Everything’s coming up roses for Professor Emmeline Prather. Her scholarly book is finished, spring term is coming to a close, and her love life is blossoming. Then the festival surrounding the exhibit of Shakespeare’s First Folio opens, bringing with it a tempest more dramatic than the bard’s.

In his panel presentation, actor and grad student Tanner Sparks contends Shakespeare isn’t Shakespeare, boasting that he can prove the long-debated theory that an aristocrat actually penned the sonnets and plays. His bombshell sets off an acrid debate among scholars. But were they upset enough to kill him? That’s what Em wonders when Tanner is found dead in Shakespeare’s Garden, his macabre pose inspired by a scene from Hamlet.

At her department head’s urging, Em sets out to find the killer. Suspects abound, and Em finds herself targeted by Shakespeare-themed threats. Undaunted, she persists, determined to solve the case before the end of the semester.

With clean yet intriguing content about controversy and secret lives, this book appeals to mystery lovers of many types and levels. Characters we enjoy and want to know better populate this series.

#FlashbackFriday – Whack ‘N’ Roll: A Bunco Babes Mystery by Gail Oust #Review /#Giveaway

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

I plucked this book off of my To-Be-Read bookshelf to take care of the “O” for my Alphabet Soup – Author Edition Challenge.

The book was re-released on August 9, 2015, with the title Murder is Dicey.

Whack ‘N’ Roll: A Bunco Babes Mystery
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – South Carolina
Publisher: NAL; Original edition (August 4, 2009)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
ISBN-10: 0451227697
ISBN-13: 978-0451227690
Kindle ASIN: B013PK0K5 (Murder is Dicey (Kate McCall Mysteries))

The Bunco Babes are not your average retirees …

When not rolling the bones, they like to throw themselves into a juicy mystery.

But murder can be a dicey business ….

The sixty-ish set at Serenity Cove Estates in South Carolina certainly knows how to keep active. When not playing Bunco or putting the greens, they are gossiping-and partying. So it’s no surprise that when Kate McCall and her fellow Bunco Babes come across a dismembered arm during a golf game, rumors-and excitement-follow.

The Bunco Babes decide to roll out their own investigation. But some of the suspects are right in their very own manicured backyards. And there’s no forfeiting the game if the wrong roll of the dice sends the killer their way…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Serenity Cove Estates in South Carolina is the place Kate McCall calls home. It’s where she plays a little golf, watches Law & Order and CSI, and plays a lot of Bunco. It is while the Bunco Babes are on the golf course that they make a gruesome discovery. A severed arm in a Walmart bag. The police arrive but it is clear Kate believes her participation is crucial to solving the case. She has watched Lenny Briscoe in action so she knows she is up for the job especially with the Bunco Babes working with her. Sheriff Wiggins orders her to leave the investigation to him but she can’t help herself. When she learns her neighbor, her favorite waitress, and even one of her bunco group whereabouts can’t be accounted for she is sure the arm belongs to one of them. She decides to roll the dice and go all-in on her investigation. If she’s not careful it could be her body parts her friends find next on the golf course.

Kate McCall is a pushy, direct, and a force to be reckoned with. She dives in with both feet using her “talents” to go many places she shouldn’t and at times drags her friends right along with her. There isn’t much that can keep this sexagenarian down. She does have a few cringeworthy moments when she meets with Sheriff Wiggins and others but after I got to know her a little better she grew on me, but she is definitely an acquired taste. We do have something in common, I love watching Law & Order in all its versions, but don’t think that qualifies me to handle a murder case. She is so lucky to be surrounded by a great group of friends.

The mystery was very well-plotted and I enjoy following along each step of the way. I was surprised at the lengths Kate went to while delving into her investigation by making a special purchase and requesting surprising books from the library. She truly was like a dog with a bone.

I had heard of bunco before but really didn’t know how it was played. The women in this story sure do enjoy it and the fellowship it brings to the group. I love that the winner at the end of the night goes home wearing a tiara.

