A wild and wickedly funny series debut, introducing readers to the irresistible and irrepressible private investigator, Peter Key.
Meet Peter Key: self-proclaimed “laziest private investigator in Texas” (it’s harder than it looks), unapologetic bisexual, dedicated stoner, and the surprised recipient of a windfall inheritance from an uncle he barely knew. Peter’s life was a mess before, but now― as the owner of a dilapidated house in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Austin―he has a mountain of debt to deal with and pressure to sell from every side.
But Peter doesn’t like to be pushed around. And when he discovers a bag full of cash, he starts to suspect his uncle’s death wasn’t an accident. He soon finds himself pulled into a lethal game where not everybody plays by the rules.
Fortunately, Peter’s never been good at following rules.
Sexy, suspenseful, and packed with Austin’s quirks, Killer Vibes is a wild and wickedly funny romp that introduces us to the irresistible and irrepressible PI, Peter Key.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
Peter Key is astonished when he is notified that he is the primary beneficiary of an uncle he had practically forgotten about. Peter, a bisexual unemployed stoner, is now the owner of a ramshackle house in a popular neighborhood outside Austin. But there’s a huge catch, which leads him to believe his uncle’s death had to have been murder. Self-proclaimed “laziest private investigator in Texas,” Peter finds himself caught up in a mess he can’t handle alone. He teams up with a real private investigator to try to help him stay alive long enough to enjoy his inheritance.
Jack Friday takes readers on a wild ride as we are dropped into Peter Key’s life. One day, he was in Dallas selling weed, sleeping in a garage, a bank account in the red, and his supply of antidepressants running dangerously low. A few weeks later, he’s in Austin and in a whole lot of trouble.
A wide variety of individuals find their way into Peter’s life. Real estate agents, hit men, a tarot card reader, a lawyer, a long lost cousin, a pharmacy technician with a lovely pair of olive eyes, a real private detective, and many others cross Peter’s path. Some are trying to convince him to sell his uncle’s house, some want him dead, others want to help him, until they also want him dead. Who can he trust? Every character had a hook that pulled readers deeper into Peter’s life, including a beautiful German Shepard named Brutus, who became his after a volatile event.
Mr. Friday filled this book with twists and turns. You never knew what was going to happen next. The key to the story is money, but each step forward brings forth more questions. Is Peter getting closer to the truth? Or is everyone lying to him? Along the way, more people die, and there are a few explosions, and Peter finds himself in some alarming situations. When PI Grady Bernaise enters the picture, he is able to give Peter some direction and move his investigation along. It is also when they both realize Peter has some great instincts, but doesn’t always make the best decisions. He also learns something he never suspected.
There is so much the author does right in this book. Humor is laced throughout the entire story. Peter is a flawed but totally likable character. His inner dialogues are priceless. New characters are introduced at a brisk pace. The interactions were all on point. Every scene is perfectly described. I don’t know if I will get the ugly kitchen wallpaper out of my head. The garage is very interesting too. Cleverly plotted, the story takes readers on a journey of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The confrontation and takedown were explosive and had me glued to the edge of my seat.
Killer Vibes caught my attention with its inheritance from a mysterious relative theme. An imperfect, interesting main character drew me into his story. The stockpile of surprising twists and turns made the book impossible to put down. It was so much more than I expected. The cliffhanger has me wishing we won’t have to wait too long for the Second Peter Key Mystery. He has set this series off to a spectacular start. You will find Killer Vibes on my Best Reads of 2026 list.
