The Chamomile Conspiracy: A Garden Lover Cozy Mystery (Seasons of the Witch)
by Louise Marvin
Ugh, okay. My name is Pax, and I’m from Boston. Technically, I’m from Honesty Harbor, in Maine, but when my parents died I moved to Massachusetts with my dad’s parents. They were, for lack of a better word, meh.
(What? I mean no disrespect—that’s a lie, I mean all the disrespect. But we’re getting off track, here.)
Anyway, long story short: I’m a witch and I can talk to plants. It’s a weird mix of telepathy and actually speaking out loud. I’ve never really thought about the mechanics of it. I can just do it. So many plants have been some of my best friends for my entire life.
One bonus to having plants for friends is that they are excellent gossips. Ferns are chatterboxes about literally everything that happens, where roses memorize every scrap of romantic drama they come across. Sunflowers are cheerful, violets are very observant, and if you ever need directions, ask the lilacs.
Meanwhile, trees like to pretend they’re above it all but since they can see pretty much all over the neighborhood and into windows, they’re the best source for real drama. If you want to know who’s canoodling with whom, ask the trees. Pine trees are a little reticent but maple trees? They will tell you everything, and they leave out no details.
(Be nice to the trees. Just sayin’.)
So, it’s officially Spooky Season now—Sam sent me the dancing pumpkin-head guy GIF—which means it’s time to hit Michael’s and Joann’s. If your house doesn’t look like a Spirit Halloween by October 2nd, what are you even doing with your life? Anyway, Halloween is the best time to introduce a creepy new friend to your home, so here’s a little list of good, spooky plants to include in your Halloween décor.
(Make sure you thoroughly research each plant before you bring one home, especially if you have pets and/or kids!)
- Alkekengi officinarum, or the Chinese lantern. They look like little mini-pumpkins on the vine!
- Tacca chantrieri, or the bat flower. I mean, exactly as it says on the tin, it looks like a bat, and it’s a flower.
- Celosia cristata, or the cockscomb. Scarlet, blood red, and looks like an exposed brain. What’s not to love?
- Viola x wittrockiana, or black pansies. A bunch of these guys and some Tagetes (marigolds) and you’re color-coordinated!
- Hydnellum peckii, the devil’s tooth fungus. A white fungus that appears to bleed bright red liquid. Might be a bit difficult to come by but easily recreated with marshmallows and red food coloring (you don’t want to tangle with the fungi anyway—weird bunch, kinda sus).
Happy Autumn and happy Hallowe’en, my friends!
—Pax
(PS: The violets wanted you to know they like your hair.)

Green witch Pax Thatcher leads a busy life. Between working two jobs, applying to grad school, and helping out at the old herb shop that belongs to her friend and mentor, Miss Millie, Pax doesn’t have much time for practicing spells. She’s lucky she can keep her enormous plant collection alive.
Fortunately, she can talk to her plants, and they talk back.
But when Pax arrives for a visit to her seaside hometown of Honesty Harbor, Maine, and discovers Miss Millie is missing, she drops everything to find her. When she does, it’s just in time to hear Miss Millie’s dying words:
Poison. Find them.
Unable to believe anyone would want to murder the kind old woman, Pax vows to fulfill Miss Millie’s last request. But how can a boring little witch who doesn’t even own a cauldron solve a murder? Ask the only witness—a potted plant—what happened.
But the more she listens to her leafy allies, the more questions she has. And when others begin to view her as the prime suspect, Pax must hurry to weed out the killer before someone else gets whacked.

There were a lot of things I liked about this first Garden Lover Cozy Mystery. THE CHAMOMILE CONSPIRACY is a unique mystery that brings new friends together while honoring a mentor. Plant facts spread throughout were fun and interesting addition.
