I love all cozy mystery books! I adore the spunky, inexperienced, flawed-but-loveable main characters and quirky, fun supporting casts. I enjoy the small-town settings. I have fun dissecting the mystery, without having to read any disturbing details of the actual murder. I appreciate that the world-building and the character development is as important to the story as the mystery itself. I can lose myself in these stories and enjoy the trip. And I know that there’s always a happy ending waiting for me.
My favorite type of cozy mystery books to read – and write – are those of the paranormal variety. In addition to all that cozy mysteries have to offer, there are some special attributes that draw me to the magical versions of this genre.
Anything can happen – and I mean anything!
Cozies with paranormal characters and settings are not limited to real world scenarios or the rules of mere earthly beings. There are no boundaries to what can happen. When witches, fairies, shifters, vampires, or ghosts are involved, the possibility of what can happen next is unlimited. It always keeps me guessing.
Imperfect main characters have unusual magical abilities.
I love it when people who seem normal discover that they have magical abilities. How amazing would it be to find out that you can shapeshift into a wolf, or clean your house with the flick of a wrist? Traveling along with this imperfect human who blossoms with magical enhancements in their life is a world of fun.
Slow burn romances that cross the line of species.
A match between a fairy, a vampire, or a werewolf and a human? Why not! Especially those in cozies who are strong, brave, and magically capable! This isn’t something you’ll find on your usual dating website.
Animals with attitude – and the voices to match.
Cats, dogs, horses, and miniature pigs with quirky personalities and complete loyalty to their humans? Sign me up! It’s a blast to imagine how your own cat, dog, or bird might sound if they had a voice. The personalities of these critters usually add a humorous touch to these books, since they lend themselves to be lighthearted characters that brighten up any story.
There you have it! Paranormal cozy mystery books open up a whole new world of fun and adventure, and that’s why I love them.

It’s a magical book club! When this group chooses a book, magic happens. The mystery comes to life, and they find themselves part of the story. To exit the book and get back home, they need to solve the mystery and reach The End.
This time, the club chooses a book called The Great Cake Rivalry, because, well … cake! They read the back cover and it’s unanimous. So off they go into another grand adventure into a town aptly named Frosting.
Frosting is a rural town in an idyllic setting. The people live quiet lives most of the year. But in the spring, things change. The Annual Cake Competition becomes the focus of every man, woman, and child. They take this competition seriously. The cakes are spectacular. The festival is fabulous. For a week there are contests featuring all kinds of cakes. The people of the community become official tasters and vote for the winning cakes in each category.
The grand finale is a display of finely decorated cakes, made by the town’s bakeries. The winner of the best design receives a prize package that would make any baker dizzy.
Sadly, this event has been tainted. Once a year, each one different, but all somehow related to this event, a person is murdered. The main investigator is stumped, but that could be because he’s an inept buffoon.
Can the book club help the people of this community figure out who is causing this disturbing pattern of deaths, and stop another murder from happening? Can they figure out why some of the citizens dress so oddly, and why they always wear those unique backpacks? All while they fill themselves to the brim with cake, of course.
