Reagan Summerside returns in national bestselling author Duffy Brown’s fifth Consignment Shop mystery, now for the first time in hardcover.

There are two social functions in Savannah guaranteed to get people talking: weddings and funerals. And just as consignment shop owner Reagan Summerside agrees to marry the hunky Walker Boone, her neighbors, sisters Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot, step up their business as professional mourners. They are so successful that the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center has hired them as a part of their retirement package. But the celebration over good business is cut short when the residents at Pines suddenly begin dying at an alarming rate. And the sisters are the first suspects.

Reagan has her doubts, however, and begins to look into the strange phenomenon. But then something even stranger happens: a body winds up in the sisters’ pink Caddy. The evidence begins to pile up and the suspicious case of Willie Fishbine, who swindled the sisters out of a fortune and coincidentally died prior to the Pines case, is reopened.

Not wanting Willie to be buried until they can find the killer responsible for the murders, Reagan must catch the culprit in time to walk down the aisle.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I was over the moon when I heard this series had found a new home. This is one of my favorite series and I sure wasn’t done with these wonderful characters.

Something I have been waiting for is moving forward in this book. Boone pops the question and Reagan says yes. They are moving forward in their life together with some major decisions like where they will live and the renovations that may be needed. Due to some crazy circumstances, their wedding party is going to be filled with some people I never suspected. That’s the good news. The bad news is a dead body is found in sisters Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot garden and another body with casket is hidden in Aunt Kiki’s garage. Both are connected to the Sleepy Pines Retirement Center and the sisters are prime suspects for what could be two murders. Aunt Kiki decides to go undercover in the retirement home to help Reagan solve the case.

Reagan Summerside owns the Prissy Fox Consignment Shop and her neighbors Annie Fritz and Elsie Abbot’s help out at the shop while Reagan is out trying to plan her wedding or catch a killer. Her mother, Judge Gloria and her Aunt Kiki are usually along for both. Her new fiancee Walker Boone does his best to keep all of them out of trouble. With two murders to solve his task is far from easy. I had so much fun following along with their antics. Ms. Brown’s Savannah, Georgia has its hands full with this gang,

Southern charm, snappy dialogue, genuine, unique characters, laugh out loud moments, and a top-notch whodunit grace the pages of Lethal and Old Lace. From the very first word until the last this story completely entertains.

I love the way Duffy Brown writes. Each new story quickly becomes my favorite. It was a bit of a wait for this book, but it was so worth the wait. It surpasses a perfect escape by quite a bit. Yes, this book gets my Paradise Rating. Thank you, Duffy Brown, for this marvelous story!

Next on Wren and Death’s Appraisal List:

Item #1: An Old Family Feud.

Item #2: A Missing Woman.

Item #3: A Body in the Rosebushes of their Dream House

Auctioneer Wren Morgan and her private eye fiancé Death (pronounced “Deeth”) Bogart are ready to meet each other’s parents and settle down together. But their sleuthing days are far from over. While Death and Wren are helping prepare auction items at an old supper club, a Viking reenactor nearly dies at the historical settlement next door. The cause? Seeing the ghost of his daughter, who went missing twenty years ago.

As Wren looks into what happened to the Viking’s daughter, Death is hired to investigate the theft of historical items that have high sentimental value. When their respective investigations turn out to be connected, the couple gets caught in a deadly conflict.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Wren and Death (pronounced “Deeth”) are stepping up their relationship and are looking to buy a house together. Wren thinks she has found the perfect place. Just a little problem, there’s a body buried beneath the rose bushes and everyone knows it’s there. Wren is also helping to organize an auction at an old supper club, situated right next to a Viking reenactment settlement. One of the participants almost dies when he thinks he sees his daughter’s ghost. She went missing 20 years ago, it is still an open police case but with no new leads. Wren decides to try to help him with her own investigation. Death is working on his own case of a theft from a museum.  It is not long before all these things start to connect. But solving all the mysteries could have deathly consequences.

