Special Guest – Barbara Pronin – Author of The Miner’s Canary #Interview / #Giveaway

The Miner’s Canary
by Barbara Pronin

It is my pleasure to welcome Barbara Pronin to Escape With Dollycas today!

Hi Barbara.

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a proud grandma, Brooklyn-born but a Southern Californian since graduating from CSULA. I’ve been an actor, a probation officer, a newsroom editor, and a substitute teacher, which led to my first book, “Substitute Teaching: A Handbook for Hassle-free Subbing,” and subsequently to my seven novels.

What are three things most people dont know about you?

  1. Heavy winds scare me stupid.
  2. I wish I had a sister.
  3. In my next life, I want to be a pianist.

What books/authors have most inspired you?

Sophie’s Choice/William Styron

House on Endless Waters/Emuna Elon

Leaving Time/Jodi Picoult

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

For my mysteries, unless they are grounded in science or industry (as Syndrome was) I tend to research as I am writing because I mostly need answers to specific questions. For my just completed historical novel, I researched for many weeks before beginning to write, then continued researching as new issues needed probing and because I wanted to be certain the historical aspects and timeline – and even the autos and uniforms – were correct. I would have loved to revisit Amsterdam and Haarlem, but as I was writing during the pandemic, I had to rely on my memories and my research.

Do you ever suffer from Writer’s Block?

Rarely – but when I do, it is usually a sign that I’m taking the story in a questionable direction or I’m not being true to my characters’ motivations. I go back, then, and read everything that’s come before, and that usually gets me back on track.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?

Write what you love. Join a read and critique group to give and get valuable and unbiased feedback – and when you have a polished manuscript, persevere with your queries. Rejections come for all sorts of reasons, some of which have nothing to do with your writing, so keep submitting and submitting and submitting.

When you are not writing what do you like to do?

Read. I never seem to have enough time for it. I also enjoy cooking for friends and family. I find it relaxing. And I struggle at the piano for my ears only and only when no one else is around.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

To Africa. I adore elephants. They are such sentient beings. I would like to see them in their natural habitat – and I want to see Botswana, which Alexander McCall Smith made so real for me with his engaging First Ladies Detective Agency series!

What is next on the horizon for you?

I’m so glad you asked! I have just completed, Winter’s End, a World War II historical novel set in the Netherlands, researched and written with passion, and narrated by three young Dutch women who moved into my head and refused to leave until I told their story. It is under contract for publication in the fall of 2023.

Thank you Barbara for visiting today!

from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Seville—the home of tapas, flamenco, and … murder?

Tour guide Lana Hansen is finally leading a trip to Spain—and during Easter week, no less! To top it off, she is a speaker at a prestigious travel and tourism expo taking place in Seville during the tour. Luckily, her clients—all influential travel bloggers and writers—are also attending the trade show.

Lana is excited to speak at the conference … that is, until Chet Rogers—an eminent travel writer being honored at the expo—publicly humiliates her and several of her guests.

When Chet is killed during a workshop soon after, Lana is one of the Spanish police’s prime suspects. But she is not the only one in her group who would rather see Chet out of the picture—permanently.

Can Lana sleuth out the killer’s true identity and dance her way out of a jail sentence before her group’s tour to Seville is over?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Lana Hansen is in Seville, Spain to take part in a panel at a tourism expo along with several others in the traveling field. She is clearly the newbie in the group but it excited to be included. She is a bit nervous about meeting Chet Rogers, a man being honored at the event for his long years of service to the travel industry but his latest published piece smearing her and all the other panelists has made him a very unpopular man.

Happy to have a little fun, the group attends a flamenco dancing workshop complete with dancing lessons in costumes. Chet complained about everything but soon after the workshop ended Chet’s rancor came to an abrupt halt when the lights went out. When the lights came back on a very dead Chet was revealed. His body was surrounded by a room full of suspects including Lana.

Lana had hoped for a trip without any deaths but here she goes again. Time to sleuth out another killer to keep herself from dancing her way right into a jail cell.

To travel virtually with Lana is such a good time. Thanks to the beautiful details the author gives us about each place Lana’s visits comes alive. I felt like a butterfly on Lana’s shoulder throughout the entire story seeing monuments, cathedrals, and courtyards. I was delighted to read about the fabulous places I will never see in real life.

