#FlashbackFriday – Word to the Wise (A Library Lover’s Mystery) by Jenn McKinlay #Review / #Giveaway

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

The book I am featuring this week had been on the shelf right next to my desk staring at me for too long! 🙄

Word to the Wise (A Library Lover’s Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
10th in Series
Setting – Connecticut
Berkley (September 3, 2019)
Mass Market Paperback ‏ : ‎ 304 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0593100042
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0593100042
Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B07L7TDZ3K

Lindsey Norris is finally getting married to the man of her dreams–but it’s not all roses for Briar Creek’s beloved library director, as gardening enthusiast and town newcomer Aaron Grady gives the term “book lover” a whole new meaning. Inappropriate looks and unwelcome late-night visits to Lindsey’s house have everyone from the crafternooners to Lindsey’s fiancé, Sully, on edge.

When Grady’s dead body is found staged outside the library and all the clues point to Sully, Lindsey knows it’s up to her to dig through the hidden chapters of Grady’s previous life to find the real culprit and clear Sully’s name. But becoming a thorn in the killer’s side is not without its consequences, and the closer Lindsey gets to the truth, the more determined the murderer is to make her just a footnote.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Library Director Lindsey Norris loves her job but one of her patrons is making her very uncomfortable. After helping him find some gardening information he brings her flowers to the library, plants himself in a chair there, and just stares at her, then he shows up at her home with more flowers. No matter what she says to him he just won’t stop. Her friends and her fiancé, Sully are concerned about this unwanted attention too.

When the man is found dead, his body staged outside the library, all the evidence puts Sully in the hot seat. Lindsey knows she should concentrate on her wedding plans and leave the investigation to her friend, police chief Emma Plewicki but she just can’t do that. She needs to do all she can to help clear Sully and reveal the real killer. She can’t have her wedding without her groom. Getting in the killer’s way is dangerous though. She can’t have her wedding without a bride either!

All the characters in this series continue to grow and evolve. Lindsey and Sully’s relationship has developed very realistically and that relationship continues to make Lindsey stronger in each book. Beth, the children’s librarian is just so darn sweet and a true friend to Lindsey. Even Mrs. Cole is softening just a little bit. Emma has grown too, but she still doesn’t really want her friend investigating another murder. I love that the cast is very diverse and all their interactions are genuine. The canine characters, Heathcliff and now Duke who visits the library once a week with his person Laura are great too and always give me the warm fuzzies.

Now let me tell you the stalker theme of this book was a mind grabber with plenty of suspense. Ms. McKinlay added plenty of twists but the killer caught my focus right away. There was another nice twist though that made things even more dire.

I felt for Lindsey as she tried her best to deal with Aaron Grady. He was new in town and she gave him so many chances even when his actions really started to scare her. Her patience at first shows just how much she has grown. I really enjoyed Lindsey’s determination to find the true guilty party.

Setting a quick pace Jenn McKinlay has written a book that was almost impossible to put down. Word to the Wise is a wonderful addition to the Library Lover’s Mystery Series. I do love these characters and the way the author tells their stories.

Cozy Wednesday featuring Rum and Choke (A Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon Mystery) by Sherry Harris #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks @SHarrisAuthor

Welcome to the first Cozy Wednesday of 2023!
I am so happy to feature Rum and Choke by Sherry Harris today!

Rum and Choke (A Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon Mystery
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Setting – Florida
Kensington Cozies (December 27, 2022)
Mass Market Paperback ‏ : ‎ 336 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1496734386
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1496734389
Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B09YL4V5R9

Chloe Jackson runs a saloon in Emerald Cove, Florida—and she also happens to be an expert at putting people behind bars . . .

LAST CALL

The Florida Panhandle Barback Games are coming up and Chloe’s been drafted to represent the Sea Glass Saloon—competing in various obstacle-course events that conclude with rolling an empty keg up a hill. The rivalries are so fierce that some of the participating bars even stoop to bringing in ringers.

Meanwhile, Chloe’s friend Ann—a descendant of the famed pirate Jean Lafitte—asks her to come along for a boat ride as Ann dives into the Gulf of Mexico. She’s found some old papers that may identify the location of sunken treasure. Instead, she finds a sunken body—of one of the ringers hired for the Barback Games. Now that murder is in the mix, Chloe has to figure out whether one of the competitors went overboard . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

We are back in Emerald Cove, Florida just in time to witness Chloe Jackson train for the upcoming Barback Games. The obstacle course can be tough and the trophy is such a coveted prize some of the bars have brought in ringers. Vivi Slidell the saloon’s co-owner and head bartender Joaquin Diaz both encourage Chloe to take the day off and check out the competition.

