My Drunk Kitchen Holidays!: How to Savor and Celebrate the Year: A Cookbook by Hannah Hart – Mother/Daughter Review

My Drunk Kitchen Holidays
My Drunk Kitchen Holidays!: How to Savor and Celebrate the Year: A Cookbook
Publisher: Plume (October 22, 2019)
Hardcover: 224 pages
ISBN-10: 0525541438
ISBN-13: 978-0525541431
Kindle ASIN: B07N5N2VTC

New York Times bestselling author and Food Network star Hannah Hart is back with her biggest book ever: a humorous holiday cookbook celebrating year-round festivities with food, drink, and friends.

In a world where everyone is looking for some good news and something to celebrate, Hannah Hart is there with almost fifty ideas, arranged into twelve months of themes and recipes for how to celebrate with family and friends.

A collection of recipes, activities, and suggestions about hilarious and joyous ways to celebrate with family, friends, pets, and your entire community, My Drunk Kitchen Holidays! will commemorate holidays from Valentine’s Day to Graduation, Pride Month and International Left-Handers’ Day (really!). The book will culminate with the fall holidays that get much deserved attention: recipes for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and a celebration of Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Christmas that is festive, inclusive, and incredibly hilarious.

Dollycas’ and LizzieCas’ Thoughts

Since my accident, my daughter Lizzie has become the cookbook collector of the family and she loves to bake and cook so I thought it would be fun if we reviewed this book together.

Hannah Hart puts an awesome take on our year-long festivities with fun stories and recipes. As well she gives a great look into other days just as “Mental Health Day” and “Love Our Children Day”.

Some may think this book is more of a storybook instead of a cookbook we feel it’s a happy medium of both.  We really enjoyed the author’s messages to introduce the book, each month, and each holiday. They are fun and informative and gave the book a more personal feeling. The pictures are colorful, some are pretty amusing showing readers Hannah Hart’s great sense of humor.

This will be a book we pull out all year through and we can’t wait to try the recipes for this holiday season. The green bean casserole graced our table for Thanksgiving (a new twist on an old staple). With cookie baking right around the corner, we will take Hannah’s advice to have a cocktail. She also includes some excellent advice about kids and explaining Santa and the magic of Christmas.

This book would make a great Christmas present to share with loved ones. We already have started out lists!

Happy Thanksgiving!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Mr. Dollycas is preparing our feast but like last year Daughter #1 is working, and Daughter #2 is working part of the day too. Son #2 has a well deserved day off and I have promised and have been looking forward to being away from the computer for the day. Dinner will be served later this afternoon and the rest of the day will be spent relaxing with maybe just a little bit of Christmas shopping.

I hope you are enjoying a relaxing day with your family too!

Happy Thanksgiving from our home to yours!

Sunday Salon / Sunday Post – Football Road Trip – Weekly Rewind – Mail Call

A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

I am keeping the people affected by Tropical Storm Imelda in my thoughts and prayers.
Such devastation it will take be a long road to recovery.

Football Road Trip!

Yesterday we hit the road for a little football. Remi had a game at home and Kaden had a game away. We were the away bus 🙂 His warmups were at 8 and the game was at 9 so that meant up by 5:30 and out the door and on the road by 6:30. I am not a morning person so that was rough but so worth it. This is the one game a year where the kids play on a Division 3 college field. Again the Cardinals shutout their opponents 38 -0. Kaden again showed how he earned the nickname of Diesel.

What made the day extra special was catching up with an old friend. Suzy and I have been friends forever and we run into each other these games all the time and share a quick hello. Yesterday we were able to sit together and gab through the whole game while keeping close eyes to the boys on the field. We talked so much I forgot to get a picture of us together. I hope to remedy that next week. For now, I dug up this gem.

In the old days, we would play for hours, her house was my house, my house was her house. Wherever one of us was the other would soon follow. These days we can always pick up right where we left off and talk about our kids and grandkids and everything else under the sun. The game was soon over and we went our separate ways with “see you next week”. Thankfully it’s a home game so I can sleep in until at least 7.

