#Spotlight / #Giveaway – Better Dead (A B&B Spirits Mystery) by Pamela Kopfler @KensingtonBooks

Better Dead (A B&B Spirits Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Setting – Louisiana
Kensington (December 26, 2017)
Mass Market Paperback: 375 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1496713216
Kindle ASIN: B06XZJJ9WP

As the owner of a charming Louisiana bed and breakfast, Holly Davis believes in Southern hospitality—but she draws the line at welcoming the ghost of her cheating husband . . .

Burl Davis checked out of this life a little earlier than expected—before Holly could serve him with divorce papers over his extramarital flings. Unfortunately, it was not before he nearly bankrupted her beloved B&B, Holly Grove, a converted plantation that has been in her family for generations. Holly would never wish anyone dead, but three months later she’s feeling a lot more relief than grief.

Until Burl’s ghost appears as an unwelcome guest. Before his spirit can move on, her not-so-dearly departed needs Holly’s human help to bust up the drug smuggling ring he was involved with. She has reservations, to say the least, but agrees to assist him if he’ll make a show of haunting the B&B to draw in visitors. But when Holly’s former love, Jack McCann, mysteriously resurfaces in town and checks in, she has to wonder if her B&B is big enough for the ghost of her husband and the very real physical presence of her old flame . . .

About the Author
Pamela Kopfler is Southern-fried and sassy. She writes award-winning humorous mysteries with a kick of Southern sass. Her debut novel, BETTER DEAD, is the first in her B & B Spirits mystery series.

She can stir up a roux, mix a cocktail, shoot anything (as long as it doesn’t have eyes), and loves swapping stories. Putting words on the page keeps her alligator mouth from overloading her hummingbird heinie in real life. It doesn’t hurt to be married to a saint who is an attorney either. She marks her time on earth by the lives of the dogs she has loved and who often show up in her stories. Her current fur baby is a seventy-pound pup in black. He thinks he’s a fearless hunter when he’s not pretending he’s a lapdog.

Pamela lives in South Louisiana where the spirits are restless, the food is spicy, and the living is divine.

Print Length: 214 pages

Sirens ring. Are you listening? Near Candy Cane Lane. A Body is glistening. A murderous sight. Trubble’s investigating tonight. Walking through this winter wonderland.

It’s the week before Christmas and Investigative Journalist Penelope Trubble has reluctantly agreed to investigate the death of a woman at the Sleighs & Slopes Adventure Resort in the hopes of exonerating her her husband—who just happens to be Penny’s ex. But with so many suspicious characters lurking in the trees, Penelope risks being strangled by clues, Christmas lights, conjecture, and catastrophe. It doesn’t help that Penny’s still a little frosty with the man accused of icing his bride, and she must prove he’s no cold-blooded killer. At least there’s candy-cane cocoa, a roaring fire, and the Laurentian Mountains to savor—not to mention the hunky detective dashing through the snow after her.

Helping an ex is a slippery slope, and things are going downhill fast for Penelope Trubble.

#Special Guest – Heather Haven – Author of The Culinary Art of Murder – #Spotlight / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

An Interview with Heather Haven

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born in Sarasota, Florida, during the winter hiatus of the circus. I spent most of my life in bathing suits, as kids who are born in southern Florida usually do. In fact, I know what year is what when I see myself in a particular bathing suit in scrapbooks. I always wrote. I started out by putting lyrics to any musical numbers I heard on the radio. My first paying writing job was when I was seventeen. I wrote a gossip column for the Miami Beach Sun on the happenings of residents in a Miami Beach condo. I got paid $25 a week! For a kid back in the Punic Wars, that was a lot of money. After college, I headed for New York City. Among other things, I had several off-off-Broadway plays produced, wrote ad copy for No Soap Radio, and worked backstage on Broadway doing costumes. When my husband and I moved to California, I began writing novels. It’s been a fun ride. I am very blessed.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

  • I like to say I was born on a trunk at Ringling Brothers’ Circus, instead of Judy Garland’s song, I Was Born In A Trunk At The Princess Theater. My parents met and married during the golden age of the circus. My mother was a performer and my father was an elephant trainer. I have pictures of me sitting atop the head of a baby elephant, Mom and Dad on each side.
  • I like to sing harmony along with my singer/musician husband, but microphones scare me.
  • I wish I could live on a farm and take in unwanted, abused animals.

What is the first book you remember reading?

Uncle Remus. It was a large book, mostly pictures, and I was probably four. At nine, I read my first Nancy Drew book, The Secret of the Old Clock. There was no turning back.

What are you reading now?

