Welcome to Torte—a friendly, small-town family bake shop where the oven is heating up as high as the body count…

Jules Capshaw is still chewing over her husband Carlos’s return to Ashland, Oregon. Could there be too many cooks in the kitchen? Whatever is stirring between those two will have to wait. Despite the Oregon Shakespeare Festival being dark for the winter, the bakeshop is bustling, the dough is rolling, and there’s no rest for the weary…especially when murder is thrown into the mix.

When Mindy Nolan, the owner of a new restaurant in town, turns up dead, the batter at hand thickens. Jules knows that there was bad blood between Mindy and others in town, and tracking down the killer could prove to be an unwelcome treat. And to top it all off, there’s Carlos, who is pleading—with those delicious dark eyes and sexy Spanish accent—for Jules to take him back. Is home where the heart is or will she make a fresh start…and risk getting burned?

Dollycas’s Thoughts

There’s a new restaurant in the Shakespeare part of town and the only thing that blends this restaurant with the rest of the businesses in the area is its name ShakesBurgers. The facade of the building has been updated and is ultramodern and that has more than one of the merchant’s panties in a twist, especially Rosalind Gates, president of Ashland Downtown Association. The new owner Mindy Nolan doesn’t seem to care and has no plans to bow to their wishes even after a town meeting.

Jules notices the door of ShakesBurgers is ajar the next while she is out making her deliveries and when she steps inside she makes a ghastly discovery. Mindy dead on the floor and her partner trying to save her. Calling in her favorite police officers, Jules tries to shake off what she had seen, but can’t let it go.

Jules is also trying to make a huge decision regarding Carlos. Can they have a life together? What does that mean for her career?

______

I am really enjoying the characters in this series and the way they continue to evolve. All the relationships are captivating and interesting. The dialogue rings true. The story is very character-driven as most of the focus was on their lives at the restaurant Torte. Jules’ life is filled even before adding hubby Carlos to the mix. As in the last book, Carlos seems to fit in with everyone everywhere he goes. He is supportive and happy to do anything he can for Jules, her mom, and the restaurant. Carlos and Jules aren’t the only ones working on their relationship. Romance seems to be blooming a Torte for another couple too. And the Professor and Jules’ mom may be entering a new area of their relationship.

One of my favorite things in the book is the way the business is expanding with things like the Sunday Supper. Carlos takes the reins this time and really pulls out the stops. Torte is facing real situations, cash crunches, needing new equipment, etc. and I like that everything is not always rosy and they need to work hard every day for success.

To me the mystery this time was pretty basic. I was laser-focused on the real culprit very early in the story, I was just waiting for Jules, Thomas, and the Professor to catch up. I wish there had been a little more depth and more investigating but I was very pleased with the exciting ending.

As with all books in this series, the food described in just awesome and there are recipes at the back of the book.

Strong characters with the perfect amount of humor and romance mixes together with a satisfactory whodunit in Caught Bread Handed. I am looking forward to reading Fudge and Jury next.

Cozy Wednesday with A R Kennedy – Author of R.I.P. in Reykjavík: A Traveler Cozy Mystery – #GuestPost / #Review / #Giveaway – Great Escapes Book Tour

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!
I am excited to have A.R. Kennedy visit today!

R.I.P. in Reykjavík: A Traveler Cozy Mystery
by A R Kennedy

Have you ever traveled with your mother? I have and we have had a lot of fun.

We’ve gotten lost in Boston. We’ve enjoyed mojitos and nachos in Miami. We’ve frozen in Chicago. While traveling, we’ve watched baseball games in nine different Major League Baseball stadiums.

But my relationship with my mother is far different than the one Naomi has with her mother, Deirdre. One, my mother raised me, while Naomi was primarily raised by her father.

I think a lot of daughters would enjoy a trip with their mother but I don’t know too many single women who would be thrilled to learn that their travel companions on vacation are a wedding party. Especially when you’re traveling with their judgmental mother.

