A BOOK COVER IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A COVER FOR A BOOK! —- Artist Teresa Fasolino Guest Posts

This is a reprint of one my posts over at Dollycas’s Thoughts. It originally appeared on June 9, 2011. It is one of my favorite posts and I wanted to be sure it was part of the history that came along with me to Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book. It also explains to new readers why I give credit to the artists and designers when I review a book.

Today’s book covers are absolutely gorgeous, the seem like works of art that should be framed and hung on walls to be enjoyed every day!!

This year I have started to give credit to the wonderful Cover Artists if they are listed in the book, but my interest kept growing and growing so I decided to contact an artist to see how a book cover was created.  Teresa Fasolino was that artist and she gracefully agreed to Guest Post here today to share the process with us.

Welcome Teresa

**********************************************************

Thanks Lori,

As an illustrator for so many Cozy Mysteries it is a real treat to learn that readers notice and appreciate the paintings on the covers of their favorite books and that your readers are interested in the process by which a book gets it’s cover. In a nutshell here’s the process of creating a painting for a Mystery Book Jacket.

The cover conference stage: When a new mystery manuscript arrives at the desk of an editor it’s “Conferenced” at a Cover Conference meeting where the editors divide up the lists of new manuscripts among the art directors. The editor discusses the new manuscript with the art director pointing out important scenes, clues and mystery elements. The suggestions along with a synopsis are passed on to the artist with the manuscript to help them understand what’s important to depict on the cover. It’s the art director who matches up the illustrator with the mystery series. I have heard of a new author asking for my work when shown past covers by different artists. I personally like to read the whole manuscript for imagery, settings and pictorial detail that are so important to get the feeling and texture of the story just right. Once in a while I might be given just a few chapters or important passages but prefer having the whole manuscript.

The sketch stage: After reading the story while underlining important passages the next stage of the process for the illustrator is to create and submit a sketch. I usually submit one sketch, but there could be two sketches submitted or one sketch with some variation in placement of the elements. This stage involves taking reference photos and gathering reference to draw and paint from. The sketch or sketches are submitted to the art director for comment. The art director shows the sketch to the editor for approval. This is the stage where any revisions to the sketch would be made including any need for more “bleed” or space for type.

The finish stage: Once the revisions have been made it’s on to the finish, which for me usually means a couple of weeks of work as my oil paintings are labor intensive with lots of “Cozy” details. There is only one piece of finished art. The art directors at Berkley usually work around my drawing to set a design for the series, which will then be followed for the rest of its life. Sometimes there is a separate designer in- house who works on designing the type but it is the Art Director who sets the look of the series. Finally the finished painting is turned in and must be approved. There are usually no revisions at this stage since any problems were caught in the sketch stage where changes are much easier to make.

Who knows what E Books will do to Book Jacket Illustration so far the computer age has not been kind to print and those of us who work in print media. The future is up to your readers.

Hope this is illuminating. By the way the art directors, editors and the authors at Berkley Prime Crime are very professional and so easy to work with. Mystery authors seem to be a delightful group and very appreciative of the cover art, some have honored me by mentioning my name and work in the acknowledgments.

Teresa

So I wasn’t far off.  I would love one of Teresa’s paintings to hang on my wall any time. They are very beautiful and I will continue to give credit where credit is due.  Don’t get me wrong I know we buy the books to read but with covers as awesome as these these books should just leap off the shelves and into our hands.  The next time you start a new book take a good look at the page the lists the copyright, most paperback books list the Cover Illustrator and Cover Designer.  Hardcover books show the information on the book jacket.  We have come a long way from when I started reading when the covers were just solid colors with the Title and the Author shown.

Thank you so much Teresa for bringing us into the world of an illustrator, I look forward to all the covers in your future.

FUDGING THE BOOKSWhile doing research for Fudging the Books, the 4th Cookbook Nook Mystery, I had to do a whole lot of chocolate tasting. Poor me. I tried different cocoas. I tried different high-end chocolate bars. I came up with a number of new recipes for the book, including of all things, cocoa croutons for salads and oranges dipped in chocolate.

Now, I can’t share any of the recipes from the book with you before its publication date, but if you didn’t know, I’ve had recipes in other books, and today’s is one of my all-time favorites.