Loretta Ross has created such rich characters for this series and you need to read this series from the beginning to appreciate their growth. Death and Wren have come so far since they first met, but there are still obstacles in the path forward. Obstacles they know they can work through together. Death’s PTSD is a huge hurdle but Wren loves and supports him in every way she can. Her parents finally meet him in this story and her mother especially has several concerns. The ebb and flow of this part of the story touched me as both a mom and a daughter.

I really enjoyed that all the mysteries in this series started from events in the past, 20 years ago, 40 years ago and more. Solved with newly found evidence, research, perseverance and a hastily formed plan. The author has her readers along for a fascinating ride.  I was on the edge of my seat for the exciting ending which is exactly what I have come to expect from this author.

The setting of this one and the history of the supper club and how it was created in the image of an actual place was compelling. I also like the background of the Viking Settlement historic site.

I love this author’s writing style. She takes on some stirring topics but injects humor in all the right places. Her characters draw you in and the mysteries hold you tight. I read the book all in one sitting. Another thing I have come to expect from this author.

A great series and a perfect escape!

#Review / #Giveaway – Lethal Licorice (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery) by Amanda Flower @KensingtonBooks #NetGalley

Too many sweets spoil the murder . . .

Harvest, Ohio, is a long way from New York City, where Bailey King left a coveted job as a head chocolatier to take over Swissmen Sweets, her Amish grandparents’ candy shop. Now, while caring for her recently widowed grandmother, she plans to honor her grandfather’s memory by entering the annual Amish Confectionery Competition. But between lavender blueberry fudge and chocolate cherry ganache truffles, Bailey may have bitten off more than she can chew when the search for a missing pot-bellied pig turns up a body suffering from sugar overload—the fatal kind . . .

A candy maker from a neighboring town who wanted Englischer Bailey disqualified for being an outsider, Josephine Weaver died from an allergy to an essential licorice ingredient. The suspects include Josephine’s niece, a young woman going through her rumspringa, or running around time, and Bailey herself. Now it falls to Bailey, who’s sweet on the local sheriff’s deputy, to clear their names and entice a killer with a cast-iron stomach for cold-blooded murder . . .
Recipe Included!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

The Amish Confectionery Competition has come to Harvest, Ohio and Bailey King has been allowed to participate even though she is not Amish. There are some contestants not happy that she is competing against them.  Especially Josephine Weaver and she loudly voices her opinion. But before the judges even taste Bailey’s licorice, she finds Josephine’s body. She was just trying to find Juliet Brody’s pot-bellied pig, the last thing she needed to see was another dead body. When the police hear about her argument with Josephine she knows she is going to be their prime suspect. Deputy Aiden Brody is sweet on Bailey, but she knows she is going to need to find the real culprit on her own.

Lethal Licorice picks up almost where Assaulted Carmamel leaves off. Bailey’s grandmother is still adjusting to life without her beloved, Jebediah. Bailey is honored to take his place in the Amish Confectionery Competition hoping to bring some sunshine back into her Maami’s life. Bailey also learns she has a new cousin Charlotte. Charlotte is going through the Amish tradition of rumspringa before making her decision to join the church. Her family, which includes the newly deceased, is not happy about her musical decision. This also lands her on the list of suspects.

I so enjoy the characters in the series. Bailey finding her way among the Amish is so interesting. She is strong and smart and committed to helping her grandmother in any way she can. A romance in her life is just on the cusp. Everyone seems to think she and Deputy Aiden Brody would make the perfect couple.

The characters all have a certain charm that made me what to know them all better. A young Amish woman, Emily Esh, really resonated with me. We have just barely touched on her life story and I hope we get to know her better in a future story.

Now this mystery was a fun one to solve. I am not a fan of licorice at all, but to have it be part of a murder was just fantastic. I had never heard of a licorice allergy but I suppose people can be allergic to just about anything. The victim owned a candy store in a nearby town and Bailey quickly learns of several new motives for her death and people not so sorry the woman is dead. There was also another woman entered into the competition who was pretty shifty so she is on Bailey’s list as well. But when the real guilty party is revealed I was completely shocked and surprised. I sure didn’t see it coming.