Lana is a wonderful tour guide who yes, might be a “magnet for murders” but it truly isn’t her fault. She is genuine, patient, kind, and attentive to the needs of her clients. She knows how to keep her ears open and ask the right questions making her a fine amateur sleuth. I enjoy the way she and Randy work together but he will be taking a new job soon. Their Spain adventure is one they will never forget.

Ms. Alderson penned a very entertaining mystery set in a place I have always wanted to visit. My 7th Wanderlust Tour is in the books. Death by Flamenco is a terrific addition to this series.

Stayed tuned! I will be reviewing Death by Gondola and Death by Puffin next week!

Greetings from Haven, Florida, a quaint, scenic old town on the Gulf Coast where Massachusetts transplant Maureen Doherty and her excessively friendly Golden retriever are the newest proprietors of the charming local inn…along with its many ghostly tenants! Now the paranormal crime investigations continue with the second installment in bestselling author Carol J. Perry’s Haunted Haven Mystery Series, as Maureen is preparing for her first holiday season in her haunted century-old inn…

Christmas lights on palm trees and Santa hats on plastic pink flamingos are far from the snowy landscape Maureen and her beloved golden retriever, Finn, are used to. But Maureen is determined to make this a holiday to remember—which means finding a way to promote Haven House on a shoestring. Fortunately, Haven’s vintage movie theater, the Paramount, has come up with a great “Twelve Days of Christmas” idea. They’ll feature an impressive list of the best classic Christmas movies ever made—shown by one-time movie actor-turned-projectionist Decklin Monroe . . .

But nobody bothered to tell Maureen that the Paramount is haunted by the ghost of a man who was murdered a few years back. Haven’s top cop Frank Hubbard doesn’t believe in ghosts but, believing that Decklin Monroe was somehow involved, he wants a reluctant Maureen’s help.

That plan is derailed when, on the first day of the festival, a fresh murder victim is found at the theater. Now Maureen has to defend her staff and guests, while trying to keep her high-spirited resident ghosts out of the picture—before they have company for the holidays . . .

Special Guest – Elizabeth Pantley – Author of Cowboys and Chaos: Magical Mystery Book Club #Interview / #Giveaway

Cowboys and Chaos: Magical Mystery Book Club
by Elizabeth Pantley

It is my pleasure to welcome Elizabeth Pantley
to Escape With Dollycas today!

Hi Elizabeth,

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I spent twenty years as a parent educator writing and lecturing about raising babies and young children. When my youngest graduated college, and my first grandchild entered kindergarten I decided to make a leap and write the cozy mystery novel I’d always dreamed of writing. That was two years ago. Once I started writing cozy mysteries, I realized how much of a calling it was! Cowboys and Chaos is the ninth novel I’ve released in those two years! And I’ve never had so much fun in my work!

What books/authors have most inspired you?
I find bits of inspiration in almost every book I read. It seems every author has a character, a scene, a word, or an idea that plants a seed. The seeds combine to inspire me as I create new worlds.

What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?

I write what I know so that my work is authentic. The settings in my series resemble places I know well so that I can describe them in ways that my readers are transported there. Even though I write paranormal fiction, I like there to be a solid foundation of truth and reality. This particular book is set in the Wild West of the 1800s. My husband is a huge fan of old westerns, so I’ve seen quite a few! That built the groundwork for me. Then I picked up a few books on living in the Wild West and spent many hours researching online. What comes together is a place that feels real, even when talking cats are involved!

Do you ever suffer from Writer’s Block?

I think everyone has moments of blockage. I take advantage of those by catching up on all the other work and household tasks that build up when I’m busy writing. A short break away – whether it’s a few hours or a few days seems to reset my brain.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?

My favorite advice is: If you want to be a writer you must read and you must write. Read a lot. Write a lot. Write afraid. Write nervously. Write uncomfortably. Write poorly. But … WRITE! The more you write, the better you will get.

When you are not writing what do you like to do?

