vanessa, her mom and the groom, Police Chief Rufus Durand, would have most people throwing in the towel before they completed the first task.

Ellen Byron has created some very multidimensional characters and their growth from the first book is very clear. The undercover romance of Maggie and Bo continues and hits some bumps as his ex-wife comes to town. His autistic son is excelling in his art lessons with Maggie though and she enjoys their time together.  Her family pulls together in the story not only to help Maggie but they also take in some new kittens and puppies that were found by the bayou. These little guys stole everyone’s heart.

She took all the characters and wrapped them into a complex mystery. The ending caught me completely by surprise due to some very intricate twists and turns. As I eliminated suspects in my mind a twist had me seeing things differently.

The covers of both the books in this series are beautiful and made me want to escape right into these stories. I have never been to Louisiana but the covers and author descriptions make me feel like I have been there. She also describes the glorious Cajun cuisine in the most mouthwatering way. Yes, there are recipes at the end of the story.

Love this series and hope to return to Pelican soon!

perfect 2016

I am so happy to have Terrie Farley Moran Farley back for a visit!
Her new book written with Laura Childs, Crepe Factor was released on October 4!

guest postterrie farley moranA few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend Bouchercon, the largest mystery conference in the world. To add to my joy, Bouchercon 2016 was held in New Orleans, home of Carmela Bertrand, owner of the Memory Mine Scrapbooking Shop and her Best Friend Forever Ava Gruiex.

Cozy lovers that you are, I’m sure everyone is familiar with Carmela and Ava from the totally fun and always mysterious Scrapbooking Series by Laura Childs. I am shining my buttons when I say that I have been honored to assist in writing two recent books in the series, Parchment and Old Lace, as well as the newly released Crepe Factor.

I have to be honest. I half expected Carmela to be standing at the gate when I arrived at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. I could almost see her struggling to restrain Boo and Poobah while they strained at their leashes trying to give me big, sloppy kisses. And I could hardly wait to see what kind of sexy, crazy outfit Ava would be wearing.

Alas, that was a fantasy unfulfilled.

governor-nichollsStill, I decided to satisfy my imagination by walking in Carmela’s footprints all over the Big Easy. My very first stop when I ventured out of my hotel was Governor Nicholls Street—home of Memory Mine, which is right on the cover of Crepe Factor. I brought you all a picture of the corner so you could see how the shop fits right in with the neighborhood.

And then I roamed around the French Quarter imagining Carmela and Ava scrambling from here to there, sometimes doing errands but often investigating a murder, no matter how many times Carmela’s handsome beau, Detective Edgar Babcock, warns them off.

store fronts

Everyone posts pictures of the French Quarter at night but I want you to see the daytime look of the French Quarter. This is how Carmela and Ava see it in their everyday life.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And I can’t leave without showing you this terrific picture (thanks to author Robert Mangeot!) of Jackson Square with St. Louis Cathedral rising majestically in the background. And in this close up of the Cathedral, I can imagine Carmela walking through those doors to meet Babcock for a romantic holiday concert.

Now while you are reading Crepe Factor, you can see the streets just the way Carmela does. Oh and I have a message from Carmela and Ava:

The Winter Market in the French Quarter is in full swing, but murder isn’t taking a holiday in the latest from the New York Times bestselling author of Parchment and Old Lace…

The holidays are a busy time for scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand—but not so hectic that she doesn’t have time to enjoy browsing the booths at the Winter Market with her best friend Ava. The last thing the ladies expect to see is a lurching man stabbed by a serving fork, dying in front of them.

The victim is loathed restaurant critic Martin Lash, who posted his scathing reviews on the Glutton for Punishment website. And the prime suspect is New Orleans restauranteur Quigg Brevard—who was seen giving the critic a tongue-lashing minutes before someone stuck a fork in him. An old flame of Carmela, Quigg asks for her help, which does not please her current beau, Detective Edgar Babcock, to say the least.

Before her relationship is the next victim, Carmela needs to find a murderer who had no reservations about punishing the culinary curmudgeon…

Scrapbooking tips and recipes included!

Hat designer Missy DuBois opened her shop, Crowning Glory, along Louisiana’s Great River Road to cater to the sophisticated Southern bride. But bless her heart, who knew creating stylish wedding veils would lead to murder?

