Passport to Spy: A Kat Lawson Mystery
by Nancy Cole Silverman
I am happy to welcome protagonist Kat Lawson
to Escapes With Dollycas today!
I never knew how much I would enjoy working as a travel correspondent until the FBI approached me and offered me a PASSPORT TO SPY, or more specifically, a job to work undercover as a European feature writer. My name is Kat Lawson, and to be honest, when I accepted their offer, I had no idea what I was getting into. The assignment seemed easy enough, and the perks were even better. All expenses paid; food, hotels, travel. What more could I want? All I had to do was visit exciting and unusual sights, take pictures, write about what I had seen, and report to my publisher/FBI handler on those I was secretly assigned to observe. At no point did anyone tell me what I was doing might be dangerous or, even worse, that I might become addicted to the high of an undercover operation?
My first assignment with Journey International sounded like a slam dunk. I was to cover Germany’s famous Christmas markets and, while in Munich, visit the opening of a new museum and make contact with Hans von Hausmann, the gallery’s handsome young curator. The FBI was working with a group of International Agencies who believed Hausmann had access to a hidden cache of masterpieces stolen during the 2nd World War and believed to be part of the World’s Largest Art Heist. It was my job to get close to Hans and, if possible, get eyes on the cache and report what I had seen to my handler. I wasn’t supposed to do any more than that. Certainly nothing risky. But you know what they say about those best-laid plans…
The truth is, I love what I do. I’d like to get back to a newsroom one day, but nothing beats a breathless chase in a Maserati through a snow-covered alpine pass or being in the crosshairs of a Russian mobster who would stop at nothing to see me dead. The fact is, I’m making a difference, and my instincts as a journalist have gone quickly from pen and paper to those more clandestine skills I needed to save my life.
Thank you Kat for visiting today!

After losing her job as an investigative reporter for The Phoenix Gazette, Kat Lawson has a new gig. The FBI has asked her to work undercover as a reporter for Travel International to cover Munich, Germany’s festive holiday scene—an excuse to get close to Hans von Hausmann, a very charismatic and popular museum curator suspected of hiding a cache of stolen masterpieces believed to be part of the World’s Largest Art Heist. The job comes with lots of perks: airfare, travel expenses, the opportunity to see the world…and for a seasoned reporter like Kat, nothing she can’t handle. But, when a trusted source is found dead, Kat realizes the tables have been turned. Armed with evidence that will expose a cache of artwork stolen from museums and the homes of wealthy Jews during the 2nd World War, Kat must find a way to avoid being caught by the German Polizie, who have enough evidence to charge her with murder, and those who want her dead to keep their hidden treasures forever secret. The hunter has become the hunted; now, Kat has a target on her back.