This story is a fantastic addition to this series. I love the peek that this author gives us into Amish life and the Englischers. Both books in this series are must reads.  Book 3, Premeditated Peppermint will be released September 25.

Event planner Jennifer “J.J.” Tanner is planning a cruise ship casino night—and she’s really going overboard. She even arranged for radio DJ Connor Mac and TV personality Miranda Myers to help the good times roll. But the party comes to a screeching halt when Miranda is found dead on the main deck…

With a boatload of suspects, the police focus in on J.J., who, though recently linked with Connor, never knew he was once engaged—to Miranda. With Half Moon Bay’s gossip mill running full tilt, J.J. turns to her fellow dinner club members to help fish for clues and keep herself out of hot water…

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jennifer “J.J.” Tanner and Skye Drake do their best to “Make It Happen”. They are event planners that can handle anything. Even finding a dead body at your event. J.J.’s latest event, a casino night aboard a cruise ship was sailing right along until one of the emcees is found dead on the main deck. The D.J., Connor Mac appears to be the prime suspect but it could have been anyone on the boat, including J.J. She gets the Culinary Capers Dinner Club right on the case.  They need to clear both Connor and J. J. Hopefully, they can Make It Happen!

I love the idea of the Culinary Capers Dinner Club. Each month a member chooses a cookbook for that month’s dinner. Everyone picks a dish from the book and they get together to discuss food and every other topic you can imagine. This month’s cookbook was The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook: Wickedly Good Meals and Desserts to Die For and each member was asked to read a book by the author whose dish they had chosen for the dinner.  That sound like so much fun to me. Like J.J. I am not much of a cook but would love to belong to a group like this.

The characters in this story are so well written. They are fun and very engaging. I like the way they take on a mystery. Each seems to have their own strength and insight. They share the information and talk through their theories. With a police officer as part of the group and a detective that wants to get to know J.J. a whole lot better, the police are kept in the loop about almost everything they find too.

Ms. Wiken wraps her characters in a fantastic mystery. Dropping clues like breadcrumbs for her readers to follow right along with them. The murder happens right away and I was tuned right in, only putting the book down because my eyes refused to stay open. Thankfully it was the weekend so I could get right back into it almost a soon as I woke up. The author does have a writing style that will have you saying “just one chapter”, “okay, just one more chapter”, “really, just one more chapter” late into the night.

Oh, and those dishes that had my mouth watering while reading about them. . . yes, the recipes are in the back of the book!

This culinary cozy was absolutely delicious and highly recommended.

Getting used to life back home in Deer Park, North Carolina, Sydney McCall and her right-hand tabby, Toby, are helping her sister Kat run the local animal shelter. Syd and Kat are all excited about the prospect of the shelter’s newest fundraiser: shopping channel queen Ulla Townsend. Shelter admin Maggie Shayne vehemently refuses to have anything to do with the woman, but the fundraiser ensues as planned. That is, until Ulla turns up dead in the middle of the event.

The cause of death is determined to be an allergic reaction, but Syd and Toby are sniffing out something fishy. When Syd met Ulla, it was clear she was distasteful and rude. And right before the event, Syd spotted some behind-the-scenes drama between Ulla and her manager. As they begin to investigate, they realize there is no shortage of suspects, and Maggie is at the top of the list.

Now Syd and Toby must claw their way to the truth before everything goes paws up at their animal shelter in Death by a Whisker by national bestselling author T. C. LoTempio.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Syd and her sister Kat are gearing up for another fundraiser for their Friendly Paws Animal Shelter. This time Ulla Townsend, shopping channel queen and former resident of Deer Park will be the special guest with a book signing. There will also be cats playing nearby that are all up for adoption.

