Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
Are you ready to take a trip to Key West?

On Houseboat Row by Lucy Burdette
Because the theme of this blog is “escaping” to read, I thought you might be interested in hearing—and seeing—more about where food critic Hayley Snow lives. She shares a houseboat on Houseboat Row with her octagenarian roommate, Miss Gloria.
Even though the characters and story in KILLER TAKEOUT
are fictional, Houseboat Row really exists! Although this hodgepodge collection of boats sits on a busy corner (Palm Avenue and S. Roosevelt Blvd. for those who know Key West), once you step off the parking lot and onto the docks, the weight of the the world slides off your back. I imagine Hayley and Miss Gloria living on a little yellow one-story boat, with two bedrooms, a living area, and a galley kitchen. At the far end of the boat is a small deck where Miss Gloria grows tomatoes and herbs. At the other end, the deck is larger, big enough for a dining table and some chairs to lounge in and watch the world go by.
Many a dinner party has been thrown on the deck over the course of the series, and KILLER TAKEOUT
is no exception. In fact, since the book takes place during the crazy, hectic Fantasy Fest week, Hayley and Miss Gloria retreat to their boat frequently, often joined by family and friends.
We all hope you’ll enjoy your seventh visit to Key West and even imagine yourself as one of the neighbors…

It’s Fantasy Fest at Key West, and food critic Hayley Snow is ready to celebrate. But a killer seems intent on crashing the party. . .
Every year, Key West’s weeklong Mardi Gras–style festival has tourists and locals alike lining up for costumed revelry and delicious eats. Key Zest magazine has assigned Hayley to write a piece on the fest’s grab-and-go food, so she’s planning on hitting up the mobile eateries while checking out the party preparations.
Hayley’s office mate, Danielle, recently elected Queen of Fantasy Fest, is also buzzing between festivities and fundraisers. But when a former royal rival gets taken out, Hayley needs to put down her party hat and her pen and figure out who served up a side of murder—before Danielle gets crowned a killer. . .
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Zombies, a hurricane, and murder! OH MY!! This story is “KILLER”!!!
Never a dull moment in Key West, but Halloween seems extra special. The week plus long event, Fantasy Fest, includes great food and drink, several events each day and costumes that are fun, scary, and some downright risqué. Hayley Snow is right in the middle of it all. She is reviewing places that serve takeout for Key Zest. Everything from food trucks to restaurants. She is also covering and participating in several events.
Her coworker Danielle was elected Queen of Fantasy Fest after weeks of fundraising but she seems to have made an enemy. Another contestant is not taking her loss well and making Danielle miserable.
Hayley dons makeup to zombify herself and takes part in the Zombie Bicycle Ride. Alcohol, costume restraints, or lack of balance has zombies tumbling everywhere. One right by Hayley so she stops to help. It takes awhile but she realizes it is the woman that has been bullying Danielle. When she dies police think there may have been foul play and Danielle is their main suspect. Hayley quickly starts her own investigation.
Oh and in addition to that and work, her mother has arrived in Key West with her fiancé for their wedding, and Hurricane Margaret is brewing and Key West is in it’s path.
Lucy Burdette has filled these pages full. What a fantastic story!
All our favorite characters are back and Key West is full of tourists too. I absolutely love Miss Gloria. She is over 80 and Hayley has a hard time keeping up with her. Hayley and Bransford’s romance has some bumps and there is some trouble at Key Zest, I really enjoyed all the dialogue. The characters continue to grow and even after 7 stories they are fresh and interesting. I would love to be friends with all of them.
The subplots entwine so comfortably with the main plot. Don’t interpret that to mean there is not excitement because there is plenty of that. I couldn’t believe how quickly I flew through this book. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. It was after midnight and I kept telling myself just one more chapter, just one more chapter, and soon I was to the recipes.
Don’t miss this one! Pack your virtual bags and head to Key West and enjoy!! Be sure to send me a postcard (comment) telling me all about your trip!!

It sounds like fun to live on a houseboat. You’d have to live small, which sounds good to me. And, you’d have fewer neighbors, too. I’d love to read this book. It sounds terrific.
