Sunday Salon / Sunday Post – Reading Challenges – Weekly Rewind – Mail Call

The Sunday Salon used to be a meme but was getting so huge it became unmanageable, so it is now a Facebook group that has become an
informal week in review gathering place for bloggers.

It is also a place to share our thoughts about things of a bookish nature.

A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

It’s that time of year when we start working hard to finish up our Reading Challenges and start to plan our challenges for next year. I know I will be hosting the Alphabet Soup Reading Challenge, the Literary Escapes Reading Challenge, and the Craving for Cozies Challenge again. I will be adding the Author Edition of Alphabet Soup Challenge which will use the author’s name instead of the book title.

I have been doing well on most of my challenges this year but I have two I probably won’t complete. I will definitely have traveled to 42 states and 6 places abroad for the Literary Escapes Challenges but may not be able to squeeze in the rest of the destinations. I also overcommitted on the Strictly Print Challenge. I thought I would read as many print as digital books this year but that has not been the case. I love my Kindle Paperwhite and it has been reading much more digitally, plus publishers are moving away even more from sending print copies for review.

Do you participate in Reading Challenges? How are you doing this year? Do you have any ideas for new challenges?

You can see all my challenges and my progress here

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Another year of football is in the books. All the kids played well. We lost yesterday 19 – 21 but they had a winning season and everyone is looking forward to next year. For Kaden and the rest of the 5th graders, next year means the end of flags and really tackling. Should be interesting.  It was windy and chilly but we all had fun supporting the team and cheering for Diesel, aka Kaden. Because there is no school on Monday he came home with us and quickly hooked up with his FortNite friends on the Xbox 🙂 At least he is in the living room so I can see him having fun.  Yeah, he is at the age where grandparents just smile and nod and try to grab a hug whenever we can. I stole several Remington hugs earlier today because he will be spending his no school Monday with his other grandma. Natalie was at the pumpkin patch today with her other set of grandparents. Pumpkins – they are on my agenda for next weekend.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

My week started out great when the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the National League Central Division and are in the playoffs! Mr. Dollycas was so happy.

Then that evening we celebrated my BFF’S birthday with a surprise party here in Wisconsin. We had so much fun but the evening passed too quickly and they headed back to Kentucky early the next morning. I hope they can break away and head our way again soon.

The week then kind of went downhill as I was caught up in all the political debauchery. I was ready to move on when Kaden arrived Friday evening so we could take him to his game yesterday. The rain passed over and the game was played but the field they played on was unreachable for me and my wheelchair. The ground was too wet and the gravel/dirt road was filled with huge puddles. Mr. Dollycas and Daughter #2 made the trek and witnessed Kaden have a great game, 3 Sacks! The game ended tied 13 – 13. While disappointed at missing the game, I did have my Kindle with me and finished one book and started another 🙂 Next week is the last game for the year and I know I can get to that field. I can hardly wait!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Summer tv is over and I was thrilled that Kaycee won Big Brother. Now the new television season has begun. I love the new Chicago Wednesdays with Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD, all on one night. I am excited about The Good Doctor, The Voice, Law & Order SVU, Grey’s Anatomy, This Is Us, and Blue Bloods too. I did DVR two new shows as well, New Amsterdam and Manifest. I also DVR How to Get Away With Murder but save those for binge watching. Good thing I can read and watch television or at least read during the commercials.

Miss Natalie arrived Friday evening and she traveled with us to Kaden’s away game on Saturday. It was a chilly day, about 48 degrees. I am just not ready for those temps. A t-shirt, sweater, and hoodie kept the top half of me warm, I am going to have a blanket if the weather sticks around for the last two weeks of games. Our team won again 20 – 6. Today, I hope to stay indoors with a good book as soon as I get my computer work done, maybe watch the Packer game too.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Yesterday was a very busy day. We had the Walk for Hope in the morning. Kaden had football in the afternoon. After a quick stop at the outlet mall, Mr. Dollycas, Daughter #2, Kaden and I took Daughter #1 for a birthday dinner a few days early.