Naomi isn’t looking forward to traveling with her mother at all. (You’ll have to read R.I.P. in Reykjavik to find out how they wound up traveling together.) If she could run away when she meets the others on their tour, a wedding party, she would. Especially since when she met Milo, the groom, she thought he was single, attractive and interested in her! Akward-ness all around.

Will this mother-daughter duo find a way to co-exist and enjoy their Icelandic vacation?  And solve a murder? Check out R.I.P in Reykjavik to find out!

Thank you for stopping by today, Alicia!

Traveling with your family can be murder.
One wedding party + one estranged mother = another vacation that goes array for Naomi.

Naomi is off on another international vacation. She thinks traveling with her mother will be the most difficult part of her trip until she meets the rest of the tour group—a wedding party. It only gets worse when she finds the groom dead. Everyone’s a suspect on her Icelandic tour of this stunning country.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

It’s time for another adventure for Naomi and this time her mother invites herself along paying no attention to the packing instructions or itinerary. Naomi immediately knows she will have her hand’s fulls when her mother starts flirting with every man she meets. Plus her mother is just full of barbs at her daughter. It should be a great trip.

They arrive in Iceland and meet the rest of their group, a wedding party complete with the bride’s parents and maid of honor and best man on the honeymoon trip. Their very first excursion ends on a bad note with one of the wedding party dead in the water literally. With everyone now a suspect, and Naomi with one murder mystery solved under her belt, she starts investigating this Icelandic. murder knowing the killer could be anyone.

______

This is another fun mystery from A.R. Kennedy.

I love traveling with Naomi. She goes off the beaten path and takes us to such interesting places. First, on a Safari, and now to Iceland in this story. I have always heard that Iceland should be called Greenland and Greenland should be called Iceland and Naomi confirms that. Swimming in the freezing waters and hiking the glaciers were just two excursions I would love to have tried. Ms. Kennedy does an excellent job taking us to exciting places, even without a murder.

The author has introduced a very interesting group of characters this time. Parents and friends along on a honeymoon are not my idea of a good time, but it sure works for this story. I did love that Naomi’s sister Charlotte was still part of the story, albeit from afar. Her mother texting her sister basically tattling on every move Naomi makes and Naomi texting Charlotte on ways to deal with her mother. It really added humor to the whole book.

The mystery is like a closed room mystery with all the suspects known and amateur sleuth Naomi following the clues and uncovering secrets. It is well-plotted with a twisted ending that caught me by surprise.

As soon as I finished R.I.P. in Reykjavík I knew I would have to wait patiently for Naomi’s next journey, but waiting is hard. I can’t wait for my next virtual trip no matter where Naomi takes us.

The Secrets of Bones: A Mystery (A Jazz Ramsey Mystery) by Kylie Logan #Review @StMartinsPress @KylieLoganBks

The Secrets of Bones: A Mystery (A Jazz Ramsey Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
2nd in Series
Setting- Ohio
Publisher: Minotaur Books (May 5, 2020)
Hardcover: 336 pages
ISBN-10: 1250180597
ISBN-13: 978-1250180599
Kindle ASIN: B07Z2LFM12

Second in a new series from national bestselling author Kylie Logan, The Secrets of Bones is a riveting mystery following Jazz Ramsey as she trains a cadaver dog.

Assembly Day at St. Catherine’s dawns bright and cloudless as professional woman gather from all around Ohio to talk to the schoolgirls about their careers ranging from medicine, to NASA, to yoga. Jazz Ramsey has also signed up to give the girls a taste of her lifelong passion: cadaver dog training. Her adorable new puppy Wally hasn’t been certified yet, so she borrows the fully-trained Gus from a friend and hides a few bones in the unused fourth floor of the school for him to find.

