The Barksalot Twins

It was a quiet week around here and it felt so good. My Dollycas went back to work on Monday and the dogs and I got back to our normal routine. Me at the computer and them napping and saving me from the dreaded mail carrier who had the nerve to put mail in our mailbox. Since Oreo has lost her hearing Nerabelle was the clear instigator. The UPS man wasn’t even noticed when he dropped a package later in the day 🙂

I read some good books, watched some stupid television,  CBS isn’t even trying to hide how blatantly Big Brother is rigged this year. Daughter #2 is thrilled Cody is back in the game, me, not at all. So if I stop watching that I will have even more time to read which I would rather do anyway.

How was your week?

Still working on my quest to smile more. July 15 marked 28 months since my son took his life. It has been a hard month, both my birthday and Mr. Dollycas’ birthday are in July, Independence Day and we always used to have a family fun day in July. All times that we get together with family shines a bright light that Kris is missing at least physically. We all carry him in our hearts. The grandchildren always make me smile though.

I hope you all have an amazing week!

Happy Sunday Everyone!

After 6 weeks Mr. Dollycas returns to work tomorrow! Because he has a desk job his doctor has cleared him to return to work but he must listen to his body and rest as needed. He will need to have a procedure in 3 to 4 months to remove any fluid that remains around the pancreas. He has lost a bunch of weight and needs to follow a strict diet. I am excited not only because he is feeling better but because it will be just the me and the dogs again during a few hours a day. It is amazing how distracting it has been with him around the house. There will be some adjustment because the dogs have gotten pretty spoiled with him here.  They don’t like to let him out of their site. Today also happens to be his birthday!

Don’t Rain On My Parade

This was a week that felt like it had two Mondays 🙂 but we did have fun on the 4th. Our family always goes to my mother-in-law’s house on the 4th for fun and food. We start the day at the parade but this year getting to our regular parade spot was a little more complicated. Because of my disability and Mr. Dollycas still recovering from his long hospital stay his mom rented a golf cart to get us into town. (Otherwise everyone walks and I and the little kids get pushed) Well the golf cart was used to get a few other people to their spots and we were the last ones to go. We knew we were cutting it close and getting behind a slow moving fire truck didn’t help. When we reached town the parade had just started and the police officer would not let us pass, even to just go on the side of the road where other golf carts carrying toys, food and water were traveling. Disappointed as this would be the 1st parade either of us had ever missed we told our nephew who was driving to take us back. He said “just a minute” and hopped off the cart and went over to one of the parade organizers, someone Jeff and I had known for years. I am not sure what our nephew said, he didn’t even realize we knew the man, but the next thing we knew our golf cart was directed to take our place behind a float and we became part of the parade for about a block until we reached our spot. We were laughing and waving. It is something we won’t forget and we have promised not to cut it so close next year 🙂 Mr. Dollycas was pretty warn out after the parade so he spent the rest of the day napping and watching the Brewers while the water balloon fights and other craziness took place outside. It is always a good day when you spend it with those you love.

Mr. Dollycas’ seat for the parade.

The rest of our gang watching the parade.

It was a really good week. Mr. Dollycas came home on Monday to continue his recovery and he is doing really well. When he tries to do too much I need to rein him in, but it is so good to have him home.

Yesterday was my birthday and Daughter #1 brought the boys up and stayed overnight. They went to the carnival for awhile and us girls watched on old Backstreet Boys/New Kids on the Block concert on television followed by the Backstreet Boys movie. Through the girls I have become a huge fan. So it was a very relaxing day.

My husband made huge strides this week. Additions of real food continued and by Friday the IVs were all removed. He can now take his pain medication orally, but the pain has really diminished only increasing after he eats when the stomach and pancreas need to do their work. The doctors are very pleased with his progress. While he is very rundown we hope he will be able to come home late next week. It will take time to regain his strength and may need some physical therapy. It is going to be a while before he will be able to return to work. I will just be happy to have him home. I knew he was better as soon as he requested his laptop so I am hoping he will be posting about himself on Facebook soon.

Happy Sunday Everyone!

This week was a bit better. After talking to my husband’s doctor last Saturday I was scared to death. This week we have seen small steps of improvement. Pain is being managed now at a 5-6 level instead of off the charts, even allowing him to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time. His doctors have come up with a “cocktail” that is fighting whatever caused this and is providing nourishment and vitamins. The last CT scan and other tests have shown that the “cocktail” is working. On Friday, he was moved to a diet of Jell-O, broth, and juices. Yesterday he was served Cream of Wheat for breakfast. These are baby steps but they are all going in the right direction.

