Why Murder? Why Cozy? And When is a Murder Cozy?
by J.M. Roberts
I shared with a friend recently that I was writing a ‘cozy murder mystery’ and she laughed at me before giving me a serious eye-roll. What is cozy about murder? Sounds like a misnomer? Aren’t you writing about the violent death of a fellow human being? Well, when you put it that way, it seems rather odd, but let me explain…
I like, no I love, my murder stories, always have, except for true crimes which give me nightmares. I read police procedurals, suspense/psychological dramas with murders, and I especially love British murder mysteries and don’t get me started on TV shows.
Each sub-genre has its specific tropes/ required elements that make them what they are and so does the good old cozy, but what makes the cozy different? In my opinion, the key difference is that the story is not so much about the murder, it’s about the amateur detective that solves it. It’s about place, time and the relationships that surround the curious sleuth who solves the case. The murder itself is secondary to the solution.
In the Peggy Rector Mystery Series, the setting is very important to the story. A small rural Texas town, where gossip runs rife. Everyone knows everyone’s business, but do they know what’s in their neighbor’s heart? Grudges are kept close but given the right circumstances, they fester, seeking release. A small town limits the pool of suspects and ensures that our sleuth is familiar with most of them, maybe even related to them!
Friends are important to the sleuth who often enlists them in their investigations. Peggy has a circle of friends, including her neighbor and best friend, Wanda. The pair trust each other and will go out on a limb to help, even when they think what they’re doing is crazy! Peggy and Wanda have some great adventures throughout the series and I think everyone should have a BFF that they can count on through thick and thin.
What makes Peggy uniquely qualified to be a detective? First, she had a career in emergency room nursing, so she’s seen a lot of bad stuff. She’s also a writer with a creative imagination. She can think ‘outside the box.’ Peggy is emotionally intelligent; she can pick up on clues even when the suspect is aware they are giving off signals. She has an innate understanding of the human heart, what it wants, and what makes it tick. The thing I love about Peggy is that while she firmly believes that the killer deserves punishment, she can still connect with their humanity.
I hope that when readers read the Peggy Rector Mystery Series they think to themselves, I’d like to be friends with that gal!
