Nothing disrupts a celebration quite like an uninvited corpse.
Adina already knows the city can be a dangerous place. That’s why she’s looking forward to a stress-free weekend in rural Pennsylvania with her favorite detective. Maybe not all that stress-free. They are attending an engagement party and Adina will be meeting Jonathan’s family for the first time.
Except the holiday weekend takes a deadly turn when leading industrialists, a hard-core environmentalist, and a bevy of wealthy partygoers converge on the Riverfront Lodge, and the couple stumbles upon yet another dead body. Drawn into the ensuing investigation, making a good impression on Jonathan’s parents is the least of her worries.
A standalone novella, Dead amid the Dogwoods is the fifth mystery in the Adina Donati, Accidental Sleuth Series.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Adina and Jonathan leave the fast pace of D.C. behind for an engagement party for his brother and bride to be in rural Pennsylvania. But even with a trip to Hershey Park and the party they still have time to find a body and get mixed up in the investigation.
I am so happy that Adina and Jonathan finally got some alone time and that she was able to meet his family and that they welcomed her with open arms. They could quickly see that she was a strong, smart woman and the perfect partner for their son/brother. Again, the main characters were surrounded by unique characters that developed quickly before our eyes.
The mystery was so interesting because there were two big events at the venue where the murder occurred and people at both events had a variety of connections, misdeeds, and secrets. Jonathan was reluctantly asked to assist on the case because of his background in solving homicides which allowed him to sit in on some of the interviews with suspects. He did not sit on the one with his brother’s future father-in-law though. Adina found herself in the right places at the right time to do a little sleuthing too. But it would be one key piece of evidence that would reveal the killer.
I loved that the family took a little side trip to Hershey. We had a family vacation run through there several years ago so it was very easy for me to understand the variety and plentiful purchases made at the gift shop. It truly is a great place to visit for all ages. I would love to take my grandchildren there someday. I will pass on the bit of trouble these characters ran into there, but it did allow for another trip to the gift shop.
Dead Amid the Dogwoods has a wonderful balance between mystery and family. A quick read, I enjoyed every page. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see what Ms. Salem has in store for her characters next.
