HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!
Monday was my birthday. I received many birthday wishes all day long. Check-ins from the kids and grandkids are always special.
We were all looking forward to getting together on the 4th but something tragic happened in our hometown in the early morning hours that could have changed the whole day. Columbus has a huge Independence Day Celebration that lasts several days with a carnival, live music, bingo, a parade, tons of food, and fireworks, but at 1:31 AM on July 4th, a police officer responded to what he thought were fireworks being set off in the downtown area. There were also 911 calls about a fight. When the officer arrived on the scene he found a man who had been shot. He died soon after at the hospital.
Columbus is a small town of about 5500 people and a murder happening there is rare, but the small-town police department did a fantastic job. They assembled all resources needed from the city, county, and beyond. They gathered video evidence from the local business and the community to identify the suspect and the path he took fleeing the scene. They found the gun in that path. They worked the scene diligently knowing that in just a few hours tons of people would be arriving to watch the parade whose route went right through their crime scene. They also had to be sure there was no threat to the public. Before the parade started there was a plan to reroute the parade around the downtown area, but by noon, the parade start time, the police had cleared the scene and learned the suspect had left town and was probably in the state capital city of Madison about 45 minutes away. With the help of the Madison SWAT team, the man was apprehended shortly after the parade ended, about 12 hours after the shooting.
The victim owned a popular restaurant in town and was very well-liked. There has been an outpouring of support for his family. My heart breaks for the family and this wonderful town I call home.
After the parade, we were able to gather with our extended family. The mosquitoes were fierce and it rained off and on but we had our canopies up and plenty of bug spray. Great food and conversation made for a very good time. Watching the kids running around and playing together tickled my heart. The city’s fireworks had been postponed to Saturday night due to the rain but that didn’t stop Son #2 from setting off a few of our own in the pouring rain. Or me sitting in the rain to watch them.
Sadly that rain got harder and harder and followed us home. When we went to bed the basement was fine. When we woke up there was a couple of feet of water down there again and it was still coming in and things were floating. We didn’t fair as well as we did the last time. Totes had opened and things like a chest that held precious things that while up high fell in with everything else. My wedding dress which I hadn’t opened since it was packaged to protect it from occurrences like this 41 years ago was recovered, wet, and with some mysterious blue spots, along with the jacket and the veil. I’m sure it can be cleaned and saved. Books, fabrics, DVDs, things that belonged to son #1, and more weren’t so lucky. We are still assessing the damage and cleaning up the mess. We have decided not to tempt fate and store anything down there again. We hadn’t had any issues with rain like this before but now if it happens a 3rd time that would not be the charm.
How was your week?

I am so sorry about the damage. We had a pipe burst when we weren’t at home, and I lost some precious memories. Hope this week brings plenty of sunshine.
You’re the second person to say a figh broke out on their 4th…thats terrible that now people can’t stop thinking about violence on the holidays.

I’m so sorry to hear about the murder and the flooding in your basement. I cleaned and made pillows out of my wedding dress about ten years ago, and I was surprised at how well the dry cleaners did on the old dress before it was altered.
I love to see the joy you experienced watching the kids have fun this week!
Sad to hear about your town experiencing crime and about your flood in the basement. I don’t trust basement storage, and every story like yours reinforces my view. Good luck restoring your wedding dress.

I’m so sorry about the flood.