Whack ‘N’ Roll was an entertaining read with a difficult protagonist. I loved all the humor the author weaved through the story while bringing this reader a very interesting mystery. I will be reading more of this series.

Gratitude Giveaway Hop 2019

Gratitude Giveaway Hop
Organized by Bookhounds – Books, Gardens, and Dogs

I love this giveaway because it gives me a chance to say THANK YOU
and show my Gratitude in a small way!

I can’t believe it is almost Thanksgiving, but the weather should be a big clue. Autumn only lasted about 3 days.

The year was full of great reads and fun times. So many good books and I don’t know about you but my To-Re-Read shelf is still overflowing and so is my Kindle. Good thing everyone can’t see the books on the Kindle or they would think I have a serious problem, BUT as fellow bookaholics you know it is just the way we are 🙂

I want to take a moment to thank you for following my blog, reading my reviews, entering the giveaways and generally supporting me in this internet world. I still haven’t won the lottery or had the Publisher’s Clearinghouse show up at my door so, unfortunately, I can’t give all of you a prize, but please know it is because of you I get up each day and get on this computer to share my thoughts, mostly about books, with you. You are the reason I stay up late, sometimes into the early morning hours reading so I can tell you about so many good books, about 200 books this year.

On December 31 I will begin my 11th year blogging and still your comments, your prayers, your support, makes me smile each and every day, sometimes all day long.

Thank you so much!!

The Chocolate Shark Shenanigans (Chocoholic Mystery) by JoAnna Carl #Review / #Giveaway @BerkleyMystery

The Chocolate Shark Shenanigans (Chocoholic Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
17th in Series
Setting – Michigan
Publisher: Berkley (November 5, 2019)
Hardcover: 256 pages
ISBN-10: 059310000X
ISBN-13: 978-0593100004

In the newest mystery from nationally bestselling author Joanna Carl, a dive into house flipping becomes a deadly flop….

When a house near Lee and Joe’s home goes up for sale, the couple teams up with Lee’s aunt and uncle, Nettie and Hogan, to buy it, remodel it, and resell it for a sweet profit. But after the owners of the house, the Baileys, accept their offer, a local developer, Richard “Spud” Dirk, suddenly swoops in with a higher one, and it seems their dreams might be snatched away.

Lee, never as passionate about the plan as her husband and uncle, is anxious to get back to focusing on managing TenHuis Chocolade. But when a long-hidden gun is found behind a pipe in the Baileys’ basement, she begins to suspect a mystery is afoot. And when Spud turns up dead in the Baileys’ carport a few days later, it becomes clear there’s something rotten at the foundation….

To solve the murder, Lee will have to strip away layers of secrets–that is, if someone doesn’t level her first….

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I am so happy this series has returned!

Lee Woodyard’s husband Joe and her uncle Hogan have decided to get in on the house-flipping craze much to Lee’s dismay. Local developer, Richard “Spud” Dirk is not happy either. He had his eye on the property and even states the owner had given him the right of first refusal. The owners have given Joe approval to get estimates from contractors prior to the completed sale, but Joe was unavailable when the plumber came to check out the pipes so Lee played tour guide. She almost loses her life when an old gun is found in the basement and goes off just winging her a bit, but it is when the body is found in the carport cupboard that she knows this whole flipping deal was a big mistake. When the body is identified as “Spud” Dirk and him feuding over the sale with her family Lee knows she is going to have to hammer down the clues and paint the real killer into a corner unless they wipe her out first.

___

As a confirmed chocoholic, I have been all-in on this series from the very beginning. Lee and Nettie are two of my favorite cozy characters and I am thrilled their stories are continuing. I love the relationship they have with the men in their lives.

Sea salt and sharks are the themes of this story and Ms. Carl doesn’t disappoint,  This time the mystery links the present and the past with an old high gang called the “Sharks” and an old prank may have lead to a new murder. The author peppers this story with suspense as well as humor. After spending a little time catching up with the characters things move along at a quick pace. The flow was excellent and I read the entire book in one sitting.

