After months of giving into her wanderlust, free-spirited violist Octavia Fields is ready to get back to her Aerie Pines music shop. But she hasn’t even had a chance to unpack before running into her teenage nemesis, who’s there to solo with the Aerie Peaks Symphony. Things get even more interesting when Octavia learns the conductor is none other than her ex-boyfriend, who seems to think theyโre engaged.
After finding her nemesis dead, Octavia jumps barefoot-first into another investigation. But Detective Dreamy isn’t about to let her investigate alone โ he knows her knack for attracting trouble. And he wants to keep an eye on the ex whoโs twisted being separated for a year into an engagement.
When Octaviaโs asked to step in as the new soloist, she has to balance investigating with rehearsals. And what should be an honor puts Octavia directly in the spotlight โ and possibly the killer’s crosshairs. With tension mounting both on stage and off, Octavia realizes someone might be tuning up for an encore performance.
She needs to unmask the killer before the final curtain falls and Octavia takes the deadliest bow of all!
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Octavia Fields is back at her Aerie Pines music shop after months of traveling wherever her spirit moved her to participate in some “good protests” and spending a month “living on a beach in a little cove on the coast”, and shopping for “gorgeous yarn”.ย Shortly after her arrival, she is ready to hit the road again when Tasmin Reed walks into her shop. She and Tasmin have a past, and it isn’t good. If that wasn’t bad enough, she learns her ex-boyfriend Morton is there to conduct Tasmin’s concert. He seems to believe he and Octavia are engaged.
Detective Dreamy “Jack” is there to welcome her back as well. Together, they go to the amphitheater to watch Tasmin’s rehearsal, but she doesn’t come onstage. Somehow, Octavia is tasked with finding the woman. She finds her, but she won’t be performing ever again. Quickly, Octavia finds herself in the middle of another murder investigation. Surprisingly, Jack decides to work with her and have her help his team find the killer. He trusts her, but he also knows that where she goes, trouble follows. Especially now that she will be taking Tasmin’s place in the upcoming concert.
Can the murderer be found before the performance? Or will Octavia have hit her final note?
Octavia Fields is a free-spirited, independent young woman who generally breezes through her life doing what she wants, when she wants, in Betty, her hippie van pulling her tiny house behind. She spends a couple of months a year at Aerie Pines in the Rocky Mountains running her music shop, when her two employees let her. She is also an accomplished violist. She is notably stronger this season, and I loved it. She and Detective Jack Price are getting closer every day. I love that too. Her inner dialogues and her banters with Jack always make me smile. More humor is added with Octavia’s ex at Aerie Pines and his delusions about their relationship. Several times, I wish I could reach into the pages and give Jack a big hug. Piper was happy to see her BFF, too, and was ready for anything: dinner, chats, dress shopping, and sleuthing.
Tackling the murder was a team effort, with Detective Locke and Detective Watson also working the case. Officer Wandless thought she had solved the case, but she was trying to arrest Octavia. Officer Wandless has a huge crush on Jack and has received special treatment to be assigned to his team. Jack was not impressed. Lenox Shaw, Tasmin’s personal assistant, and Clara Voss, her agent, were suspiciously unhelpful, but Tasmin had made her share of enemies over the course of her career. Morton was also among the list of suspects. A bit of vandalism stoked Octavia’s need to find the killer. Piper had a grand idea, which landed them in the kind of trouble Jack worried about.
With a musical theme, an appealing cast of core characters, a captivating mystery with twists and turns, scads of humor, a dash of romance, and a beautiful setting, Die to Your Own Tune is a wonderful addition to this series. I had a fun time at Aerie Pines and was very entertained. It was a Perfect Escape! I am an avid Rebecca McKinnon fan and look forward to returning to Aerie Pines soon.
