When Deputy Coroner Mattie Winston and her boss/best friend, Izzy, are called to the home of waitress and part-time model Shannon Tolliver, they find the ghoulish Halloween decorations a bit too authentic. Among the fake blood and skeletons is the corpse of Shannon herself. Since the whole town knows Shannon recently had a very public spat with her estranged husband, Erik, he’s suspect #1. But Mattie happens to know Erik truly loved his wife, and is simply incapable of the brutal act-even if he owns the exact same caliber handgun as the murder weapon. . .

Determined to unearth the truth, Mattie puts her scalpel-sharp medical skills to work, and digs a little deeper. What she uncovers is stranger than anyone could have imagined. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I now have another author in addition to Julie Mulhern that makes me laugh out loud so much my family thinks I am losing it. The first book in this series, Working Stiff, made me laugh a lot but this one had me laughing from start to finish.

Former nurse now assistant medical examiner Mattie Winston is a hoot and a half. In this story Mattie gets called away from a blind date to a residence that has taken their Halloween decorations very seriously. Unfortunately one of the dead bodies in the yard is real, part-time model and waitress Shannon Tolliver has died surrounded by her fake tombstones and skeletons. Separated from her husband, he becomes the prime suspect. Maddie’s gut tells her he didn’t do it. She is going to use her new job to dig into the case on her own. Maddie is also called to the site of a car accident in this book.  Her arrival is one of the hysterical moments I mentioned above.

The story picks up almost where the last one leaves off. Maddie has left her husband, the doctor and has taken up residence in her boss/best friend’s guest house. She gets into an accident with her car and not wanting to ask her husband for help getting a new vehicle she ends up making a very interesting choice in her mode of transportation. There is still a growing romantic tension between Maddie and Detective Steve Hurley. Their dialogues are priceless. Maddie reminds me of Lucille Ball/Ricardo (I Love Lucy). You know how Lucy would just get herself in situations where she had the best intentions where everything went wrong and that were sidesplitting funny. Maddie is just like that.

Along with all the humor there is a very well plotted mystery they brings in all kinds of secondary characters. They are all very fleshed out and unique and run the gambit of nice to crazy. The story twists and turns with odd connections that have to mean something. This was a tough one to solve and I was totally wrong. The secondary plot line almost overtakes the main one due to the characters involved and I loved the way that part of the story was wrapped up.

Murder, mayhem, romance, a Wisconsin setting, and a huge dose of humor have got me addicted to this series. I have already placed my order for book #3, Frozen Stiff, and will be getting the rest of the series too.

I loved this story but it does cross over some cozy norms by containing explicit language and some coarse and a little gross moments, but dead bodies being found and examined is not all wine and roses. So this book may not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you are a fan of Lucille Ball and Stephanie Plum these books are right up your alley.

When Mattie Winston catches her husband Dr. David Winston receiving some very special loving care from R.N. Karen Owenby, she quits her job and moves out. Mattie’s best friend Izzy offers her a place to stay and suggests she’d be a natural as deputy coroner. Now, instead of taking patients’ pulses, Mattie’s weighing their hearts and livers.

But Mattie’s first homicide call turns out to be for none other than Nurse Karen, and even though she saw her ex in a heated argument with the newly deceased the night before, she refuses to believe David could be a killer. Keeping mum about what she saw, Mattie is also left speechless by the sight of hunky Detective Steve Hurley. . .

From learning the ropes on her new job to sorting out her feelings about her ex and dealing with her growing attraction to Detective Hurley, Mattie’s in deep water and in danger of sinking quickly, especially when she places herself dead center in the path of a desperate–yet determined–killer. . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am late to the party on this series and am kicking myself.

Dr. David Winston cheated on his wife R.N. Mattie Winston and she has moved out of their house and quit her job. She caught him and R.N. Karen Owenby getting very cozy with each other in an operating room. An operating room she worked in with her husband. Her friend Izzy offers her a roof over her head and a job as his new deputy coroner. It will take some getting used to, dead patients instead live ones, but she is determined to make it on her own.

