Killer Hooks: A Crochet Mystery
by Betty Hechtman
It is my pleasure to welcome Betty Hechtman
to Escape With Dollycas today.
Hi Betty,
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
I grew up on the south side of Chicago and while I live in the Los Angeles area, I still spend a lot of time there. Having the contrast of places makes me notice and appreciate the details of both cities. I have a degree in Fine Arts, but the most important experience I had in college was working on the student newspaper and writing a weekly column. It made me realize that I wanted to be a writer.
I got the idea for my personal mission in third grade when the girl who sat in front of me made a beautiful picture using a box of hopelessly broken crayons. I knew right then that was what I wanted to do. Take something that seemed to have no value and turn it into something wonderful. I learned how to take a piece of fabric and turn it into clothes for me and my mother. I taught myself how to take a ball of yarn and turn it into a hat or a blanket. And I managed to take random words and put them together into stories.
What are three things most people don’t know about you?
I really did teach myself how to crochet using a kids’ kit.
I have taken classes in improv comedy, magic, and tap dancing.
I was a featured extra in a film.
What books/authors have most inspired you?
I loved Nancy Drew books when I was a kid. And then I discovered Agatha Christie.
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I like to think my whole life is research—I just don’t know when I’m going to use it. I am always looking at places and people and thinking how I’d describe them. I do research just for my own curiosity. I am always amazed to realize how much I don’t know.
Do you ever suffer from Writer’s Block?
When I get stuck, I turn to a legal pad and a pen. Handwriting seems to free things up. The only problem is that sometimes I can’t read my handwriting after the fact.
What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?
Be patient. Be persistent. And find a writers’ group where you can get some honest feedback. It also helps that you get taken seriously as a writer.
When you are not writing what do you like to do?
Everything. Go places. Read. Cook. Crochet. Knit. Do yoga. Even just go for a ride or sit in my backyard and look at the orange trees.
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and why?
I’d like to go to Italy and taste all that pizza and gelato.
What is next on the horizon for you?
I am in the midst of writing the next Yarn Retreat Mystery after recently taking a trip to the area where the books take place. It is always so cool to see the real hotel and conference center after spending so much time there in my imagination.
I just signed a contract for a new series that features an L.A. crochet artist who inherits a yarn store housed in an old red schoolhouse. With the help of the quirky characters in the small Indiana town, she adds a tea room while solving the murder of the previous owner.
Thank you so much Betty for visiting today.
Keep reading for details about Betty’s new book!

When a baby girl is dropped off on Molly Pink’s doorstep, her life is thrown into disarray as she is putting together a troublesome author event at the bookstore where she works.
The author is a demanding former Hollywood columnist whose book is filled with upbeat stories, but who wants to promote a true crime podcast she is about to launch based on the dark side of what she left out of her columns.
At the same time, Molly’s son has asked her to investigate a potential investor in his production company. The baby, who happens to be Molly’s estranged granddaughter offers her an opening into an elite mommy group, a member of which is the wife of the person Molly is to investigate.
When the columnist dies suddenly, Molly finds herself in the crosshairs of an unfamiliar detective who considers her the prime suspect. Molly recruits the help of the Tarzana Hookers to help with all.
