Spooky season has arrived, and the tiny Rocky Mountain town of Clear Creek is preparing to welcome witches of all sizes for a much-anticipated Witches’ Walk through the nearby woods. The event promises treats for tourists and locals alike.
When the event planner, Emmilene, steps into the woods a few days before the Walk, she knows her plans are about to unravel — there’s a body under the trees. Unwilling to face it on her own, she turns to Jemma for help.
Once again, Jemma finds herself woven into an investigation. When the Sheriff decides it’s time to minimize her involvement with the case, Jemma refuses to be cast off easily. She’s determined to out-stitch the Sheriff to the truth.
But hunting a killer during spooky season will take every trick Jemma has up her sleeve.
Dollycas’s Thoughts
It’s Halloween in Clear Creek, and a Witches’ Walk is set to be the big attraction. The Walk is family-friendly, but after it closes, the woods are decked out to be much scarier: The Witches’ Curse. But long before the festivities, organizer Emmileen travels down the trail to make sure it is clean and ready to set up with all the lights and decorations. She is shocked when she stumbles across a body. Does she call the police? No, she calls to have Jemma come right away.
Jemma should be focused on her upcoming marriage to the resort’s Head of Security, Brandon, but of course they both are going to be involved in another murder investigation. Sheriff Matthew Chase knows this, and he begs Jemma not to do any sleuthing on her own. Granny is also going to rally her group of armchair sleuths too, to help Jemma.
It is the season of treats and tricks. Jemma will need both if she is going to solve this witchy mystery and get back to planning her nuptials.
I was delighted to return to Clear Creek to catch up with Jemma. There is always something fun happening. Jemma, Kitty, and Chloe are hanging spiderwebs from the ceiling and decorating the windows, shelves, and tables of Black Sheep Yarns and Woolies with Halloween projects. I really miss all the crafting I used to do when I virtually visit this shop. Emmilene is busy; not only organizing the Witches’ Walk, but she is also Jemma’s and Brandon’s wedding planner. Granny is her usual self; she needs to be involved in everything; no distraction can keep her sidelined. She continues to be my fave.
Ms. McKinnon plotted out a crafty mystery with clues popping up in unusual places and interesting suspects. The Halloween theme gave a spooky feel to the whodunit. The victim’s identity and history added the unexpected intrigue. Clear Creek was full of tourists for the Walk; did the event bring a killer to their midst? A lot happens within these pages. I enjoyed following along with Jemma, but like her, I was focused on the wrong individual. A scary development put Jemma’s life in peril. I was surprised by the reveal and elated by the takedown.
I easily escaped into Cast Off the Curse. With charming characters, a unique setting, and a captivating cozy mystery, this book/series is a must-read for fans of this genre. The final book in the series, All’s Wool That Ends Wool, releases on October 8, 2026. I am both sad and excited. It will be hard to let these characters go, but I trust Rebecca McKinnon to give them a heck of a send-off.
