HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!
It was a hard week.
The cozy mystery world lost another wonderful author on January 3. Maya Corrigan wrote the Five-Ingredient Mystery Series. Her daughter wrote on her Facebook page that she passed away after suffering a stroke on December 28, surrounded by her family, and she was not in pain at all. She was able to be a tissue donor to help burn victims, which was very much in line with her wishes.
Then the murder in Minneapolis on Wednesday really tore me apart. Then the comments made by members of the current administration made me furious. My heart was breaking. While thinking about writing this post, I saw a post on Instagram that provided the words in the graphic at the top of this post. Her post accompanying the quote resonated with me, too.
You are angry because people are telling you that fire that is destroying everything which you can see with your own eyes doesn’t exist. You are angry because good people are being hurt. You are angry because you have known a better world than this is possible and you are watching any hope that better world being taken from you and everyone you love. Your anger is justified. Your rage is righteous. ~Nikita Gill
I am sure most of you have watched the videos; make your own judgment. My first thought was that it could have been one of my daughters. Daughter #1 has taken part in peaceful protests, and I am sure Daughter #2 would have been right there with her. Then my heart broke for her family and friends. To realize this can happen in the United States of America is downright scary. And then it happened again in Portland with 2 people injured. Unlike the death of Renee Good, there weren’t many witnesses, and the victims survived, but I agree with the mayor of Portland. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson told reporters, “We know what the federal government says happened here. There was a time when we could take them at their word. That time is long past.”

It is the dehumanizing of people and the rounding up of people who have done nothing wrong and the lies and the glorification of people who do terrible things that is weighing me down. As a former librarian it is the lies coming from places we used to trust that hurts most.
We will continue to press on for the good things in this life.
