Kate Carlisle: How to Reward Readers
(Guest Post provided by publicist.)
Kate Carlisle is the bestselling author of the Bibliophile Mysteries and the Fixer-Upper Mysteries (as seen on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries). Her latest Bibliophile Mystery—Once upon a Spine—is a must-read for mystery readers who love books about books. RT Book Reviews calls Once upon a Spine “Truly laugh-out-loud hysterical… a great tale of who didn’t do it!” Read Chapters 1 and 2 free at KateCarlisle.com.
I am so very grateful to the readers who buy my books that I’m always looking for ways to reward them. Like many authors, I hold lots of giveaways for members of my mailing list, but the problem with giveaways is that only a limited number of readers win. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great, and I’ll continue to hold them. (Right now, I’m holding 30 days of giveaways, with one winner every day winning a limited edition deck of ONCE UPON A SPINE playing cards. Every face card is holding a murder weapon! How fun is that? You can enter in the Secret Room at KateCarlisle.com.)
But I want to do more. I want to reward every reader who loves my books, not just a few lucky winners. Here are a few of the ways I do just that:
FREE BOOKMARKS, BOOKPLATES, AND MAPS OF MY FICTIONAL TOWNS
Every member of my mailing list gets access to the Secret Room at KateCarlisle.com, where you’ll find details on how to send in for a free bookmark, autographed bookplate, or full-color map of the fictional towns in my books. The map of Dharma, the California commune where bookbinder Brooklyn Wainwright was raised, is really charming.
Mystery readers and puzzles just go together! So for every Bibliophile Mystery, my team creates a 12 Changes puzzle—can you find 12 changes in the cover of ONCE UPON A SPINE? (If this image is too small for you to see, you can download a PDF in the Secret Room at KateCarlisle.com. You’ll also find word search puzzles there, if you prefer word games.)
As a gift to every reader who buys ONCE UPON A SPINE, I’ve included some fun naughty appetizer recipes in the book, with names like Perky Breast Nibbles and Hot Buttered Rump Bites. They come directly from a scene in the book that made me giggle like a schoolgirl. Brooklyn’s mom is incorrigible, and this time, she has an accomplice!
I’d like to hear from you. What are some of your favorite rewards from authors you follow? What goodies get you excited as a reader?
~Kate

San Francisco bookbinder Brooklyn Wainwright stumbles through the looking glass in a tale of murder, rare books, and a quest for the perfect pie…
Brooklyn’s oh-so-proper future in-laws are traveling from England to meet her, and if that’s not enough to set her on edge, rumors abound that the charming Courtyard Shops across the street may be replaced by high-rise apartments. Their trendy neighborhood will be ruined unless Brooklyn and her fiancé Derek Stone can persuade the shopkeepers not to sell.
But with a rare edition of Alice in Wonderland causing bad blood at the Brothers Bookshop and a string of petty vandalism making everyone nervous, Brooklyn and Derek feel like they’re attempting six impossible things before breakfast. Then the owner of The Rabbit Hole juice bar is felled by his own heavy shelves, and the local cobbler lies dead beside him. An accident . . . or something more sinister? Things get curiouser and curiouser when a second priceless copy of Alice is discovered. Will it stir up more trouble within the close-knit community?
As the Brits descend, Brooklyn learns they’re not so stuffy, after all. Derek’s dad is won over with chocolate cream pie, and his psychic mum would kill to help Brooklyn solve this murder—before another victim takes a tumble.

love, love, love this series and I can’t get enough!!
Love Kate’s books. Sounds like another winner.
I have not read any of Kate Carlisle’s Bibliophile Mysteries, but am anxious to start!
I love this series and can’t wait to read the book!
This is a fun series. I like the maps of the fictional towns–they help me visualize the action.
Looks like a fun book! –But I frown upon cats on tea tables!
Really enjoy this series. Can’t wait to read “Once Upon A Spine”.
Love this series. Just finished playing catch up so I’m ready to dive into Once Upon a Spine. Should be interesting and funny when the parents meet.
I have not read any of your books, but this looks like a great one to start with. I love the idea of puzzles and brain twisters also. Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy!
Kate Carlisle has got to be the most creative author of the year! Even though I didn’t win a deck of those super awesome cards, I had a good time checking in each day to see who won and how they would be picked. I can’t wait to see what she does next! Kate is a new author to me and judging by her creativity, she is going to be a favorite! I am planning out adding her books, (I hate book budgeting but it is life), and am eagerly waiting to get started. Winning the book would be super awesome. If not, I’ll still be getting it. Whoever wins will be entertained, for sure.
I’m also new to your blog, too. I’m loving it! I’m so happy I found it. Great job!
One of my favorite cozy authors!
Lovely cover. It has this relaxing feel to it.
Looking forward to reading this book. Thankyou for the opportunity!
Really enjoy this series and her other one too. Both of the maps are a great bonus.
Love this series; I’ve read every one!
Free book is my favorite reward from authors! 🙂 Bookmarks too.
I love the map of Dharma & use it all the time while reading scenes that are set in the town.