Not everyone is excited about the guest of honor so when she is found dead in the bathroom in the middle of the event there are quite a few suspects including Maggie Shayne from the shelter. Seems the author/queen of shopping left behind some upset people behind when she left Deer Park and the people she has been working with lately aren’t her biggest fans either.  With a bit of help from her lovable tabby Toby, and her friend Leila, Syd purr-sues the truth to get Maggie off the hook and the real killer pawing around in prison.

This was a very entertaining read. Cat lovers, rejoice. The felines in this story are super special and I love the pop-up events Syd and Kat host to get these wonderful animals into their fur-ever homes.  I am so glad Syd has stayed in Deer Park to work at the shelter.

Ms. LoTempio creates fantastic characters, both 2-legged and 4-legged. They are immediately engaging and readers quickly become invested in their well being. She also gives us those characters that rub us the wrong way. Ulla is quite a diva, and the people she surrounds herself with have secrets, affairs that are not so secret and other reasons to get rid of the woman. They all make great suspects in her murder.

The story starts out slow to refresh the reader’s memory and introduces the new characters but after the body is found the pace really picks up and the pages quickly turning. I was patting myself on the back for figuring everything out only to have a twist and turn send my theory out with the kitty litter. But that is the joy of a cozy mystery, and the reason I love them.

Toby has found a place deep in my heart. His antics with Melvin the Marvelous Mouse made me laugh out loud, especially when taking the empty threats of his new person, Syd. She loves that cat and spoils him rotten, just as she should. 🙂

Cozy Wednesday with Miranda James – Author of Claws for Concern (Cat in the Stacks Mystery) – #GuestPost #Review #Giveaway @BerkleyMystery

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so happy to welcome Miranda James to Escape With Dollycas!

Old Sins

By Miranda James
(Post provided by publicist.)

I don’t really know where my nearly lifelong interest in history started. I do remember that, when I got my first library card at the age of eight, the first book I checked out was a juvenile biography of Abraham Lincoln. I went on to read many, many more of those juvenile biographies, and then I moved on to Greek and Roman mythology. Later on, as a teenager, I began reading historical fiction of various flavors – everything from historical romances to romantic suspense and straight historical fiction. If it was set in the past – and particularly if it was set in England – I would give it a try. In college, I majored in history and even went on to get both a master’s degree and a Ph.D., emphasis on medieval history.

I think one of the main reasons I’m so fascinated by history is knowing that there are connections from the past to the present. Some are more clear-cut than others, but the connections are always there. There are connections on a grand scale as well as connections on a more intimate, definitely personal scale, like tracing one’s ancestors to see from whence you came.

These same connections are, for me, what makes a mystery plot interesting. What actions in the past are connected to events in the present? Did one event, an action by a single person, set the course that ended in a murder? Or perhaps several murders?

These are the questions at the root of every story in the “Cat in the Stacks” series. In the latest book, Claws for Concern, those actions lie twenty years in the past. Four people, two adults, and two children were killed on a farm. The murderer was never brought to justice. Will Charlie and Diesel be able to identify the killer after all these years?

~Miranda

Thank you, Miranda, for visiting today!

Charlie Harris is busy enjoying his new grandson when a mysterious man with a connection to Charlie’s family starts visiting the library, bringing with him troubling questions about an unsolved murder…

Charlie may be a proud new grandfather, but he and Diesel still have work to do at Athena College and the small Mississippi town’s public library. He’s too busy to deal with true-crime writer Jack Pemberton, who wants Charlie as the subject of his latest book–and who won’t take no for an answer.

A more appealing proposition for Charlie is spending time helping a kind, elderly man navigates the library’s genealogical database. But he’s shocked when he learns that the visitor’s search is focused on a member of his own family: his late aunt’s husband.

Charlie befriends the man and considers inviting him to stay in his home, but he’s soon given reason to question that notion. Jack is certain that Charlie’s new houseguest was involved in a shocking homicide that took place years ago in a small town near Athena. As this cold case heats up, Charlie and Diesel have to uncover a killer who may already be too close to home…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

This is one of my favorite cozy series. That cat on the cover, Diesel, always makes me smile and now remember my own big kitty Wiley who passed away January 17. Diesel is a little bit more intuitive than Wiley was but he comes darn close.