As a mother of four young adults who are all paired up, and a young grandchild as well, a large part of my free time is spent with my family. We hike, play board games, talk, eat and have many great family moments.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Here’s a secret. I’ve traveled. A lot. I’ve toured my parenting books all over the US, Canada, Australia, even Hong Kong! I’ve traveled with my family to Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The one place I love to be most? Home! I’d rather be home than travel anywhere else!

What is next on the horizon for you?

I’m in the process of writing book 5 in the Magical Mystery Book Club series: Bakeries and Buffoonery. This isn’t your ordinary book club, you know. The members actually travel into the book! They must solve the mystery to get out. This time, the club chooses a book about a major cake-baking competition, because, well … cake!

Thank you, Elizabeth for visiting today!

Keep reading to find all the info about Cowboys and Chaos.

 About Cowboys and Chaos

Cowboys and Chaos: Magical Mystery Book Club
Paranormal Cozy Mystery

Setting – Current Day AND the Wild West in the 1880s
Better Beginnings, Inc. (November 20, 2022)

This is no ordinary book club! When the group chooses a book, they are whisked away from reality to find themselves totally immersed in the story. The characters, the setting, and the murder all come to life. In order to exit the book, they’ll need to solve the mystery and reach The End.

This time, the club chooses a mystery that takes place in a quaint western town – in the old Wild West. That sounds like great fun, until they arrive in the dusty old town in the Arizona desert, among cowboys and saloons. They discover that the outhouse isn’t the worse thing about this trip.

The good news is that Paige, Glo, Zell, Frank, and the other members of the club discover plenty of surprises here, and they have a great time visiting a piece of history. They’ll get to live through many exciting moments as they unravel this cozy mystery story.

Cozy Wednesday featuring Through the Liquor Glass (A Literary Pub Mystery) by Sarah Fox #Review @TheWriteFox @KensingtonBooks

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am delighted to feature Sarah Fox’s new book,
Through the Liquor Glass today!

Through the Liquor Glass (A Literary Pub Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
5th in Series
Setting – Vermont
Kensington Cozies (November 29, 2022)
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 304 pages

In the picturesque New England town of Shady Creek, Vermont, fall is in full swing, and Sadie Coleman, owner of the literary-themed Inkwell pub, is serving up delicious food and drinks—with a side of sleuthing . . .

Autumn brings a wonderland of color and atmosphere to Vermont. As the last leaves fall from the trees, the town is gearing up for a new festival: A Taste of Shady Creek. Pub proprietor Sadie Coleman is looking forward to visitors coming to sample her literary-themed cocktails. She’s a little more wary about her mother’s impending first visit. What if her mom doesn’t like Sadie’s adopted town—or her new boyfriend, Grayson Blake?

Those concerns are overshadowed when a food critic is found dead at Grayson’s craft brewery, pinned under a barrel. Curiouser and curiouser—the victim is linked to Grayson’s past as a private investigator, and all the evidence points to him as the killer. While Grayson lays low, Sadie starts some investigating of her own, diving down a rabbit hole of suspects. Was it a bad review that made the killer mad as a hatter? Or are there other motives at play?

In between serving Kiss of the Cider Woman cocktails and book-minded bites to festivalgoers, Sadie is striving to clear Grayson’s name. But it’ll take more than a dash of ingenuity to prevent the festival from fizzing out completely—and stop a killer from downing another innocent life . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It’s Autumn in Vermont and it is the first year of the A Taste of Shady Creek Festival and Inkwell owner Sadie Coleman is excited to share her literary-themed cocktails with all the visitors at the event. Her mother is also coming to town for the first time and she wants everything to be perfect when she arrives. She wants to show off her new business and introduce her to her friends including her craft brewery boyfriend, Grayson Blake. She is so nervous her mother will not like anything about her new life in Vermont, especially now that another murder has occurred. A murder where Grayson is the prime suspect. With the evidence mounting against him, he disappears while he tries to find proof that he had nothing to do with the murder. Sadie misses him terribly and refuses to stand by and do nothing. Can she chase down a killer, run her pub, and entertain her mother all at the same time? Time will tell.

This is one of my favorite series. I anxiously await each new book to catch up with Sadie and all her friends in Shady Creek. The Inkwell is such a unique pub where people can partake in literary-themed cocktails and food while surrounded by books. Book clubs meet there and Sadie comes up with several bookish events plus it’s a great place to meet with friends and relax. I’ve said it before and will say it again, the Inkwell is my fictional happy place.

