A Week in the Life of Dollycas

We had a pretty quiet week around here. We ventured out on Monday for my wound care appointment and enjoyed the nice weather. After that, I worked at my computer and Mr. Dollycas worked at his.

We did receive news this week that the powers that be at his job are starting to transition the staff back to working in the office. It is going to be a big change after having him every day since March 21, 2020. It was wonderful that his time here coincided with my cancer treatments so he could be here to take care of me and take me to most of my appointments. Hopefully, my wound care appointments will wrap up soon and then I just have to worry about my checkups and twice-yearly transfusions because his time won’t be as flexible. It will also be a transition for me being her alone again, well me and Daisy. I know he will be happy to see all his office friends again after all this time.

Kaden has been here this weekend. He is pretty self-sufficient and probably takes more care of us than we do of him 😆 As long as he has his XBox he is happy. Truthfully he is always a big help.

So, how was your week?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

We has a little celebration for my Cancer Free diagnosis last Saturday night. Natalie was already here to visit for the weekend, Daughter #1 brought the boys up and Charlotte and her mom dropped by later in the evening. Her daddy stayed home still recovering from pneumonia. We played Apples to Apples and Left-Right-Center with Natalie and Remi the big winners.  Mr. Dollycas served up a wonderful lasagna dinner followed by cake for dessert. The strawberry pink cake was quickly named “booby cake” which lead to Natalie serenading me with “Happy Booby Day to You”. It was a late night and we had so much fun.

Monday we were back at wound care after missing two weeks due to the doctor being on vacation. The home nurse still came to change my bandages. Daughter #2 was off that day so she was my chauffeur. Everything is healing well, it is just taking much longer than I expected. We were both feeling a little blue especially after we explained to people at wound care why this is a bad week for us so we decided a little Dairy Queen therapy was in order. Medium Vanilla Cone for me and a Mint Shake for her.

Tuesday was the 7th Anniversary of Kris’ death and I decided I was just going to work through the day on the blog tours after my home nurse visit. I did pretty well but quit a little early because a headache was starting to brew. Funny, prior to my accident in 2001 I used to get some major migraines. After the accident, there were no migraines and I could count on one hand the number of headaches I had in almost 20 years. Since my cancer treatments, the headaches are back, not the severe migraines but enough that I know to medicate and relax so that is what I did. I still woke up the next day not feeling well. It was a very short day at the computer followed by a good long nap. I did feel much better by suppertime. I know this headache was brought on by grief and the stressors of the week but my son is worth any pain delivered on me. I miss him so very much. My days are filled with memories and longing not just this past week but every day of every week. Losing a child is the hardest thing a person can do. I do not wish this pain on anyone.

This weekend is off to a great start. Daughter #1 is working so Kaden and Remi are in the house for the next 2 days. They are on Spring Break but have some dentist appointments on Monday. I wouldn’t be surprised if they return after that but they may decide to go have some fun with their other grandparents too. I just hope Mother Nature gives them some nice weather. She has been pretty fickle the past few days.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

Tuesday I received a message from Son #2 that he was at the hospital with a fever of 102, massive back pain, and feeling like someone was stepping on his chest. Of course, I wanted to go right there but the hospital is still under COVID protocols so I waited by my phone. He was soon admitted with a diagnosis of pneumonia and hooked up to oxygen, given IV fluids and antibiotics. Hard to keep this young man down, he was released late the next day and rested at his apartment on Thursday and returned to work on Friday. I am always amazed by the way he pushes through illnesses that would knock me on my butt for a week or more.

On Wednesday we did go to the hospital. Me for a mammogram and Mr. Dollycas to visit Son #2. My mammogram went well and then I visited with my Breast Cancer Advocate. She was so happy that I seemed more like myself now that I have been taken off the Verzenio. It was great to catch up with her and wonderful that didn’t include me breaking down in tears. The radiologist said as expected to have another scan in 6 months as expected.

Later that day I received a message that I had a new health report to read on the hospital’s patient system. I signed in expecting to see the same message as the previous scans and what totally taken by surprise to see “No suspicious findings” and the word I have been waiting to see “BENIGN“. The next day I received a letter which states –

Dear Ms. Caswell,

We are pleased to inform you that your recent study MAMMO BILAT DIAGNOSTIC performed on 3/9/22 shows no evidence of cancer.

I was over the moon happy. Something good in the month of March! I can now say I am a breast cancer survivor! Almost exactly two years to the day that was informed I had breast cancer. I still am at a high rate for reoccurrence so will continue to have mammograms as ordered and continue to take the Anastrozole. Knowing the next few days are going to be hard for my family I decided my news was something to celebrate with a family dinner and game night. (Since I am typing this on Saturday before the celebration I will share more next week about our celebration.) Please keep my family in your thoughts as Tuesday marks 7 years since we lost Son #1 to suicide.

