Southerners keep their secrets swept under the rug, but what happens when that rug goes up for sale?

Bestselling author Berlye Stone, the most famous citizen to ever come out of Cottonwood, Kentucky, has died and put all her worldly possessions up for auction, but not without leaving one more manuscript behind. A hidden tell-all about Cottonwood that’s got more gossip than a ladies’ luncheon.

When Beryle’s assistant turns up with an ax in her back and the only witness is in a coma, Sheriff Kenni Lowry reckons someone in town will do anything to keep the manuscript from seeing the light of day. Her poppa’s ghost returns to help piece together the life of the Beryle he once knew, but his memory’s a little foggy, and any misstep could cause them a world of trouble. With the help of Deputy Finn Vincent, can Kenni sort through the secrets buried in Beryle’s books, or will this be her final chapter?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Another fun, entertaining, crazy, cozy from Tonya Kappes. If you are not smiling and laughing when you are reading this story there is something wrong.

Cottonwood, Kentucky is mourning the loss of bestselling author Berlye Stone, their most famous resident. Then Berlye’s assistant is found with an ax in her back. Seems there is a tell all manuscript somewhere and that may have lead to the assistant’s death.  Sheriff Kenni Lowry with a little help from her Poppa and Deputy Finn Vincent, is determined to find both the book and killer before someone axes her into the great beyond right along with her Poppa.

There was so much I loved about this story.

The characters are so strong and cleverly written. Kenni is such a strong protagonist. She is a darn good sheriff handling verything from neighborly disputes to murder. Her mother is an absolute hoot and a half, she is always deeply involved in one cause or another and right now she is campaigning for her daughters reelection. Kenni’s Poppa’s ghost returns just when she needs him, sometimes even before she knows she needs him. They relationship is so strong and heartwarming. It is funny too because only Kenni and her dog Duke can see the ghost. She sometimes forgets that and needs to quickly explain who the heck she is talking to. Deputy Finn Vincent is starting to put down roots in Cottonwood and that bodes very well for a real relationship with Kenni. The tricky part is, she is his boss, so going forward this will be quite interesting.

I really enjoyed the storyline too. An author, who is a bit of a recluse dies and everyone in town seems to be anxious and even afraid of what could be in this tell all book. Kenni learns that the characters in most of the steamy romance books she has written in the past have been based on residents from Cottonwood. This opens wide the list of suspects. She has never read any of the stories but she knows someone who has and that gives her clues to move her investigation forward. Small towns, you have to love them and there is no small town better than Cottonwood for a fantastic cozy mystery.

Southern charm, small town gossip, unique characters and a quality mystery you can stick your teeth into, Ax to Grind is a must read. It can be read all on its own but you really should start at the beginning and get introduced to Cottonwood  and the folks that live there properly. Have you ordered you copy yet? What are you waiting for? 🙂

Southern Fried (A Kenni Lowry Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – Kentucky
Henery Press (April 4, 2017)
Paperback: 252 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635111873
Kindle ASIN: B01N212SJ8

In the South, it’s better when the food is fried and the secrets kept buried…

After the dead body of a beloved Cottonwood resident is found tangled up in an electric fence, Sheriff Kenni Lowry has a hunch that somethin’ ain’t right. Her investigation heats up with a fierce cook-off competition, a euchre game where the intel is sweeter than the brownies, and a decades old family recipe that may just be the proof in the pudding.

The icing on the cake: Kenni is fighting an attraction to her recently sworn-in deputy sheriff, and election season is hot on her tail. When the killer comes after who she holds most dear, even her poppa’s ghostly guidance might not be enough to keep her and her own out of the frying pan.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is my second trip to Cottonwood and not much has changed. Sheriff Kenni Lowry is still trying to prove she can do her job even to her own mother. When another dead body is found some of the residents blame her for the surge in crime and a retired officer throws his hat into the ring to run against her in the next election. This doesn’t sit well with Poppa, her grandfather, the former sheriff, a ghost, that strives to help her protect the community. Time to use a little Southern wit and charm at a few local events to try to move her investigation along. A cook-off competition seems to connect her suspects but knowing this town it could be any little thing that caused one of the residents to turn on one of their own.