Ms. Fox has developed fantastic characters over the course of the series. Sadie continues to grow more confident and is becoming a great amateur sleuth. I love how her relationship is progressing with Grayson. With him in hot water this time she is really tested. She wants to not only find the true killer but find Grayson. Not having any idea where he is and if he is safe was so hard on her. I really enjoyed that her mother came to town. She was totally different than what I was expecting.  I was also happy that some secondary characters played a larger role in this story. It was nice to get to know them a little better. The new characters introduced were well crafted as well.

The author plotted out quite a mystery. We all know that Grayson had to be innocent but when a part of his past along with the people involved show up in the idyllic Shady Creek it does give us pause especially when he takes off instead of defending himself. This led to a very fast-paced and exciting story. I was completely in the dark until everything came to a head. I was happy with the way the drama played out and that we learned the whole story after the culprit was caught,

Through the Liquor Glass was such an entertaining mystery. It checks all the cozy boxes and left me wanting more! I can’t wait for my next visit to Shady Creek!

Longing is Violet Dusk: A Hazel Dean Mystery by Josalyn McAllister #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Longing is Violet Dusk: A Hazel Dean Mystery
by Josalyn McAllister

About Longing is Violet Dusk

Longing is Violet Dusk: A Hazel Dean Mystery
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting – Georgia
Eburnean Books (September 27, 2022)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 302 pages
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 979-8987053201
Digital ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0BDD6J18R

After a stressful foray into crime fighting, Hazel Dean is relieved to resume normality, taking care of her family and book shop–until her ability to see emotions in color pulls her into another crisis.

One night at book club, Hazel sees a swirl of jarring purple, blue and black encompass a young mother. Realizing that the woman might be in trouble, Hazel recommends a book that she hopes will provide some comfort and guidance.

To her horror, the young mother goes missing the following week. Hazel feels responsible and becomes obsessed with finding her. But the search isn’t the only thing Hazel is juggling. She’s also trying to help the missing woman’s children, evade a young reporter, and deal with the sudden reappearance of an old high school flame.

With all of Hazel’s efforts, can the missing woman be found before it’s too late?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Hazel Dean has a special gift. She can see people’s emotions in living colors and she uses the ability to find them the perfect book at her bookstore. During book club, she sees a rash of purple, blue and black surrounding a young mother. She then gives the woman a book she believes will help her but a few days later the woman goes missing in the forest. Hazel is beside herself with worry that the book she gave her may have led to her disappearance. She soon feels an overwhelming need to find her and get her back to her family.

While the search continues Hazel finds out her old high school boyfriend is back in town because of his parent’s failing health. His brother has also returned, and he just happens to be the missing woman’s high school boyfriend. Could he have something to do with why the woman went missing? Hazel hopes to put all the colorful clues together to find out.

Hazel Dean is an interesting protagonist. Most people would be overwhelmed by a “gift” like hers but after all these years I suppose it is just normal for her. I do like the way she uses it to match people to a certain book but this time we saw the heaviness it puts on her when she may have made a mistake. Her husband, Jason is just one of the small group that knows about her abilities. He is very understanding, but with an old boyfriend back in town who appears to have desires to rekindle his relationship with Hazel, he is a little tested. Plus one of their teenage sons suddenly has a girlfriend and the other is crushing on a reporter. Hazel is just not ready for that. So on top of Hazel’s colorful emotions, they still deal with realistic family issues.

Nina had some issues that she thought could be helped by some time alone, but when she didn’t come home on time her husband alerted the authorities. It was great the way the town came together to help search for her. Nina had been attending the book club at Books and Chocolate for years, so that is how she knew Hazel. I was a little surprised at how enmeshed Hazel became in the search and the aftermath. She really felt responsible. Her Uncle John, the police captain, really leaned on her too in a way that was definitely not the norm but that did not deter from my enjoyment of the series.

Ms. McAllister has written a complicated mystery and it flows at a brisk pace with some extraordinary twists including some after it seemed the case was solved. There were some moments when one character or another raised my hackles but I never expected the book to end the way it did. Again, like with Guilt is Midnight Blue, this story evoked a lot of emotions in me. I would have loved to see what colors appeared around me as I was reading.