How was your week?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

If you follow me and this blog you know March is a hard month for me and my family. The accident that left my right side paralyzed happened on March 14, 2001. In March 2013 we lost our Fall River house. I lost my son, Kristopher to suicide on March 15, 2015. I received my breast cancer diagnosis on March 13, 2020. Kris’s birthday is March 29. Last year at this time our landlords sold our house without telling us and gave us less than a month to find a new place and we had days filled with stress and drama as we feared we may be homeless just like we almost were in 2013. Thankfully we did find a place in the nick of time. I enter this month with dread wondering what I am going to be hit with next.

This past week I have just felt off, you know left of center, a little achy and depressed. I know it’s just this time of year and the weather changes add to the mix but I have a little trepidation too as on Wednesday I will go to have another follow-up mammogram. Hoping the cancer has not returned and not traveled. Trying to prepare for the radiologist not to confirm anything. Just saying come back in 6 months like he did the last time.

The past few years I have really lost my faith but I strive to keep moving forward when the dark days come. I find strength from my friends and family. I am so thankful for each encouraging message, each heartfelt hug, ears that listen, and sometimes my grandchildren’s smiles can turn my whole day around. I know I am going to need all of these things as the month continues, Have I mentioned . . . I HATE MARCH!

I know I have not the only one struggling. We all have days that get us down. Tough mountains to climb. And let’s face it COVID has just added to the pressures and the war with Ukraine isn’t helping either as we worry about its people and how the conflict affects the world as a whole.

If you are struggling please reach out for help. Schedule some time to spend with family and friends doing something fun. If you don’t want to talk to friends or family, talk to your doctor, find a support group, or if you are at a crisis point now please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. Or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

Just know you are not alone. Reach out. There are people that love you that want to help.

~Lori

Last Sunday felt like a Hallmark kind of night and I love Alison Sweeney so when I saw she was involved in a new movie trilogy I knew I had to watch it. So I started with The Wedding Veil closely followed by The Wedding Veil Unveiled and The Wedding Veil Legacy. Good things do come in 3’s. I enjoyed all 3 movies very much. They were perfect for a low-key relaxing evening.

Later in the week, I am all our eyes turned to Ukraine. My heart breaks for its people and the people of Russia who want nothing to do with war. You may know Maxim Chmerkovsky and his brother Val from Dancing With The Stars. They immigrated from the Ukraine in the 1990s. Maxim posted to his social media accounts on Friday saying “There is always another way! War is never an answer!” Yesterday I also received an email from a candle company in Door County. The owner is a Ukrainian American and she is selling candles to raise money for Razom Ukraine. While we may not personally know anyone from Ukraine it is important to the us here in the United States, especially after what happened in Washington on December 6.  I am not going to get on my soapbox expect to say I STAND WITH UKRAINE.

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

Some unique weather moved across the states this weekend. It hit here in Wisconsin Friday night. I don’t ever remember the word squall heard to describe Wisconsin weather but that is what they called this event. I was startled when the weather alert blasted through my phone at about 6 p.m. They are now treating weather events like this just like tornados and hurricanes. The sudden whiteout conditions lead to several accidents like this one that involved over 40 cars and trucks.

I did watch Olympic figure skating this week and the handling of the whole doping scandal was abhorrent. The young Russian teen at the center of the scandal should have not been allowed to skate. The pressure on her had to be more than she could handle and the way the coach yelled at her when she came off the ice bordered on abuse. Then the aftermath that followed was so hard to watch. A furious skater mad because she didn’t win gold. Other skaters in tears and not from happiness. Then the skater that did win gold, sitting on a couch, holding a teddy bear all by herself. Later saying she feels ‘Emptiness’ after winning gold. The commentators were as upset as I was and did their best to put everything into words to report their thoughts to us. I love watching figure skaters no matter what country they are from and am sad whenever they fall and cheer when they hit the jump perfectly. What I watched this week has really tainted the sport in my opinion.

On a lighter note – Granddaughter Natalie and her mom had their pictures taken for Valentine’s Day. When this picture popped up in my Facebook feed it really brightened my day. I am so blessed to have both of them in my life.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

It was another quiet week around here.

My Mom and Dad’s Wedding

Tuesday was the 13th anniversary of my mom’s death and it just doesn’t seem that long until I look at the grandkids. Only Kaden was alive when she passed. I know she would have given the rest the tons of good loving hugs she was known for. She always said, “Give me some loves” with her arms open wide. She took so much family history with her too. I wish I would have sat down with her and written down and absorbed it all. I am trying to pass along everything I can remember to my kids but I know there is so much before my time that may be lost. Food for Thought: Document what you can while you can. Your children, grand and greats will be so happy you did.

We have had a very special house guest the last couple of years. Son #2’s bearded dragon, Thor, has been staying with us until yesterday when he moved to their apartment. I am not a reptile fan but as long as he was behind glass he was a lot of fun to watch. Mr. Dollycas thought he was being funny when he brought him to me to say goodbye. I didn’t reach out for him at all and then my son put him on my shoulder.  I am getting a little assist from Charlotte. The funny thing is I missed him as soon as he left. He was very active and had some silly antics. We had learned what he liked to eat, how warm his tank needed to be, that when his chin turned black he was angry about something, and to spray him down with water to protect his skin. Shedding was always a fun time of year. While he is no longer in our house I can go visit him at my son’s where I know he will get loads of attention from the kids and their parents.

