HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!
Back in August, I told you about my new way to relax: watching tiger videos from a nearby zoo, and my plans to visit in person soon. Life was busy, and our new grandson had arrived, but we had been watching the weather forecast and saw that last Saturday might be the last 60-degree day until Spring. We awoke to a warm but very windy day, so we decided it was time to go to the Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary. Mr. Dollycas and I were joined by Daughters 1 & 2, Kaden, Remington, and Korbyn. Most of us bundled up, I broke out the long underwear, but the older boys were in shorts and sweatshirts.
We arrived about 45 minutes later, and the place was busy but not packed at all. You have the choice of walking or renting golf carts. With us, old disabled people, it was definitely golf carts. I was amazed by how large the sanctuary was and the variety of animals. The animals were in large wildlife enclosures with plenty of grass, rocks, and trees. It really is a beautiful place, and the animals come first and are very well cared for.
I loved how close we could get to the animals. It wasn’t long before Remi grabbed Papa’s camera because he could walk right up to the fence. Here is just a small gallery of his pictures. He took over 200 pictures.
Then we weaved around the trails to find the tigers, and there are several, and they are beautiful. The people were gathered at the tiger cubs though, and this disabled old lady hopped right off the golf cart and made her way to a picnic table right up by the fence. The people in front of me quickly moved along and I sat down and joked my family could come back next week and pick me up. Many others watching said they would join me.
When we arrived, it was naptime. After watching all the videos, I, and others knew them by name and their idiosyncrasies, and we began talking to them hoping to wake them up, and soon they began to move. Tigerlee, the white cub, first made his way over to Mama Ginger and crawled all over her. He was soon joined by siblings Khona and Reina. Sienna was the last to move after all the others had headed to the play yard. Mom Ginger is so patient with her cubs, first nursing them and continually licking them, now teaching them and letting them play. The cubs have not met their dad, Jona, yet, and he was hiding when we were there. We moved down along the fence to take in their entire area. Older siblings are nearby. I truthfully could have sat there for hours, but who would have figured, the boys in their shorts were getting cold, and the park did close at 4:30.
They are all much bigger than they looked in the videos. I am unsure about the adult tigers, but the cubs are now about 30 pounds.

The Cubs

I can’t say enough about how much I have fallen in love with this place. They do allow you to drive through in your car from January 2 – April 18. Right now, it is Christmas at Shalom, where you can walk or drive through. Walking only during daylight hours, and they light the place up at night to drive through. If you live in Wisconsin or travel here, I would recommend finding time to visit. We are already planning our next visit. You can find out all about it on their website HERE. You can also check out their videos on their Facebook page HERE. The page is very interesting and educational.

Great animal pictures!! Glad you enjoyed the zoo so much. Sounds like all your previous video watching made it seem like you were visiting old friends 🙂
What a wonderful adventure! I’m so glad that you seized the day and went before the weather turned unbearably cold. It looks like Remi had a great time, too. Wonderful photos.
Thanks for sharing the zoo pics! So fun to see.
