Excerpt
Approaching the village of Kyle of Lochalsh, Mia slowed the car, respecting the speed limit. The bridge to the Isle of Skye was a short crossing, less than two minutes.
Mia checked the GPS. It would be about an hour before they arrived at their B&B outside of Dunvegan. Mia noticed the arrows painted on the road directing drivers to stay in the correct lane. As they drove by villages, homes stood away from the road.
They left the main highway to get to the village of Dunvegan. Mia slowed down to maneuver the narrow, twisty roads. She had to pull off to the side when she met traffic coming toward them. They finally arrived at the B&B around six in the evening.
The B&B had beautifully landscaped grounds with flowers growing in beds and borders and a well-manicured lawn. Chairs and tables were scattered on the lawn. The B&B itself was a large three-story home, painted white with window boxes filled with pansies. There was a yellow door at the front of the house. Mia followed the driveway to the parking lot behind the B&B.
Mia stopped suddenly. There were two police cars and uniformed officers were talking to several people.
Her heart pounded. “What’s going on? Why are the police here?” They hurried out of the car.
At their arrival, two men dressed in civilian clothing turned toward them. With a start, Mia realized she recognized one of them. Luke Forbes. He and Mia had dated exclusively in grad school and lived together their last year at school.
Mia watched as Luke spoke to the man next to him and nodded in her direction. They walked toward her.
“Mia, it’s Luke, Luke Forbes.” Luke reached Mia and Diana and held out his hand to Mia.
“Luke, what are you doing here? I thought you were at the British Museum.”Mia shook his hand.
“Dr. Mia Reid, I’d like to introduce you to Detective Inspector Anderson of Police Scotland.”
DI Anderson leaned forward and shook Mia’s hand. “Pleased to meet you.”“This is Diana Scott. One of my students from Lakeview University, in Lakeview City, Canada.” Mia waited until they had finished with the introductions. “What’s happened?”
“I’m afraid there’s been a death at the dig,” Anderson said.
