Mandy and Rob have booked an off-season rafting and climbing trip in Utah’s remote Canyonlands. Gonzo and Kendra come along and their hire “Cool” as their climbing expert. When they wake up one morning and find one of their clients has been killed in a bear attack, no one else heard, they know there is more to the story. With no way to contact anyone for help they realize they must continue the trip even though they may be traveling with a killer.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Wow, I continue to be amazed with every one of these RM Outdoor Adventure Mysteries! Beth Groundwater just takes us on one wild ride after another!
In Fatal Descent we leave Colorado behind and travel to Utah to the Cataract Canyon and the Big Drops. Mandy and the gang have a group that contains basically novices when it comes to whitewater rafting and having the patience of saints take them on this fantastic trip. Of course, there is a murder and at least one killer in the group. So if they survive what Mother Nature throws at them they still have to survive the people they are traveling with for the next 4 days.
The clients include a family off on what may be there last adventure together, 3 ladies that plan a special adventure trip together once a year without the hubbies, and a divorced couple with their daughter who just cannot accept her parent’s marriage is over. All their different stories create compelling subplots to the mystery.
Beth writes what she knows and she describes everything from the rapids to the beautiful sandstone cliffs in such a way you almost feel like you are right there in the raft careening down the Colorado/Green river hanging on tight and loving every minute of it.
This is definitely a thrilling read that had the pages flying fast. One helluva of an adventure and I loved it!!!

Looks like a good book in a great setting! I am familiar with the basket books, but not this series, thanks for the heads up!
You are welcome!
Sounds like it’s more than a cozy. Dee
It is. She writes a thrilling mystery! But keeps it cozy!
Love southern Utah – can’t wait to read….’
Alicia,
I was surprised to see it set in Utah and thrilled because I filled another spot on my Where Are You Reading map 🙂
Wow—this sounds GREAT; I would love to read it—thanks for the opportunity to win a copy!
Sheila, it is so good!
I have not yet read any of this series by Beth Groundwater, but with such glowing reviews, I plan on ordering her book/books this week. Love adventure since I cannot participate in sports and recreational activities anymore like she writes about, so it is my way to have an adventure sitting at home in a comfy chair. Fatal Decent intrigues me as we have been to Utah and seen that area she writes about, so that makes the book seem all the more personal. I am sure I am going to love it.
Keep up the great writing Beth. Love Dollycas too. I always find out something interesting.
Thanks Cynthia! You will not be disappointed!
Thanks for your comments, everyone! Dee, this series is categorized as soft-boiled, one step edgier than cozy, but still without the “icky stuff” you’ll find in medium-boiled, hard-boiled, or noir series. Alicial, I agree that southern Utah is a beautiful place, with wonderful scenic parks like Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce, and Zion. Cynthia, like you, I tell readers that with this series, they can ride the whitewater waves from the safety and comfort of their easy chair. I hope you all love reading FATAL DESCENT!
Need to read Fatal Descent since I read the other books in the series. Hope I can win this contest!
Would love to win a copy of Fatal descent! I’ve read your gift basket series and thoroughly enjoyed the first two. I see that the third is due out November. Hooray! I know I’ll enjoy it, too. The RM Outdoor Adventures Mystery series sound great esp since I enjoying camping and exploring ou state parks here in Texas!