Longing is Violet Dusk is a great addition to this series but I do recommend reading Guilt is Midnight Blue to meet the core characters from the start. I am excited for this series to continue.

#FlashbackFriday – Dead Ringer (A Mattie Winston Mystery) by Annelise Ryan #Review / #Giveaway @ryan_annelise

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you
the books I was not able to review
when they were first released that have been screaming at me
from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Dead Ringer (A Mattie Winston Mystery)
Hard Boiled Mystery
11th in Series
Setting – Wisconsin
‎Kensington (February 25, 2020)
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 336 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1496722558
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1496722553
Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B07R7S242R

A new murder victim with an old M.O. puts Mattie Winston on the trail of a killer who gives a grim new meaning to flower power . . .

Spring is beginning to brighten Sorenson, Wisconsin, for Mattie and Steve Hurley and their family. While their son Matthew may be in his terrible twos and Steve’s daughter Emily a moody teenager, the kids bring light to their lives when their work is dark by its nature—Steve is a homicide detective and Mattie is a medicolegal death investigator, aka medical examiner. They deal in corpses.

The latest corpse, a Jane Doe, was clearly an addict, but drugs didn’t kill her, at least not directly. She’s been stabbed multiple times in a pattern that is disturbingly familiar to Mattie. When she discovers flower petals from yellow carnations stuffed into the stab wounds, she recognizes a very specific M.O.—belonging to a convicted serial killer who’s currently serving a life sentence.

The details of the flower petals were never made public in the last case, so it can’t be a copycat crime. It looks like the wrong man is in prison, and the murderer is still at large. Now it’s up to Mattie and Steve to get the case reopened—and catch the real carnation killer . . .

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Homicide Detective Steve Hurley and his new wife Medicolegal Death Investigator Mattie Winston have a new case involving a Jane Doe. During the autopsy, Mattie realizes the wounds and what is stuffed in them are familiar, a Dead Ringer for another case. She had recently been at a conference where a colleague from Eau Claire described the M.O. of a serial killer that he helped send to prison. A key piece of evidence was never publicized so unless that was somehow leaked there is no way this death could be the work of a copycat. While Mattie and Hurley work to solve their case they also dig deeper into the case upstate. Knowing that the wrong man could be behind bars pushes them to tie the cases together to catch the real killer.

I continue to be drawn in by these characters. They are so genuine and have real-life issues everyone can identify with. Mattie is a strong woman and Hurley is a strong man but each has their insecurities. They both excel at their occupations because they are driven to find the truth but at home, they question certain parts of their lives. They are getting settled in their new home and are raising a teenage daughter and a toddler son and at times worry if they are giving the children everything they need especially with their recent news. Jealousy also rears its ugly head within these pages adding more tension to their chaotic lives. Ms. Ryan has let her characters evolve realistically from Matthew’s terrible twos to Emily’s dating.  Mattie and Hurley’s relationship isn’t all sunshine and roses,  it has some bumps in the road. Izzy and Dom are dealing with a new baby and Izzy’s mother. Other relationships are developing between the secondary characters too.  All the characters have become like old friends that I love to visit.

The mystery that Steve and Mattie have on their hands is very compelling. Ms. Ryan plotted this one out so well. The interaction between police departments is tense with the coroner’s offices do their best to work together. Mattie is like a dog with a bone and goes to great lengths to follow every clue. Again, she finds herself in hot water and that brought me right to the edge of my seat. When all was revealed I was a bit shocked but it made sense and the clues were all there, I was just so caught up in the story I failed to put them all together.

I love the way the author tours the state of Wisconsin. This time linking Sorenson and Portage with Eau Claire. Traveling up and down the highway and recognizing familiar places with the characters in this series is always a good time even when trying to solve a murder.

Dead Ringer is the 11th book in this series and the author has kept the characters fresh and wrapped them in yet another complicated mystery. It was another Perfect Escape for me and knowing there is just one more book in this series I really didn’t want this book to end.

A Twist of Murder (A Dickens of a Crime)
by Heather Redmond
Kensington (October 25, 2022)

In Victorian England, aspiring author Charles Dickens is on the case again—in pursuit of missing orphans, legendary treasure, and a cold-blooded killer in the latest installment of Heather Redmond’s charming series that reimagines the famous writer as an amateur sleuth.

