HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!
Last week was hot and rainy. The Grand’s games were canceled and rescheduled, but Nana and Papa stayed home.
Friday night, the weather was more to our liking, so Mr. Dollycas and I went over to the local park, where the annual summer festival was taking place.
You see, I grew up as a firefighter’s kid in the 60s and 70s, and nearly every summer weekend, there was a firemen’s festival happening somewhere that we just had to attend. Parades, carnivals, baseball games, bingo, dunk tanks, food, and water battles filled my weekends. There are still some of these events taking place, but not like back then. My favorite thing to watch was the water battles, and I always made sure I had a spot in the water-cast-off-spray on those steamy hot days. If you are not familiar with water battles, firemen team up in groups of three to battle teams from other departments. They aim their hose streams at a barrel on a wire and try to push it to the other team’s pole.
Well, our town’s festivals had water battles, and Friday night, there were 11 teams from 8 nearby towns competing against each other. As old people, we stayed out of the spray but enjoyed watching all the little kids have fun in the spray and the puddles.
Also at the festival was a Pier Pups Dock Diving Competition. There are 4 skill divisions: Freshman, Open, Pro, and Master. Each dog and handler team had two turns on the dock to get the longest possible jump they could. Some dogs were local and were diving for the first time, while some had a little more experience. Then there were the other divisions with dogs that travel from event to event. The water dogs were leaping 22 – 28 feet. A pitbull mix did well too, but there was a dog who had Australian Cattle Dog in his mix, like our Daisy. He ran the entire deck length and ground to a halt at the end, and then did a little jump into the water and returned without the toy his handler had thrown. The announcer called it 6 feet, and he was being generous. In his second run, he did the same, but did bring back the frisbee the handler threw. After that showing I am sure Daisy would do the same. Now if there’s a herding competition, she’s your girl. Sadly, we didn’t get any water shots. LOL, we were too busy watching the dogs.
After checking out some of the booths, we returned home, commenting on how different it was to go to things like this without all the kids. We can do it on our own, but it is a lot more fun when they come along. It was good exercise for hubby and his new knee, and a lot more fun than PT.
Blogging and reading were great all week. We are booking August book tours, and I am excited about all the new books and authors.

It was a nice week except for getting sick (caught from my family). That’s how it goes mom gets it after everyone else. Looks like you had a great week. I didn’t know about the Firefighters festival. That looks like fun. Thanks for sharing.
The fireman’s day looks fascinating – I love how they use water to move the barrel. Though I think we’re going to be having hosepipe bans shortly, given we had such a very dry spring. Glad you had such an enjoyable time – and yes, it is more fun with the children but at least you can go at your own pace when you’re on your own. Glad to hear that Mr Dollycas’s knee is doing well.
thanks for the fun memories! 🙂
I especially like the smart Australian Shepard
Sounds lovely.
The firemen must have had a great time. I didn’t know about any of this, so I enjoyed your post a lot.

I’ve never heard of an event like this for firefighters—it sounds like great fun. I’m so glad you got to attend, Lori!
Have a great week.