One of the things I really enjoy about this series are the TenHuis chocolates. Whenever a character takes a bite readers are given a full mouthwatering description. I only had a Hershey bar in the house at the time but it took care of my chocolate cravings until I can lay in some truffles of my own.

Well-written, wonderful characters, a captivating mystery, Chocolate Shark Shenanigans was an entertaining story and a great escape for an afternoon or evening. I was excited to get back to Warner Pier and anxiously await my next visit.

Cozy Wednesday with Kate Carlisle – Author of Shot Through the Hearth (A Fixer-Upper Mystery) #Guest Post / #Review / #Giveaway @BerkleyMystery

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so happy to welcome Kate Carlisle back to Escape With Dollycas today!

The Twisty, Turny Research Journey to Kate Carlisle’s New Book

(Guest Post Provided by Publicist)

Kate Carlisle is the New York Times bestselling author of two ongoing series: the Bibliophile Mysteries featuring San Francisco bookbinder Brooklyn Wainwright, whose rare book restoration skills uncover old secrets, treachery and murder; and the Fixer-Upper Mysteries (as seen on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries), featuring Shannon Hammer, a home contractor who discovers not only skeletons in her neighbors’ closets, but murder victims, too.

Kate’s Latest Fixer-Upper Mystery is Shot Through the Hearth, available now.

As a writer, research can be a massive problem for me. Not because I dread it. Quite the opposite, in fact. I love it so much that I can all too easily be drawn down a circuitous path of wonderment that has no end. I’m curious about everything.

Everything.

I do my research in two stages: while plotting the story and while writing it. During the plotting stage I have more freedom to explore because the things I learn could take the story in exciting directions I never anticipated. At that stage, I don’t know what I don’t know, so every discovery has the potential to change the plot.

During the writing stage, my research has to be more focused on finding the answer to a specific question. I must discipline myself not to go off on any tangents, no matter how seductive they may be. Find the answer, get back to work.

My goal is to weave much of what I learn into a smart, funny murder mystery that keeps readers guessing and teaches them something at the same time. I want lots of those “Huh. I didn’t know that” moments.

My readers are insatiably curious, too. I think it’s one of the reasons they love my books.

To show you what a wide variety of research goes into my books, here’s a sampling of topics I studied while plotting and writing Shot Through the Hearth, my latest Fixer-Upper Mystery, and a random fact about each. You’ll have to read the book to see how these facts come together in one whodunit.

HOW MANY POUNDS DOES IT TAKE TO CRUSH A HUMAN CHEST?

Turns out, there’s no definitive answer—it depends on the strength of the person’s chest muscles. Which means, sadly, I’d go quickly, I’m afraid.

TRADITIONAL SCOTTISH STONE MASONRY TECHNIQUES (even though Shot Through the Hearth is set in Lighthouse Cove, California)

Scotland’s official website is gov.scot. The United States’ official website is usa.gov. Huh.

BARN RAISING

Historically, this was also called a raising bee. The only bees I’d heard of before were quilting bees and spelling bees. We need more bees! A cocktail party could be called a boozing bee. A city council meeting could be a sniping bee.

THE RANGE OF A RIFLE BULLET

Not only did I need to know how far the bullet could travel, but also whether it would have enough velocity at the end of its journey to do any damage. Imagine standing on the street and watching a bullet glance harmlessly off your stomach and roll to the ground.

CAN PLANTS BE SENTIENT?

Instead of sharing a fact here, I’ll share a snippet from Shot Through the Hearth. In this scene, contractor Shannon Hammer and her boyfriend Mac Sullivan, a thriller writer, explore the Ecosphere, an indoor vertical garden that’s hiding something that just may be sinister.

We stepped through the doorway and entered the tropical wonderland.

I hadn’t been inside since Julian and his team had installed small spotlights in various parts of the garden. It gave the space a wonderfully ethereal quality that I really loved.

“The air is cool,” Mac marveled. “I thought it would be warm.”

