Who would be crazy enough to commit murder while surrounded by dozens of crime mystery writers?
The evidence clearly points to one suspect. The problem is, there’s no way they could have done it.
Our cat detective and the Paradise Cove Mystery Society face an old foe in the fourth installment of the Detective Whiskers Cozy Mystery Series. The stakes have never been higher and the mystery has never been stranger.
Paradise Cove has another murder on its hands and Detective Whiskers is determined to solve the case.
A group of mystery writers have checked into Parrot Eyes Inn for a convention and Evelyn has asked all her friends for help to be sure all her guest’s needs are taken care of. Her son Kevin is also at the inn under court supervision following the incidents in book 1, Paw and Order. He confides to Sheila he is in fear for his life. He thinks the man he helped send to prison is out to get him after threats he has received. Sheila agrees to meet with Kevin on her break. But when she goes to meet Kevin she finds him dead, floating in the pool. The evidence confirms Kevin’s fears but there is no way the man could have committed the crime. It’s time for the Paradise Cove Mystery Society and Detective Whiskers to solve the mystery and cat-ch the killer.
This series is so much fun and Detective Whiskers is a purr-fect protagonist. His entourage, Sheila, and her friends are funny with huge hearts and maybe a bit of a drinking problem but together they can be a force to be reckoned with. They want to help Parrot Eyes Inn owner Evelyn in any way they can, especially after her son is killed. Bartending, checking people in and out, cleaning the rooms, making sure the conference rooms are set up properly all while trying to find Kevin’s killer. Even fisherman Jimmy gets in on the act by being a handyman fixing things around the inn. These characters continue to evolve so well as the series continues.
The animal characters, Detective Whiskers and his friends are cleverly written as well. I really enjoyed the way they looked after each other throughout the story especially when Jimmy was taken away from his usual spot on the pier.
Sheila, Tarrie Ann, Becky, and Julia work really hard to follow each clue but it is Detective Whiskers that ruminates and makes sense of them leading to his “a-ha moment”. Chief Anderson continues to frustrate me with his jumping to conclusions and then taking all the praise when the ladies and a lovable feline present him with everything on a silver platter. Oh, he got close this time to sharing the limelight, but just couldn’t do it. Maybe someday.
I really love the way Chris Abernathy tells a story. I know from the minute I sit down and open one of his books I am going to have a few hours of bliss while his characters and their antics entertain me.
Purrder, She Wrote is another delightful installment of this lighthearted cozy mystery series. A top-notch mystery with charming animal characters and interesting human ones will give readers a Perfect Escape from their daily woes. You will be smiling and even laughing out loud as you quickly turn the pages trying to solve the mystery. I encourage to to read them all in order for maximum enjoyment.