I am still playing Wordle. Are you? It has now been taken over by the New York Times so everyone is wondering how long it will be free to play. I plan to keep playing as long as it is. It is a good test for this old mind. I did miss one last week due to a silly mistake but that happens. I have added a post on the Escape With Dollycas Facebook Page if you would like to share your scores.

How was your week?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

A Week in the Life of Dollycas

I got to spend some time with Daughter #1 on Monday. She took me to my wound care appointment because Mr. Dollycas tweaked his knee the week before and was still nursing it. It will be the last time she can take me because tomorrow she starts her new job as the day shift supervisor for the place she has been working at for 15 years. She works with people with intellectual and physical disabilities and finds it so rewarding. I am so proud of her.

The rest of the week we stayed tucked in at home where it was warm. I spent my days at the computer as usual and my evenings reading, watching television, and snuggling with Daisy. She is not a fan of the cold either, even with her sweatshirt on. I snapped this picture Friday night. She really hates the hood but she hates cold ears more.

I did watch this season’s Project Runway. I think I enjoy watching this competition because prior to my accident I made most of my own clothes and I loved so many other needlecrafts. The finale was this week and the designer I had been rooting for did make it to the final four but didn’t win. Coral Castillo really grabbed me with her signature macrame additions to her garments and her story gave me high hopes as well. I wasn’t the only one that thought she was robbed. I was thrilled there were four women in the final but the winner was the one I had in fourth place. I thought her clothes looked frumpy and old-fashioned. If you like this type of show I would recommend streaming it. There is one designer in the cast that had me wondering what the heck she was doing there and several others that were very talented. There is one episode where they design for the Real Housewives and that episode was filled with laughs and drama.

Are you watching the Olympics? I usually watch ice skating and hockey. So upset that Wisconsin’s Brianna Decker is hurt and unable to play. There are 5 other members on the women’s hockey team with ties to Wisconsin so that makes me want to watch even more. The are several other Wisconsin athletes taking part in the games in other sports so I will try to watch some of those events too. It is hard to catch the all with the many stations to watch and the time difference but they will hopefully show some of what I want to see in prime time.

How was your week? Did you get hit by the big snowstorm? Or are you someplace nice and warm?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

It was a pretty quiet week around here. We didn’t go anywhere and the only person that stopped by here was my visiting nurse to change the bandages on my legs. The wounds are really starting to heal nicely. We were happy to see our regular nurse because she was ill last week and she is a lot of fun and puts up with us and Daisy with a smile on her face.

One awesome thing did happen last week and the week before that I forgot to mention. I received some actual print copies, some are ARC’s, in the mail from the publishers. A few authors have sent me print books as well. I am so excited to be able to start offering print book giveaways again.  The COVID virus is far from over but receiving these books feels like one step to getting some normalcy back in my life.

Are you playing Wordle? I first downloaded on App on my phone only to find that wasn’t the hot new game everyone was playing. Same Name – Wrong Game. A good old Google Search got me on the right path. I haven’t missed one yet but have only been playing for 4 days. I am happy you can only play once per day because it could be pretty addictive. If you want to check it out, here is the link – https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/.

The Sunday Salon is a Facebook group that has become an
informal week in review gathering place for bloggers.

It is also a place to share our thoughts about things of a bookish nature.

~ It’s a chance to share news~
A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received, and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Another chilly week here in Wisconsin. We did a little bit of snow but it looks like more fell north and south of us.

Remi went home on Saturday but Kaden stayed until Tuesday. Kaden kept us in line and entertained while also playing games on his Xbox and yelling at the television. They both were great helpers when they were here too. The house sure is quiet when they go home. Both are now back in school hoping the off-time allows the schools to stay open. Time will tell.

On Monday we celebrated a little bit marking that it was one year ago that Miss Daisy Mae came into our lives. She is such a good girl but still learning every day. Her newest thing is barking when we are on the phone. Just like when the kids were little and they always wanted attention as soon as we started talking. We are trying hard to break her of this new skill. She also really hates the cold even with one of her sweatshirts on. Yes, she is totally spoiled.

Monday was also Betty White’s birthday. She would have been 100 years old and if you are anything like me you thought she would live forever and were totally heartbroken at her death. I did make a donation in her honor to the local humane society. This picture was on Facebook – Image by Lindsay van Ekeleburg – It is too beautiful not to share.

I was also so saddened by the recent deaths of Bob Saget, Louis Anderson, and Michael Lee Aday aka Meatloaf.

And, this was our last week with Flat Remi. He is now en route back to his teacher.

Other than that we did our best to stay warm. Days were spent here at the computer and evenings found me snuggled under a blanket and reading.

How was your week?