“No, the plants help clean the air and cool it down. And the louvers help.” I pointed to the nearest window and the wide horizontal blinds covering them. “They move with the sun in order to keep the interior from getting too hot at any time during the day.”

He continued to look around, taking in the verdant carpet of ferns that edged the pathway and the thick vines that draped the walls. Aloe vera plants thrived in every corner. Dozens of pothos plants, with the most abnormally large leaves I’d ever seen, cascaded down from the second- floor balcony. Succulent snake plants cast eerie, tongue-like shadows on the walls.

“I could set up a table and write in here.” Mac moved in a circle, studying the greenery all around us. “In fact . . .” He took out his phone and began taking photos. “I can see Jake Slater getting trapped in here.”

I had to smile. “That’s a great idea. And wait until you meet Stephanie.”

He began to walk up the ramp but stopped and turned. “Who’s Stephanie?”

“Let’s keep going up to the next level. I’ll show you.”

As we reached the second floor of the Ecosphere, the tendrils of the Stephanie vine brushed against Mac’s legs.

“What was that?” he demanded, jumping back.

“That’s Stephanie,” I said, laughing. “She’s a fast-growing vine and seems to move toward anything human.”

“That’s freaking weird.”

“Yeah, it’s weird. But it makes sense when Julian explains it. Something about its DNA causes the plant to react to human pheromones. Apparently it’s attracted to our breath, too. There’s a bunch of other details Julian talked about that I couldn’t begin to explain to you, but he’ll be giving Ecosphere tours starting tomorrow.”

“I’ll sign up for that. I want to hear all about Stephanie. And the rest of this place, too.”

I hope you’ll have as much fun reading Shot Through the Hearth as I had writing—and researching—it.  You can read chapter one for free at https://katecarlisle.com/shot-through-the-hearth.php. Please let me know what you think! You can reach me via my website or at www.facebook.com/katecarlislebooks

Thank you Kate for dropping by for a visit.

Keep reading for my thoughts on A Shot Through The Hearth.

Contractor Shannon Hammer is measuring murder motives in the latest Fixer-Upper Mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of A Wrench in the Works and Eaves of Destruction

Shannon’s good friend and retired tech billionaire, Raphael Nash, is loving his new retired life but he can’t stay unoccupied for too long. He’s started the Marigold Foundation that helps fund small companies and individuals who do humanitarian work around the world. It’s an exciting time in Lighthouse Cove as Raphael hosts the first ever global conference inviting big thinkers from every area of industry to give presentations on eco-living.

Raphael’s old business partner arrives in town with a grudge and a plan to steal him away from his important new passion project. Shannon knows her friend has no intention of giving up Marigold and is proud of Raphael for sticking to his guns. But when his former associate winds up dead, all signs point to Raphael.

It’s up to Shannon to hammer out the details of the murder before her friend gets pinned for the crime…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Shannon  Hammer, contractor extraordinaire, knew her job for billionaire Raphael Nash was going to be a huge job but big thinking Rafe has expanded his plans for his project and Hammer’s construction crew and for Lighthouse Cove too. Not only does he want the home on his property renovated he adds a barn-raising and a garden tower all to be completed before a global conference about eco-living. He has a vast schedule of events with many guest speakers, including Mac, Lighthouse Cove’s resident author.  Rafe has also created the Marigold Foundation, named after his lady love, to award money for research and ecologic humanitarian work around the world. He hopes the conference will become an annual event.

While Rafe Nash is over the moon excited about the foundation and conference, his former partner Dillon Charles is not happy. He wants Rafe to come back to the company they built together and to do new projects together. Rafe tries hard to explain he has a new life in Lighthouse Cove and has no plans to leave it but Charles is not backing down.