Nervous about her first homicide, which Izzy pulled her out of bed for, she is positively floored when the body is none other than R.N. Karen Owenby. The woman messing around with her husband and the woman she saw him have an argument with not too many hours ago. She also meets Detective Steve Hurley, who is a definite distraction for Mattie.

So she has 2 men on her mind, David couldn’t have killed Karen, could he? and the handsome detective she would like to get to know better. She also is meeting her new coworkers and her new job. She may be in the killer’s sights too, hopefully she won’t end up being the next stiff in the morgue.

I loved this story and I loved Mattie. Her life gets turned upside down, but she picks herself up, dusts herself off and gets on with her life. With a little help from her friends she carries on, even overstepping the requirements of her new job to do a little sleuthing on her own. Izzy and his partner play key roles and they are wonderfully written. I could almost feel the heat between Mattie and Steve burning up the pages. This is going to be an interesting relationship.

The plot was complex with clever twists. I followed each clue right along with Mattie and figured it out mere moments before she did.

The dialogue between the characters was so realistic and the situations were as well. I enjoy that this series is set not too far from where I reside. The local references warmed by heart.

What I did not expect were the laugh out loud funny moments, there were quite a few. I even had my own “spit – take”. Do not read this story and drink at the same time. Luckily my Kindle survived the experience.

I may have come late to this series but I hope to catch up quickly. I can’t wait to dive into Scared Stiff. It is set at Halloween, so I should have read it last month, but I sure am not going to wait for next year 🙂 You may be seeing my review next week.

#FlashbackFriday / #ReviewRewind / #Giveaway -Crime and Catnip (A Nick and Nora Mystery) by T.C. LoTempio @BerkleyMystery

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.
Another book that was waiting on my Kindle.

I did it again, scheduled myself to read too many books this week. So today I am doing REVIEW REWIND on a favorite. Sadly, I believe it is the last book in the series.

crime-and-catnip

Crime and Catnip (A Nick and Nora Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – California
Berkley Prime Crime (December 6, 2016)

Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-0425270226

Synopsis

Crime and Catnip by T. C. LoTempio – Nick and Nora aren’t just pussyfooting around this time as they deal with a missing person’s case and murder.

While catering a gala for the Cruz Museum, Nora Charles agrees to look into the disappearance of director Violet Crenshaw’s niece, a case previously undertaken by her frisky feline friend Nick’s former owner, a private eye whose whereabouts are also currently unknown.

As Nora and her curious cat Nick pull at the string of clues, they begin to unravel a twisted tale of coded messages, theft, false identities, murder, and international espionage. Nora dares to hope that the labyrinth of leads will not only help them locate the missing young woman, but also solve the disappearance of the detective. That’s if Nora can stay alive long enough to find him…

INCLUDES DELICIOUS SANDWICH RECIPES

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Nick and Nora are back for the 3rd story in this series and they have their hands/paws full. Nora is still trying to track down human Nick, she is catering a huge gala and the director of the event has asked her to continue the case human Nick was on when he disappeared, and then of course there is a dead body found at the gala and maybe some missing jewels. Could all these things be tied together? You will have to read the book to find out.

Ms. LoTempio has written a very complex mystery for us to solve. Thankfully Nick, the cat, is there to help both us and Nora find and follow all the clues. He is one smart feline. I still think there is so much more to his story but events in this book have me rethinking my original theory. He and Nora along with Nick’s (the human) old partner have to work out secret codes that may lead to international espionage plus Nick (the cat) uses his unique talents to communicate with Nora and help her out of a few dicey situations. If she would just share her info with the hunky law enforcement officers that are prominent in her life before she goes too far… instead of after her life would be a bit safer. I do love the way they show up just after the “nick” of time.  All of these characters are so fun and unique.