From Stirring the Plot, the 3rd Cookbook Nook Mystery, which featured Halloween food, I also included French Silk Fudge Cake. It’s the cake served at the Winsome Witches luncheon. Jenna adored it and begged Chef Katie to recreate it. The coffee makes the difference!

Isn’t it fun when my fictional characters can make my life that much tastier?!!

What chocolate do you like?

Savor the Mystery!

blog_silkfudge_cakeFRENCH SILK FUDGE CAKE
From Stirring the Plot

Ingredients:

1 (3.5 to 4 ounce) bittersweet chocolate bar, chopped
1 ½ squares (1 ounce) unsweetened chocolate, chopped
5 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 ½ teaspoons coffee
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
3/4 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons flour (*may use gluten-free flour plus 1/8 teaspoon xanthan gum)
1/2 of a 3.5 to 4 ounce bittersweet chocolate bar broken into ½-inch pieces
If desired: whipped cream or frosting.

Note: I used Ghirardelli 72% dark chocolate instead of bittersweet chocolate.

stirring the plot

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease 4 mini-bundt cake cups.

Please 1 chopped bar of bittersweet chocolate, unsweetened chocolate, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Place bowl in microwave and cook on low power until the butter has melted and the chocolate is soft, about 2 to 3 minutes. Stir often to avoid burning the mixture.

In a mixing bowl, whisk cinnamon, coffee, eggs, egg yolk, sugar, and salt until combined. Stir in the flour. Mix in the chocolate mixture. Stir until smooth. Add the ½ bar of bittersweet chocolate that has been broken into ½-inch pieces. Spoon the batter in the prepared bundt cake cups. Fill about ¾ full.

Bake for about 15-18 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out wit “streaks’ of thick batter. The tops of the cakes will be nearly firm. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan for 5 -10 minutes. Serve warm…or wait 20 minutes and serve at room temperature with whipped cream squirted into the center of the bundt shape.

Note: If you want to frost this cake, consider baking it in cupcakes tins or in a 9-inch springform pan lined with parchment paper. Cook about 30-35 minutes.

The Agatha Award–winning author of Stirring the Plot returns to the Cookbook Nook in Crystal Cove, California, where February brings Pirate Week, National Chocolate Month—and bitter murder…

Pirate Week is sweeping through Crystal Cove and keeping Jenna Hart and her bookstore, the Cookbook Nook, plenty busy. But she’s not too swamped to also host the local Chocolate Cookbook Club’s meeting—especially because the guest of honor is her friend, candy maker and cookbook author Coco Chastain.

Jenna whips up a delicious event amidst the rowdy festivities, but the mood is soon broken by robberies, simmering tempers, and a dead body—Coco’s editor, Alison. The suspects turn out to be more plentiful than a pot full of gold doubloons, so to prove Coco isn’t responsible for the dastardly deed, Jenna will have to stir up some clues and figure out who’s the real sticky-fingered killer…

INCLUDES RECIPES!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

February in Crystal Cove is busier than you may think. First they celebrate Pirate Week and then it is Valentine’s Day. At The Cookbook Nook there are also the book clubs that meet. This month the Chocolate Cookbook Club welcomes Jenna’s friend, Coco Chastain, author and candy maker extraordinaire. She brings her whole crew to the meeting and things get just a little tense. Her publisher, Allison, seems to be working on books for several of Crystal Cove’s residents. When she is found dead Coco becomes the prime suspect but Jenna knows that is more to the story. She starts to stir things up as she tries to find the real killer. She is also is trying to find the pirate’s booty that someone made off with. Can this be connected to the murder…

When I pick up a book by Daryl/Avery I know I am in for a fantastic treat and should plan accordingly. She delivers her best story yet in Fudging the Books.

Crystal Cove seemed to be a quiet little place until Jenna came to town but she has plenty of friends to support and know all these murders are not her fault. Aunt Vera does her best to keep Jenna in line and readers giggling. She is one special lady. Jenna’s relationship with Rhett is also evolving nicely. Vera’s romance has hit a little bump in the road though. Bailey has a new pet thanks to her beau, Tito, and she is having problems getting him to like her.