Then as the barn-raising gets underway Dillion Charles is found dead and Rafe finds himself at the top of the suspect list. Shannon vows to help her friend. She plans to find the real killer before he gets screwed for a crime he didn’t commit

___

I am always excited when a book in this series is released. With a little home construction experience, I am always pulled into Shannon’s new project and all the drama that surrounds it. Because of this series, I look at every Victorian home that crosses my path in a new light. This time the project is huge and takes about 8 months to complete so we don’t get as many details of all the work completed but the author gives us plenty of information to visualize not only the house with its wonderful outside living space, but the grounds, the barn, the tower, and the unique pods Rafe Nash brings in for his conference.

Ms. Carlisle has also constructed a fantastic mystery. The victim was shady and unlikable. As the story continues information comes to light the pries the suspect list wide open. Many people have a motive, the key is the opportunity. A second death gives a little more focus to who did the deed and readers are taken right into the middle of the scary big reveal when all the clues fall into place. That wasn’t the only scary moment, there are a few that added to the suspense of the story. I was captivated by the process and each little twist and I was still totally surprised at the end.

I enjoy that Shannon is a woman in a male-dominated field who knows her job but isn’t afraid to admit when she doesn’t know something. Her field is Victorian restoration, not barn building, and she sent one of her crew to witness and help in an Amish barn raising and bring back what he learned to have their job go off without a hitch. Her crew, many of who worked with her dad, trust her and they work together like a well-oiled machine.

Shannon also has a strong man in her life and he is right there to help when she finds herself dealing with yet another dead body. Of course, Eric Jensen, the chief of police, is on the scene and kept in the loop on everything Shannon uncovers. Her father is not quite as involved this time but it is for a good reason. Her uncle also makes an appearance. All the characters have a purpose and the dialogue flows so well.

Engaging characters and another fine mystery. A great addition to this series. Each one has been A PERFECT ESCAPE foe me and I recommend them all.

Penny for Your Secrets (A Verity Kent Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks

Penny for Your Secrets (A Verity Kent Mystery)
Historical Cozy Mystery
3rd in Series
Setting – England
Publisher: Kensington (October 29, 2019)
Paperback: 336 pages
ISBN-10: 1496713192
ISBN-13: 978-1496713193
Kindle ASIN: B07NCN3L74

England, 1919. In Anna Lee Huber’s latest mystery, former Secret Service agent Verity Kent is finding that life after wartime offers its own share of danger . . .

The Great War may be over, but for many, there are still obstacles on the home front. Reconciling with her estranged husband makes Verity sympathetic to her friend Ada’s marital difficulties. Bourgeois-bred Ada, recently married to the Marquess of Rockham, is overwhelmed trying to navigate the ways of the aristocracy. And when Lord Rockham is discovered shot through the heart with a bullet from Ada’s revolver, Verity fears her friend has made a fatal blunder.

While striving to prove Ada’s innocence, Verity is called upon for another favor. The sister of a former Secret Service colleague has been killed in what authorities believe was a home invasion gone wrong. The victim’s war work—censoring letters sent by soldiers from the front—exposed her to sensitive, disturbing material. Verity begins to suspect these two unlikely cases may be linked. But as the connections deepen, the consequences—not just for Verity, but for Britain—grow more menacing than she could have imagined.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Verity Kent and husband Sidney attend a party at the home of the Marquess of Rockham. There is clearly tension between Lord Rockham and his wife, Ada but when she pulls out a gun at the dinner table and makes a joke about killing her husband Verity knows there could be trouble ahead. When she receives a frantic call from Ada saying the Lord was dead, Verity fears her friend followed through on her statement.

Verity is also called on by a woman she met working with the Secret Service to investigate the death of her sister. Verity can’t say no, but as both investigations continue she sees her two cases may be connected and may have more deadly consequences.

___

What I really enjoy about this series in the depth of the characters. The war had profound effects on everyone, but we get a personal look at Verity and Sidney as they try to deal with his return and the PTSD and guilt he is fighting while dealing with the Verity’s independence has gained while he was gone. The struggle is real and told in a very believable way. They are surrounded by a cast of characters all dealing with issues of their own and again Ms. Huber gives them depth and their circumstances real.