Chloe has also been asked by Vivi’s friend Ann to help her with a project regarding some hidden treasure linked to her family history. Instead of finding treasure, they find the dead body of one of the ringers brought in to participate in the Barback Games.

So while searching for sunken treasure with Ann they are also searching for a killer. Suddenly pushing a keg up a hill doesn’t seem so hard.

What a fantastic story!

I loved that Ann Williams who claims to be a descendant of the famous pirate Jean Lafitte was given a starring role in this installment. She is known as a “fixer” in the area and until now has been pretty mysterious. The fact that she asked Chloe to help her was very interesting. Chloe becomes a loyal friend really fast especially when they find themselves in dire straights.

Chloe has really grown over the course of this series. She and Vivi co-owing the Sea Glass Saloon has opened up a ton of possibilities. They have learned how to work together very well. Throw Joaquin into the works and they all make a great team. I am so happy that they have realized they need to hire more help. Chloe’s interview techniques had me laughing out loud. The other thing that makes me happy is Chloe’s relationship with Rip. It is evolving at a perfect pace.

Miss Harris really pulled out the stops when she penned the mysteries in this book. The mystery of a sunken pirate ship grabbed my attention right away. The subplot has several nice twists and a moment that stopped my heart. The murder mystery was compelling as well. Chloe did her best to link all the clues together and my oh my that final twist was a doozy.

Everything I have read by Ms. Harris has been fun and entertaining. Rum and Choke is just the latest in a group of wonderful reads. Her characters are well-developed, the mysteries are complex and even when it’s raining the setting is superb, especially when the snow is flying here in Wisconsin.

I am really excited for the next book in this series because the author has dropped a few breadcrumbs of probable coming events and the last line of the book had me grinning ear to ear.

Escape With Dollycas Into A Good Book is 14!

I can’t believe I have been blogging for 14 years. Some days it feels like work but most days it is a lot of fun. I love sharing my thoughts about books with you and what is happening with me and my family. You have always been so supportive. This year an unexpected hospital stay scared the bejesus out of me and kept me off the computer. Training Mr. Dollycas to keep this blog and the book tours going was both stressful and hilarious but he did an awesome job and you supported him as well. He enjoyed filling in and even started his own blog this year. He just needs to decide what he wants to do with it, LOL. He has started reading again, something he hasn’t done since our son passed away. I have invited him to do a guest review here so that may be something new in the future.

Since I began blogging:

there have been 5736 Posts most of which included a giveaway

Saturday Giveaway – Wagging through the Snow (A Melanie Travis Mystery) by Laurien Berenson #ARC / #Giveaway

Welcome to Saturday Giveaway!
I reviewed this back when it was released and recently found the ARC on my giveaway shelf.

Wagging through the Snow (A Melanie Travis Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
21st in Series
Setting – Connecticut
Kensington (September 26, 2017)
Hardcover: 224 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1496712981
Kindle ASIN: B01N9NEDRF

Melanie Travis needs a little peace from her busy life this Christmas. But the usual holiday hubbub is a joy compared to the killer surprise she finds tucked underneath the tree . . .

With a demanding teaching job at Connecticut’s elite Howard Academy and five poodles scampering around the house, Melanie barely has energy for the upcoming Christmas rush. But she unwraps an unexpected challenge when her brother and ex-husband, elated by the recent success of their country café, make a spontaneous bid on a dilapidated pine tree farm. Although the ten-acre lot had been a popular seasonal destination while the original owner was still alive, it’ll take some sprucing up—and a small miracle or two—before the neglected place is in shape for December.

Unfortunately, the impromptu business venture goes cold when the group discovers a purebred Maltese whimpering in the snow-covered grove—right beside a dead body. Pete, a squatter who camped out on the land, apparently met his end after a fallen fir tree branch knocked him on the head. But as Melanie and Aunt Peg investigate Pete’s history and the terrible habit that cost him everything, it’s clear his death was no accident. Now, Melanie must run through a flurry of likely suspects and muzzle a dogged murderer in time—or she’ll be next on someone’s deadly list.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Look at the cute little face on the cover. I want one! but am restraining myself because my two canine companions would not like another dog in our house. At 14 years old, they are pretty set in their ways.