I’m in the middle of four books. One’s on Mae West, two mysteries, and a how-to on painting. Where there’s life, there’s hope! As for the mysteries, I am a member of Sisters in Crime, NorCal Chapter. We have a lot of talented authors in the group. I am making it my mission to read at least one published novel by each member. They are really wonderful reads. I probably could spend my life reading nothing but work from this group and never get tired of it.

What made you decide you want to write?

I didn’t have much to say about it. I’ve always been a writer. However, I took an early retirement from Stanford University, where I had a great job, to write full-time. I try to turn out one novel every twelve to fourteen months.

Do you have a special place you like to write?

My office. Small but mighty and right off the kitchen. It used to be the breakfast nook, but with two people, who needs a breakfast nook? Plus I needed, as Virginia Woolf advised, a room of one’s own!

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

I read the papers. Truth is stranger than fiction, for sure. Especially nowadays.

What books have most inspired you?

Too numerous to list. However, P. G. Wodehouse, Carolyn Hart, Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemingway, David Sedaris, John Le Carré, are but a few who inspire me to try to write my best. Shakespeare heads the list. He was beyond a genius. If he ever looks down and sees me, I want him to be able to say, “There’s that Heather Haven again, thinking she can write. Oh, well, she always does her best.”

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

All of it.

What do you think makes a good story?

Something that rings true. Fiction shines a light on the truth. Throw in a funny line every now and then, and you’ve got something.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

Most of them have a few of my traits here and there. That’s always a good starting place, but as the characters solidify in my mind, they become less and less like me.

Why did you pick your particular genre?

I don’t like stuff that’s too heavy. I want to think about something, not cry about it. If I want a good cry, I can always pick up the real estate section of the San Francisco Chronicle.

What makes your books different from others out there in this genre?

My books are written on many levels. Scratch the surface and you’ll discover a darker place than you thought would be there. But if you don’t want to scratch, sit back, have a good laugh, and an adventure that has a happy ending. Life is for living, but it can be tough.  We need to be positive, upbeat and do our best. At night, when we lay our heads on the pillow, we need to know that no matter what the outcome, we did our best. That’s all we can ask of ourselves. Further, my work is dedicated to families of all types everywhere.  When we are fortunate to share our lives with others, bound by love and hopes for a good future, we are, indeed, a family. And very blessed.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

The sky’s the limit, Toots, the sky’s the limit.

Thank you, Heather, for being my guest today!

Now let me tell you about her latest cozy mystery!

More About the Author

After studying drama at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida, Heather went to Manhattan to pursue a career. There she wrote short stories, novels, comedy acts, television treatments, ad copy, commercials, and two one-act plays, produced at several places, such as Playwrights Horizon. Once she even ghostwrote a book on how to run an employment agency. She was unemployed at the time.

One of her first paying jobs was writing a love story for a book published by Bantam called Moments of Love. She had a deadline of one week but promptly came down with the flu. Heather wrote “The Sands of Time” with a raging temperature, and delivered some pretty hot stuff because of it. Her stint at New York City’s No Soap Radio – where she wrote comedic ad copy – help develop her long-time love affair with comedy.

Her first novel of the humorous Alvarez Family Murder Mysteries, Murder is a Family Business, is a winner of the Single Titles Reviewers’ Choice Award 2011. The second, A Wedding to Die For, received finalist nods from both Global and EPIC’s for Best eBook Mystery of the Year, 2012. It also won the Editors and Predators silver, 2012. The third of the series, Death Runs in the Family, won the Global Gold 2013. The fourth installment, Dead…If Only, won Global Silver 2015. The CEO Came DOA, Book Five, won the Global Gold Medal 2017 and Dan Poynter Legacy Award 2017. The Culinary Art of Murder is the sixth book of the series.

Katie LeClair has finally settled down as the new doctor in Baxter, MI. After years of moving, schooling, and training, she wants nothing more than to find a place she can call home, and a small town outside of Ann Arbor seemed perfect.

Katie quickly gets to work in building a life for herself in Baxter, and beyond reviving her love life, she also finds a pair of business partners in a team of father and son family practitioners. But that idyllic dream is immediately shattered when one of her patients is found dead. That wouldn’t be the worst thing, except the death is ruled a suicide, and as evidence has it, the suicide was a result of the medication Katie had prescribed. But she doesn’t remember writing it.

When a closer investigation reveals it was murder, Katie is catapulted into an off-the-books investigation that leads her down a dark path of past secrets. But someone is willing to kill to keep part of the town’s history in the shadows, and Katie must race to find out who before it’s too late in nationally bestselling author Dawn Eastman’s riveting series debut Unnatural Causes.