Hired to craft a veil for a socialite getting married at Morningside Plantation means Missy can bask in the height of antebellum atmosphere. But when the bride is found dead in a women’s bathroom, Missy the milliner finds herself entangled in one unfashionable murder. With the list of suspects thicker than the sweltering Louisiana heat, including a gaggle of bridesmaids shedding nary a tear and a family with no shortage of enemies, it seems anyone at the mansion may have done away with the bride-to-be. While Missy has Southern charm to spare, she’s going to need more than manners and a manicure to put a hat pin on this murderous affair . . .

I am absolutely delighted to welcome Jacklyn Brady to Escape With Dollycas today!

Jacklyn Brady 01

Thanks so much for inviting me to visit your blog today. I’m thrilled to be here.

One of the most frequent questions I get as a writer is where ideas for a book come from. There’s no one answer, of course. Sometimes an idea comes in a flash. I might see a character in my imagination or overhear a snippet of conversation, and my creative muse is off and running. Those times are great, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love when that happens.

cakes of monte cristoThere are other times, however, when the idea is more elusive, the thread of a plot harder to find, the characters more difficult to discover. Most writers like to talk about those flash-of-inspiration moments because they’re interesting and exciting. I think readers like to hear about them, too. I know I do. But I’m afraid that finding the plot and the characters for The Cakes of Monte Cristo wasn’t one of those lovely experiences.

I had the idea for signing Rita up to cater the Belle Lune Ball while writing Rebel Without a Cake. It seemed like a great idea, a chance for Rita and the crew to stretch and grow. Besides, the title for The Cakes of Monte Cristo had come to me in a flash, and I loved it. But when I sat down to write the book, that’s all I had–an obligation for Rita established in the previous novel and a title I adored. Nothing else.

Milk Explosion PubDomainI’d already created the Monte Cristo Hotel in Rebel so that locked me into holding the Belle Lune Ball there, but I didn’t worry. I was so excited about the title, I expected the ideas to pour forth like … well, like something wonderful and fluid.

Dried Mud Pub DomainInstead, the ideas were hidden under layers of thick, dried mud.

It took a while and a lot of brainstorming with my editor at the time to excavate the plot and find the treasure that had been hidden at Zydeco Cakes this whole time. I think we were both as surprised to find it as Rita is. It took a while longer to discover the characters. Rita hired no less than six assistants to fill in for Edie while she’s on maternity leave before Estelle finally suggested her niece, Zoey. But once Zoey showed up, I knew we had our gal.

As difficult as the story was to chip out of the rock, I grew to love it and the characters involved as I wrote. Every day brought something new and unexpected. Every conversation between Rita and her friends, family and co-workers was a revelation. Characters did and said things I wasn’t expecting, and I had no idea how the book was going to end until Rita and I got there together.

I don’t know about other writers, but for me, a hard-won book earns a very special place in my heart. The Cakes of Monte Cristo is going on that shelf, for sure. To make it even more special, the art department at Berkley Prime Crime did a terrific job with the cover. I love the dress cakes!

Thanks so much for having me. I hope you and your readers enjoy the book.

~Jacklyn

In the fresh new Piece of Cake Mystery from the national bestselling author of Rebel Without a Cake, a pastry chef becomes embroiled in a suspicious death as a mysterious curse casts a pall over an annual New Orleans ball.

Rita Lucero, co-owner of New Orleans’s Zydeco Cakes, is thrilled to be catering an annual ball held at the Monte Cristo Hotel. Designing the high-end desserts is her priority—until she stumbles upon a mystery long-buried at her shop. It’s an ornate ruby necklace, hidden underneath her staircase and rumored to be cursed.

After the gem’s appraiser suddenly drops dead and Rita herself is targeted by a menacing stranger, she’s no longer laughing at local superstition. Now with five cakes on order and an investigation into the necklace’s past revealing layers of unsettling clues, Rita has reason to keep looking over her shoulder while she’s frosting. Because any way you slice it, the next victim of the legendary curse could be her.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am so glad we finally return to New Orleans and Zydeco Cakes. The author set us up in Rebel Without A Cake for The Cakes of Monte Cristo and Rita and her staff are taking on their biggest job ever, the Belle Lune Ball.  They needed to bake 5 gorgeous dress form cakes complete with the accessories and they are catering the affair too. When the Monte Cristo Hotel ballroom is flooded just days before the event Rita has to settle for a smaller venue, but at least it is still in the same hotel. As if she doesn’t have enough on her plate, Zydeco is short staffed because Edie is out on maternity leave and the temps to replace her have been nightmares. Rita finally hires Estelle’s niece, Zoey. Rita vows to make it work even after a freak accident that destroys part of the beautiful old home that houses the business. Especially when a very interesting discovery is made. A discovery that leaves one woman dead and Rita extra cautious as she tries to piece together all the clues before she gets herself frosted.