The mystery is so well thought out and presented. The perfect amount of twists to keep us guessing. The author strikes a nice balance with the right amount of romance and humor. The characters are fun and very appealing. You want to know them better and care about their lives. All this but don’t forget the food, this time there is chocolate, and lots of it thanks to Chef Katie.

The setting is wonderful too. Crystal Cove sounds like a great place to visit and I would drop a bundle of cash at The Cookbook Nook. The shop is not only full of cookbooks but cozy mysteries that feature food. Several of my favorite author grace the shelves.

This book is quite a treasure, with pirates, murder, romance, humor and food! (Recipes included.) I am already excited for my next visit!

Cozy Wednesday with Kate Parker – Author of The Royal Assassin – Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

Kate Parker is my guest today and she is here to tell us about her favorite escape and her new book, The Royal Assassin, that was released July 7.

kateparker

Thank you, Lori, for asking me to talk about my favorite escape.

I’ve always been a fan of French Impressionist painting, and several years ago I had the opportunity to visit Paris. One of the first places I had to see was the Musee d’Orsay. In a gallery on the top floor was a display of Renoir’s paintings. I walked around a corner and BAM! I saw Dance at The Moulin De La Galette in person for the first time.

Dance-At-The-Moulin-De-La-Galette

To say I was struck by the power of that painting is an understatement. I felt as if at any second, I’d be able to hear the music and the laughter and see these people start to move. All this from paint daubed on a 4 foot by 6 foot canvas.

At that moment, I knew I wanted the words in my stories to come alive like the people in that painting.

Dance-In-The-CountryAlso on display that day was Dance in the Country, the most erotic painting I’ve ever seen despite the fact both characters are fully clothed. From the expression on his face and the positioning of his body, you just know what’s on his mind.

Julie-ManetAnd then there was the painting of Julie Manet. When I first saw it, I thought she didn’t like Renoir, perhaps was even afraid of him, and he captured that in the painting. Later I learned her father had just died and her mother was dying when this portrait was painted. Renoir caught her sadness and fear perfectly.

The_Royal_AssassinWhen I wrote The Royal Assassin, I knew my Russian Princess Kira would be a talented painter with knowledge of French Impressionism and skill in painting in that style. I made painting an important part of her makeup and her desire to paint influences much of what happens in the story. Painting is her passion and her escape.

In that, Princess Kira and I have something in common. The three paintings mentioned above could well have been viewed when she traveled to Paris before the start of The Royal Assassin and are still as powerful today. Unlike me, the princess could have met Renoir and not just admired his legacy.

Berkley wisely used Princess Kira’s talent for painting on the cover of The Royal Assassin. I find it one of the most beautiful book covers I’ve ever seen. Take a look and see if you don’t think so too.

Escape with Princess Kira and the Russians in late Victorian London as an assassin follows their trail, and Georgia, the duke, and the rest of the Archivist Society try to stop the killing. so curl up in your favorite easy chair with The Royal Assassin and raise your cup of tea to the giant talent that was Pierre Auguste Renoir.

From the author of The Vanishing Thief and The Counterfeit Lady comes an all-new Victorian mystery featuring antiquarian bookseller Georgia Fenchurch, who doubles as a private investigator for the secret Archivist Society…

When the Duke of Blackford enters her bookstore, Georgia knows the Archivist Society is in need of her services. The Tsar of Russia and his family are visiting Queen Victoria on the auspices of the engagement of the Russian princess Kira to the son of the Queen’s cousin. When Kira’s bodyguard is found dead on a train returning from Scotland, the Queen calls on Blackford to discreetly protect the princess and prevent an international incident.

The Russian royalty refuses help in finding the murderer, suspecting anarchists and demanding every extremist in London be hanged. But that is far from the English way. To get the job done, Georgia must go undercover as Kira’s English secretary. She soon discovers that anarchy isn’t the only motive in the case—and that someone is determined to turn royal wedding bells into a funeral dirge.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Russians are coming in this 3rd Victorian Bookshop Mystery and the Archivist Society puts Georgia Fenchurch right into the middle of the chaos. Russian Princess Kira is engaged to the Queen’s cousin and she has come to town to spend some time getting to know him better. Or has she? It seems the princess may have another mission in mind. Her bodyguard has been killed and the Queen is worried for her safety. Georgia is placed in the home undercover to protect her and to try and find out who is behind the recent murder. She is also trying to figure out Princess Kira’s real reason for her visit.

