Murder: best served with popcorn.
That’s the mantra for the members of the Monthly Murder Movie Club at The Northwoods Movie Theater. Every month, this eclectic group of northern Michigan residents gather to watch a murder mystery movie on the big screen. After stopping the projector in the middle of the movie, the members gather to discuss the crime and suspects, each making a whodunit pick before resuming the movie. The hair dresser with the scissors? The jilted lover with poison?
But nothing is normal on this Monday morning when the club members find the ticket-taking popcorn maker John E. Cash in the lobby of the theater, deader than any actor in their beloved movies. Using their unique talents and eccentricities, the Monthly Murder Movie Club members work collectively to solve the crime before the Northwoods Police force does. Members strive to protect the reputation of their beloved theater–and to protect their Monday meetings–because what each member is discovering is that there is so much more to their Monday club than a good old-fashioned murder mystery.
Found family, new friends, and murder investigations!
Dollycas’s Thoughts
In this first Monthly Murder Movie Club Cozy Mystery, we meet club members Rishard, no that isn’t a typo, Roberta, April, Vicki, and Yoly. They meet each month on a Monday at the Northwoods Movie Theater. At a certain point, the movie is paused and the members discuss the suspect, weapon, and motive. After the discussion, each member fills out a card listing whodunit, with what, and why. Then they watch the rest of the movie to see who’s right. The winner gets “bragging rights for the month and a small plastic trophy – which is coveted by all.”
On this particular Monday when they arrive ticket taker and popcorn maker John E. Cash (Junior Cash) is not in his usual spot and there is no popcorn. What they do find is that Junior has gone to the great movie theater in the sky due to a very unnatural cause. But do the Movie Clubbers call the police right away? No, they put up caution tape, take notes, make observations, search the place, argue with each other, take a key piece of evidence, and treat it as their own private mystery until another person arrives and they finally make the call.
Can they solve the murder before the police? Or will the killer bring down the curtains on all of them?
Ms. Blesy has introduced an eclectic cast of characters for this series including a feisty cat named Angela. Each has their own talents and strengths and very different personalities. At first, they seemed to barely tolerate each other but they were a little closer by the end.
I like the idea of a Monthly Murder Movie Club. It sounds like a lot of fun but I didn’t like that they didn’t call the police right away and fudged on the details when they did. Officer Cleary wasn’t happy with their interference. I appreciated that he kept his cool with the clubbers and thanked them while explaining that a murder investigation isn’t like their monthly movie mystery game. I know they will meddle again, this is just the first book in the series, but I need them to at least realize there could be danger. I did enjoy how they all worked together as a team with no one taking a clear lead and that the story was told from all their points of view.
The story is fast-paced and at under 200 pages, it can be easily read in an evening. Ms. Blesy sprinkles humor throughout the story. Each scene is described in detail so it was effortless to envision everything happening.
Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday is a fun cozy mystery that has laid the groundwork for the series to continue with the requisite quirky small-town characters and an interesting mystery. I hope the series continues to fill each day of the week. Murder on a Tuesday is set to be released in a couple of weeks on March 25. It sounds like the movie clubbers will be in the thick of another real-life mystery.