One thing I have learned reading this series is the author loves to twist things up as much as she can. That is the reason that once you start reading it is very hard to stop. This one kept me up extra late and I needed a midnight snack too.

Nora runs her mother’s sandwich shop where she serves sandwiches named after actors and actresses. At the end of this book you will find recipes for the Hugh Jackman Sub and the Emma Stone Capri Sandwich, and many others are described within the story. My mouth was watering.

I love this series and each new story quickly becomes my favorite. There is a cliffhanger at the end that leaves me so excited for the next story to be released. Should be out in November or December of 2017. A whole year…I don’t like it but I can make it because I know good things come to those who wait. 🙂

#FlashbackFriday – Wicked Witch Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery Series) by Leslie Meier #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review

from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.
I am determined to get caught up on this series!

Wicked Witch Murder (A Lucy Stone Mystery Series)

When the bewitching Diana Ravenscroft comes to quiet Tinker’s Cove and opens Solstice, a quaint little shop offering everything from jewelry to psychic readings, Lucy Stone writes her off as eccentric but harmless. Even after Diana gives her a disturbingly accurate reading, Lucy can’t help but befriend the newcomer. But not everyone in town is so enchanted. And when Lucy stumbles upon a dead body near her home, she can’t shake the feeling that something sinister is lurking in the crisp October air. . .

Convinced Diana is an evil witch, prominent businessman Ike Stoughton blames her for a series of recent misfortunes, including Lucy’s gruesome discovery and his own wife’s death, and rallies the townsfolk against her. But after Lucy learns the murder victim was a magician and close friend of Diana’s, she starts to wonder who’s really stirring up a cauldron of trouble. By Halloween, her suspicions lead her to a deadly web of secrets–and a spine-chilling brush with the things that go bump in the night. . .

Dollycas’s  Thoughts

There’s a witch or two or maybe more in Tinker’s Cove. Diana Ravenscroft has opened a unique shop, Solstice, and it is not getting rave reviews from many in town. The most vocal is Ike Stoughton. He thinks Diana has cursed his family and his home. When Lucy finds a dead body she finds herself both leery of Diana but willing to accept a little protection from her. Things start to escalate the closer we get to Halloween and Lucy finds herself in a deadly situation.

Leslie Stone mixes murder and magic in a bewitching mystery. The book does span several months so we can learn about Diana and her coven and the way the town reacts to the new element in the midst. Ike Stoughton also moves to town and becomes Lucy’s neighbor. Something eerie is going on at that house and with his family and Lucy treads lightly at first but grows more concerned as the story continues.

The new characters in this installment are intriguing, different, and some just plain scary. Partnered with the series regulars an entertaining story emerges. Lucy has more courage than I will ever have.  Using her part time job at the Pennysaver she interviews all the people connected to the case. Diana Ravenscroft also tries to teach her about Wicca, although she is skeptical her daughters are interested so she needs to know as much as she can.

A lot happens within these pages including a huge storm. There are several twists that turn the story in so many directions. At times is felt just a little disjointed. I think that was because the story took place over so many months.

Be sure to check out the recipes in the back of the book perfect for this Halloween.

#FlashbackFriday – In The Stars (Amber Reed Mystery) by Zanna Mackenzie – 20 Quick Questions / #Review – Free Book – Great Escapes Tour

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

I was so excited when Zanna contacted me about a book tour for this series. This book was already waiting for my on my Kindle.

In The Stars: A Humorous Romantic Mystery (Amber Reed Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – United Kingdom
Self Published
Publication Date: December 11, 2014
Print Length: 364 pages
ASIN: B00QXFNP62

One desperate phone call is all it takes to turn Amber’s previously dull day into one speeding scarily out of control!

Amber Reed’s at work making up the horoscopes for the local newspaper and wishing for some excitement in her life, when she gets a phone call offering her just that.

Plunged into the middle of a celebrity murder investigation she’s desperately trying to convince the scarily handsome special agent assigned to solve the case that she can help him catch the killer.