Kate Parker does it again. I stayed up late to finish this story because I could not put it down. I absolutely love Georgia. She goes wherever she is asked putting herself in danger time and time again. He relationship with the Duke of Blackford is very complicated and frustrating. Georgia is a commoner meaning she cannot marry the Duke if he wants to keep his title. Her dear friend Emma is also a brave soul and is in a complicated relationship herself with the Duke’s right hand man. Lady Phyllida Monthalf  is worried about all of them.

The Archivist Society is quite a group. The devise a plan and follow through with excellent results. The Duke of Blackford is a key member and even Sir Broderick in his disabled state is a force to be reckoned with. His logistics are a big part of their success.

This author does an excellent job blending the history and the mystery. She peppers it with just the right amount of romance and humor too. I felt like a birdie on Georgia’s shoulder traveling about London, from her home, to her shop, to the East End, and everywhere in between.

I am anxiously awaiting and very excited about the next book in this series. I am truly hoping that the next adventure shows the Duke that he can’t live without Georgia and the author finds some way for them to be together.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

When I finished this book all I could say is WOW!

Tricia is residing above the Chamber of Commerce office and volunteering there too as she waits for the insurance company to resolve her claim so she can renovate the Haven’t Got A Clue bookstore after the fire. While walking her sister’s dog, Sarge, they find Pete Renquist, the president of the Stoneham Historical Society, lying in the park gazebo and she quickly calls 911 but not in time to save Pete. It turns out he was murdered and Tricia is going to find out who killed her friend. There is also another mystery in Stoneham and she is going to solve that one too!

So much happens in this book and I couldn’t read it fast enough. One suspicion I have had for a while finally is confirmed but to say this story was a wild ride just doesn’t do it justice. Lorna Barrett hits this one completely out of the park and then some. She even had me shedding a few tears.

I love these characters and even with Haven’t Got A Clue closed for the time being we are able to keep track and catch up with all of them. Babies are arriving soon, someone has a new boyfriend and Christopher wants Tricia to give him another chance.

The entire Booktown Mystery series is fantastic and each installment tops the last. To get maximum reading enjoyment the series should be read in order. The plots are crisp and the characters have continued to grow. If you are already a fan of the series all I can say is READ THIS BOOK NOW!! You are going to love it!

Cranky Chamber of Commerce receptionist Betsy Dittmeyer is done reading people the riot act. After she’s crushed by a fallen bookcase, the next item to be read is her last will and testament—which is packed with surprises. It soon comes to light that Betsy was hiding volumes of dark secrets behind that perpetual frown of hers—and one of them just might have been a motive for murder.

While Tricia tries to help Angelica—the newly elected Chamber of Commerce president and Betsy’s boss—solve the mystery, she discovers a hidden chapter in her own family history that rocks her to her very core. And with her ex-husband and the chief of police vying for her affections, it’s doubly hard to focus on who might have buried Betsy in a tomb of tomes.

But as Tricia and Angelica try to read between the lines, they need to watch their step…and make sure the killer doesn’t catch them between the stacks.

Angelica is trying to start out on the right foot with the Chamber but Betsy Dittmeyer is not happy about it. Her point of view ceases to matter very quickly when her death has Angelica and sister Tricia trying to find out who helped bury Betsy under that pile of books. She wasn’t well liked so there ate quite a few suspects. It seems Betsy also has a few secrets that could have led to her demise.

Lorna Barrett does it again. My emotions were reeling with this story. I had tears in my eyes at one point.

Haven’t Got A Clue is a very special bookstore with very special employees. I love these characters. Pixie continues to shine and Mr. Everett is the perfect gentleman. Tricia is so lucky to have them by her side handling the ups and downs or not only the bookstore but Booktown as well. The are some changes coming to Booktown with Angelica leading the Chamber and Nigela Ricita Associates taking on a larger role in the properties in town there. Some other characters have some special announcements too that will be changing their lives.

