When Professor Molly attends Mahina State University’s exclusive donor dinner, she doesn’t expect to have to share a table with the insufferable Stephen Park. Turns out it’s one thing to invite your toxic ex-boyfriend to drop dead…it’s quite another when he takes you up on it.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
It’s just a university donor dinner held in an old hospital . . . what could go wrong?
The university is taking over the hospital property and refurbishing the buildings for offices, labs and meeting areas. Just between you and me, I don’t think it is ASA compliant. Even Molly’s hubby says it reminds him a little bit of a horror movie.
It is Donnie and Molly’s first time out without their baby Francesca and she was looking forward to it until she learns they were seated at a table with Stephen Park, a man she dated very briefly and he has been a thorn in her side ever since. Also seated at the table is Bee Corcoran, a kinesiology professor who has been giving unwanted advice about exercising, healthy diets, and losing weight to Molly ever since the birth of her child.
Sadly, the others that were supposed to be seated at the table have begged off from the event. So it is just the four of them in this very uncomfortable situation. It is no wonder they are doing anything that will get them away from the table, Donnie to check in with the sitter, Stephen to have a cigarette, Molly to the ladies room. Unfortunately, Molly takes a long route back to the table just in time to hear Stephen fall to his death behind her. This is not going to be good. Both she and Donnie were away from the table, If Stephen was pushed to his death they are going to be the prime suspects.
Department head and new mom Molly has her hands full even during summer break. Thankfully she has a student from the college to help at home with the house and the baby because she has to follow very clue to prove her husband had nothing to do with Stephen Park’s demise. Her partner in crime and best friend Emma is around to help her sleuth or pour the wine or both depending on the situation. All of the characters in this story are fleshed out and unique.
The story set a nice pace from the start and the plot took several turns before the real killer came into focus. The author includes the perfect amount of humor and throws in bits of the Hawaiian language here and there and I really like that.
Stories set in Hawaii always get me dreaming. I so want to vacation there someday. The old hospital/new college digs will not be on my list of places to visit though. I understand the university wanting to show their patrons the new property they acquired, but the place was clearly unsafe for a gala of this kind, even if someone didn’t have murder on their mind.
Frankie Bow has filled these pages with plenty of drama. Drama that will have you flipping those pages quickly from beginning to end. I really enjoyed catching up with Professor Molly.

About the Author
Like Professor Molly, Frankie Bow teaches at a public university. Unlike her protagonist, she is blessed with delightful students, sane colleagues, and a perfectly nice office chair. She believes if life isn’t fair, at least it can be entertaining. In addition to writing murder mysteries, she publishes in scholarly journals under her real name. Her experience with academic publishing has taught her to take nothing personally.

The characters are diverse and interesting, each with his/her own personalities, including Stephen and his date, Bee. Not to mention Molly’s best friend and partner-in-crime, Emma.
