Miss Ophelia Flax is a Victorian actress who knows all about making quick changes and even quicker exits. But to solve a fairy-tale crime in the haunted Black Forest, she’ll need more than a bit of charm…

1867: After being fired from her latest variety hall engagement, Ophelia acts her way into a lady’s maid position for a crass American millionaire. But when her new job whisks her off to a foreboding castle straight out of a Grimm tale, she begins to wonder if her fast-talking ways might have been too hasty. The vast grounds contain the suspected remains of Snow White’s cottage, along with a disturbing dwarf skeleton. And when her millionaire boss turns up dead—poisoned by an apple—the fantastic setting turns into a once upon a crime scene.

To keep from rising to the top of the suspect list, Ophelia fights through a bramble of elegant lies, sinister folklore, and priceless treasure, with only a dashing but mysterious scholar as her ally. And as the clock ticks towards midnight, she’ll have to break a cunning killer’s spell before her own time runs out…

Jillian Hart and Tom are finally tying the knot, but first they need to make sure Tom’s stepson, Finn, is as comfortable as possible in the lake house they will all call home. So when it becomes clear that Finn has fallen for a pretty cat from the Mercy Animal Sanctuary, Jillian and Tom readily agree to make room for one more—even though the tortoiseshell kitty is a notorious kleptomaniac.

So far, the cat has sneaked out of the adoption center time after time, bringing back trinkets, shoelaces, and socks. But when she brings back an antique locket, Finn enlists Tom’s and Jillian’s sleuthing skills. They hope to return the treasured item to its owner, but their search for answers is
sidetracked when a body is found. Still, their sneaky cat’s find may just lead them to a killer.…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I just love this series! I have no idea how I missed this book last year. It was the installment I had been waiting for.

Tom and Jillian are getting married! Tom’s stepson, Finn, is moving in with them, when not at college, along with his rat terrier, Yoshi. Finn is also adopting a very clever kitty from the Mercy Animal Sanctuary. While the kitten is cute as can be she is also a kleptomaniac and that has earned her the name of Magpie. She is an escape artist too. Tom and Jillian are going to have their hands full when added to their felines, Syrah, Merlot and Chablis.

The story starts out with Magpie trapped in an old love seat with a mysterious stain. Magpie has one her “treasures”, an old locket which Finn hopes can be returned to the owner. but a body found at a construction site takes top priority. So now Jillian and Tom have to add sleuthing to their list while trying to getting ready for the wedding. Maybe Magpie can help them find the killer.

Leann Sweeney writes stories where her characters shine, all her characters, human and animal. I fell head over heels for Magpie. A little ball of furry energy and a little thief 🙂 Jillian and Tom are well suited to each other. Their relationship has continued to grow throughout the series and this wedding came to be at the perfect time.

There are 2 murders in this story. The first is a local builder, the other hits very close to home, especially for Tom. My heart was breaking for him as he stepped up to the plate to find the killer. There are plenty of suspects but connecting these deaths is difficult. Someone is definitely hiding something.

I like the way Jillian is very methodical in her investigations, she tries to help her friend and police deputy Candace and Tom as much as she can but coroner, Lydia Monk, has to make things as difficult as possible. I think with the upcoming nuptials she is finally realizing she has no chance with Tom. 🙂

Each new installment of this series becomes by favorite as the author keeps topping herself. She writes stories that completely stop the real world around me. I become involved on a very personal level. I love following the clues and the drama leading up to the reveal. The ending this time was so surprising.

Ms. Sweeney write classic cozies, quirky and realistic characters, set in a small town, a marvelous mystery, and a group of fabulous felines. I highly recommend the entire series! There is a new one coming next month, The Cat, The Collector and the Killer, I promise I won’t miss this one!

Scotland, 1831. After a tumultuous courtship complicated by three deadly inquiries, Lady Kiera Darby is thrilled to have found both an investigative partner and a fiancé in Sebastian Gage. But with her well-meaning—and very pregnant—sister planning on making their wedding the event of the season, Kiera could use a respite from the impending madness.

Commissioned to paint the portrait of Lady Drummond, Kiera is saddened when she recognizes the pain in the baroness’s eyes. Lord Drummond is a brute, and his brusque treatment of his wife forces Kiera to think of the torment caused by her own late husband.

Kiera isn’t sure how to help, but when she finds Lady Drummond prostrate on the floor, things take a fatal turn. The physician called to the house and Lord Drummond appear satisfied to rule her death natural, but Kiera is convinced that poison is the real culprit.