Then of course there is Tricia’s love life or lack of a love life to add a little more to the story.

What I really enjoyed was that Tricia and Angelica continue to get closer as a family secret is revealed. It is time for these sisters to stick together and support each other.

The author has packed this pages with so much that I challenge anyone to put it down once you start reading. I truly hated for the story to end. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

Cozy Wednesday with Avery Aames – Author of As Gouda As Dead – Giveaway too!

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

It’s time to SAY CHEESE!! because Avery Aames is my guest today!!

Daryl Wood Gerber 0218 100dpi

As I ramp up for the release of As Gouda as Dead next week, all I can think about are easy things to pop into my mouth to keep my energy going. Little snacks. Mid-morning. Midday. You probably don’t realize how much publicity authors have to do to promote a book. Lots! Blogs, book sigings, social networking, giveaways, newsletters! It’s enough to make me want to give up writing… NOT. I couldn’t. I can’t. I have to write. There are too many characters in my head. They keep popping up. And stories. So many stories. So to write, I must eat!! Sigh. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. I sacrifice. 🙂

gouda as deadThis is perhaps my all-time favorite comfort-food appetizer. It simply melts in your mouth. The wine adds just a hint of a kick! For a gluten-free option, which I make for myself, I use gluten-free pasta and gluten-free bread crumbs. Everything else is good to go! Say cheese!

P.S. Timothy O’Shea’s Irish Pub, which is the fictional “origin” for this recipe, is featured in As Gouda as Dead.

IMG_2656MACARONI AND CHEESE APPETIZER
À la Timothy O’Shea’s Irish Pub

(Serves 4)

2 cup dried macaroni, cooked to tender (about 4-5 cups cooked)
1 clove garlic chopped
4 tablespoons butter
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup white wine
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
½ cup mascarpone cheese
1 cup grated cheese (equal parts Cheddars, Gouda, Monterey Jack)
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Pasta may be made a day ahead. Note: Do not forget to drain and set aside. You do not want the pasta to be “wet.”

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and cornstarch. Cook about 1-2 minutes. It will boil and thicken. Stir constantly.

Add milk and wine, stir, and let boil to thicken.

Remove from heat and add mascarpone cheese and grated cheeses.

Pour sauce over drained macaroni. Stir well. Fill 6-8 appetizer-sized ramekins with the mixture. Top with bread crumbs mixed with the Parmesan cheese.

Turn oven on to broil. Set the ramekins about 4 inches under broiler. Broil for 5-6 minutes until crisp.

Serve hot.

Enjoy!

~Avery

Someone is cheesed off . . .

Providence, Ohio, is celebrating Valentine’s Day with weeklong events, including lovers’ baskets with heart-shaped cheeses at Fromagerie Bessette. Charlotte Bessette is celebrating by finally walking down the aisle with the man of her dreams, handsome artisanal cheese farmer, Jordan Pace. But when a beloved bar owner is discovered murdered on Jordan’s farm, he believes they should reschedule their wedding given the grim turn of events.

Charlotte is heartsick over the postponement. This killer crossed the wrong woman. No one, but no one, is ruining her wedding plans!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Providence, Ohio is the place for lovers in this 6th installment of the spectacular series.

But murder plays havoc with a certain couples plans and they are not taking it laying down. Charlotte is very determined to catch the killer and get her plans back on track!

Avery Aames continues to make this series better and better. We have Charlotte’s crazy bachelorette party, all the shops are doing something special for Lover’s Trail Festival, the Providence Players are performing Love Letters, and there are several weddings planned. Nothing in the planned events included a murder! But before Charlotte’s party ends a phone message changes everyone’s plans.

All our favorite characters are back and they are all busy as can be. Charlotte’s assistant, Rebecca, is even trying out for the play as is Deputy Devon O’Shea. The mayor, Charlotte’s grandmother, is directing the play and heading up all the festival plans. Fromagerie Bessette is hosting a special wine and cheese tasting.  There is also a crazy woman filing complaints about noise pollution and running around town threatening people. Through it all Charlotte and Jordan just wanted a happy wedding day and then they went and found that dead body.