Amber’s soon battling something far more dangerous than she could ever have imagined – and it has nothing to do with the equally scary chemistry fizzing between her and special agent Charlie.

Is it Amber’s wish for more excitement in her life which has landed her in big trouble – or is her fate written in the stars?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Amber Reed is still good friends with her ex. When his brother is found dead he calls for a celebrity murder investigation and asks Amber to help the investigator assigned to the case. The investigator is not happy but knows she is going to follow him no matter where he goes so he concedes to letting her tag along. Amber doesn’t know why but she is very attracted to this investigator and the more time they spend together the closer they get. As their romance heats us so does the danger. Is a life for them together “in the stars”? Will they survive this investigation and catch the killer?

If you like your mysteries balanced by romance and humor this is the perfect story for you.

Zanna Mackenzie has created some truly delightful characters in Amber and Charlie. Each a little wary of each other at first, their attraction progresses pretty rapidly. Amber is strong and independent and feels she doesn’t need a man to protect her. That gets her into some dicey situations. Charlie takes his job very seriously and finds himself not only trying to solve his case but keep Amber out of trouble too. Their relationship had me shaking my head, laughing out loud and scared for them, sometimes all on the same page.

The story has some nice twists making the story very exciting.  Some of the people involved hold things back to save themselves and without all the details the danger escalates. Turns out we are dealing with much more than murder.

I was very entertained by this story. The mystery was very well written, the characters are very engaging (their romance is G-rated) and there are several hilarious moments. I look forward to reading more books in this series.

Twenty Quick Questions with Zanna Mackenzie

Favorite Color – Purple, well a lilac/ pink kind of purple!

Favorite Candy – I don’t have much of a sweet tooth and tend to prefer savory items such as crisps (chips) rather than candy but I do have a weakness for things like Nutella – we rarely buy it as I would end up eating the whole jar in a day or two!

Favorite Snack – Cheese! I have a digestive complaint which means I have to limit cheese on a rotation diet basis as I cannot digest proteins easily. In theory I’m only supposed to eat cheese twice a week with a three day gap between each serving but I confess it doesn’t always happen that way…

Favorite Soft Drink – I’ve never been a huge fan of fizzy drinks but I love Fentiman’s old fashioned ginger beer and also pure apple juice.

Favorite Hard Drink – I don’t drink alcohol because I’ve never much liked the taste of wines or spirits, even when I was younger.

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor – Coconut or good old proper vanilla.

Favorite Movie – Oooh, that’s a tough one. I have so many! I love movies, mostly romantic comedies. If pushed I could maybe narrow it down to three – am I allowed to do that or is it a bit of cheat? Okay, here’s my three – Walking On Sunshine (I adore music and dance films) / Leap Year (stunning scenery and I’m a fan of Amy Adams) and Serendipity (a lovely escapist movie with some great music).

Favorite TV Show – Ooh, another tough one! I’m prone to swapping and changing on this depending on mood/time of year/ what’s on the TV. At the moment it is Chesapeake Shores on Netflix. We have a bookshelf full of DVDs from series we have watched in the past and loved and we choose a series to watch right from start to finish. We have things like the fabulous Brothers & Sisters (we’re working our way through this at the moment and are on series 3 of 5). We recently finished Pan Am (only one series made of this wonderful programme for some reason) and are planning on moving on to Hart Of Dixie next. I enjoy sitcoms too, especially Last Man Standing.

Favorite Book – Oh no, these questions are getting harder! As with TV stuff, I have favorite’s in different genres as I read across romance, chick lit, cozy mystery, chick lit mystery, cozy paranormal mystery and romantic suspense. My favorite genre is romantic comedy mystery (which is the genre I also write in) and I enjoy books by people like Camilla Chafer, Gemma Halliday and Stephanie Bond but if I can really only choose one then it would probably be Martina Reilley’s Even Better Than The Real Thing. It’s set in Ireland and Florida and tells the story of a woman who gets unknowingly caught up in art fraud. It’s a romantic comedy mystery.