This time Diesel and his person, Charlie Harris, take on a cold case when a man at the library asks for help just after telling Charlie he is the son of his late aunt’s husband. Charlie and Diesel are enjoying a new baby and fielding inquiries from a man that wants to write about all the mysteries Charlie has solved. While not interested in being the feature of a book, Charlie and the author team up to solve one together, even if it means putting his newly found relative behind bars.

I loved everything about this story. The mystery really didn’t take hold until about halfway through the book, but this reader was drawn in and entertained from page one. James’ writing style makes it feel like you are having a conversation with Charlie or watching everything right over his shoulder. When the mystery is revealed Charlie takes us along as he visits everyone that could have the answers he needs to solve it. When his daughter and son-in-law observe a crucial “accident” it gives Charlie what he needs to press for even more answers.

Miranda James is a fantastic storyteller. Her characters are engaging and feel like friends or neighbors you like to spend a lot of time with. Charlie relationship with Helen Louise is moving along nicely now that she is getting more help at her restaurant. His daughter recently gave birth to his first grandchild and his son’s wife is due soon. Diesel is already a good baby minder, he feels it is his job to watch over that child and alert everyone if the baby barely makes a sound. Charlie’s housemates are also top-notch and of course his housekeeper Azalea is the one who keeps everyone in line.

This is a wonderful addition to this series. I do recommend you start at the beginning but this story does stand on its own.

If you are looking for a comfortable, cozy mystery to curl up with, look no further than Claws for Concern, or any other Miranda James story.

Crew Costa isn’t Irish, but for a kid from the school of hard knocks, he’s had the luck of the Irish with his chain of faux-Irish pubs, O’Shaughnessy’s Shenanigans. Number 13 is set to open in time for St. Patrick’s Day. The Bronx is already the site of several authentic Irish pubs, including The Lion O’Brien. Started by Liam O’Brien, the pub is now managed by his youngest daughter Siobhan, but only after her four older brothers refused the job. Now Siobhan has to prove she is worthy.

Siobhan falls for Crew, literally, after they collide while he is moving into her apartment building. Their attraction is immediate and powerful, but they are rivals. Siobhan is counting on the Lion winning the St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl, which Crew has entered as well. The lead-up to the event involves “pranking” your competition, and the older pubs band together against the gaudy newcomer, with its McNaughty the Leprechaun and other cultural stereotypes. For Crew and Siobhan, the pranking quickly gets personal and expensive.

Siobhan and Crew can’t resist the electricity between them, but can Siobhan trust this streetwise charmer? Can Crew trust this daddy’s girl whose overriding passion is her pub? And will the rage brewing among the other pub owners put their lives in danger?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am been anxiously awaiting the next book in this series and I must say it was well worth the wait.

After her brother turned down managing the family pub, the Lion O’Brien, Siobhan takes over the reins. Her father isn’t sure this is the right move but with his recent health scare, he doesn’t have much of a choice. Her first decision is to join the St. Patrick’s Day Pub Crawl. A unique event where patrons travel from pub to pub in teams, drinking, eating and answering trivia questions. She sees it as a fun community event that will draw new customers to the Lion. Then she finds out a chain pub is joining in this year. Crew Costa is set to open is 13th O’Shaughnessy’s Shenanigans and plans to use the Crawl as his grand opening. The man doesn’t have one drop of Irish blood in his body so the other pub owners are quite upset to have him joining their party. So they come together to use the traditional pranking that leads up to the crawl to force him and his bar out of the St. Patty’s Day event.

There is only one problem. Siobhan finds herself drawn to Crew. The romantic tension just radiates between them. Can they seriously be headed for a relationship? or is it just a fun fling leading up to the holiday? Will their relationship make them targets of the pub owners, putting themselves in danger?

Adding romance to the suspense is always good in my book.