I found both mysteries to be very interesting. I was more drawn to the Marquess of Rockham’s murder. It was a different time and marriages were made for stature and wealth instead of love.  Ada really had trouble adjusting to the aristocratic ways and clearly isn’t happy. I didn’t condone her behavior but understood part of where she was coming from. Verity has to see something in this woman and I was trying to find some redeeming qualities.

The other death drew Verity back to her Secret Service sources. The victim had a tough job during the war which opened the case which was first classified as a bungled home invasion to so much more. Verity was pulled in several directions and I enjoyed following alongside her as she did her best to find answers, even putting herself in the line of fire.

Anna Lee Huber has a very detailed writing style. You know she has well researched this time in history and does a great job fictionalizing the time period and giving readers a story filled with imagery to bring the story alive. People and places were easy to see in my mind’s eye.

Each book in this series can be read on its own but I recommend reading them in order to really get to know Verity Kent.

Storm of Secrets: A Haunted Bluffs Mystery by Loretta Marion – #Special Guest / #Author Interview / #Giveaway

Storm of Secrets: A Haunted Bluffs Mystery
by Loretta Marion

I loved watching Cassie try to figure out the messages from her deceased grandparents as much as any other element of the story . . . This was a suspenseful, well-written mystery and I hope Cassie, her family, and friends will be back for many more.
~The Book’s the Thing

With a total of two crimes and three family secrets, this book will appeal to both women’s fiction and mystery readers . . . I enjoyed it a great deal for the excellent characterizations of the main protagonists.
~Diane Reviews Books

A deadly storm, a missing three-year-old child, a suspicious death, and the eerie presence of the spirits of the dead set the stage for the second mesmerizing installment of Loretta Marion’s paranormal suspense series.

A powerful storm descends upon Cape Cod’s Whale Rock at the peak of tourist season–and the weekend Cassandra Mitchell’s and Daniel Benjamin’s wedding is set to take place at The Bluffs, the magnificent Victorian mansion Cassie inherited from her family. In the wake of the storm’s destruction, three-year-old Lucas Kleister goes missing–and the body of small-time drug dealer Lee Chambers is found in a restaurant dumpster. Now, the WRPD are faced with a murder to solve, a missing child to find, and the aftermath of one of the worst storms in recent memory.

While aiding with the clean-up and helping the displaced, Cassie has been receiving cryptic messages from the spirits of her great-grandparents, Percy and Celeste Mitchell, the original residents of The Bluffs. At first, the messages are benign, but soon, they begin to point to something more sinister. As Cassie works to decipher their meaning, the specter of a mysterious local legend surfaces. The tale of Barnacle Boy–and what happened to him during another destructive storm decades earlier–will weave through the desperate search to find Lucas and the identity of a killer.

“Modern and historic mysteries collide in Marion’s bittersweet storytelling.” Kirkus Reviews

“[A] gripping sequel…Marion seamlessly weaves the multiple story threads together. Fans of tales of regional intrigue will be satisfied.” —Publishers Weekly

Author Interview

Loretta MarionHi Loretta,

Thank you for visiting today!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

After growing up and attending college in the Midwest, I spent a decade in Florida before settling in New England. I was fortunate to have a diverse career that spanned several industries and offered many unexpected opportunities. I am even more fortunate to have a troupe of exceptional friends spread across the country. It was over a decade ago, through the unlikely world of Hospice, that I uncovered a hidden desire to write fiction. I find writing to be a most enchanting experience and it has enriched my life beyond what I could have imagined. My husband is retired, making our travel aspirations easier to achieve, and we now split our time between Rhode Island and Florida. We have always been devoted to our canine children, though we find ourselves for the first time without a loving pooch in our world; a void we hope to soon fill.

What are three things most people dont know about you?

  1. I once wrote a newspaper advice column.
  2. I have a degree in food science and dietetics.
  3. I was once a spelling bee champ and now excel at Scrabble (at the extreme frustration of my husband).

An extra – my husband’s nickname for me is Lady Laptop

What is the first book you remember reading?

Dr. Suess’s The Cat in the Hat

What are you reading now?

