When Gina Morrison agrees to pen the memoir of celebrity chef Marisol St James, she expects high-pressure deadlines, diva behavior, and decadent dishes-not murder. But when Marisol is found dead in her restaurant’s kitchen, Gina’s literary aspirations take a back seat to her survival. Between a cutthroat industry, simmering secrets, and the demands of Marisol’s unfinished manuscript, Gina becomes entangled in a web of lies, rivalries, and danger. Worse still, Marisol’s killer may be keeping tabs on Gina to ensure she doesn’t write too much.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Gina Morrison has been hired to ghostwrite celebrity chef Marisol St James’ memoir. She thought she would be compiling recipes and anecdotes to fill the pages, but the chef was a natural storyteller with plenty of stories to tell. Gina had hardly started writing when her agent called to inform her that Chef Marisol St James had been brutally murdered in the kitchen of her restaurant, The Mix. The publisher wants to get the book out as quickly as possible, but the killer may have other ideas. Will Gina sort out the secrets and the lies and finish the manuscript? Or will it be too dangerous to tell Marisol’s life story?
Gina’s life had become stagnant. She is a homebody, but she moved into her apartment years ago and has never unpacked. Gina leans on her friend, Mark, a successful author, whom she really didn’t know much about, but they had been meeting regularly for lunch for months. He insisted writers needed to “force themselves out of the house periodically and socialize to avoid becoming the Unabomber”. Gina connected with Marisol right away. During the interviews, Gina felt she was hearing the confessions of a long-time friend. The trust Marisol placed in Gina made her death particularly devastating. Gina wants to get justice for Marisol, but someone has made it a point to try to stop her. I found Gina very likable and evolving, and enjoyed her friendship with Mark.
Two terrifying events brought Private Investigator Drew Sherman into Gina’s life. Drew was already investigating Marisolโs murder and, with the help of his efficient team, sought to work with Gina and protect her. Gina questioned whether she could trust Drew, and the answer took time to be revealed. Drewโs right-hand woman, Jo, impressed with her ability to anticipate his needs and get things done. She also handled Gina’s mother like a pro. The investigation took Drew and Gina to Savannah and New York, delving into Marisol’s past. Much was revealed, leading them to several possible suspects, but not everything panned out as expected. I was very entertained following the duo around as they pursued clues and uncovered key information. But that didn’t stop Gina from walking into a very well-planned trap. She had to think on her feet to survive. That was an exciting scene!
Murder in the Mix truly lived up to its title. Ms. Eichhorn plotted a controlled mystery filled with times of chaos. The final scene, set at Christmastime, offered readers a glimpse of hope and excitement for the continuation of the series. While the characters were well-crafted, it feels as though Gina and those around her are only beginning to reveal their depths. I am delighted to see the author is at work on book two.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC.