We met the O’Brien’s in the first book of this series, Beginner’s Luck. I was captivated by this family right away. I do have a little Irish in my blood and Siobhan’s parents remind me a little bit of my own. Eoin and his wife Vivian are back, newlyweds expecting their first child. The other brothers all make appearances too, but this is Siohban’s story. She is handling her new pub duties very well until she meets Crew Costa and the crawl pranks start. Some causing some costly damage and making her father very unhappy. Crew is a handsome man who had a little criminal activity in his past. That and a little luck got him to where he is today, owning a chain of pubs. The electricity between them is evident immediately, but they are rivals, Siobhan is dedicated to her family, he is rarely in one place for more than a few weeks. They are both such strong people, can they have a real meaningful relationship.

Again Ms. Scott sets the perfect pace to get us invested in her characters. We get to know them so well while she draws us in and then things get not only romantic but suspenseful. Someone is carrying these pranks too far, putting lives in danger. But who is it? I was suspecting everyone right up until the culprit was finally revealed.

I am impressed with the author’s talent to mix her steamy romances with a nice suspenseful mystery and keeping a comfortable balance between the two. She gives her readers a very entertaining story.

Meetings 1 and 2 with the Obrien’s have both been perfect escapes. I am ready for visit 3, If we are lucky we won’t have to wait too long.

One of the jewels of Best of Luck for me was the development of the relationship between Siobhan and Crew. This is no run-of-the-mill boy-meets-girl story.

What a great romance novel! . . . The Irish details are enchanting but when added to the romance it really added a nice twist.

A debut novel set against a background of hospital rounds and life-or-death decisions that pulses with humor and empathy and explores the heart’s capacity for forgiveness…

Zadie Anson and Emma Colley have been best friends since their early twenties when they first began navigating serious romantic relationships amid the intensity of medical school. Now they’re happily married wives and mothers with successful careers–Zadie as a pediatric cardiologist and Emma as a trauma surgeon. Their lives in Charlotte, North Carolina are chaotic but fulfilling until the return of a former colleague unearths a secret one of them has been harboring for years.

As chief resident, Nick Xenokostas was the center of Zadie’s life–both professionally and personally–throughout a tragic chain of events in her third year of medical school that she has long since put behind her. Nick’s unexpected reappearance during a time of new professional crisis shocks both women into a deeper look at the difficult choices they made at the beginning of their careers. As it becomes evident that Emma must have known more than she revealed about circumstances that nearly derailed both their lives, Zadie starts to question everything she thought she knew about her closest friend.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kimmery Martin takes us into the lives of best friends Zadie Anson and Emma Colley. She alternates between their points of view and the present and the past. Emma, a trauma surgeon, and Zadie, a pediatric cardiologist, have faced grueling schedules to get to where they are in their lives, married with families and successful careers. Then Nick Xenokostas, Dr. X,  transfers to North Carolina and turns their lives upside down. That third year of medical school comes back to haunt them and when secrets are revealed it could rip these two best friends apart.

I dove right into this story thinking it would be a combination of Grey’s Anatomy and other medical television dramas, but it was so much more. You know immediately the author is a physician by all the details she brings to this story. From medical terms to the struggle medical school, residency and beyond can be. I drank it all in and was riveted by Zadie and Emma’s stories. These characters were very realistic in both the bond they have and the lives they have created for themselves.

The underlying drama and tension runs throughout the story with little humorous breaks usually by Zadie’s 3-year-old Delaney. Her “Hi, beloved dear!” always broke through and made me smile. I was following along closely knowing something major had taken place in these women’s lives. Something they had tried to forget about. But when the event was revealed I became totally overwhelmed. Not exactly the same as an event that rocked my life but close enough that I had to stop reading for some time before I could pick it back up again. I still had to skip or just skim a few pages but I had to see how the story ended. I am so glad I did because there was yet another shocking twist that I didn’t see coming.