Now, armed only with her knowledge of the macabre and her convictions, Kiera intends to discover the truth behind the baroness’s death—no matter what, or who, stands in her way…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Lady Darby has left the planning of her upcoming nuptials to her sister who needs something to keep her mind on during her confinement waiting for her baby to be born. With no pending inquires with husband to be Sebastian Gage, Kiera takes a commission from Lord Drummond to paint a portrait of his wife.  Sadly Lord Drummond is much like most men in this era and view their wives as property and are abusive. This strikes very close to home for Kiera. Before she can help Lady Drummond the woman is dead. Cause of death, Apoplexy. Back in this time period many peoples cause of death was Apoplexy or what is now called a stroke. The term was used widely when when doctors didn’t know the cause. Without an autopsy it truly couldn’t be challenged but Kiera knows the woman was murdered so she convinces Gage to start an inquiry, much to the dismay of many.

This is definitely a series that needs to be read in order as each new book builds from the last. Gage and Kiera’s relationship had a rocky start that has changed and evolved in each book always surrounded by a top-notch mystery.  Kiera still needs to build a feeling of trust with Gage. She was treated horribly my her first husband. Meeting his father in this installment shakes the security they had built, especially when she know Gage is keeping parts of his past a secret.

I enjoyed the subplot of Kiera’s sister Alana and her husband Phillip. Her pregnancy wasn’t an easy one and Phillip could be a typical man of this time period or could be the wonderful husband he seemed to be in past books.

As for the mystery, Gage and Kiera are interviewing everyone that had contact with Lady Drummond, including her husband, the staff, and her friends. The investigation also takes they to the dark and dangerous streets of the city as they try to determine what caused her death. Kiera is strong and independent and doesn’t appreciate being told she can’t go or do something. Gage tries to protect her but sometimes he even needs help from a certain unsavory character.

Anna Lee Huber continues to impress me with her storytelling.  As a reader I am engaged almost even before I start reading because I know what to expect from this author. She has never disappointed me.  I love the imagery of Scotland her words create. Her depiction of characters across all social classes is exceptional. Her plot lines are tight and the dialogue is excellent.

My reading schedule was messed up last year which made this book stay on my To-Be-Read shelf for far too long. That will not be the case with A Death Draws Near out July 5.

Bed, breakfast…and a body!

If it weren’t for the fact that she’s replacing a dead man, Kelly Jackson would love her new job managing the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast on the coast of Northern California. But Bob Phillips did plunge off the cliff to his death…and Kelly’s starting to think it may not have been an accident. Bob’s retired friends—The “Silver Sentinels”—are also on the case, especially when Kelly is attacked…and another body turns up. Kelly has her hands full with overseeing the B&B’s annual Taste of Chocolate and Wine Festival, but she’s also closing in on the killer…who’s ready to send Kelly on her own permanent vacation…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Kelly Jackson is an executive administrator of Resorts International. That means when needed she travels to a resort property to troubleshoot the problem and fill in where necessary.  She is sent to the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast in Northern California when the manager is found dead at the bottom of a cliff. The police have determined that it was an accident but The “Silver Sentinels” do not agree. This group of senior citizens think their friend Bob was murdered. They draw Kelly into their confidence and she wonders if they are right. When she is attacked, she knows that wasn’t an accident, so maybe Bob’s fall wasn’t either. So in addition to stepping into Bob’s shoes at the B&B she finds herself nosing around to find his killer.

Kelly Jackson is a very engaging character. Her boss believes all the employees at all their resorts are family. That is just how Kelly treats everyone she meets at Redwood Cove B&B. From Helen, the cook, and her son Tommy, that leave in a small guest house on the property, to Daniel, the handyman along with his daughter Allie, and all the wonderful “Silver Sentinels”, she treats them all as genuine friends. I liked them all too!

I loved Fred, Tommy’s adorable basset hound. There is a heartwarming back story on how they came together.

The setting is absolutely gorgeous and Kelly has a wonderful view from her room. Even the morning fog sounds absolutely delightful.

It seems that Bob Phillips was an extraordinary man with a big heart. He was very eco-conscious and believed in protecting all parts of the environment. Could this have gotten him killed? The story takes several twists as Kelly tries to eliminate suspects. This twists were very well written. The ending was full of suspense and a complete surprise.

The characters are what really stand out to me in this story. From youngsters to oldsters they are an amazing group. I want to pack my bags and head for the Redwood Cove Bed and Breakfast and meet up with them today. There should be any more trouble there right?? Well, I will be starting the next book in the series right away. I will keep you posted!

