HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!
Last weekend we celebrated our family Christmas with a getaway to the Wisconsin Dells. We had a great time opening presents and playing games but the main reason we booked the hotel we did was for their huge waterpark. We were in suits and headed to the waterpark almost as soon as we arrived. When we arrived we were rudely told that the elevators (yes plural) were out of order. Well with me in my wheelchair and Mr. Dollycas using his upright walker that wasn’t good. The woman went on to tell us we could either use the stairs or walk around the outside of the building and down a hill to get to an employee entrance and hope someone would see us and let us in. It was windy and about 5 degrees outside and we weren’t dressed for that. I could handle a flight of stairs with the kids’ help but Mr. Dollycas returned to our room. That’s when we learned it wasn’t just 1 flight of stairs, it was THREE averaging about 20 stairs each. Plus after the second set, we have to weave through a landing full of people, tables, and chairs to get to the last set of stairs. There we had a choice, a slippery wet stairway direct to the waterpark or a dry set of stairs that would take us outside for about 15 feet and through a door to the waterpark. We took the latter and moved very quickly. Thank God, after all these years, my children and grandchildren know just how to get me around because a few hours later we had to do it all over again in reverse. I was excited because this waterpark had handicapped lift chairs to get me into 2 different pools, but yep, you guessed it, they were out of order. I had a good time watching all the kids have fun going down all the water slides and visiting with them when they took some breaks. While the waterpark was a disappointment for me, the kids had a great time.
The kids later met a family with a disabled son who told them they had been carrying him in his wheelchair up and down the stairs 3 times a day since Friday morning and they were booked for through Monday. It is a clear violation of the American Disabilities Act.
After our adventure at the waterpark, we went back to our rooms and donned our long underwear, winter coats, hats, and mittens because the grounds of the outdoor waterpark had been turned into Nights of Lights. It was the final night of the event, and it was well worth bundling up. The kids walked through the experience. I tooled around on my scooter, Papa used my wheelchair, and we warmed up with hot chocolate and campfires and enjoyed the lights.
My Blogoversary Celebration was fabulous. Many new people checked out my blog. I saw entries from people who hadn’t visited for a while. Plus my daily visitors showed me some love as well. This blog is so special because of all the wonderful people I meet virtually. I am excited about the year to come.

Unless you have experienced it or unless you have someone close to you who has experienced it, it’s difficult to understand how essential it is to have accommodations for handicapped people to get around. One of the ladies in our group that goes to hear authors speak is in a wheelchair and she gave up the group this year because it was so difficult to get here and there in the venues. It makes me very sad when I hear your story about the lack of accommodations, Lori, on your family trip.
Sorry about the hotel and waterpark. That’s super disappointing. I hope you were still able to have lots of fun with your family!
I hope they refunded your money…I certainly wouldn’t have paid or not the full tab…
I’m so sorry you had to deal with lack of accessibility on your Christmas family vacation. I can only assume the hotel had been putting off needed maintenance, for all the elevators and pool lifts to go out at once. I’m glad you were able to enjoy your holiday somewhat anyway, but the hotel certainly should have refunded some or all of your money, or offered you some other compensation.
Congratulations on your blogaversary! I’m sorry I missed it, but I’m glad the celebration was a success. I hope you continue blogging for many years to come!
I’m sorry your trip not anything you should have experienced. What the hotel/water park did was unacceptable. It’s very nice of you not to say which of the water parks it was. I live in the suburbs of Chicago and I know plenty of people who will be going to the Dells come spring break–or even for the 3 day weekend coming up. I’d be happy to share on my social media which waterpark/hotel they should avoid! One thing you could do, if you want, is contact the Wisconsin State’s Attorney, your experience is worthy having the powers that be look into it, so it doesn’t happen to others. Big hugs!
How disappointing that you had so many accessibility issues at the water park. And belated blogiversary wishes.
It sounds like you had a good time, despite the elevators. With my bad knees and my husband’s walker, we usually book first floor accommodations but it sounds like the pool was below the main floor. That is unacceptable to be out that long.