I was moved by this novel. I can’t believe it is the author’s debut. She is an excellent writer, she carries off the switching points of view and times, along with all the medical jargon so well. Her descriptive style puts readers right into each moment. Except for the one point I mentioned above I totally enjoyed the story, and that is on me. If you haven’t dealt with a similar traumatic event, you will absolutely love this story.

I am excited by this author and can’t wait to see what she writes next.

Cozy Wednesday with Jeanne Quigley – Author of Cast for Murder (Veronica Walsh Mystery) #GuestPost / #Review / #Giveaway

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am so happy to welcome back Jeanne Quigley to Escapes With Dollycas!

Thank you, Lori, for inviting me to introduce the new Veronica Walsh mystery to your readers. Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

One of the joys of writing is the opportunity it gives me to weave my interests into a story. Years of watching soap operas inspired the creation of Veronica Walsh, the star of my cozy mystery series, and my childhood vacations in the Adirondacks led me to set the series in a fictional town in that beautiful region of New York.

The theater, particularly the work behind-the-scenes, is another longtime fascination of mine. I marvel at how a group of talented people, from the playwright, director, and choreographer to the set designers, musicians, and actors, can transform a bare stage into whatever world the playwright imagined and transport an audience to a 1905 Paris opera house, a bachelor pad in 1960s New York, or the eighteenth century for a fresh take on the life of a Founding Father.

Since I’m not “in” the theater, I incorporated its appeal into the plot of my new mystery, Cast for Murder. In the third cozy starring Veronica Walsh, I staged a production of Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit at the Barton Community Theater, the amateur playhouse in Veronica’s hometown. I assembled a diverse cast of actors, appointed a production manager and stage manager, and handed the directorial reins to the theater’s founder, Gigi Swanson. I even built the actual theater and it took just one paragraph to do it.

Veronica, a retired soap opera actress, slides easily into the part of Coward’s wacky medium, Madame Arcati. Veronica doesn’t care that she’s performing alongside amateurs and won’t be paid (not even scale) for her part, or that she has to venture into the frigid winter nights of Barton to attend rehearsals. She’s out of retirement and acting again!

It’s all fabulous until the backstage drama begins after Veronica finds Gigi shot dead behind the theater. It doesn’t take long for Veronica to assume a second role she’s not as excited to play: amateur sleuth. She’s developed a skill for solving murders and has earned a fame for it she’d rather not have.

Gigi’s murder introduces Veronica to a whole new cast of characters, a lineup of murder suspects who don’t follow a script. Whitney, Gigi’s business partner, assumes the role of diva and plays it to the hilt. There’s Kenny, a former volunteer at the theater who would fit well in the cast of Twelve Angry Men. Julia is the perfect ingénue, all wide eyes, and batting eyelashes. But is it all an act, a guise put on to cover a little case of guilt? Finally, Gigi’s husband, Zach Townsend, is the perfect leading man: tall, dark, and handsome. Is he also a murderer?

Plus there’s a cameo by a real-life Madame Arcati. Does she have the psychic ability to help Veronica solve the murder, or is she only a good reference for Veronica to method act her way through her starring role?

The stage is set for a comic play turned into a murder mystery. Grab a front row seat and enjoy the show!

~Jeanne

Thank you, Jeanne, for stopping by today!

Now here is my review of Cast for Murder.

Former soap opera actress Veronica Walsh is recovering from her first holiday season in the retail world when she is pulled from retirement to star in a community production of Blithe Spirit. Delighted to play the part of a medium, Veronica must soon also assume the role of amateur sleuth when she finds the play’s director shot dead behind the theater.

Teaming with stage manager Sophie Morrissey, Veronica’s hunt for clues to the murder of Gigi Swanson leads her to a cast of colorful behind-the-scenes characters and a stunning Act Three finale. Will it be a triumph for Veronica, or will the curtain close on more than her career?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Veronica Walsh has been asked to come out of retirement to play the medium in a local community theater production. It sounds like fun so she accepts only to find the director has been murdered soon after rehearsals begin. She and Sophie, the stage manager, find the body and soon are cast in their own investigation. Will they make it to the final act or will they and the play close early?

