All dressed up for the holidays, Clear Creek looks like it’s right out of a storybook. But the decorations aren’t just for fun. The tiny Rocky Mountain town is hosting a Christmas Festival sure to be used as a pattern for years.
While Jemma is busy with the Cozy Tree — a place visitors can buy hand-knitted hats and scarves to donate to people in need — Granny is busy taking bets on which day of the event Jemma will find a body. But to everyone’s surprise, this time Granny’s the one who makes the discovery!
Choosing to put her relationship with Brandon first, Jemma agrees to steer clear of the investigation. But Granny’s determination to solve the crime lands Jemma the impossible job of keeping the spunky old lady out of trouble, and breaking and entering is just the beginning of their adventure.
When the Cozy Tree is vandalized, it becomes obvious the pair is making someone nervous. Can Jemma and Granny knit up the investigation before Santa climbs in his sleigh?
Dollycas’s Thoughts
We arrive in Clear Creek just in time for the holidays and they have big plans, A Christmas Festival to help people in need, all while having fun. Jemma has set up a Cozy Tree, decorated with hats and scarves that people can purchase and then have them given to a variety of charities for those that need them desperately. She just hopes the event doesn’t have her finding a body. She can’t believe that her Granny is taking bets on when she will find the next one.
But the tables turn, and this time, it is Granny who makes the tragic discovery. Jemma wants nothing to do with the investigation, but Granny has other ideas, and Deputy Matthew Chase isn’t happy about it either. He asks Jemma to keep Granny busy and out of his case or else. As if she doesn’t have enough to do with her mother in town with a clear agenda, running her shop, and the cozy tree. Oh, I can’t forget, trying to have a meaningful relationship with Brandon.
Can Jemma keep Granny on a short scarf? or will they knit together all the clues and solve the case before Deputy Chase?
In Joy to the Wool, Jemma is in the middle of everything happening in Clear Creek and is juggling several balls of yarn as she tries to handle everything thrown at her. She really wants the festival to be a great success. She is wise enough to listen to those around her when someone tries to ruin her part of the event. Jemma’s mother Daphne, also known as Daffy is something else. Jemma has much more patience than me and I applaud the way she handles her mother. Jemma’s relationship with Brandon has a few bumps that add some more drama to the story too. All Ms. McKinnon’s characters are cleverly plotted whether they be core, supporting, or visiting characters.
There are some shady individuals in town but Jemma really does try to stay out of the investigation, but she can’t help making just a few inquiries. She also tries to rein Granny in before she finds herself, put in jail by Matthew or the killer’s next victim. Granny is one stubborn woman and doesn’t always listen. Her antics had me laughing out loud. The woman has some crazy ideas but you can’t help but love her. There was a lot of fun and games right up to the final dangerous reveal. The mystery was very well-plotted with the author dropping clues in all the perfect places. I had a couple of suspects in my mind but I was boggled by their motive until it was spelled out for everyone.
The Christmas Festival for charity was a grand idea. It truly is something that could be done in any town, anywhere. I really enjoyed the way friends and visitors came together to help Jemma make her Cozy Tree exceed expectations after a Grinch vandalized the tree. Friendships have always been a strong part of this series and this time they shined merry and bright.
Joy to the Wool is a fabulous holiday cozy mystery. I don’t think Jemma has found her last dead body but I believe she has found her home. The ending was positively heartwarming and I always love a happy ending. I can’t wait for my next visit the Clear Creek.