Praise For Unnatural Causes: A Dr. Katie LeClair Mystery

Wow!
This is a step up from a cozy but not as dark and most police type procedural novel . . .I liked getting to know Katie as the story progressed. I definitely want to get to know her better in upcoming books.

Murder at a Mermaid Nightclub

The enchanted village of Bijou Mer’s on high alert, with the villainous Horace on the loose. Imogen’s excited to escape the tension with a trip to the underwater Mermaid Kingdom to bake for the young mermaid queen’s engagement to the pirate king.

But when the mermaids turn out to be less French Riviera and more Jersey shore, the bakers are wrapped up in their world of clubbing in sea caves and fighting off seals for the best tanning spots, and are embroiled in a pirate smuggling scandal. It gets worse when a member of the mermaid court is found dead in a fishing net, and one of Imogen and Maple’s baked goods seems to be the murder weapon.

Imogen tries to fish out the real murderer to clear their names, while struggling with her romantic feelings for Hank. At the same time, she’s working with him to learn to control her magic and investigate Horace’s riddle and her own mysterious past.

As the mermaid court’s freewheeling lifestyle rubs off on the bakers, the gang lets loose and passions rise to the surface. But with a giant octopus crawling the ocean floor, the mermaid court filled with simmering secrets and scandals, and the ever present threat of the Badlands Army, Imogen must solve the murder before she ends up fish food herself.

In Laura Childs’s New York Times bestselling mystery series, Suzanne, Petra, and Toni—co-owners of the Cackleberry Club café—are back to track down another bad egg…

Maintaining good personal relationships with their suppliers is one of the secrets of the Cackleberry Club café’s success, so Suzanne doesn’t mind going out to Mike Mullen’s dairy farm to pick up some wheels of cheese. She’s looking forward to a nice visit with the mild-mannered farmer before heading back to their hectic kitchen.

But when she arrives, Mike’s nowhere to be found. The moaning of his cows leads her to look in the barn, where she discovers a bloodcurdling sight—the farmer’s dead body. Apparently, not everyone was as fond of Mike Mullen as the Cackleberry Club.

Churning with grief and outrage, Suzanne, Petra, and Toni vow to find the farmer’s murderer—but as they get closer to the truth, the desperate killer gets whipped into a frenzy and plans to put the squeeze on them…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

“Welcome to Kindred and The Cackleberry Club. Your hosts are Suzanne, Petra, and Toni. Pull up a stool, check out today’s specials, feel free to visit the Book Nook and the Knitting Nest. We hope you enjoy your visit.” That’s the friendly greeting I would expect to receive from these three fantastic characters. Business partners, friends, family. These ladies are part of a tight-knit community. It is almost Halloween when the town is shocked by another murder. Suzanne finds dairy farmer Mike Mullen killed in a very brutal way and she is not going to rest until she finds the killer. The sheriff tries to keep her from butting in but he knows she is going to do it anyway. Oh and I can’t forget to mention, she is supposed to be planning her wedding…

I love this series. I love these characters. I love this town. Laura Childs has created such a treat for cozy readers. This is the 7th book in the series and each time I start one it feels like I am visiting a bunch of good friends. It really has the small town feeling that I am very familiar with. Everyone seems to genuinely care about their friends and neighbors, making it very difficult to pinpoint the suspects and the guilty party. With her signature twists, that I know now to expect, she scrambled my theories more than once. The main plot is clever and creative. All the subplots blend in nicely. There are moments of uncertainty and anticipation tempered by some humor and romance.

Junior’s wild ideas always make me chuckle but I feel bad for Toni at the same time. She loves the guy but no matter how old he is, he is never going to be the strong, dependable man she is looking for. Petra continues to amaze me with her kitchen creations and how she keeps up with everything going on around her. Sam is ready for his big wedding day but Suzanne has way too much going on around her to concentrate on any plans. She always seems to be going a mile a minute in different directions. He loves her for the way she is and is happy for any time they get to spend together.

This is a truly entertaining read. It’s not too late for anyone to “drop” in on this series. Start with this one, the first one or any in between. They are all egg-cellent cozies! And yes, there are recipes!

When Monteverdi’s lost operas surface, so does a killer desperate to possess them. . .

Preoccupied with preparations for the opera season at Eszterháza, Kapellmeister Joseph Haydn receives a curious request from a friend in Vienna. Kaspar, an impoverished violinist with an ailing wife, wishes Haydn to evaluate a collection of scores reputed to be the lost operas of Monteverdi.

Haydn is intrigued until Her Majesty, Empress Maria Theresa, summons him with a similar request. Skeptical of the value of Kaspar’s bequest, Haydn nevertheless offers to help. But before he can examine the works, Kaspar is murdered—beaten and left to die in front of a wine tavern.