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

The Cloister by James Carroll (my book club’s current selection)

What books have most inspired you?

Of Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

What made you decide you wanted to write mysteries?

I didn’t decide to be a mystery writer. Mysteries decided on me. I began this journey by writing women’s fiction, but elements of mystery would continue to find their way into all my stories. Since I’ve always been a mystery reader, perhaps it made sense that I would also enjoy writing them.

Do you have a special place you like to write?

I have a few places where I enjoy writing. At home, I split my writing time between our cozy sunroom, which my husband refers to as my theater of creativity, and a stand-up desk in a corner of my master bedroom. Both spaces offer a view out to a preserve and the bay beyond.

Some of my most fertile writing has taken place at a cottage on Cape Cod Bay. It is my favorite writing retreat and was the inspiration for creating the Haunted Bluffs Mystery Series which takes place on the Cape.

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

The short answer is everywhere! Everything and everyone are fair game to the writer. I keep several notebooks scattered about where I can jot down ideas that come to me as I am observing the world. I also keep a notepad on my nightstand, as often ideas come to me before drifting off to sleep, especially dialogue as I’m thinking through scenes I’m working on. Sometimes I’m even awakened with a good scheme that I don’t want to forget.

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

The promotional aspects of being a published author are the most difficult for me. I want my books – not me – to be receiving the attention. But it’s a necessity for authors to put themselves out before the public to bring that attention to their work. Another challenge would be deadlines. I’m often asked how long it takes to write a novel, and my answer is consistent: Without a deadline, six years with a deadline, six months!

What do you think makes a good story?

Flawed but memorable characters, especially those guarding secrets, while facing the loss of something that holds great personal value to them; a precious item, a treasured person or place. Conflict of some degree must be the center of any good story. An atmospheric setting is also an essential element.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

None of them. Creating and slipping into the skin of characters that are so unlike me is one of the most fun aspects of writing. And I truly enjoy spending time with my characters, even the wicked ones! It’s also an opportunity to live vicariously through situations that are very unlikely scenarios in my own life.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

Interweaving a present-day mystery with one of an historic nature is probably the most distinguishing aspect of my books. It’s a technique that I enjoy employing as I think it adds a richness to the story.

Whats next on the horizon for you?

I’m working on an intriguing idea for a third Haunted Bluffs Mystery. I’ve also written two new mysteries – one co-authored by my husband – both in the editing stages. I’m contemplating bringing back to life the very first manuscript I wrote. My agent and I both love the book but never found the right home for it. It needs a good polish and I’m hoping to find the time to do that between other projects.

Elizabeth Miles finds herself in a position no con can help her escape. Her beloved fiancé, Gideon Bates, is awaiting his turn in the draft to fight in the Great War. When Maddie Springer—shoe designer turned amateur sleuth—tags along with her mother to the Antiques Extravaganza road show, the last thing she expects to have to do is pull her mom off of a celebrity appraiser after he calls her prized antique hatpin a phony. But things go from harried to homicide when the same appraiser is found dead just moments later—killed by Mom’s hatpin!

Now not even Maddie’s husband, LAPD Detective Jack Ramirez, can save Mom as the force’s two most bumbling detectives are assigned to the case. As if Maddie doesn’t have enough on her plate, her best friends, Dana and Marco, enlist her help to plan the most over-the-top Hollywood surprise party ever for Dana’s fiancé (who has a little surprise of his own up his sleeve), Maddie’s adorable twin toddlers are always up to no good, and the only thing that can calm her fashion-challenged and suddenly-a-suspect mom down are aura cleansing from her favorite Venice Beach psychic, Mrs. Rosenblatt. Whether they help or hurt, Maddie’s friends assist her in wading through a slew of murder suspects—none of whom are telling the truth and all of whom have ample motive to want the appraiser dead. Was it the frigid business partner with questionable ethics? The clown-collecting fan-turned-stalker? The auction house owner with a grudge? Or was the appraiser’s real business something much more sinister than his TV personality let on…and much more deadly?