Flashback Friday – #Review / #Giveaway – Miss Zukas and the Library Murders by Jo Dereske

9WbGnJTR
On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first
released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

I am taking part in the Alphabet Soup Challenge and I needed a book that had a word in the title that started with “Z”. “Z” “Q” and “X” are treated differently that the other letters where the first word of the title has to start with the letter. During my search I found the mysteries by Jo Dereske that feature Miss Zukas. The first book in the series, Miss Zukas and the Library Murders was first published by Avon/Harper Collins back in 1994. So we are going way back for this Flashback Friday. I found my copy on PaperbackSwap but it was also released as an e-book in 2009. There are used paperback copies also available on Amazon.

When a dead body turns up right in the middle of the fiction stacks, the police are baffled. But Helma Zukas, who never fails to make note of the slightest deviation from the norm of everyday life, is tracking some baffling questions of her own. With the help of her not-so-proper best friend, Ruth, a six-foot-tall bohemian artist with a nose for gossip and a penchant for getting into trouble, the two are soon in hot pursuit of the truth… and getting lose enough to find they’re about to become the killer’s next victims.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Helma Zukas is a no nonsense woman, some would call her uptight, or obsessive compulsive, I call her entrenched in her ways. She does remind me of a few librarians back in the day. Hair in a bun, glasses set perfectly on her nose, clothes that cover and do not enhance her figure. She is only 36 but she is who she is and there is no changing her. She also has a keen attention to detail and that makes her a great amateur sleuth. Her best-friend, Ruth, is the total opposite of Helma in every way. She is the perfect Watson to Helma’s Sherlock.

I really enjoyed this mystery. A dead body in the library gives us a fantastic start. Helma is drawn to investigate because the murder has brought disorder to her very orderly life. The police don’t seem to have any suspects. When Helma finds a clue in the city directory she decides to figure things out for herself before sharing anything with the police. This probably wasn’t her brightest idea. There were several suspects and I missed some important clues because I put it together just before the killer was revealed.

Helma may not be the kind of main character we are used to reading about in cozy mysteries today. Maybe that is why I liked her, she is different. I even found her quite funny at times in a dry humorous kind of way.

This was a fast read, not overly complex, with interesting characters.  The “Z” book for my challenge is complete. I plan to read the next one, Miss Zukas and the Island Murders, for the Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge next year.

Flashback Friday – #Review / #Giveaway – Just Killing Time by Julianne Holmes

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first

Ruth Clagan may be an expert clockmaker, but she’s always had a tendency to lose track of time. And when trying to solve a murder, every minute counts…

Ruth’s beloved grandfather instilled in her a love of timepieces. Unfortunately after her grandmother died and he remarried, Ruth and Grandpa Thom became estranged. She’s wanted to reconnect after her recent divorce, but sadly they’ve run out of time. Her grandfather has been found dead after a break-in at his shop—and the police believe he was murdered.

Now Ruth has been named the heir to Grandpa Thom’s clock shop, the Cog & Sprocket, in the small Berkshire town of Orchard, Massachusetts. As soon as she moves into the small apartment above the shop and begins tackling the heaps of unfinished work, Ruth finds herself trying to stay on the good side of Grandpa’s bossy gray cat, Bezel, while avoiding the step-grandmother she never wanted. But as old secrets and grudges start to surface, Ruth will have to kick into high gear to solve the killer case before someone else winds up dead…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It happens to a lot of us. Life gets in the way and we miss out on connecting with those that love us as often as we should. Ruth Clagan was very close to her grandmother. When she died it was hard on Ruth. Ruth became all twisted up in her own drama and when her grandfather remarried she just couldn’t accept it. Some time passed and she got her own life back on track and was ready to reconnect with her grandfather. But she was too late. Her grandfather was found dead behind his clock shop. She comes home to find that her grandfather has been murdered and he had left his clock shop to her. Before she can make any decisions about staying in Orchard she has to find out who killed her grandfather and why. She doesn’t have time to waste, the clock is ticking and she doesn’t want to become another victim.

Ruth Clagan is a strong woman and she is smart. I liked her immediately. I had sympathy for her situation. I was impressed with her determination to not only sleuth out a killer but the way she is wants to make her grandfather’s dream come true. It is not going to be easy but she is up to the task. I also enjoyed her reconnecting with people she hadn’t seen in years. I will admit parts of Ruth’s story had me teary eyed and missing some my own family who have passed away. Her story fits the “tomorrow is never guaranteed, so cherish what you have today” line really well.