The police are quick to dismiss the death as a robbery gone wrong. But Haydn is not so sure. Kaspar’s keys were stolen and his house broken into. Could his bequest be genuine after all? And can Haydn find the true operas—and the man willing to kill for them?

Author Interview – Suzanne Trauth

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a multi-genre writer. I started out writing screenplays and then transitioned to novels and plays. Since my background is in dramatic works, I focus a lot on plot and dialogue in my Dodie O’Dell Mystery Series.

What are three things most people don’t know about you?

I have had play readings at a number of theatres in the New York/New Jersey area and a number of years ago, I co-wrote a play about Hurricane Katrina survivors in New Orleans. I also wrote and directed a short film. But I am a mystery book lover at heart. I once stayed home from work to finish a novel!

What is the first book you remember reading?

I remember being read to at a very early age but Nancy Drew mysteries and the Bobbsey Twins series stand out.

What are you reading now?

I am reading several books now: AMERICANAH, Louise Penny’s series (specifically A FATAL GRACE) and ASTROPHYSICS FOR PEOPLE IN A HURRY!

What made you decide you want to write?

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to write! In grade school and high school, I tinkered with plays and short stories. But then I got caught up with theatre and my focus shifted away from writing. But fortunately I found my way back about twenty years ago and now I am focused on my mystery series.

Do you have a special place you like to write?

I generally do most of my writing in a home office in northern New Jersey. But I do take notes everywhere… Snippets of conversation, character ideas, everywhere I go it seems I find material!

Where do the ideas for your books come from?

Now that I have a series going, there is a town and its inhabitants that lay the groundwork for each novel. But each novel also introduces new characters, so many ideas come from them! The characters speak to me…Ideas also are generated by the play that I have chosen for each novel. For example, the first Dodie O’Dell mystery featured ROMEO AND JULIET so the play was a springboard for the setting, character interaction, and murder mystery.

What books have most inspired you?

In the mystery world, I am truly inspired by Elizabeth George and Louise Penny. Each of their series provides food for thought, exceptionally well-plotted stories with strong and engaging characters. In the non-mystery world, I love to read a range of authors. ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE stands out. I love books set during World War II.

Is there anything about writing you find most challenging?

For me getting the first draft down can be a challenge. Thoughts and ideas tumble out while I am trying to adhere to a very loose outline. Once the draft is finished and I start the next draft, it can be a challenge to establish clues, investigative procedures, and red herrings! I want to keep the reader engaged but not give away the end of the book.

What do you think makes a good story?

I think all of the standard elements must be present for a good story: well-drawn characters, a strong setting, believable and interesting dialogue. And then the X factor…that extra something that really pulls in the reader and makes her want to stay up all night, or skip work, to finish.

Which, of all your characters, do you think is the most like you?

Hmmm…great question. I suppose I see myself in several characters. Dodie’s management skills, adventurous spirit, and sense of humor; Walter’s wacky rehearsal exercises; Lola’s friendship.

Why did you pick your particular genre?

Write what you know? Or at least write what you enjoy…I have loved mystery novels since I was a grade schooler, beginning with Nancy Drew. Reading a mystery novel is like solving a puzzle and puzzles fascinate me.

What makes your books different form others out there in this genre?

There are so many wonderful mystery series out there…when I started in on the Dodie O’Dell books, I decided to place the mysteries within the context of a small town restaurant (the Winderjammer) and community theatre (the Etonville Little Theatre). So, I am combining food and theatre. I think that combination might be unique.

What’s next on the horizon for you?

RUNNING OUT OF TIME is the third book in the Dodie O’Dell Mystery Series. Book number four—JUST IN TIME—will appear in the fall of 2018. Books five and six are already in the planning stages…

Thank you, Suzanne, for being my guest today!

Restaurant manager Dodie O’Dell’s themed food ideas have been called cute, clever, and delicious, but never revolutionary—until now. Dodie’s Windjammer Restaurant is stocking the Etonville Little Theatre’s concession stand with colonial-era desserts and drinks: Swamp Yankee applesauce cake, pumpkin bread, hot cider punch, and mulled wine to complement the latest production. A local playwright has adapted Thornton Wilder’s Our Town into Eton Town, shifting the story to colonial America and the founding of Etonville, New Jersey, shortly after the Revolutionary War.

On opening night, hours before the curtain rises, Dodie runs into an agitated actress backstage with blood on her hands. Then a stranger is found among the chairs set for a graveyard scene with a knife in his chest. The show will not go on—the theatre is now a crime scene. Hoping to clear the red-handed suspect, Dodie returns to the role of amateur sleuth to mull over the clues and beat the backstage stabber to the punch—before someone else becomes history . . .
