Murder, She Wrote: Killer on the Court
by Jessica Fletcher & Terrie Farley Moran
I am excited to welcome Terrie Farley Moran
to Escape With Dollycas today!
Hi Terrie,
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi Lori, it is great to be here. I am a lifelong New Yorker and very happy to be a grandmother. Writing is my third career and so far it is the most fun of the three.
What is the best thing about taking over writing such a long-running popular series?
Well, I have been a fan of Murder, She Wrote since the first episode of the show appeared on television in September 1984. I also began to read the books when the first one was published in, I think, 1989. So the absolute best thing for me is that I am hanging out with my long time friend Jessica Fletcher and many of her friends as well.
What is the worst thing about taking over the writing of such a long-running popular series?
The television series filmed more than two hundred fifty episodes between 1984 and 1996. And as I mentioned the books began sometime around 1989 and have been written by two previous authors. They were never considered to be a continuation of the television series since, for many years, they were released while the show was still on the air. Naturally, over this length of time there have been character changes. I thought Mayor Sam Booth and his dog Winston were wonderfully entertaining characters in the television show, but by the time I began writing the books, the Mayor is now a man named Jim Shevlin. And somewhere along the line Sheriff Mort Metzger and Adele got divorced and he has remarried a vivacious redhead named Maureen. Keeping up with the changes that came along over nearly forty years remains a challenge.
Do you have a special place you like to write?
I write at a computer in a small home office but I edit in the living room, relaxing in my recliner. Having said that, I also write in doctor’s waiting rooms, airports, hotels, and even in my car. I always have work with me and will write pretty much anywhere if I am required to sit for more than a few minutes.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not writing or on a deadline?
I generally do some writing related work every day: research, writing, editing, publicity, cleaning my workspace, etc. But as long as a deadline doesn’t loom, I like to spend time with any or all of my grandchildren. As you know, that is the best fun ever!!
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
The Island of Ireland! All of my ancestors came to America from various counties in Ireland. They met and married other Irish immigrants here in New York which led to my grandparents, my parents, and ultimately me. The first time I visited Ireland it felt exactly like coming home so in 2017 I fulfilled my most cherished dream and traveled to Ireland with my children and grandchildren.
What is next on the horizon for you?
Your last question is a great lead-in to my answer to this question. I am finishing up a book in which Jessica Fletcher travels to Northern Ireland. Jessica spends some time in Belfast City and in the village of Bushmills. In her travels she visits the Titanic Museum, Ballycastle, Fairhead, Giant’s Causeway and other lovely places but, of course, there is a murder!! I am delighted that Murder, She Wrote, Death on the Emerald Isle will be released on January 3, 2023.
Thank you for visiting today and taking the time to answer my questions.
It was totally my pleasure. Dollycas tours are always such fun.

Jessica Fletcher’s sunny beach vacation with her nephew’s family takes a dark turn in this new installment in the USA Today bestselling series.
Jessica is delighted when her nephew Grady invites her to spend a few days with his family in an oceanside New York bungalow. She packs her bags and heads down to the city, ready to spend some quality time with Grady, his wife, Donna, and their young son, Frank.
But the morning after Jessica’s arrival, Donna finds her boss dead on a tennis court, and Jessica’s dreams of a relaxing visit are quashed. Everyone in the small beachside community is a suspect, and the local authorities—headed by an old colleague of Cabot Cove sheriff Mort Metzger—have asked that no one leave town. Will Jessica be able to find a killer and salvage the rest of her trip?