Remi’s team won too at home. On our way home from Kaden’s game, we stopped by their house and brought Remi home with us too. So both boys are here until later today. By the time they go home I think I will take a nap like Daughter #2 and Mr. Dollycas did yesterday when we got home while I worked at the computer and kept track of the boys. Maybe I will find a nice quiet place to read instead. 🙂 A nap would just mess up my night owl sleep pattern.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

I hope you had some fun this week, I did!

Kaden spent the week with me and the dogs. By the time Saturday, okay Friday night, arrived we had had enough of each other, 🙂 Natalie arrived Friday night for the weekend, but we had to take her back for a make-up softball game on Saturday morning. We delivered Kaden back with his dad after the game and then came back home with Natalie.

After dropping Mr. Dollycas off and a little lunch. Daughter #2, Natalie and I headed for the local art & craft fair. There was live music, food and a nice assortment of vendors! I could have spent a lot of money but restrained myself.

While the girls were looking at things I was relaxing in my wheelchair. I was surprised when a woman walked up to me and showed me a glass angel she had created. She said it was a “Hope Angel” and she wanted me to have it. I was so touched, thanked her profusely and she said I had beautiful girls but knew I needed some “hope in my life”. As soon as I saw the angel I thought of Kris, the son that I lost.  That woman has no idea who I was or anything about me, but she was right I do need more hope in my life.

Our Craft Sale Haul

As we were leaving the area I saw a wall hanging I just had to have. Natalie also found a cool gold glitter water bottle and she and Daughter #2 will be sharing some bath bombs.

After we arrived back at home they decided to relax and watch Disney’s Descendents 3 and I hear there is some cookie baking in our future.

I love it when the grands come to visit. The push me away from this darn computer and out of the house to have some fun. But after Natalie goes home this afternoon I am going to probably read and take a nap and get ready to for my blissfully quiet week with just me and the dogs 🙂

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Daughters Down For The Count

I have been feeling much better and am drinking all the water I can but . . . .

Monday found Daughter #1 in the hospital. She had a sore or a bite on her arm that had become very painful. A trip to urgent care didn’t give a firm diagnosis but she was admitted to receive intravenous antibiotics. The first two they tried had terrible side effects but the third one seemed to work. She was sent home late the next day with a prescription and told to rest. She saw her doctor on Friday and has received the go-ahead to return to work tomorrow. She still has to keep the sore covered and doesn’t know exactly what it is, but is starting to feel like her old self.

Monday also found Daughter #2 staying home from work sick. She had had back pain she has been seeing a chiropractor for but this turned out to be a headache upset stomach sort of illness. After several days of no relief, she finally went to the doctor on Friday. He gave her an injection to help with the headache and nausea and prescribed a very limited diet for the next week. She felt much better yesterday and was kicking herself for not going to the doctor sooner as I had suggested. She too will be returning to work on tomorrow.

I kept myself busy reading and blogging while a few things out in the real world had me pretty upset, but will keep those things to myself rather than interject my politics here. Beware if you visit my PERSONAL Facebook page though because I can be quite vocal.

Thursday night Kaden arrived to see his Xbox, LOL. I did receive a hug so I think he was happy to see me too. He was a little sore after a 3-day football camp he had attended. I can’t believe it is almost August and football practice and games will be starting soon. It’s tackle this year so it should be pretty interesting. Not sure how long he is staying, I do enjoy having him around and he does help Mr. Dollycas with year work, etc.

This video popped up in my Facebook Newsfeed this week.
I love the Backstreet Boys!

How was your week? Did you do anything fun?

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

HOT! HOT! HOT!

Boy! It sure is HOT!

I want to start out by saying I am feeling so much better than I did last week. After a course of antibiotics, the pain in my back from my kidney is completely gone.  I am drinking at least 72 oz of water a day and staying out of the heat.

My grandsons arrived Saturday night and stayed until Tuesday afternoon because Daughter #1 had a terrible stomach bug. They kept me entertained and kept me on track with the water. I did appreciate the peace and quiet though after they returned home. I got back on my reading schedule and could actually watch what I wanted to watch on television.