I love this series! These characters are some of the best ones around. They work together from early morning until sometimes late at night. They go out for drinks together and have fun. They are as close as family and genuinely care about each other. Like family they have their little spats too. They also bake the most amazing cakes! The cover is nice but the picture I have in my head from the descriptions is nothing like on the cover. Rita makes so many peacock like feathers out of fondant and paints them all to look so real. The image is crystal clear in my mind along with all the other beautiful dress creations that were made. Thank you Jacklyn for the amazing imagery brought forth from your words.

The author not only paints us beautiful pictures with her words, she crafts quite a plot as well. She gives us plenty of twists, surprises, and a few tense moments before we reach the end. She introduces some new characters and one quickly got on Rita’s nerves and mine too, well frankly everyone around her. No, she wasn’t killed but I would not have been surprised. There is always the next book. 🙂

I do hope there is a next book, or two or three and we don’t have to wait too long for a return. Each of these characters “slice” of life has been delightful. If you haven’t taken a bite out of this series yet, start at the beginning and enjoy! You can thank me later.

Synopsis:
Check in for some Southern hospitality in Plantation Shudders, the Cajun Country series debut from Ellen Byron.

It’s the end of the summer and Prodigal Daughter Maggie Crozat has returned home to her family’s plantation-turned-bed-and-breakfast in Louisiana. The Crozats have an inn full of guests for the local food festival–elderly honeymooners, the Cajun Cuties, a mysterious stranger from Texas, a couple of hipster lovebirds, and a trio of Georgia frat boys. But when the elderly couple keels over dead within minutes of each other–one from very unnatural causes– Maggie and the others suddenly become suspects in a murder.

With the help of Bo Durant, the town’s handsome new detective, Maggie must investigate to clear her name while holding the family business together at the same time. And the deeper she digs, the more she wonders: are all of the guests really there for a vacation or do they have ulterior motives? Decades-old secrets and stunning revelations abound in Ellen Byron’s charming cozy debut, Plantation Shudders.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Look at that cover, that house is gorgeous. I knew I had to read this book as soon as I saw the cover. I can totally understand the need to turn it into a Bed & Breakfast. The costs to upkeep such a beautiful home must be astronomical. Of course when you invite people you don’t know into your home you are never sure who is going to show up. This end of the summer group are quite a unique bunch. Frat boys, lovebirds, a family with kids, a Texan, and then the elderly honeymooners that check out permanently before their stay barely begins. The cards are stacked against the Crozats, the people died in their B&B and Sheriff Ru Durand would love to see them lose their family home. He is a man carrying a huge chip on his shoulder. Thankfully his cousin Bo  has come to town and he is a detective with an open mind and someone Maggie would like to get to know better after this murder mess is cleaned up.

The story was full of Southern charm and mouth watering Cajun cooking. Don’t worry, recipes are in the back of the book.  I have never been to Louisiana but Byron’s words sure transported me there. I could almost feel the humidity and the few breezes that came through. I could definitely smell the food!

The author has created really wonderful characters. Characters that I wanted to get to know better immediately. They are a pretty diverse group.  Some of them I truly liked and others not so much, but they all had key roles to play and they played them very well. What I really like is that they have room to grow.

The whodunit had me scratching my head several times, everyone seemed to have a secret. The twists kept turning in directions I didn’t want them to go.  Thankfully Maggie doesn’t give up as she knows the sheriff isn’t doing much detecting. Bo Durant was such a breath of fresh air. He was professional and tried to move the case along. He knew the Crozats were losing money and their business was in jeopardy.

I enjoyed the romantic tension flying between Maggie and Bo. You just know that the feud between the families is going to make a relationship between pretty difficult. I can’t wait to read how it plays out. I shudder to think what could happen next.

This is a great debut for this series!