As for me, I am staying busy. Not happy that I can’t go to the hospital every day but we do talk on the telephone several times a day. The kids are making sure I have food to eat 🙂 It does get lonely without him to talk to every evening, discussing our days, politics and just the general stuff. The dogs are very confused and still wait for him to come in the door each evening. Hopefully he will soon. Thank you for the continued prayers.

Happy Sunday Everyone!

It has been a stressful and frustrating week in the Caswell household. Tuesday Mr. Dollycas was a work (about an hour from home) and was experiencing severe stomach pain. He decided about 1 p.m. to come home. He was only a short way from work when he decided he needed to go to the emergency room and drove to one nearby. About 90 minutes later he called me, “I’m sorry, I am in the ER at the hospital” and he hangs up. I had not spoken to him at all the day so I had no idea what was happening or which hospital he could be at. So I started calling the ones nearby first. On the 5th call I found him but they said he couldn’t talk and a nurse would call me.

Unable to drive. I started calling our kids. Daughter #1 was at the dentist with grandson #1 and said she would head to the hospital as soon as she got “the kid” out of the dentist chair. Son #2 was at work but texted right back he would head to the hospital right away. He was the closest and could be there in 30 minutes. Daughter #2 works at a job where she can not be called so I Facebook messaged her and texted her cell phone telling her to call home. And me, unable to go there, had to sit here and wait.

When Daughter #1 arrived at the hospital, my son came home to get me with news they were admitting dad and that the CT Scan has shown an inflamed pancreas. Right before we left to go back to the hospital, Daughter #2 checked in. I told her to stay at work until we knew more.

When I arrived to the hospital they were giving him fluids and trying different pain medications but nothing seemed to be working. After about an hour both he and his nurse encouraged us to go home saying he may rest better without company.

The next day he was still the same and told me to stay home. I had planned to go see him on Thursday but he was going to be having tests all day but he was able to talk on the phone with me a few times. Still in so much pain. Friday he had another CT scan and talked to a surgeon. No surgery needed at this time but because of other tests they could finally start him on antibiotics.

Yesterday Daughter #2 and I went to see him and met with one of his doctors. He is still in a lot of pain and the doctor explained treatment could take weeks. This has left me so scared. My husband is my caregiver, my rock. I hope you will keep him in your prayers.  Thank you.

We had a fun Saturday catching up with family and celebrating our great nephew’s 5th Birthday. He received a new bike, trucks and cars but the squirt gun was a huge hit and the reason no group pictures were taken. 🙂 Time together is always too short but we made plans to meet again on July 4th. Meanwhile my effort to smile more sure is easy when surrounded by all the wee ones!

Today will be spent watching the NASCAR race and relaxing after I get my blog/tour work done.

BRAT FEST

I had a fabulous day yesterday. A whole day away from my computer. We headed to Madison for the World’s Largest Brat Fest. As of last night 100,000 brats had been sold. Mr. Dollycas, daughter #2 and I were soon joined by daughter #1 and her family. Son #2 arrived with his friends a little while later. Besides the brats the highlights of the day including getting up close and personal with some Clydesdales and meeting Bucky Badger. The kids enjoyed Laser Tag and the carnival. Plenty of yummy food and drink was everywhere, funnel cakes, roasted corn on the cob, lemonade, ice cream and so much more. Music was also a huge highlight but the kids and us old people were ready to head home before the main acts played. Fun was had by all and we hope to return next year. The event is for a good cause, proceeds are shared by several local charities. My only complaint was that the park needs to be much more handicap accessible and needs to add more benches for resting. 🙂

Last Sunday was not only Mother’s Day but our 34th Wedding Anniversary. My sister and I are big fans of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth. There has been a museum/store in his hometown of Cambridge, Wisconsin for years that his sister Kelly manages. Fans recently received notice that the place would be closing June 11 and that all the trophies, cars,, helmets, etc. would be moved to North Carolina where Matt now lives. We had never been there even though it is not that far away. We decided to visit there last Sunday and took my sister along. We had such fun. The place is jam packed with everything from his career thus far in racing. Both Matt and Kelly have said he is not retiring but rumors are always running rampant. My biggest hope is to meet him in person someday.