Melanie Travis is counting down the days until the holiday break at Howard Academy while taking care of the usual Christmas things at home. When her brother announces he has brought a Christmas tree farm without consulting his partner, Melanie’s ex husband, she is very surprised. Even more surprising in that her brother wants her to inform her ex about this “great deal”.  The extended family all gathers to check out the place and discovers it needs a bit of work to open in time for the Christmas shoppers but together they think they can handle it. That is until they find a dead man in the woods. They also find a cute little dog by his side. The police rule it an accidental death but Melanie and Aunt Peg aren’t sure that is the case. They start their own investigation and find their aren’t too many people sad that the man is dead. Their suspect list seems to grow as each day passes until the killer turns their sights on Melanie, she stuck her nose into something that was not her business and she may be the next cold body her family finds.

This is a doggone great story especially if you love dogs like I do. Melanie and her husband, Sam have enough dogs in their house to form a doggie basketball team. They also have two sons, Davey and Kevin, so to say life at their house is busy is a huge understatement, but she still finds time to help her brother and tag along with her Aunt Peg at a moment’s notice.  She is also close to her ex, Davey’s dad, and his new wife. I am always amazed at their organizational skills and patience as they juggle all these balls in the air. The character development is outstanding. The characters are real and so engaging. A strong blended family portrayal like this is heartwarming.

The mystery this time deals with a homeless man and his alcoholism that has driven almost all of his friends and family away. The plot leads us back in time to see how his life progressed until he was found dead. Melanie’s compassion shines as she tries to find answers and justice for a man she never met. While the story handles serious issues it is also full of laugh out loud moments. Ms. Bererson manages to merge everything together masterfully.

This series has been going strong for several years but don’t let that stop you from jumping in with this holiday story. Each mystery is contained to its book and the author gives you enough character information to never feel lost. I can’t promise that you won’t want to read previous installments though after reading this one. In fact I would be surprised if you didn’t. It is a terrific series.

Wagging Through the Snow is a perfect escape and the perfect holiday gift for any dog lover on your list. Don’t wait for the snow to fly before you get your copy!

the books I was not able to review

from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

The Santa Suit: A Novel
Holiday Romance Fiction
St. Martin’s Press (September 28, 2021)

From Mary Kay Andrews, the New York Times bestselling author of Hello, Summer, comes a novella celebrating the magic of Christmas and second chances in The Santa Suit.

When newly-divorced Ivy Perkins buys an old farmhouse sight unseen, she is definitely looking for a change in her life. The Four Roses, as the farmhouse is called, is a labor of love—but Ivy didn’t bargain on just how much labor. The previous family left so much furniture and so much junk, that it’s a full-time job sorting through all of it.

At the top of a closet, Ivy finds an old Santa suit—beautifully made and decades old. In the pocket of a suit she finds a note written in a childish hand: it’s from a little girl who has one Christmas wish, and that is for her father to return home from the war. This discovery sets Ivy off on a mission. Who wrote the note? Did the man ever come home? What mysteries did the Rose family hold?

Ivy’s quest brings her into the community, at a time when all she wanted to do was be left alone and nurse her wounds. But the magic of Christmas makes miracles happen, and Ivy just might find more than she ever thought possible: a welcoming town, a family reunited, a mystery solved, and a second chance at love.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Ivy Perkins is fresh off her divorce and has purchased an old farmhouse, The Four Roses, online without seeing it in person. She arrives with her dog Punkin, a couple of chickens, and a carload of her possessions to meet the realtor for the key. She immediately sees she has her work cut out for her with a sagging porch and a driveway full of potholes. When she finally gets the front door open she sees the previous family left most of their furniture behind and the inside needs some repairs and updating too. As she continues to investigate her new home she finds a wondrous old Santa Suit still in perfect condition. Then she finds a mystery in the pocket in the form of a child’s note with a very important wish, that her father comes home safely from the war.

So while she tries to make herself at home in this new place she now needs to solve the mystery. Who was this child? Did their father make it home? And why was this note left in the pocket of the Santa suit?

While on her mission she meets several people and decides maybe that isn’t a bad thing. Christmas can be a magical time and Ivy just may have arrived in town at the perfect time.

I loved this story!

Ivy is a fabulous main character. Still burned from her divorce she was strong enough to make a huge decision. One that could have truly backfired but didn’t. She meets her realtor Ezra Wheeler. A much younger man than she expected. He is friendly and kind and he appears to be sweet on Ivy almost from the start.

The previous owners were prominent in the community and very well-liked. Christmas was their holiday and the townspeople hope Ivy will feel the same way. Finding out her new house used to be called The Christmas House does add a little pressure. I did enjoy the way the town welcomed Ivy and gave her some little pushes she needed. The people were charmingly genuine.