I knew when I loaded this book onto my Kindle it was going to put a smile on my face and it did. The story opens with Kenni and Finn on a Ferris wheel and I am thinking their relationship is about to take a big step but then they receive a call for assistance and the moment is totally lost. When the sheriff arrives at Petal Pusher’s Landscaping with her ghostly sidekick they find Owen Godbey dead in the greenhouse, face down in the owner’s prize tomatoes.  Myrna Savage, the owner seems more concerned about the smashed fruit than she is a dead employee. Soon the investigation takes off and a certain amount of hilarity ensues.

These characters are a pure treasure. Kenni’s relationship with her grandfather warms my heart and the man had me laughing out loud more than once. Finn and Kenni work well together and would probably play well together too as soon as they sort out a couple of things. The residents of Cottonwood are an eclectic group, full of p&v as my grandmother used to say. We saw that you don’t want to mess with Kenni’s mama. It is okay if she tries to talk Kenni out of being Sheriff, but no one else had better say Kenni isn’t fit for the job. Talk about a turn around.

The murder mystery seems to revolve around a cookbook. Everyone is trying to find it because it contains a very important secret, something about okra.  There are several twists and turns and I started to put things together a little quicker than Kenni, but not by much. I found the plot to be very clever and entertaining.

If you like your cozies with a bit of Southern sass and charm then this is the perfect story for you. It is sure to tickle your funny bone too.

Synopsis

Sheriff Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in her small town in Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but quickly discovers her grandfather’s ghost, who happened to be the town’s retired sheriff, has been scaring off any would be crime. Poppa has come back from the great beyond to be Kenni’s deputy after the beloved town doctor is found murdered.

Ghost or no ghost, time is of the essence. After all, re-election isn’t far away and Kenni doesn’t want to look for a new job anytime soon.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
This story remind me a bit of J.J. Cook’s Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries and Sharon Pape’s Portrait of Crime Mysteries. Sheriff Kenni Lowry has been sheriff in Cottonwood, Kentucky since she was elected to fill her grandfather’s seat after he passed away. She learned that since she took over his ghost has been scaring criminals away so there was virtually no crime in the town at all. When the doctor that has taken care of the town forever is murdered, the ghost makes himself known to help her solve the case and grow her confidence.

I hear you strict cozy fans saying a sheriff is not an amateur sleuth, but in this case, this is her first homicide and she is a bit out of her depth. Cottonwood is a small town with a super small police force, think, Andy Griffith in Mayberry. She does bring in some experience in Finn Vincent for the Kentucky Reserve. Many in the town and even Kenni’s own mother think she is basically playing a game being sheriff. She needs to prove she is up to the job.

Kenni Lowry is smart and fun and knows how things work in her small town, like the gossip mill. She also know how to handle the varied personalities of the residents. I am sure she will be more confident in the next story. Poppa, her grandfather, must have been a wonderful man when he was alive and still is in his ghostly form. They relationship is so strong and loving. I really liked Finn. Together the 3 of them make a great Crime solving team. Kenni and Finn may make a great team in another way too.

Tonya Kappes have filled her story with the requisite quirky characters and wonderful Southern charm with plenty of humor. The mystery plot contains many twists and turns. I did have a theory of who was responsible for the recent crime wave and this time I was actually right. 🙂

This series is off to a wonderful start.

enjoyable 2016

Synopsis

A funeral, a ghost, a murder . . . It’s all in a day’s work for emma lee raines . . .

Bopped on the head from a falling plastic Santa, local undertaker Emma Lee Raines is told she’s suffering from “funeral trauma.” It’s trauma all right, because the not-so-dearly departed keep talking to her. Take Ruthie Sue Payne—innkeeper, gossip queen, and arch-nemesis of Emma Lee’s granny—she’s adamant that she didn’t just fall down those stairs. She was pushed.

Ruthie has no idea who wanted her pushing up daisies. All she knows is that she can’t cross over until the matter is laid to eternal rest. In the land of the living, Emma Lee’s high-school crush, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, isn’t ready to rule out foul play. Granny Raines, the widow of Ruthie’s ex-husband and co-owner of the Sleepy Hollow Inn, is the prime suspect. Now Emma Lee is stuck playing detective or risk being haunted forever.