We also celebrated Mr. Dollycas’s birthday on Tuesday!

Friday night I found a movie for free On Demand that I remember watching several times with my mom over the years. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts. I love old movies, most made before I was even born 🙂 I hope The Incredible Mr. Limpet shows up On Demand soon, I will have to keep checking better than I have in the past. After watching a few you quickly see that many of the same actors are all in most of these movies and television shows in that timeframe, the late 50’s early 60’s. Charles Lane typically plays a lawyer in many movies and shows jumped out at me as well as Mrs. Kravitz and Darren from Bewitched, and Reta Shaw from Mary Poppins and The Music Man. Ellen Crosby, Grandma Walton also makes an appearance.

Last night and today I will be working through the shows recorded on my DVR, like the finale of The Amazing Race I haven’t been able to watch yet. I hope to read a book too. I am happy to relax indoors and enjoy the air conditioning until Mother Nature cools her jets a little bit.

Stay Cool Folks!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Both Dad’s in my life watch over us from heaven, but they are always in my heart and thoughts. I wish our children had more time with them and our grandchildren had met them. They were taken from us much too soon.

My week started Monday morning meeting a new doctor. Mr. Dollycas’s doctor is retiring and I had really lost confidence in my doctor after some stupid, thankfully not life-threatening errors. We really liked him and he has agreed to take both of us on with our vast medical issues. He had some great suggestions and insights. He had me redo a couple of lab tests so he could straighten out my prescriptions. I have never had trouble giving blood but did this time so I am sporting a nice bruise. The labs came back better than expected, hopefully, now I am back on track. Mr. Dollycas still has to follow up with his surgeon for a while but now he has a new family practice physician.

One of the authors touring with Great Escapes Book Tours really brightened up my Friday when the clerk from local flower shop knocked on my door. I love organizing those tours.

Other than that it was a pretty uneventful week. Blogging and book tours filled by days and reading and television filled by nights. Not much really to watch as far as dramas though. I am excited that CBS is bringing The Good Fight off their paid access to free television tonight. I enjoyed The Good Wife and would have watched The Good Fight right away but I wasn’t going to pay extra for it.

Did you do anything fun last week?

~Lori

A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

We had a big day yesterday.

The day started out with Mr. Dollycas and Daughter #2 taking the dogs to the yearly vet appointment. We still go to the same vet that we had before our move so it is about an hour away. For dogs 16 years old they are in pretty good health. Their hearing is mostly gone, their vision is declining, they have some fatty tumors and some arthritis is setting in but they are still pretty frisky and keep us on our toes.  You have to look closely but Oreo, our black and white dog is in the driver’s seat and Nera is ready to ride shotgun. 🙂 They were definitely ready to leave the vet and come home.

Our day continued to our honorary son’s house to celebrate 2 birthdays and celebrate new life after heart surgery. Our friend, John had open heart surgery to repair a bad valve almost 3 weeks ago at the Cleveland Clinic. At his followup appointment, he ended up being readmitted for another overnight visit to regulate his heartbeat, scaring the daylights out of everyone, before returning home to Kentucky. Then a couple of days later he ended up overnight there in the hospital to get the rhythm regulated again, another big scare.

The plan was to come to Wisconsin this weekend for his grandson’s birthday party but I thought after the extra 2 trips to the hospital his visit would be postponed. But, nope, I was stunned to learn on he was on his way and after just 1 overnight stop he was pulling in to his son’s home. I have known John almost my entire life and knew he was stubborn. This time it is paying off. He is making a great recovery. We hope to see him and his awesome wife Annette when they come to Wisconsin again in a couple of weeks.

The birthdays we celebrated were Dakota’s 7th birthday and Daughter’s #2’s 28th birthday. Mother Nature tried to rain on our party but a little rain could never stop this group. Dakota’s party has come to be our annual first get together of the summer. We always have fun and make future summer plans.

What did you do this weekend?

~Lori