Favorite Fictional Character – probably Sophie from Kate Johnson’s Sophie Green Mysteries. She has many flaws but is funny and feisty and great fun to read about.

Favorite Super Hero – Not sure I have one! Maybe The Flash from the TV series of the same name. Reason? He seems more ‘real’ than the others to me.

Favorite Singer/Group/Band – Sorry, I don’t have one particular favorite. I enjoy music of lots of types from lots of artists – such as Olly Murs (for upbeat dance numbers), Coldplay (for emotional numbers) and classical for relaxation.

Favorite Carnival Ride – I get motion sickness so avoid them all!

Favorite Spring Activity – Planting vegetables in the tiny veg plot in our garden; venturing outside with a coat, hat and gloves to walk the dogs, and enjoying a cup of tea and a spot of reading on the bench in the garden.

Favorite Summer Activity – Picking the aforementioned fruit and veg in the garden once it’s ready.

Favorite Fall Activity – Heading to the woodlands to enjoy the amazing leaf colours.

Favorite Winter Activity – Lighting some candles and cuddling up on the sofa with the family underneath some throws to watch something  blissfully escapist on the TV.

Favorite Place to Read – In bed, last thing at night, it’s my switch off and relax time.

Favorite Place to Write – In the garden with a notebook and pen.

Dream Vacation Destination – A deserted beach in the UK in winter, doesn’t matter where, though favorite spots are in Lincolnshire, Anglesey and south west Scotland. It will be freezing cold but wonderfully bracing. Follow a few hours of walking with a supper of cheese, biscuits and crisps (chips) in front of a real fire and relaxing. Wonderful…

About the Author

I live in the UK (Derbyshire/ Leicestershire border) with my husband, 5 dogs, a vegetable patch that’s home to far too many weeds and an ever expanding library of books waiting to be read

Being a freelance writer and editor of business publications is my ‘day job’ but, at every opportunity, I can be found scribbling down notes on scenes for whatever novel I’m working on. I love it when the characters in my novels take on minds of their own and start deviating from the original plot.

I enjoy walking the dogs, gardening and reading.

Danger and romance heat up the pages of this intriguing mystery.
~Laura’s Interests

Amber is a great heroine. She is very loyal to her friends, as evidenced by her undertaking to help out in the investigation into the murder of her college-boyfriend-turned-movie-heartthrob (Ennis’s) brother (Joel), even though it initially is out of her comfort zone and eventually downright dangerous!

Former police officer Abigail Mackenzie has made a fresh start as a beekeeper and farmer in picturesque Las Flores, California—but she never suspected her new hometown would prove to be abuzz with murder . . .

Only hours after Abby’s free-spirited friend, Fiona Mary Ryan, owner of Ancient Wisdom Botanicals, missed their lunch date, her body is found in a burning car—a tragic accident until the coroner’s report points to murder. Driven by her loyalty to her friend, and her deeply ingrained skills as a trained investigator, Abby sorts through suspects who seem to be sprouting up everywhere. Luckily, Abby isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty to smoke out a killer . . .

Includes farming tips and delicious recipes!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am excited to travel back to Las Flores, California for my second visit to the Henny Penny Farmette owned by Abigail Mackenzie.

After leaving the police force Abby has become a farmer/beekeeper but she still does private investigations on the side.  She is also remodeling her farmhouse as time and money permits. When her friend Fiona fails to show up for lunch at Abby’s farm, first she get a little testy but then she gets worried. Kat, her former partner, was at the farm for lunch too, but she is called away for a car fire, their friend Fiona appears to be the victim. Abby can’t help but get involved. When the investigation leads to a commune outside of town Abby get caught in a very dangerous situation. As if she doesn’t have enough bees in her bonnet her ex boyfriend, Clay has strolled back into town and expects to pick their relationship up right where they off. Bee-leive me she really doesn’t need to deal with this guy especially because she may have feelings for a couple of other men around town.

