HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

https://www.oregonlive.com/nation/2022/06/march-for-our-lives-draws-crowds-to-washington-monument-rallies-across-us.html

I shared a picture last week about the number of mass shootings since Uvalde and had hopes we could get thru a few days without another. Well, there were 13 more mass shootings just last weekend. This weekend there were several rallies across the country calling for action on gun laws. Congress has been working on a plan that basically does nothing because Republicans won’t support anything of substance even when the majority of the country supports background checks, red flag laws, and even banning the AR-15. The youth of our country have been on the front lines and many are now old enough to vote. I think it is going to be those young adults that force the change we need. But we all have to vote to get people in office that are actually working for the country, not the dollars they receive from the NRA.

Last Saturday we had our first Family Fun Day since COVID turned the world upside down. We left the rain behind and headed to  Bay Beach Amusement Park in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the sun was shining. The park is filled with great vintage rides and tickets for them are just 25 cents. The larger rides can take up to four tickets but all in all, it was a pretty inexpensive day and a whole lot of fun!

I have not been on a carnival ride in over 20 years so when my kids told me the Big Wheel Ferris Wheel was wheelchair accessible I couldn’t wait to get on it. Because of my disability, we also got to move to the front of the line. The staff had to put in special equipment to hold my chair in place and they did it with smiles on their faces. It was a little breezy up there but the views were amazing!

After we practically closed down the park we laughed that we still had tickets. Kaden walked up to a couple of grandparents surrounded by little kids and made their day by giving our leftover tickets to them. We could have saved them for another visit but we hadn’t been to this park since the kids were about Charlotte, Remi, and Natalie’s age so who knows when we would be back again.

We left the park and traveled across the street so the kids and the grands could drive go-carts and play mini-golf. Sadly, Mr. Dollycas was fighting a terrible head cold so he took a little rest in the car while I kept Charlotte entertained.

On our way home we pulled into a Denny’s for a late supper before we all headed home already talking about our next family fun day.

Since I usually work 7 days a week I spent this week getting caught up on blog and tour stuff and trying to find the bottom of my overflowing email inbox in addition to what I usually do every day. One day off put me behind but time spent with family is the most important part of life and I will always jump at the chance to spend time with them.

And that cold Mr. Dollycas had . . . he has now shared it with me and Daughter #2. Funny we made it all the way through COVID without having so much as a sniffle. He goes back to the office and has been sick twice and this time it spread to the rest of the household. We will be hitting it hard with DayQuil and NightQuil in hopes of getting better quick!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

I grabbed this picture on Friday. It would be great to get through the weekend without another mass shooting but I am afraid there will be more needless deaths.

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

On Monday I actually got out of the house and traveled somewhere for the first time in over a month. Mr. Dollycas, Daughter #2, and I ventured out to get a few plants to perk up our landscape. We didn’t go too overboard this year after most of the annuals we planted last year did not survive the season. We switched this year to perennials and I am so excited to finally have some daisies, daylilies, and lavender plants again.

https://destinationicecream.blogspot.com/2016/08/gilles-fond-du-lac-wi.htmlAfter we finished our shopping we stopped at the popular Gilles Frozen Custard Drive-In for an early supper. They say they are frozen in time since 1949. Over 70 years in business is quite a feat! We loved the place. Our server was friendly, the food was great, the prices were reasonable, and I had the best orange shake ever. We will definitely be going back and bonus Daughter #2 works nearby and they have take out!

Wednesday was Daughter #2’s birthday! It was just the three of us for supper and ice cream cake but we had a family fun day yesterday. I will share pictures from that next week!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