Maddie and her eccentric gang of unlikely sleuths are under the gun to find out before the real killer strikes again…and Mom takes the fall!

Praise for Suspect in High Heels (High Heels Mysteries)
by Gemma Halliday

This was an entertaining, fun, and witty read.
~I Read What You Write

I absolutely adored (if it is possible to adore a mystery) this book and the characters.
~My Reading Journeys

I fully enjoyed re-immersing myself in Maddie’s crazy world and reconnecting with the fun characters who make it up . . . best friend, Marco is always good for a laugh, even if not so much for fashion tips! The descriptions of his over-the-top outfits are hilarious and definitely bring a touch of sparkle to the tale.

Murder at First Pitch: Ball Park Mysteries by Nicole Asselin – #Review /#Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour @nanazlyn

About Murder at First Pitch

Setting – Massachusetts
Pandamoon Publishing (September 4, 2019)
Paperback: 188 pages
ISBN-10: 1950627217
ISBN-13: 978-1950627219

32-year-old Madeline Boucher’s Grandfather instilled a love in the Boston Red Sox into her from an early age and increased that love by purchasing a local Independent League Baseball team, the Abington Armadillos.

After losing her corporate job in Boston, Madeline realizes her best option is to join the family baseball business. As the new “Social Media Director” for the team, Madeline attends her first business function and witnesses an argument between her brother Ben, and a strange man.

A few days later when walking the ballpark during her early morning hours, she finds the body of a man beaten to death with a baseball bat in the Visitor’s Dugout. It was the man her brother was arguing with at the party. Madeline is concerned that her brother would be considered a suspect. Through the local Detectives and Davis – the head of security for the ballpark she learns the victim is Christopher Dailey, a local baseball scout and prior felon.

When her brother is arrested and taken to the police station, she realizes she needs to figure out who the real culprit is, so her brother doesn’t take the fall for something she knows he didn’t do.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

I have watched a lot of baseball over the years so I was very excited to read Murder at First Pitch. I was not disappointed at all!

Maddie Boucher’s family owns the Abington Armadillos, an Independent League Baseball Team where pro players not ready to give up the game play with up and coming players with hopes to someday make the Big Leagues. Maddie’s corporate job has been phased out and she has now decided to take a more active role in the family business with her brother Ben and her parents.

Maddie usually takes a morning stroll around the ballpark, taking in everything from the maintenance crew getting the field ready and the scouts, coaches, and players meeting, and the team practices. A few days before the big grand opening game of the season Maddie notices something in one of the dugouts. A closer look shows her it is a body, a man who appears to have been badly beaten with a baseball bat. A man she saw her brother arguing with at a park party earlier in the week. She later learns that the man was a local scout with a felony record and yes, the police have her brother Ben on the top of their suspect list. She is quick to decide she needs to set the record straight and prove her brother’s innocence. Just when she thinks she has struck out a wild pitch brings a new suspect up to the plate. Maddie just needs to bat a little cleanup before she passes her info on to the cops.

___

I really liked the family dynamic in this book. They are close-knit with a huge responsibility but everyone can see how much they love baseball, the park, and each other. Family businesses can be stressful but the Boucher family wants their patrons to have fun and they have fun making sure they do. The ballpark is their home away from home and even after a murder they stick together and try to keep things as normal as possible.

Madeline Boucher is a strong protagonist. She followed the clues quite logically and wasn’t afraid to get in people’s faces or hide and eavesdrop to get answers. I enjoyed how she tried to keep the head of security appraised of her findings, there is a definite romantic spark there. The author pitched in some twists and red herrings making the mystery tough to solve. I was totally captivated following Maddie and was surprised when the murderer was revealed.

Ms. Asselin has packed a lot into 188 pages. The book has a nice flow and is full of words that bring the Abington Armadillos complex and surrounding area clearly into focus. She has introduced characters I already care about and want to know better. She has hit this series debut out of the park. Cozy baseball fans will love Murder at First Pitch.
