She can touch an object and sense the emotions of the people whoโve held it beforeโฆ
After solving the mystery of her predecessorโs death, geologist Petra Cloch wants to focus on her new job as the rocks and minerals curator at a quirky, small-town New Mexico museum. But her friend and colleague Liberty is suspicious of the โaccidentalโ death of Frank Underwood, a retired petroleum engineer and rockhound who unexpectedly died while hiking. Frank acted odd and secretive in his last weeksโmumbling about an incredible find in the desert and aliens. Was he showing the first signs of dementia, or were more sinister forces at work?
Petra agrees to help excavate the truth, and soon, instead of meeting for book club, she and her friends become amateur investigators. Petra uses her gift and her brains to sort through the contradictory stories and confusing clues as she and her friends dig for answers.
Did Frankโs heirs decide to hasten their inheritance? Or did his rock shop business partner decide to go solo? Petra joins the local geological club to discover whether someone there acquired a taste for murder, because theyโll need rock solid evidence to catch a killer.
Perfect for fans of Paige Sheltonโs Alaska Wild Mysteries and Heather Grahamโs Krewe of Hunters!

Dollycas’s Thoughts
Geologist Petra Cloch has the gift of psychometry, the ability to hold an object that spent time in human hands and pick up emotional echoes of the past residue left behind by the people who used or wore or loved the item. It is an ability few people know about, and truthfully, she doesn’t even know why she has it or all the capabilities she may have. She has moved to Bonneville, New Mexico, for her new job as the geological curator at the Bandit Museum on Route 66. Her gift helped solve the mystery of the former geological curator.
Her co-worker, Liberty, has become a friend and is the only one who knows about Petra’s gift. Liberty, who also has a special gift, has some concerns about the death of retired petroleum engineer and “rockhound”, Frank Underwood. Frank died while hiking on trails he often travels. People have said he had been acting strangely and tight-lipped the last few weeks, and telling a few about an extraordinary find and mumbling about aliens. His wife believed it was a sign of early dementia, but what if it wasn’t?
The members of the “book club” gather to figure out if Frank’s death was truly accidental or if the man was murdered. They set out to dig up clues while Petra uses her gift to get to the rock bottom of what happened to Frank Underwood and why.
Petra is becoming more comfortable in Bonneville, making friends with her colleagues at the museum while getting to know others in the community, like the sheriff deputy’s wife, Elena, and her next-door neighbor, Shelley. Even Kit isn’t as creepy this time. We get to know all the core characters better as they continue to develop throughout the story.
Frank was an interesting man. He co-owned a rock shop with Otis Zimmer, but was more of a silent partner because he would rather be out hiking, looking for rocks and gems. His death was surprising, but sadly, there were people with a motive to want him dead. New in town, Petra was not familiar with any of them, but others are, so she could tag along, ask some questions, and touch a few things. There may be a huge clue in the museum; they just have to find it.ย When the clues start to fall into place, they come up with a great plan, but it could put their lives in danger. This was one of those stories that had me on the sidelines, saying “just wait,” followed by Oh! You have to do something. Had it been a movie, I would have been watching through my fingers. I’ll just say, “teamwork makes the dream work”. I did have the right villain at the top of my suspect list, but I was mad about it and would have loved to be in on the takedown.
This second Reluctantly Psychic Murder Mystery was another very entertaining read from Kris Bock. Death at Rock Bottom takes us to the New Mexico desert, with an interesting protagonist that I really like, and a very intriguing mystery. Kris Bock’s detailed descriptions pull readers right into the story. From the museum to the desert and every place in between, I felt like I was right there. She even made me feel the heat. We have been enjoying a heat wave here, normal for July, but it was nice and hot for the residents in Bonneville in April. Like Petra, I am not sure a “dry heat” would be tolerable there in the summer months. We will have to wait for the next book to see. I am keen to see what this author comes up with next.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.