Harrow-on-the-Hill, March 1836: In a sense, orphans Ollie, John, and Arthur have always been treasure hunters. The mudlarks have gone from a hardscrabble life scavenging the banks of the Thames for bits and bobs to becoming students at a boarding school outside of London, thanks to the kind and generous intercession of Charles Dickens. But now they’re missing—as is, apparently, a treasure map.

When Charles arrives at the school, he’s hit with another twist—the servant girl who was allegedly in possession of the map has been strangled in the icehouse. Unbeknownst to them on their spirited adventure, his young friends may be in mortal danger. Now Charles and his fiancée Kate Hogarth, who has come to join him in the search for the runaways, must artfully dodge false leads and red herrings to find the boys and the map—before X marks the spot of their graves . . .

A Trace of Poison:
A Riveting Historical Mystery Set in the Home of Agatha Christie
(A Phyllida Bright Mystery)

by Colleen Cambridge
Kensington (October 25, 2022)

In this captivating English murder mystery from an acclaimed author, Agatha Christie’s housekeeper must uncover the killer amongst a throng of crime writers.

In England’s stately manor houses, murder is not generally a topic for polite conversation. Mallowan Hall, home to Agatha Christie and her husband, Max, is the exception. And housekeeper Phyllida Bright delights in discussing gory plot details with her friend and employer . . .

The neighboring village of Listleigh has also become a hub of grisly goings-on, thanks to a Murder Fête organized to benefit a local orphanage. Members of The Detection Club—a group of celebrated authors such as G.K. Chesterton, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Agatha herself—will congregate for charitable events, including a writing contest for aspiring authors. The winner gets an international publishing contract, and entrants have gathered for a cocktail party—managed by the inimitable Phyllida—when murder strikes too close even for her comfort.

It seems the victim imbibed a poisoned cocktail intended for Alastair Whittlesby, president of the local writers’ club. The insufferable Whittlesby is thought to be a shoo-in for the prize, and ambition is certainly a worthy motive. But narrowing down these suspects could leave even Phyllida’s favorite fictional detective, M. Poirot, twirling his mustache in frustration.

It’s a mystery too intriguing for Phyllida to resist, but one fraught with duplicity and danger, for every guest is an expert in murder—and how to get away with it . . .

The Secret of the Lost Pearls (A Useful Woman Mystery)
by Darcie Wilde
Kensington (December 27, 2022)

Beyond the glittering ballrooms and elegant parties of Regency London lurk all manner of unexpected dangers. In Darcie Wilde’s captivating mystery series inspired by the novels of Jane Austen and written with the wit of “Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s cheeky asides in Fleabag” (Bookpage), no one is better equipped to help ladies who find themselves wronged than “useful woman” Rosalind Thorne…

Rosalind Thorne may not have a grand fortune of her own, but she possesses virtues almost as prized by the haut ton: discretion, and a web of connections that enable her to discover just about anything about anyone. Known as a “most useful woman,” Rosalind helps society ladies in need—for a modest fee, of course—and her client roster is steadily increasing. Mrs. Gerald Douglas, née Bethany Hodgeson, presents Rosalind with a particularly delicate predicament. A valuable pearl necklace has gone missing, and Bethany’s husband believes the thief is Nora, Bethany’s disgraced sister. Nora made a scandalous elopement at age sixteen and returned three years later, telling the family that her husband was dead. But as Rosalind begins her investigations, under cover of helping the daughters of the house prepare for their first London season, she realizes that the family harbors even more secrets than scandals. The intrigue swirling around the Douglases includes fraud, forgery, blackmail, and soon, murder. And it will fall to Rosalind, aided by charming Bow Street officer Adam Harkness, to untangle the shocking truth and discover who is a thief—and who is a killer.

Murder at the Majestic Hotel (A Stella and Lyndy Mystery)
by Clara McKenna
Kensington (October 25, 2022)

Against all expectations in Edwardian England, newly married American heiress Stella Kendrick and British aristocrat Viscount “Lyndy” Lyndhurst are bucking traditions—and investigating murder—on their honeymoon in the latest installment of the Stella & Lyndy Mysteries from acclaimed author Clara McKenna.