Natalie made a special poster for her daddy.
The posters lined the track as we walked.

As the names of the people lost to suicide that were represented by family and friends at this small county walk were read aloud I was just struck that there were just too many names. Too many lives lost. The purpose of the walk was clear. We cannot bring our loved ones back but we can do our damnest to raise awareness so the lists in the future get shorter.

Thank you to everyone that has walked, donated money, and have spoken out to help the quest to #StopSuicide. September is National Suicide Awareness Month but suicide happens too many times each day the whole year round. Be open, listen carefully, and give support. Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you.

Oh, and Kaden’s team won 18 -6. 🙂 His mom celebrated her 29th birthday again. 🙂

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Every day is a hard day without my son Kristopher, but March, December, and September are the hardest months. March because he was born and died in March. December because of the holidays and all that goes with them. September because it is Suicide Prevention Month. This past week was Suicide Prevention Week. I only posted about it here on my blog one time this year, until today. This past week I shared information on Facebook, Twitter, and Google + each day. I wrote a little post for our church bulletin, and I cried a lot.

Yesterday marked 42 months since Kris’ death, but I swear the grief can come up and smack you in the face at any time. It always feels like he was here just yesterday or last week. Then I look at his daughter, now 6, and all the days without him came rushing back. What also comes rushing back is how important Suicide Prevention and Awareness is.

Suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem.

Suicide prevention starts with everyday heroes like you. There are many ways to help.

Awareness needs to be raised about the help available. The stigma about suicide and thoughts of suicide needs to be removed. Use your voice and social media to speak out and raise awareness.

You can volunteer at local chapters and contact your political representatives and lobby for a more open conversation about Mental Health. Mental Health needs to be treated by insurance carriers like any other illness.

September is designated as Suicide Prevention Month but it needs to be in the conversation 365 days a year because suicide doesn’t take a day off. On average there are 123 suicides every day in the U.S. almost 45,000 a year.

Okay, I am getting off my soapbox. You can see this cause is very important to me. If your lives have been touched by suicide you know the pain. The pain that has left our loved one and transferred to us. Reach Out – Listen Closely – Let Them Know You Care. Don’t be afraid to ask them if they are thinking about suicide. Don’t leave them alone. Encourage them to seek help.

If you are in crisis, or with someone in a crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

See my post here for more information and information on how to donate to the Walk for Hope on September 22.

Thank you!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

I am a Summer Girl! I love summer even on the hottest days. Even on the stormy days. I also believe it just doesn’t last long enough.

The grands went back to school this week. Kaden to 5th grade, Natalie to 1st grade, and Remington to all day 5-year-old kindergarten. They grew so much over the summer and we had some wonderful family days. Weekends for the next few weeks will be filled with watching Kaden play football, and on September 22 we will be participating in the Walk for Life for Suicide Prevention in the morning with football in the afternoon.

The worst is the days getting shorter and the temperatures getting lower. I shudder when thinking about the winter weather that will be here way too soon. I have lived in my Wisconsin my entire life but each year I get older the more my body hates the cold. I am praying for a long Indian Summer followed by the shortest winter possible followed by a very early spring.  How about you?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

This week got off to its usual start but on Tuesday afternoon things took stormy turn.

I went to the dentist to get the tooth extracted that had been bothering me. While I was in the chair, the sky got dark and we thought we heard a siren. After the tooth was extracted we heard another siren. As the dental assistant was pushing my wheelchair to the lobby, we were told there was a tornado warning for our area. We got to the lobby and the rain and the wind started and then the power went out. We weren’t leaving the place anytime soon. We watched out the windows as roads flooded, tree limbs were falling and blowing, and trash cans and other things took flight or traveled down the flooded roads. No, we didn’t go to the basement, we watched the storm with the staff and the other patients. I can’t believe how hard it rained.