As far as the mystery there are several good twists but I did figure it out early. That can be common in first books in a series because you have to introduce the characters and the setting which is a big task. In this case the main character is also on an emotional roller coaster. So a complex mystery would be tough to get in with only 300 pages. The author has built a nice foundation for this series the mysteries to come.

This was an enjoyable debut. The next book in this series, Clock and Daggerwill be released August 2. I am anxious to get my hands on it and see what author Julianne Holmes has in store for my new favorite clock maker.

Flashback Friday – Beyond A Doubt by Nancy Cole Silverman – #Review / #Giveaway

9WbGnJTR
On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first
released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Nancy Cole Silverman just toured her new book Without A Doubt with Great Escapes. When I brought it up on my Kindle I saw that I hadn’t read the 2nd book in the series, Beyond A Doubt, even though I was sure I did. So it quickly became my Flashback Friday book.

When reporter Carol Childs is called to the scene of a body dump she has no idea she’s about to uncover a connection to a string of missing girls. Young, attractive women drawn to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood via an internet promise of stardom and romance have been disappearing. A judge’s daughter leaves behind a clue and a trip down Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame reveals a connection to a high powered real estate mogul and to a cartel targeting girls for human trafficking.

Old Hollywood has its secrets, its impersonators and backdoor entrances to old speakeasies and clubs where only those with the proper credentials can go. And when Carol Childs gets too close, she finds herself politically at odds with powers that threaten to undo her career and like the very girls she’s seeking, make her disappear.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I just watched a broadcast of one of my favorite soap opera stars, Deidre Hall from Days of Our Lives get her star on the Wall of Fame so those images were brought back with this story.

Radio reporter Carol Childs finds herself close to Hollywood and Vine several times as she investigates the murder of a judge’s daughter and a string of missing girls. For the most part she is trying to get the scoop for her radio station but since the police seems to be dragging their feet on their investigation she figures helping them can’t hurt. Carol’s FBI Agent boyfriend, Eric, is off for a little R&R on his boat so he is not around to keep her out of trouble.

The author takes on a couple of hot topic issues in this book and she does it really well. I hesitate to say too much here because I don’t want to spoil the story for you.

I will say Nancy Cole Silverman knows how to build suspense. She packs so much in these 244 pages. By the time I reached the end I was almost out of breath.

Centered around her life at a radio station, her boss is much more supportive than in the last book, even when the powers that be think murder and missing girls isn’t what they want playing on their station. We meet everyone from celebrity impersonators to a bunch of Red Hat Ladies. These characters are real and believable and some bring a little humor to a very stressful storyline and some become suspects.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Shadow of Doubt, I am upset with myself for taking so long to read this one.

A fabulous read, my only pause, was the ending, it was just a little too easy, but very entertaining and not enough to knock down my rating.

When a psychologist hits Florida’s airwaves, there’s no telling who she’s reaching…

…and there’s no telling who wants to reach back.

Maggie left her clinical practice in Manhattan and moved to sunny Cypress Grove, Florida, where she became host of WYME’s “On the Couch with Maggie Walsh.” From co-dependent wives to fetish fiends, all the local crazies love her show.

Then threats start pouring in against one of the station’s special guests-self-styled new age prophet Guru Sanjay Gingii. When one of the threats becomes a deadly reality, Maggie’s new roommate, Lark, is surprisingly the prime suspect. Now, Maggie has to prove Lark innocent while dealing with a killer who needs more than just therapy…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Talk radio is all my husband listens to but I don’t think he has ever tuned in to a program like “On the Couch with Maggie Walsh.” She gets some very unusual callers. First time and long time callers call in to talk about a variety of topics. She even has special guests like the controversial Guru Sanjay Gingii. He has his followers but he also has his enemies. Maggie has even received a threat at the station to scare her from having him on the show. Shortly after appearing on her show the guru is found dead in his hotel room. Maggie is surprised when the police show up at her door, but they are not there for her, they are there for her roommate, Lark.  What that’s crazy! Lark wouldn’t kill anyone or would she???

Mary Kennedy introduces us to a variety of characters. Maggie, of course, who seems to be a very intelligent woman but not a lot of common sense at times, which was funny in a book, wouldn’t be so funny in real life. Her roommate Lark has a past and Maggie finds out she didn’t know her as well as she thought. Her producer, Vera Mae Atkins, is a hoot, the first chapter is just the start of radio romp. The guru’s followers, staff, and exes make for a large pool of suspects. Maggie’s mom, Lola was my favorite character. She wanted to help Maggie investigate and she was crazy funny. Maggie is also trying to impress a certain detective which adds to the fun.