I have become a huge fan of Abigail Mackenzie. She knows everyone on the police force and they really don’t seem to mind too much when she helps them clear their cases. She is very observant and insightful but she sometimes forgets she no longer has a gun to protect herself. Nothing seems to hold her back. Back in the day, she would have been called a “gutsy broad”. Her love life is a bit of a mess but she really in too busy to evaluate that right now. Her growth throughout the story was a pleasure to see. I also am head over heals crazy about her dog.

All the other characters are very fleshed out and bee-lievable. Good or bad I had a good grasp of who they were and how they fit seamlessly into the story.

Meera Lester writes in a way the makes you almost feel as you are watching the mystery play out on television. Visualization was super easy. I was engaged in the story from the beginning to the end. The mystery was well conceived and there were plenty of suspects. Some of the clues were of the red herring variety but I enjoyed following all the clues very much. The pace was perfect for me.

I appreciated  the farming tips and recipes that started each chapter as well. In the e-book advance review copy they fell into place a bit clumsily, but I am sure they shine in the print editions.

I found  The Murder of a Queen Bee  to “bee” a first-class mystery, full of interesting characters, tempered with humor and just a little romance.

I am really excited to read the next book in this series. A Hive of Homicides hits stores later this month.

#FlashbackFriday – Mai Tai One On (The Tiki Goddess Mystery Series) by Jill Marie Landis – #Review / #Giveaway

Six months ago, if anyone would have told Em Johnson she’d end up divorced, broke, and running the dilapidated Tiki Goddess Bar on the magical North Shore of Kauai she would have told them to shove a swizzle stick up their okole. As if all that isn’t bad enough, when an obnoxious neighbor with a grudge is found dead in the Goddess luau pit, suspicion falls on Em and the rest of the Goddess staff. With the help of a quirky dance troupe of over-the-hill Hula Maidens, Em and the cast of characters must ban together to find the killer and solve the mystery before the next pupu party.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Doesn’t that cover just scream fun! and murder!

Em Johnson’s uncle owns Tiki Goddess Bar on the North Shore of Kauai. The Hula Maidens, a group of seniors who dance at the joint have written to Em and asked her to come because they are worried about her uncle’s memory, plus the place is losing money fast. With nothing to hold her on the mainland she hops a plane. She has been there are 6 months and some of her ideas have started to turn the place around. The jury is still out on her uncle.  But when one of the bar’s neighbors is found dead, in the Imu, (the pit where they cook the pigs for the luaus) Uncle Louie is the police’s prime suspect.

What really makes this book sing or I should say dance is its cast of quirky characters. Their antics had me in stitches from the first page until the last. The Hula Maidens are a hoot and Detective Roland is a fire dancer when he isn’t trying to put Uncle Louis or their new bartender behind bars. A new neighbor is quite flamboyant and the dead neighbor took obnoxious to a whole new level. There is also parrot named David Letterman, who is the taste tester for Uncle Louie’s new creations and he is a big fan on the television show Survivor. The ringmaster trying to hold this whole circus together is Em Johnson and while trying to protect the people she cares for she doesn’t always make the best decisions.

This series gets off to a nice start with not only a murder or two but also a kidnapping and a human femur bone found on a shelf. Everyone seems to be holding something back and those secrets lead in many different directions. Detective Roland seems to be around often but in addition to asking questions the Hula Maidens think he has romantic ideas about Em. She feels a little spark too, but until the case is solved she has no interest in the fire dancer, no matter how good he looks in that loin cloth.

I have never been to Hawaii and probably will never get there so I really enjoyed this little virtual escape. I will be back when I read book #2, Two to Mango.

If you like your cozy mysteries to include a nice slice of humor, fix yourself a mai tai and enjoy!