The girls are impressed when Gus easily finds the first bone, but then Gus heads confidently to a part of the floor where Jazz is sure no bones are hidden—at least not any that she’s put there. But Gus is a professional, and sure enough, behind a door that no one has opened in ages, is a human skeleton. Jazz recognizes the necklace the skeleton is wearing, and that it belonged to Bernadette Quinn, an ex-teacher at the school who’d quit her job abruptly one Christmas break. But now it seems Bernadette never left the school at all, and her hiding place makes it clear: this was murder.

Bernadette in life had been a difficult personality, and so there are a plethora of suspects inside the school and out of it. As Jazz gets closer to the truth she can’t help but wonder if someone might be dogging her footsteps…

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Jazz Ramsey works at St. Catherine’s Preparatory Academy, an all-girls school as an administrative assistant. She has been working on Assembly Day at the school where professional women come into speak about careers to the students. Jazz is given the chance at the last minute to share her passion, cadaver dog training. She is training her new Airedale puppy but brings along Gus, a fully trained dog as well. After hiding a few bones for Gus, the students are pretty impressed with his first find. His second find confuses Jazz because it is focused behind a door where she didn’t hide anything.

After clearing the room of students, Jazz opens the door to find a grisly discovery, a human skeleton wearing a necklace Jazz immediately recognizes. The necklace belonged to Bernadette Quinn, a teacher who left the school at Christmas break 3 years ago.

Now, tons of questions arise. The teacher had been difficult during her time at St. Catherine’s. Very demanding of her students and not friendly with her co-workers. She was on probation when she submitted her resignation. Jazz can immediately think of several suspects other than the police’s prime suspect. She just needs to dig into all the clues, but she is putting herself in danger too. She knows when all the secrets are revealed, the killer will be revealed as well.

_______

I enjoy these characters. Jazz is a strong protagonist. She is clever and thinks on her feet. She has the full trust of her boss, Sister Eileen. She is dealing with such huge things in her personal life too and needs a little TLC. Her best friend, Sarah Carrington, an art teacher at the school, tries to keep Jazz grounded, focused on her rekindling romance with Nick, but also is a great sounding board. These characters continue to evolve nicely throughout the book. The dogs did not play much of an integral part after the body was found, but Wally is a curious pup still coming into his own. It will be fun to watch him continue his training.

The mystery was pretty straight forward until the author served up a nice twist. I was tuned in early to where the story was leading but the clues were not adding up right. A murder at Catholic school really drew me in, the delay in finding the body believable, the investigation was intriguing, and that final twist set everything into place.

The author has a wonderful descriptive writing style which was so important in this story. A little-used part of the school is pressed into service and it needed to have a backstory and reason for its lack of use. Ms. Logan presented this in a believable way and depicted the area so well with her words.

The cadaver dog training is something that interests me. I hope there is more of that in the next book.

The Secrets of Bones is a great addition to this series. Quite the whodunit!

HAPPY SUNDAY EVERYONE!

Grateful, Thankful, Blessed

I completed my 3rd round of chemo last week with a few of the normal side effects but I have noticed that it is the rest week in between that is pivotal. I seem to fatigue easily and need to take more breaks but by the weekend I am back to myself and ready for the next batch the following Tuesday.

I am really thankful Mr. Dollycas is working from home. He makes sure I get the right meds on time, that there is food to eat to stem off nausea, his continued support of telling me to listen to my body and rest when needed. I do my best, but sometimes that reinforcement is needed to make me toe the line and put myself first for now. Who knew there could be upsides this awful pandemic?

Thank you to everyone keeping me in your thoughts and prayers.

Welcome to Torte-a small-town family bakeshop where the treats are killer good.

It’s the dead of winter in the sleepy town of Ashland, which means no tourists-and fewer customers-for Jules Capshaw and her bakery. But when she’s asked to cater an off-season retreat for the directors of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, business starts heating up…until Jules finds a dead body in the freezer.