The radio show theme was unique for me. It did remind of the Frasier television show, his relationship with Roz was very similar to Maggie and Vera, only with a dead body added. The behind the scenes complete with a foreign receptionist who is learning English to a pompous sports announcer all blended together to make this a very interesting read.

The mystery plot was full of twists including the final one that was a total surprise. I was sure I had it all figured out and you guessed it, wrong again.

This was a good debut for this series. I want to see how these characters evolve in the next 2 books, Reel Murder and Stay Tuned for Murder.

Flashback Friday – Murder With A Twist by Tracy Kiely – #Review

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I missed when they were first
released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

I snapped this book up from NetGalley last year and never was able to read it. The author is now touring with Great Escapes and I wanted to be part of the tour. This is why I started Flashback Fridays, I was missing too many books I really wanted to read.

Visiting New York to attend a cousin’s birthday gala, Nic and Nigel Martini are looking forward to cocktails with old friends and a pampered stay at the Ritz. But when the birthday girl’s gold-digging cad of a husband goes missing, the Martini family worries that the social event of the season may turn into a story for the scandal sheets.

Nigel’s condescending aunt begs former detective Nic to find sleazy Leo, despite the fact that it would be better for everyone if he just stayed lost. Trailing a “married bachelor” with a penchant for trouble isn’t pretty; in fact it’s downright deadly. Assisted by Nigel and their newly adopted Bullmastiff, Nic must tangle with her old underworld connections if she hopes to hunt down the dirtiest Martini.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I love old movies, movies that were made before I was even born. As soon as I saw the synopsis for this book I knew the author’s inspiration had to be Dashiell Hammett’s Nick and Nora Charles. Yup, I was right. I dove right into this book and was absolutely thrilled about her “updated twist”.

The characters are reversed from Hammett’s version. Nic is a retired police detective married to Nigel Martini. His family and him by extension, are ultra wealthy. They have come to New York for the holidays and his cousin’s birthday party but she is overwrought because her husband, Leo, has gone missing. Something he has done before, but with the big birthday bash in just a few days, he must be found so the family is not scandalized in the press by his absence. Nigel’s aunt basically tells Nic to use her police training to find Leo as quickly as possible. The first thing her training tells her is that the guy is a low class jerk and that the family would be better off if he just stayed gone. But with some help from Nigel and their new puppy she will find him and then let the family decide what to do with him.

bullmastiff

I immediately pictured Nic and Nigel like Nick and Nora updated to present day, but let me tell you Skippy is no Asta. Skippy is a small horse of a dog, a Bullmastiff, and he makes everything Nic and Nigel do more interesting because he goes with them everywhere.

Just like the movie these characters are terrific. The dialogue is fast and full of wit. The Martini’s also partake plenty of martini’s, the dirtier the better. They stay at the Ritz and travel the city trying to find the missing husband. Doing so they met a few unsavory characters. None of Nigel’s family thinks much of Nic, just what see can do for them, but they are a snobby bunch so that is just fine with her.

This is a light mystery, full of humor and I loved every word. I hated for it to end. The good thing is I was able to start reading Killer Cocktail, book 2 in this series. It was released on May 8. Stay tuned I will be posting my review next Tuesday!

tracyportrait

About The Author –

Tracy Kiely is a self-proclaimed Anglophile (a fact which distresses certain members of her Irish Catholic family). She grew up reading Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and watching Hitchcock movies. She fell in love with Austen’s wit, Christie’s clever plots, and Hitchcock’s recurrent theme of “the average man caught in extraordinary circumstances.”

After spending years of trying to find a proper job that would enable her to use her skills garnered as an English major, she decided to write a book. It would, of course, have to be a mystery; it would have to be funny; and it would have to feature an average person caught up in extraordinary circumstances. She began to wonder how the characters in Pride and Prejudice might fit into a mystery. What, if after years of living with unbearably rude and condescending behavior, old Mrs. Jenkins up and strangled Lady Catherine? What if Charlotte snapped one day and poisoned Mr. Collins’ toast and jam? Skip ahead several years, and several different plot ideas, and you have her first mystery Murder at Longbourn.

While she does not claim to be Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, or Hitchcock (one big reason being that they’re all dead), she has tried to combine the elements of all three in her books.