Flashback Friday – Tagged for Death (A Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mystery) by Sherry Harris #Review / #Giveaway

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books
I was not able to reviewwhen they were first released that have been screaming at mefrom my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Tagged for Death
(Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mysteries)

Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Massachusetts
Release Date – December 2, 2014
Kensington
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1617730177
Kindle ASIN: B00KFP7YSG

Starting your life over at age thirty-eight isn’t easy, but that’s what Sarah Winston finds herself facing when her husband CJ runs off with a 19-year-old temptress named Tiffany. Sarah’s self-prescribed therapy happily involves hitting all the garage and tag sales in and around her small town of Ellington, Massachusetts. If only she could turn her love for bargain hunting into a full-time career.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure

But after returning from a particularly successful day searching for yard sale treasures, Sarah finds a grisly surprise in one of her bags: a freshly bloodied shirt. . .that undoubtedly belongs to her ex, CJ, who now happens to be Ellington’s chief of police. If that’s not bad enough, it seems Tiffany has gone missing. Now it’s up to Sarah to prove that her cold-hearted ex is not a cold-blooded killer. . .

But finding that treasure can be murder.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Sarah Winston may be starting her life over after her husband, CJ cheated on her but she is still connected to several places and people from before her divorce. She stills spends time on the Fitch Air Force Base working at the thrift store. A perfect job because she loves hunting for bargains at garage sales and she donates several of her finds to the store. But one of her recent bargains, a bag of clothes, included a bloody shirt and she recognizes it. It is belongs to her ex, the new chief of police of Ellington. His “girlfriend” also happens to be missing and more blood has been found in her dorm room.  The investigation includes the security at the base too and CJ is their prime suspect. As mad as she is at CJ, Sarah knows he is not a killer and she is going to prove it.

What a fantastic story and introduction to these characters. You can tell the author is drawing from personal experiences, sans the murder/s of course 🙂

Sarah comes across as so genuine and I loved her almost obsession with garage sales. It is all about the negotiating and the deal she can get. When she took her friend with her and tried to teach her “the art of the deal”, it was hilarious. That friend could have been me. All the characters grew over the course of the story and there is so much more room for them to grow in this series.

The plot is very strong and filled with surprising twists. The connection to the Air Force Base was very appealing and the details of the workings of such a place was appreciated by this reader. I enjoyed solving the mystery right along with Sarah.

The garage sale tips were a nice addition and food for thought.

I am super exited to get caught up on this series.

Flashback Friday -Without a Doubt (A Carol Childs Mystery) by Nancy Cole Silverman – #Review / #Giveaway

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Without a Doubt (A Carol Childs Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – California
Henery Press (May 24, 2016)
Hardcover: 256 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635110289
Paperback: 258 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635110258
Kindle ASIN: B01C4LEFTE

As radio reporter Carol Childs investigates a series of Beverly Hills jewelry heists, she realizes her FBI boyfriend, Eric, is working the same case. Even worse, she may have inadvertently helped the suspect escape. The situation intensifies when the suspect calls the radio station during a live broadcast, baiting Carol deeper into the investigation.

In order for her to uncover the truth, Carol must choose between her job and her personal relationships. What started out as coincidence between Carol and Eric becomes a race for the facts—pitting them against one another—before the thieves can pull off a daring escape, leaving a trail of dead bodies behind, and taking the jewels with them.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Carol Childs in on assignment when she sees Eric, her FBI boyfriend, leave a jewelry store with another woman on his arm. Seconds later there is an explosion. Carol rushes to the scene to report on the situation for her radio station, KCHC Talk Radio. Her reports draws even more interest as a suspect calls the station during a live broadcast. The type of news has been frowned on my the station’s owners but Carol can’t let the story drop, especially when she learns Eric is working on the case. Their relationship takes a hit as they both dry to catch the criminals.