Someone at the retreat has apparently iced the bartender, a well-known flirt with a legendary temper-that is, before a killer beat him to the punch. Then, from out of nowhere, Jules’s own ex-husband shows up at the shop-and soon becomes a suspect. With accusations piling up higher than the snow-and thicker than a chocolate mousse cake-Jules has to think outside the (recipe) box to find the real culprit…and make sure he gets his just desserts.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Winter in Oregon can be temperamental and the means business is a bit slow with no tourists visiting the Torte bakery. So when Jules is asked to cater a retreat by Lance, the head of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for the board of directors at a resort up in the woods she gladly accepts.

A huge snowstorm sets in soon after everyone arrives, but that does stop 1 surprise guest from arriving just a bit later. Jules is shocked when her estranged husband Carlos comes walking through the door. They have so many things to work through and she doesn’t know how they can do that with all the responsibilities she has for the retreat. Thankfully she has brought along Torte employee and aspiring chef Sterling who immediately hits it off with Carlos.

Things take a deadly turn when Jules discovers the body of the bartender that had been pushy, obnoxious, and flirtatious since the moment she arrived the next morning. He was definitely up to something underhanded too. With the snow, it is going to take time for the police to arrive but Jules calls in her favorite officers Thomas, her high school boyfriend, now deputy detective, and the Professor, her mother’s boyfriend, and lead Ashland detective, who slog through the snow to come to her aid. She is totally taken aback when they think Carlos is a prime suspect. Jules is juggling a lot but she knows there are better suspects than her husband so she is going to cut through all the clues and figure out who really iced the bartender.

______

I really got a kick out of this story and my mouth was watering too! The food created in this story was so tempting, oh to have a wood stove!

But I am getting ahead of myself.

The focus this time was really on Carlos and Jules with Sterling really striving. Sterling becomes Jules’ sounding board while twisting around the clues to the murder and her true right hand in the kitchen. They make a great team. He also gives Jules the time she needs to try to set her relationship with Carlos in a better direction.

We also meet the owner of the retreat and the maintenance man along with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival board of directors and Lance’s new assistant. All the characters are defined and most continue to develop throughout the story. I wanted to know more about one character but maybe they will show up in a future story.  The dialogue is snappy and believable.

The story had a great flow and the mystery was strong and well-plotted. My focus was pulled to three characters but I was still surprised by the big reveal.

I really enjoy the author’s writing style. It is very descriptive. She really brought everything so clear in my mind’s eye, the Lake of the Woods Resort, the weather, even the ride up to the resort, the kitchen, the food, and the people. It was so easy to escape right into this story.

The author leaves Carlos and Jules’ relationship still in flux which made me pick up book four, Caught Bread Handed almost immediately. I am very excited to get all caught up on this series!

Botched Butterscotch (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery) by Amanda Flower #Review / #Giveaway

BOTCHED BUTTERSCOTCH
Botched Butterscotch (An Amish Candy Shop Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
Short Story (Novella)
Setting – Ohio
Publisher: Kensington Books (April 28, 2020)
Print Length: 78 pages
Kindle ASIN: B082DVYHM8

A slice of intrigue. . .

Mother’s Day is a sweet and busy time at the candy shop Bailey King runs with her Amish grandmother. This year is extra special, because Bailey’s parents are visiting Harvest, Ohio. Bailey’s father has rarely returned since leaving the Amish faith over thirty years ago, but Bailey is confident that the right treats can help sugarcoat any awkwardness. For Mother’s Day Tea at the local church, she’s whipping up her mom’s favorite: butterscotch fudge. All’s going well, until a sticky-fingered thief makes off with the money raised for a local women’s support group.

While Bailey tries to discover who stuck their fingers in the cookie jar, she encounters an assortment of suspects. It doesn’t help that Juliet, mother of Deputy Aiden Brody, is conspiring with Bailey’s mom to plan Aiden and Bailey’s wedding…though they’re not even engaged! Can Bailey find the culprit before events—both criminal and personal—boil over into disaster?

Recipe Included!

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Need to feed your cozy craving. A brief visit to Harvest is the perfect way to do just that. Especially when there is Butterscotch Fudge involved.