Readers like me have been looking forward to this wedding too so I really wanted this culprit caught so the happy couple could start their years of wedded bliss together without a murder investigation to hold them back. I was amazed at the number of suspects and as each one was crossed off the list I was  wondering what we were missing right along with Charlotte. The pages of this book were flying.

The author has a gift. She blends her vivid descriptions of the most yummy cheeses, seriously you can almost taste them, with a mystery that is so vivid it almost jumps off the page. The chapters are like potato chips, you can’t read/eat just one. I gobbled up As Gouda as Dead and now I am ready for some more please!

Halloween in Crystal Cove, California, is a big deal, involving a spooky soiree where the Winsome Witches, a fund-raising group, gather to open up their purse strings and trade superstitions. But party magicians, fortune-tellers, and herbalists are only the beginning of this recipe for disaster…

Jenna Hart has packed The Cookbook Nook chock-full of everything from ghostly texts to witchy potions in anticipation of the annual fund-raiser luncheon. But there’s one unexpected addition to the menu: murder.

When the Head Priestess of the Winsome Witches is found dead under mysterious circumstances, there’s no logical answer and plenty of blame to go around. With her aunt, Vera, unable to call on her ability to foresee the future, Jenna will have to use more than just sleight of hand and a few magic tricks to conjure up the truth…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It is Halloween in Crystal Cove so things are a lot witchier than normal. Plus Aunt Vera intuitive powers are on the fritz so that makes things even more interesting.

Daryl Wood Gerber has written a very bewitching mystery and of course Jenna is right in the middle of it. The problem is there are so many suspects that Jenna is following so many leads and putting herself in danger. The story has so many twists I figured everything all out the same time Jenna did. Isn’t that the way it is meant to be? Love it!!

The romance of Rhett and Jenna seems to be heading in the right direction and as usual Gerber stirs the perfect amount of humor into the plot. This installment also has much more witchcraft elements than the first two books but it is Halloween and that is the time spread all the superstitious and paranormal elements around.

You really can’t go wrong with a cozy by this author whether she is writing as Daryl Wood Gerber or Avery Aames. All her stories are completely captivating and very entertaining.

Cozy Wednesday with Kate Parker – Author of The Counterfeit Lady (Giveaway too!)

cozy wednesday 2013 640Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!!

I am excited to welcome Kate Parker today!

I stayed up late into the night finishing The Counterfeit Lady!

Summertime Heat
By Kate Parker

The_Counterfeit_LadyIn The Counterfeit Lady, my heroine, Georgia Fenchurch, experiences a summertime heat wave. She lives in late Victorian London, before air conditioning, electrically run refrigerators, and swimming pools. Cooking or lighting a fire is going to give off lots of heat. What is Georgia going to do?

_DSF0008Open windows. Stay out of the sun. Enjoy summer fruits, including those brought from the Mediterranean countries on refrigerated steam ships that made a favorite summertime drink, lemonade, possible. Anyone who could afford it would travel out of London to the seaside or the countryside, looking for relief everywhere from the Isle of Wight to Scotland. This era began beach vacations in England with the arrival of inexpensive train tickets and the building of summer resorts along the coast.

Georgia is a bookshop owner. She expects to continue to suffer through the London heat wave selling books and magazines to people too hot to do anything but read. She and her assistant Emma are busy in the shop, leaving the front and back doors open to catch any breeze. She isn’t about to lay a fire or have Phyllida cook anything but the lightest meals. And since this story is told about late-Victorian times, all three women are working in the heat while wearing corsets!

Then the Duke of Blackford returns to Georgia’s life, asking her to help him with a case of murder and espionage. A set of blueprints for Britain’s revolutionary new warship have been stolen from the study of the ship’s designer and his wife has been murdered. The designer’s wife was a cousin of Lady Phyllida, and when Phyllida learns of the killing, she wants Georgia to find the person responsible.

The duke also wants Georgia’s help because Scotland Yard believes the designer killed his wife and burned the blueprints to give himself an alibi. Why else have a fire in the fireplace on the hottest day of the year?

Georgia has another theory. The windows to the study were wide open and the killer could have left that way with the ship drawings. But why did the dead woman order the fire?