In this installment we meet the owner’s wife, Bunny, the one that only wants happy news on the station. She even takes over one of the programs. The manager tells Carol to stick right by Bunny’s side but Bunny informs Carol her help is not needed. But Bunny may have bitten off more that she can chew.

Again the author has introduced some interesting characters into Carol’s world. With each story we get to know Carol a little better and I find myself liking her more and more.  She is a strong character driven by her job or the job she is striving to get but still takes time when her son needs her. She is smart and savvy and just reckless enough to get herself into trouble. Her relationship with Eric is a little rocky because well the other woman and she wants to know things about the investigation he just can’t reveal.

This was an amazing fast read due the pacing of the plot. Driven by jewel thefts and dead bodies the pages were just flying. The behind the scenes look at the radio station and virtual tours around Beverly Hills added nicely to the story. I read it all in one sitting, I wanted to figure things out almost as much as Carol.

A very entertaining book!

I will be reviewing the next book Room For Doubt soon.

Flashback Friday – Peril by Ponytail (The Bad Hair Day Mysteries) by Nancy J. Cohen – #Review / #Giveaway

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Peril by Ponytail (A Bad Hair Day Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
12th in Series
Setting – Arizona
Five Star Publishing (September 16, 2015)
Hardcover: 285 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1432830984
Kindle ASIN: B015ESSHV6

Hoping for a romantic honeymoon at an Arizona dude ranch, hairstylist Marla Vail and her husband Dalton arrive to find a series of mishaps plaguing the resort. A nearby ghost town is suffering similar problems. Is it mere coincidence that Dalton’s Uncle Raymond owns both properties? When Raymond asks for their help in finding the culprit, Marla and Dalton eagerly accept. Then news of a local forest ranger’s death raises the stakes. With sleuthing more natural to Marla than horseback riding, she delves into the investigation. But as she digs deeper, she discovers skeletons in the family closet. Someone means to drive Raymond out of business, and the reason may be linked to his past misdeeds. Raymond isn’t the only one with secrets. The trail leads Marla from an environmental activist group to saguaro poachers to water rights proponents to an abandoned copper mine beneath the ghost town. She’d better saddle up, rein in the clues, and find the killer before she becomes the next spirit inhabiting the haunted hillside.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Finding time in their busy lives for a honeymoon wasn’t easy but Marla and Dalton head to an Arizona dude ranch when his cousin asks for help promising them a wonderful honeymoon getaway. They arrive to learn the ranch and a nearby ghost town renovation have had a run of bad luck, at least that is what everyone hopes. Both properties are owned by Dalton’s Uncle Raymond. Just as Marla and Dalton arrive they learn a local forest ranger’s body has been found just off a trail he was very familiar with. Accident, maybe but added to all the other mishaps Marla and Dalton start to investigate and decide to follow wherever the trail may lead, even underground if necessary.

Experiencing this trip to a dude ranch with Marla and Dalton was a lot of fun. I am glad it was a virtual trip or I would have been completely exhausted 🙂 The dude ranch has plenty of things to do including horseback riding and hiking trails. The distance from the main lodge to the cabins is also a good walk. Plus they followed leads to the ghost town and several other places like Scottsdale. It would have made a great honeymoon sans the dead bodies, the explosion and the fire. Maybe not as good as the tropical vacation  Marla would have liked by maybe next time.

These are characters I have grown to love, this being the 12th book in the series. They have sure come a long way since Permed to Death. Newly married they are still figuring things out like Dalton not talking to Marla about honeymooning in Arizona until after he told his cousin they would be delighted to come. They both enjoyed getting to know these long lost family members better and I did too.

The mystery was tricky but I did figure out the guilty parties a bit before Marla and Dalton. I still enjoyed following along to find out if I was right and to get all the details straight. I lost count of all the twists and turns that tried to divert my attention. The ending was very suspenseful. Learning some of the history of the area and copper mines was a great bonus.

If you are new to this series, this book can be read on it’s own. The author provides a cast of characters at the beginning of the book.