Leaving behind tragedies surrounding their wedding at Morrington Hall, travel-worn Stella and Lyndy arrive at the grand Majestic Hotel in York to more misfortune—their stately honeymoon suite has been given away to Horace Wingrove, owner of England’s largest confectionery. Stella refuses to let an innocent booking mistake spoil the mood, but her optimism vanishes when Horace suffocates in the room where she and Lyndy should have stayed . . .

Unlike authorities on the scene, Stella can’t believe the business magnate’s death can be explained away as an accident. Troubling signs are everywhere—strange murmurs in the hallway, tight-lipped hotel staff, and a stolen secret recipe for Wingrave’s famous chocolate. Then there are Horace’s murky intentions for visiting the historic cathedral city, and those who were closely watching his every move . . .

As Stella and Lyndy tour Yorkshire and mingle with royals as husband and wife, they face a sinister mystery that puts their vows to the test. Can the couple work together to discover the truth about their romantic destination and the strange happenings haunting their trip before they’re treated to another terrifying surprise?

Bestselling author Tess Harrow and her teenage daughter Gertrude have decided to make Winthrop their home. Their cabin is fixed up and now they’re turning to the family hardware store that Tess inherited from her late grandfather into the town’s first independent bookstore.

But when renovations unearth bones from a cold case and send them toppling—literally—onto Tess’s head, the work comes to a grinding halt. With the whole town convinced that her grandfather was a serial killer, Tess has to call in a fellow horror author for reinforcements. Together, they’ll come up with a perfect story to make all the clues fit…and solve a mystery more than thirty years in the making.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this second By the Book Mystery Tess and Gertrude Harrow have made themselves at home in their cabin so Tess is ready to start renovations to turn her grandfather’s hardware store into the bookstore of her dreams. That is until the demolition sends some bones literally falling down on her head. The bones are linked to a 30-year-old cold case. Tess is beside herself with worry when most of the town is sure her grandfather was a serial killer.  Tess needs help proving them wrong so she asks an author friend to come for a visit hoping together they can gather the intel and sort through the clues to explain what really happened and clear her grandfather’s name in the process.

Just like in the first book, Buried in a Good Book, Tess spends most of her time thinking about murder and turning her present-day situation into her next book. The story starts out with her testing a theory she wants to use in a book. Still, when bones start falling means, motive, and opportunity become her focus, not only for the actual bones that surround her but tasking her with the way to fictionalize it for her bestselling series successfully. Tess is an interesting protagonist because of this. Readers are treated to her writing process and where she gets her ideas, even though they are hitting very close to home.

Her teenage daughter Gertrude is very mature and understands what is happening around her. She is even willing to help her mom in any way she can. This character has grown a lot since the start of the previous book.

I really enjoyed that part of the mystery dug into Sheriff Boyd’s past and that the cold case affected him in a personal way. He really touched me in the last book and I am so appreciative that we got to know him better. With the subject matter, he understandably was a little more somber throughout the story but that made him even more real. Sheriff Boyd is joined by several other characters we met in the first book too. They all have continued to develop nicely. Tess does get an assistant to help with her renovations with a surprising background. He quickly becomes entangled in everything happening as does Tess’s author friend Peter. All the characters are well-defined and believable.

The mystery was pretty twisted up. Tess had her job cut out for her and she had to find people who remembered what happened all those years ago. I was surprised by a key piece of evidence that was driving her quest. It really drew me in and kept the pages flipping at a rapid pace. Even with that, I was taken aback when everything was revealed.

The thing I really love about Ms. Berry’s writing style is the way she uses humor. She gives us readers plenty to laugh about, sometimes out loud. The way the characters interact and some of the situations they find themselves in are just so darn funny. It starts from page one. Tess is doing something at first that is suspenseful until the author draws back the scene curtain. At first, I was just shaking my head but that led to a downright giggle. And of course, then there was a twist and things get serious.

I thoroughly enjoyed On Spine of Death and I am excited to see that the series continues with Murder Off the Books coming out on May 30, 2023. I am excited to see what happens next in the crazy town where there never seems to be a dull moment.