The duke believes the theft was engineered by the spies of a nation embroiled with Britain in the naval arms race of the 1890s. And no one had a better spy network or had invested more in the warship-building race than the Germans. The duke believes a German diplomat is their master spy and is waiting for receipt of the ship plans.

First Book in this Series

The Archivist Society, the organization of sleuths that Georgia belongs to, is called in to help locate the plans and the killer. Georgia is assigned the task of entering aristocratic society as a newly-arrived widow from the British Empire. With the help of Lady Phyllida who enters the upper-crust society she’s been hiding from for many years, Georgia begins the role of the duke’s paramour. Emma serves as their lady’s maid while passing messages to the Archivist Society and questioning the servants.

Now Georgia learns how the other half beat the heat. Sleep during the day and attend soirees at night with all the windows open, or travel away from London to country house parties. But there’s no rest for Georgia, who works in her bookshop while society women sleep and plays her roll tracking the spy through high society in the cool of the evening.

My interest in how people beat the heat in Georgia’s time comes from stories I’ve heard. When I was young, an elderly relative told me about a heat wave in the city she lived in. People brought out blankets each night and slept under the stars in the city parks. The police had to increase their patrols to prevent burglaries in all these empty households. And this was from a very proper relative who never went camping!

DIGITAL CAMERAIf you were in late-Victorian London, how would you have survived a summer heat wave?

~Kate
The first books Kate Parker read as a child were Nancy Drew mysteries and her mother’s Agatha Christie novels, and now she can’t write a story without someone dropping dead by chapter five. After years living in the Nation’s Capital, Kate moved to the South and began crafting historical mysteries. The first of the Victorian Bookshop mysteries, The Vanishing Thief, came out in December 2013 with the next, The Counterfeit Lady, arrived this August.

Who would suspect antiquarian bookseller Georgia Fenchurch of leading a double life—as a private investigator for the clandestine Archivist Society in Victorian London? When England’s national security is compromised, Georgia must pose as a titled lady to root out a spy…

Georgia, Lady Phyllida Monthalf and Emma return in this second Victorian Bookshop Mystery, as do the members of the Archivist Society and The Duke of Blackford. This time of Lady Monthalf’s cousin Clara has been killed and a set of very important blueprints stolen.  Clara’s husband has been arrested for treason and his wife’s murder. The Duke of Blackford enlists Georgia, Emma and Lady Phyllida’s help to catch the real killer. The fun begins when Georgia learns she will be playing the part of the duke’s new paramour, as if she doesn’t already get nervous enough around him. Georgia, a middle class bookshop owner posing as a titled Lady, what could go wrong? Well as we have learned with Georgia anything and everything.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Georgia is an extraordinary character and she is doing double duty trying to keep her bookshop afloat with a little help from her Archivist Society members while dashing off to party after party on the arm of the Duke, all in an effort to find the missing plans and the person responsible for a very brutal murder. She is a very intelligent woman but at times the clues take both her and the reader in circles. Plus she finds herself more and more drawn to the Duke of Blackford. Her mind knows a relationship between classes is highly unlikely but her heart is full of hope.

I thought the story had a real Cinderella vibe. From the moment the plan was put together both Georgia and Emma, who is acting at “Lady Georgina’s” maid, are treated to new clothes and all the accessories. Georgia attends fancy balls and dinners with the Duke arriving in the most beautiful carriages.

The mystery was quite good too as it appears that only Clara and her husband Kenneth were in a locked room when the robbery and murder took place. There are several suspects but placing them in that room is tough. Remember this story is set in Victorian times, no CSI techs checking for fingerprints and DNA.

I started reading this book on a beach during our recent Family Fun Day and I quickly noticed this was a book that needed my full attention, so I put it away and picked it back up as soon as I could the next evening and finished it at 2:14 a.m. the next morning. Once I started reading I just could not stop.

Parker takes us back in time and keeps us on our toes with very interesting characters, history and mystery. She adds a nice balance of humor and romance too. The dialogues were very entertaining. Anxious for book #3.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Hang on tight! This book gets off to a fast start and had this reader tuned in from page one.