I am still having trouble wrapping my head around another senseless school shooting. I find it even more senseless that the NRA is holding its convention with their 14 acres of guns and ammo so close by to where it happened this weekend and that earlier in the week Republicans in the Senate voted down even debating any gun reform issues. The press conference by the Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Ted Cruz, and all the politicians made me sick to my stomach. I applaud Beto O’Roarke for saying what most of us were thinking. Then we had to learn about all the issues with the response teams that are truly hard to accept. What I did find heartening was all the marches, protests, and rallies over the past few days, most led by students across America. In my opinion, the assault weapons ban needs to be put back in place. If you need a weapon of war for deer hunting, you are a p*ss poor hunter. I know with today’s politicians that is not going to happen especially when they won’t even discuss background checks. It is a sad day in America when people love guns more than children.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

https://film-book.com/this-is-us-season-6-episode-18-us-tv-show-trailer-nbc/Are you watching This Is Us? I have loved the show from the start but the last few weeks, since Rebecca sat her kids down and expressed her wishes, I have had the tears rolling down my face every time I watch. Last week’s episode was so well done and memorable I don’t know how they are going to top it this week with the series finale but I will be glued to my television without a book in my hand. These final episodes have deserved all my attention. Like with some of the great books I read I quickly became invested in these characters and I am happy viewers have been able to see the family evolve and that we will get the ending we need to let them go.

On Tuesday I was thrilled to learn that my blog again made the list of 45 Best Mystery Blogs and Websites coming in at #8. I also made the list of the 90 Best Mystery Blogs on the Planet ranked at #5. I love what I do and it is great to be recognized for it.

On Thursday Daisy made her first trip of the year to the dog park. I am sure she didn’t get enough exercise over the winter so she tired out pretty quickly but she can’t wait to go again. She has pulled her harness off the shelf several times and carried it to the door. I am sure she will get there again soon, maybe right after I finish writing this post.

Kaden with the principal

Friday was a big day for my grandson Kaden. He graduated from 8th grade. We are all so proud of him. The pandemic with distance learning was hard on him and so many others but since he has been back in school with face-to-face interaction he found his footing again. High School will present new challenges but I believe he has the tools and support to help him excel. This year he was more confident and in addition to football, he participated in wrestling and track and field all while keeping a handle on his schoolwork. He is growing into an exceptional young man and I am excited to see what the next year will bring while wrapping my head around how fast the years have flown by.

Remi’s last day of school was Friday too. He has all kinds of plans for his summer. I hope some include me 🙂

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

Another quiet week around here. I really enjoyed the warmer temperatures but my body revolted a little on Wednesday. I woke up with a headache that just wouldn’t quit. When Daughter #2 got home from work she quickly put the air conditioners in the windows and I have felt better since then. I have been sneaking outside often though because I really love the sunshine and heat.

I have also been playing with that new profile app everyone is sharing on Facebook and I did check out all the warnings, but have determined it is no more dangerous than any other app we download to our phones. Both of my daughters and Kaden have caught the bug as well.

Yesterday Mr. Dollycas and I celebrated our 39th Wedding Anniversary. Son #2 came over with his family and Kaden arrived Friday night and with their help we got some much needed things done around the house and the lawn mowed for the first time this year. Son #2 also delivered our rider lawn mower to the repair shop. When that gets fixed Mr. Dollycas will be hard to get off it. It will be nice not to depend on the kids help so much with the yard. I also made my list of flowers I want to plant in the beds and some perennials and shrubs to add to the landscape.

Happy Mother’s Day!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

Nationally it was one heck of a week starting with the death of Naomi Judd, followed by the death of Kailia Posey, and the deaths of 3 young woman athletes the week before.  They all follow the many deaths each year due to mental health issues and ending with suicide. We need to get a handle on mental health in this country. Losing my own son in 2015 brought this plight into my own home and each day more lives are lost. After my son died someone said, “suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem” and that is so true. Over the years I have learned suicide also doesn’t care how famous you are, how much money you have, where you live, or how much your family loves you. It can work its way into anyone’s life.

Please – If you are in crisis, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741-741. And keep this information handy because you may not need it now but there may come a time you do.

The nation was also stunned by the document leaked from the Supreme Court and that draft weighs heavy on my heart and mind. But I am not going to get on my soapbox today but I may in the future when I can wrap my head around it fully enough to put coherent sentences together.

Now for the good news! After days and days of rain, sunshine and warmer weather have arrived here in Wisconsin and that makes me so happy. The forecast shows we are going to be in the 70s and 80s this week. I can’t wait to throw the windows open and let the fresh air in. I have asked Mr. Dollycas to get chairs out on the porch so I can sit out there to read if I wish. Daisy is excited too because that means trips to the dog park are in her future.