After about an hour the rain and wind had stopped and the road in front of the clinic was cleared for us to leave. We reached the corner to find the road to the right, our quickest route home, was blocked by a down tree, so we turned left and made our way around branches and other debris to find the next road we needed to take flooded, another detour and another and we finally were headed in  the right direction for home when we saw even more down trees, homes damaged and roads blocked.

We finally arrived home to find two huge pines trees in our front yard were down.  The soil was wet from all the previous days’ storms and the high winds must have just pushed them over. We lost some siding on the house, our garbage cans and outdoor furniture traveled a bit and the gate to our fence was pushed all the way thru going the wrong way and parts of the fence were damaged. The dogs were safe but scared from being here alone with whatever they heard and felt. Power was out until about 10 p.m. so I was reading by flashlight. During the height of the storm Daughter #2 was at work in the basement. Son #2 was at Walmart taking cover. Daughter #1 was driving to the babysitters in a heavy downpour. The boys were at the babysitter’s house in the basement.

Wednesday afternoon the landlord arrived to assess the damage and he and some of his friends and son #2 worked to get the trees cut apart and stacked on the tree border so the city could pick up the debris. The city arrived early Thursday morning and it took them 4 trips to remove everything. The yard really looks different without those trees and it is no longer as shady on that side of the house. We will probably wait until Spring to decide what we want to plant there. We still need to work on the fence, replace some siding and do a little work in the basement due to the amount of rain. Unfortunately, there is more rain in the forecast for this weekend.

Tornados did touch down in two towns near here but so far it has been declared high winds and rain for our town. So many trees we saw on the way home were twisted like corkscrews, so something definitely went through here too. But we are all safe and I haven’t heard of any other people injured. We are very thankful that the trees fell away from the house. We are also thankful for the rapid response of all the utility and city workers. Power was returned within 5-6 hours and they have been working tirelessly to clean up the aftermath.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Last weekend was full. Sunday I attended a baby shower for my niece. After 5 years her son will be getting a new baby brother and we are all excited about that.

What made the weekend extra special is that I was able to spend some time with a friend that means the world to me. We used to see each other daily. We had worked together, played together, and raised our families together. Circumstances changed a few years ago that took her and her husband to Kentucky. Thankfully her son, the one whose birthday I told you about last week, still lives here close by in Wisconsin so they do come to visit often. Any time I get to spend with her is priceless and I am still hoping someday to travel to Kentucky and see her life there. My disability and travel do not always blend well together but there may come a day when we just hop in the car and head their direction.  I am sure they will be here again before then and Facebook and phone calls help the miles not seem so far. Love you, Netter!!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

My week started out great, I am feeling much better.

Then Daughter #1 called on Wednesday to tell me she has been injured at work the day before and was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She works with the developmentally disabled and loves her job. It takes a special kind of individual for this job and she knows what happened to her is one of the risks.  She was home when she called and is following a concussion protocol and will be going to physical therapy for a tweaked neck. She hopes to return to work soon.  Thanks to our governor they are understaffed and underpaid. I would like for him to work just one of her shifts so he could see how wrong he is.

I was able to see her in person yesterday at our nephew’s 30th birthday party. Still a little stiff but improving.  Happy Birthday, Darrell!!!

We had a great time at the party and the grandkids had a blast too. Of course, all 3 came home with us for a sleepover. Time spent with family always makes a great day!

Also this week, Kaden had his youth football night. All I know is he is growing way to fast. He is doing really well. He has been given the nickname of Diesel. “Can’t go through him, can’t go around him.” He is on his way to being a great offensive or defensive lineman. His first scrimmage is next Saturday with games the following 6 weekends. Nana and Papa will be hitting the road to hopefully catch every one of them.

And Natalie arrived home from Florida, she missed us all, but she had an awesome time at the beach!
