Dollycas’s Thoughts

Literature professor Chloe Sinclair is feeling pretty darn low after being left at the altar and passed over for a promotion. Her “very favorite person”, Daphne, just moved across the country for a new job, but even over the phone, Daphne knows Chloe needs an intervention. Daphne is an event planner for Hawthorne Cove, and her first event is a Jane Austen festival. Chloe loves Jane Austen; she even named her cat Mr. Darcy. She invites her to the festival. It took Chloe another day, and a picture on her ex’s Insta, to make her realize she needs her friend. Tickets bought for herself and Mr. Darcy. She was on her way to Hawthorne Cove.

Chloe was happy to see Daphne in person and willing to help her with the festival in any way she could. Daphne even had a period costume for her to wear at the first event, a ball with several actors portraying Austen’s leading men. But the actor hired to play Mr. Darcy at the ball has disappeared. Chloe goes off to search while Daphne continues to circulate and troubleshoot any issues. Chloe finally locates the man outside by the water, but he isn’t going to be circulating; this Mr. Darcy is DEAD! And the detective thinks Chloe or Daphne is the killer. They have no choice. They have to investigate before one or both of them winds up behind bars.

It’s not hard to get invested in Chloe’s life. She is a smart woman who fell in love with a jerk. She dodged a bullet there. She is also underappreciated at the college, and the games played there. She and Daphne have been friends since they were 10. It was hard to go through everything without her friend’s shoulder to cry on. She was “moping,” and Daphne knew it. Their friendship is strong, and it was a good thing Chloe was there to help her work through all the festival logistics after the murder, including some amateur sleuthing. Daphne introduces Chloe to her friend, Jack, an “insanely talented” gorgeous British chef. He and Chloe become fast friends, which makes Daphne very happy.

Ms. Caldwell plotted out a mystery with several suspects. The best way to question them was to get involved in the festival events. Chloe had to get crafty and play some games, while trying to ask the right questions to get people to open up. Chloe had her A-Ha moment, but with no firm evidence, how could she convince Detective Fletcher? She came up with a plan, told Daphne to trust her, and she would get what they needed. Well, common in life and cozy mysteries, plans usually go awry, and they sure did. Chloe impressed me, though, and the takedown was fantastic, as was the thank you after.

Hawthorne Cove is a charming little town filled with bookish shops and eateries: Poe’s Pub, Brewed Awakenings, Baskerville Bakery, Storybook Scoop, Bronte’s Blooms, and the Algonquin Inn. The public benches are shaped like giant open books. A true book lover’s dream! My kind of place!

One of Our Darcies is Dead has set this Hawthorne Cove Mystery Series off to a terrific start. With appealing characters, a clever mystery, hints of romance, and a delightful setting, it kept me totally entertained. I really enjoyed Chloe and Daphne’s strong friendship. Readers are given a little hint about book two, A Tale of Two Killers, in the final pages. I must say, I am very excited for my next virtual vacay to Hawthorne Cove.