Other than that I read some good books and am still bingeing on Chicago Fire and working on my blog and book tours.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

It was a quiet week around here. I spent days working at the computer on tours, reviews, and giveaways, My evenings were filled with reading and watching television. I have been bingeing on Chicago Fire, watching from Season 1 on Peacock. I like that I can start them no matter what time and stop when it is time for sleep.

Mr. Dollycas is doing well back at the office but he had a sore throat and headache that kept him home one day. I immediately thought it was COVID and was ready to lose it because we had avoided that by keeping him home. We used one of our at-home tests and it was negative. He felt well enough to return to work the next day and I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Yesterday, Son #2 stopped by to help his dad change the oil in one of the cars. Charlotte came along and immediately snuggled up with Daughter #2 and they both took a nap.

Oh, and I have to mention it rained all week and by yesterday my body started to revolt. Aches and pains I know are weather-related and could all be fixed with some good old sunshine.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

Well, Mr. Dollycas survived his first week back at work in the office and so did Daisy and I. She was pretty quiet the first couple of days and stayed close to the window so she could watch the driveway.

Daughter #1 came up to take me to a follow-up with my oncologist on Friday and when we got home Daisy was so excited to see me. More lovable than she had been to me all week. Now she has been left alone before when Mr. Dollycas had taken me to appointments before but on Friday as soon as I sat down at my desk she planted herself right on top of my feet and stayed there making sure I didn’t leave again. Of course, when Mr. Dollycas got home she was his shadow the rest of the night.

The appointment with the oncologist went well, it was just a check-in to be sure I was still tolerating the drugs okay and was handling the side effects from them. Still have some stomach issues but that may be from a medication I take for being pre-diabetic. Will have to touch base with my primary if that doesn’t change. I go back in June for a more physical exam, bloodwork, and my Zometa infusion to slow bone loss caused by the cancer and the treatments.

Saturday was a fun-filled day. We started the day by attending granddaughter Natalie’s dance recital. She was only in the hip hop number this year and she rocked it! It was also nice to see some old friends and family too! Thank you Erin for the great pictures!

After the recital, we went out to lunch to celebrate Natalie’s 10th Birthday with her mom’s side of the family. We always have fun when we get together especially to celebrate our now favorite 10-year-old. It does seem like yesterday we were waiting down the hall from the delivery room for her to be born. We are so blessed to have her in our lives and I know her daddy is watching over her and proud of the wonderful young lady she is growing into.

We did enjoy the cutest cake too!

On our way home, we had an extra passenger.

Kaden is back but will be going home later today.

Also the weather yesterday was amazing!! We hit the high 70’s!! We won’t hit anywhere near that again for at least a week or more according to the forecast. I was thrilled to be able to get out and enjoy it!

Back on November 3, 1999, Mr. Dollycas and I took our daughters to see the Backstreet Boys in concert. They had a blast and I became a huge fan. It has been on my bucket list to see them again and after over 20 years it is set to happen. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, my daughters and I will be in the audience singing and dancing our hearts out when the Backstreet Boys come to Summerfest in Milwaukee in July. Plans have been made and tickets were purchased this week and all 3 of us are beyond excited.

Other than that it was a pretty typical week around here. Blogging, book tours, reading, television, playing with the dog, and pretty yucky weather.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

I am so happy to put March in the rearview mirror. It is just hard every year.

I am also encouraged by the way things are starting to move in a positive direction with COVID. I am actually looking forward to getting out of this house for more things than doctor’s appointments and the occasional grandchildren’s sporting events. I am sure I am not alone. Family fun days and swimming at the local aquatic center are the top things on my post-COVID list!

There was some sad news this week for readers. Author Mary Daheim passed away on Thursday, March 31 at the age of 84. She started out writing historical romances but switched to cozy mysteries in 1991 with Just Desserts, the first book in her Bed & Breakfast Series. The 31st book in the series was released in February 2019 and the 32nd was to be released later this year. In 1992 the 1st book of the Emma Lord Mysteries was released and continued for 27 more books. We communicated for several years through email and she was a pure delight.