Working in community theater the cast and crew get close. This group has been fortunate to find a family so interested in their productions that they have turned an old barn and a nearby building into a theater and office for the group. Of course, it helps that a member of the family is the director. That is until she ends up dead.

Ms. Quigley has created quite a cast of characters for this story. The Townsend family owns the Gold and Country Club. A converted barn on the property is used for not only theatre productions, but weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and other large parties. It sounds like a beautiful building. Gigi Swanson’s in-laws own the place and when she is murdered, her husband and his parents become murder suspects and so does Veronica and other members of the cast. These characters continue to evolve throughout the story as Veronica digs into them and their backgrounds as she tries to find the killer.

The mystery was so well plotted, it left me guessing right up to the end. I did like that Veronica reported back to the police anything she found out. This doesn’t happen often in this genre. Clues led them both on a very surprising path but Veronica found herself right in the line of fire.

The flow of the story had a slow build as suspects were eliminated but the tension took hold as the real killer was revealed. Someone I had ruled out earlier. Nicely played, Ms. Quigley.

The author has penned an excellent mystery with just a touch of romance. Her relationship with Mark is moving at a nice pace.

For me, a “perfect escape”.

This book can be read on its own but it’s more fun if you get to know Veronica from the beginning.

For country-store owner Robbie Jordan, the National Maple Syrup Festival is a sweet escape from late-winter in South Lick, Indiana—until murder saps the life out of the celebration . . .

As Robbie arranges a breakfast-themed cook-off at Pans ‘N Pancakes, visitors pour into Brown County for the annual maple extravaganza. Unfortunately, that includes Professor Connolly, a know-it-all academic from Boston who makes enemies everywhere he goes—and this time, bad manners prove deadly. Soon after clashing with several scientists at a maple tree panel, the professor is found dead outside a sugar shack, stabbed to death by a local restaurateur’s knife. When an innocent woman gets dragged into the investigation and a biologist mysteriously disappears, Robbie drops her winning maple biscuits to search for answers. But can she help police crack the case before another victim is caught in a sticky situation with a killer?

Recipes Included

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We arrive in South Lick just in time for the 5th Annual National Maple Syrup Festival. The cook-off will be held at Pans ‘N Pancakes and Robbie is excited about her maple flavored entry, Maple Curry Biscuits. There is also a conference on maple tree science with many professors taking part. Some of them will also be judging the cook-off. Professor Warren Connolly from Boston is one of the judges. Robbie finds he not well liked by his fellow academics. When the man is found dead at another festival event, stabbed with a chef’s knife that happens to belong to Robbie’s friend and her employee’s father, a research biochemist disappears Robbie finds herself trying to find a missing person and a murderer. Could they both be the same person?

Robbie is running her butt off quite literally in this story. One worker is searching for his dad and her assistant Danna injured herself at a volleyball tournament so she is unable to work. Visitors are pouring into town and into Pans ‘N Pancakes and most of the time Robbie is doing the cooking, the waitressing, and bussing the tables. Her plate is overflowing and she doesn’t have much time to investigate anything, but she does and gets herself into some mighty stick situations too.

I have enjoyed this series from the start. Ms. Day has created wonderful characters. The dialect of the area and the dialogue including some authentic expressions make these stories so much fun to read.

The pacing is swift and so much happens within these pages that is very difficult to put the book down. There was a little shakeup in the police department. The new/old investigating detective is very unique. Buck is back with his overly hearty appetite to keep Robbie in the loop of the investigation as much as he can. The suspect pool isn’t too deep but they all have a motive in one way or another so it wasn’t an easy mystery to solve.

I have to mention the setting at Pans ‘N Pancakes. I have a clear picture of it in my head, not sure how truly accurate it is, but a place that serves food like Robbie does, decked out with all kinds of old kitchen gadgets sounds like my kind of place. She is also adding rooms to the place and her first guest should be arriving in the next book. It is definitely a place I would love to visit.