A rare visit from Bailey’s parents happens just in time for Mother’s Day and a Mother’s Day tea fundraiser at a local church. Aiden’s mother Juliet has her own plan for the weekend . . . Aiden and Bailey’s wedding. Remember they are not even engaged yet, but Juliet is like a steamroller when she sets her mind on something and she is sure Bailey’s mom will agree it is time the couple takes the big step.

When the money raised at the Mother’s Day tea goes missing, the leader of the local women’s support group, Polly Anne Lind is frantic, without that money she may have to close. Bailey offers to help the young police officer with the case even though her parents beg her to leave the crime to the proper authorities. Not going to happen, she already has suspects she wants to talk to.

____________

This is a clever and entertaining story that allows readers a short visit with our favorite Amish Candy Shop characters. Having Bailey’s parents visit was an extra treat. Silas King has rarely visited since he left the Amish life behind. It is also the first time they are meeting Deputy Aiden Brody, his mother, and her pet pig, Jethro. The meeting is PRICELESS!

Amanda Flower is such a talented writer, long story, or short, she absolutely excels. Well developed characters, intriguing mysteries, and delicious treats to tempt our taste buds. Botched Butterscotch is charming little cozy that will hold readers over until Marshmallow Malice hits store shelves May 26, 2020.

Amanda Flower, a two-time Agatha Award-nominated mystery author, started her writing career in elementary school when she read a story she wrote to her sixth-grade class and had the class in stitches with her description of being stuck on the top of a Ferris wheel. Cozy Wednesday featuring Secrets of the Treasure King (Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast) by Terry Ambrose #Review / #Giveaway

Welcome to Cozy Wednesday!

I am so happy to share the lastest Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast Mystery with you today!

Secrets of the Treasure King (Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast)
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Setting – California
Publisher: Satori (April 29, 2020)
Print Length: 261 pages
Digital ASIN: B085DC4ZVS

The Seaside Cove rumor mill is buzzing about the captain of The Treasure King. He claims to know the location of the San Manuel, a four-hundred-year-old sunken Spanish galleon with a cargo worth millions. And now, he’s dead, the victim of a speargun attack.

When the police ask B&B owner Rick Atwood to consult in the investigation, he has mixed feelings. Consulting for the police is not the problem. He’s done it before. The problem is his eleven-year-old daughter, Alex.

Alex is fearless, precocious, and fueled by a strong sense of girl power. She’s also convinced the cops will never find the killer without her help, so she launches her own investigation—and quickly becomes a candidate for Seaside Cove’s youngest felon.

Now, unless Rick can solve the case with the clues Alex found illegally, his daughter might face charges of breaking-and-entering, the treasure of the San Manuel will be lost to pirates, and a killer could get away with murder.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

A huge ship has pulled into Seaside Cove and the captain claims he knows the true location of the sunken ship San Manuel with a cargo said to be worth millions. After causing some dramas at The Crooked Mast the captain is found floating in the marina.

With a new officer on the force and several other cases, the police ask B&B owner Rick Atwood to assist with the case. He knows his 11-year-old daughter Alex is going to want to help too, as she has done with previous cases. He does his best to keep her focused on the less dangerous elements of the case, but headstrong Alex always seems to end up finding a key clue and getting herself trapped in a precarious situation.

Could she end up behind bars this time? Will the police be able to use the information she found? Will this be the final straw for the police and Rick? Will it ruin the relationship he is building with Marquetta?

There is so much in this story to love and one moment where I wanted to smack the author!

Let’s start with what I loved.

Marquetta and Rick go out in public as a couple, it doesn’t go as planned but that is a big step. She also learns something about her past that has been troubling her for years.

A new officer joins the force and she also has a past with Marquetta.

Alex’s journal entries show she is growing and starting to understand the consequences of her actions. I said starting, she still is impulsive and fearless but by the end of this story, I saw some awareness.