The story has several moving parts for a novella but they all come together in a wonderful way. All the people Ivy meets are delightfully developed. We are able to learn their backstories and get invested in their lives. My only minor complaint is that the romance developed a little too fast for my liking but it sure did work with the Christmas theme.

The Santa Suit is a heartwarming cozy holiday read with captivating characters set in a beautiful little mountain town. The book is easily read all in one sitting and it is sure to give your Christmas Spirit a little spark.

In the quaint island village of Eastport, Maine, Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and Ellie White run the Chocolate Moose bakery, where delicious treats take the spotlight—but murder sometimes gets a walk-on role . . .

Jake and Ellie are taking a break from perfecting their chocolate pizza recipe to cater a housewarming party hosted by movie icon Ingrid Merryfield. Miss Merryfield is famous for her old-Hollywood glamour. Her new home, Cliff House, has a reputation too—for being haunted. But she isn’t concerned, and some of her guests even try to summon a spirit during the party, using an Ouija board. What arrives instead is a freak autumn storm that downs an ancient tree, trapping everyone on the property and setting the stage for a killer’s planned spree.

Though Jake and Ellie don’t intend to get stirred into the mix, there’s no avoiding it—especially when they witness one of the guests being shoved over the very precipice that gave Cliff House its forbidding name.

Jake and Ellie begin sifting through suspects and motives, a search that takes them from a long-lost family graveyard to a wise old herbalist’s deceptively-sweet cottage and finally to Cliff House’s overgrown gardens. Is there some ghostly presence involved—or a flesh-and-blood villain? And either way, can they ensure that they avoid meeting their very own, very permanent Hollywood ending?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Movie icon Ingrid Merryfield has come to Eastport, Maine and her first stop is the Chocolate Moose Bakery. Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and Ellie White are a little starstruck and surprised when the actress says she has come “home” to Eastport and purchased Cliff House, a house known for being haunted. She asks Jake and Ellie to cater the desserts for her upcoming party and will pay them handsomely to stay overnight to cater to the guests food needs as requested. Needing money to keep the bakery open they just can’t refuse.

The party starts off okay but soon the Ouija board is pulled out to try to lure some ghosts. The only thing that they seem to conjure up is a terrific storm that brings down a huge tree that blocks the only exit by road from the property leaving Ellie, Jake, Bella, and Mika trapped. Soon thereafter bodies start dropping like flies. One, off the cliff, another in the basement, and more to come. Ellie and Jake want out and go to great lengths to try to do that as soon as they realize there is a killer in their midst or a very angry ghost.

Jake and Ellie find themselves in trouble again and have taken Bella and Mika along for the ride. Mika’s husband Sam tries to help and even Jake’s dad gets in on the action. We see the supporting characters differently in this story. Everyone played an exciting role and I loved that. A surprising new character stole my heart and attention immediately. Igor, an Irish Wolfhound found himself in danger too and it made my heart skip a beat during a very tense scene.

This story unfolds at breakneck speed so readers have to hold on tight.  Jake and Ellie took a lot of risks to free their family and friends from the Cliff House property. The killer was not their only worry. They had to battle a horrendous storm, high tides and big waves, earthquakes, falling trees, missing ladders, and more. They traveled through tunnels, spooky rooms, and hallways at Cliff House trying to find answers. They were in constant motion the entire story. I was exhausted for them and with them by the time I turned the final page.

Ms. Graves plotted out a whirlwind mystery and kept the pedal to the metal from start to finish. I was so caught up in the story I didn’t really form my own list of suspects and the actual reveal of the killer was a bit of a surprise. The pieces start to fall into place for me later in the book. This plot really kept me on my toes.

Ms. Graves took her characters on quite an adventure in Death by Chocolate Chip Cupcake and in turn her readers. I really enjoyed this book a lot.

I am excited about the upcoming Death by Chocolate Marshmallow Pie set to hit shelves on April 25, 2023. I think both the characters and myself need a little time to catch our breath before we can handle whatever Ms. Sarah Graves dreams up next. We will all be ready by April.

About the Author

Sarah Graves lives in Eastport, Maine, in a 200-year-old house much like Jake Tiptree’s. After 20 years of home repair – and yes, it really does make you think about murder! – she has handed in her toolbox and returned to her first love: chocolate. When she’s not cooking or baking something delectable, or writing about it, she tends a huge garden or shovels snow, depending upon the season.