Alex and Marquetta are cupid’s helpers as they try to bring two elderly people staying at the B&B together.

The mystery is really well done. Key observations play a major role in solving the case. Several suspects have secrets and questionable alibis which keeps everyone including me guessing.

There is a major event that puts a smile on my face.

Now the part when I wanted to smack the author. 🙂

A harrowing event takes place at the end of a chapter near the end of the book featuring two beloved characters and it is not referenced again for two chapters. Those two chapters were filled with drama of their own but seriously it was hard to not skip ahead and come back. It really stole my focus as I tried to keep reading the pages in order.

I really love the characters in these books. Each new adventure with them is entertaining and fun. Mr. Ambrose always delivers a mystery that hooks me from the start and holds on tight.

If you haven’t read previous books in this series, Marquetta gave Alex a journal as soon as she arrived at the B&B. The story goes back and forth between Rick’s point of view and Alex’s along with her journal. I do suggest reading the series from the start for maximum enjoyment, but the author gives enough background for each to be read on their own.

Secrets of the Treasure King is a Perfect Escape!

Caterer River Holloway cooks like a dream and is known on Shell Island as a “finder” of things. Which is why a desperate mother begs River to track down her grown son, Chili Bolz, who’s vanished.

Deputy Lance Hamlyn can’t find the missing man, so he teams up with River. The missing person case boils over into something frightening when Chili’s mother falls victim to a brutal assault. Worse, her dying words incriminate River’s friends in both kidnapping and, now, murder. River soon finds herself caught in an unsavory recipe for disaster.

Despite catering events and the return of her absentee boyfriend, River finds the number of suspects growing longer than her food shopping list. Along the way she befriends a black cat who becomes her crime-solving partner. River must locate Chili and discover who killed his mother before her own goose is quite literally cooked.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

River Holloway has her own catering business and is building up a nice list of clients but her friend and fish source Chili Bolz has gone missing. His mother contacts River and pleads with her to find her son. She had recently lost one son and can’t handle losing another.

River is surprised when Deputy Lance Hamlyn suggests they team up to find Chili. She is even more surprised when he continues to hit on her knowing she had a boyfriend.

When Chili’s mother is attacked and killed River is heartbroken and scared she is in over her head but she can’t give up and the list of suspects grows and she notices some strange happenings. Can she find Chili? his mother’s killer? or will she be the next victim?

Set on Shell Island we meet a group of eclectic characters. River Holloway is a great protagonist. She is a dedicated friend with a huge heart. She takes her commitments seriously and she is one heck of a chef. Her relationship with her boyfriend Pete has been a little rocky but moves in the right direction within these pages. Chili’s mother, Estelle Bolz was River’s mom’s best friend and she grew up close to Chili and his brother Kale. (These names just made me laugh.) Kale was lost at sea and presumed dead six months ago. Estelle’s brutal attack just broke my heart.  She was a strong woman who always did what she thought was best for her family. We meet several other residents of Shell Island and all are very well crafted and many fell on River’s and my suspect list. River also adopts a black cat who is a very interesting character in his own right.

The story is full of twists and turns and very well-plotted. River finds herself smack dab in the middle of situations she never could have imagined. Ms. Touissaint was written a complex mystery with a myriad of moving parts. The drama peaks and flows as necessary for the story supported by strong subplots.

The author realistically captures life on a small island and people working to make ends meet while also introducing people who have the means to use River’s catering services. I felt the dialogue was true to life and enjoyed the imagery created by the author’s words.

My only sticking point was a couple of important things happened before this story started. River’s mother had recently passed away, and River and Pete’s romance seems to have a lot of history we are in the dark about. I hope we learn more in future stories so readers can feel more attached to these main characters.

Bonus – A crab cake recipe and more and the end of the book!

This series is off to a strong start with Seas The Day! River and Pete have caught my attention and I want to know more. I am excited about future books and the capers they will find themselves mixed up in.
