Cozy Wednesday with Author Ellery Adams (Giveaway too!)

Since starting my blog almost two years ago I have “met” some really good people. The “met” is in quotes because I only know these people via the internet but still call these people my friends. They have been there for me through thick and thin with just the right words, a virtual hug, a silly picture, sharing my joys and picking me up when I stumble. The geography is the only thing that sets these people apart from the friends I have here in Fall River. Ellery is one of those friends who if we didn’t have the miles between us I could see us as real life friends as well.

I am so excited she is here today sharing with us something I myself have wondered about. So get a cup of coffee and relax and enjoy a visit with my friend Ellery Adams.

Welcome Ellery!!!

Hi Lori, I am happy to be here.

Am I Jealous of My Heroine?

By Ellery Adams

A reader asked me this question recently and I found it fascinating. What she really wanted to know was does my character do things I’d be afraid to do? Does she have more fun? Is she more adventurous? Et cetera.

First of all, though Olivia and I are both in our early forties, love animals, and grew up with the ocean as our back yard, we’re really quite different.

For example, Olivia is standoffish. After years of being followed by the paparazzi, the oak barrel heiress values privacy above all other things. And while she’s emerging from her shell of solitude and I spend much of my time alone creating novels, I cherish my relationships with others. I’d be nothing without them.

Another thing Olivia would never do is join Facebook. The idea of chatting with complete strangers who share common interests would have no appeal to her. I love it! It’s brought me closer to so many readers, to so many wonderful people, like your fabulous blog owner (xoxo).

However, I would love to be able to drop into Olivia’s five-star restaurant, The Boot Top Bistro, and take my pick of anything on the menu. I’d love to live in her house overlooking the Atlantic, and be able to stroll around the charming seaside town of Oyster Bay, North Carolina whenever I wanted to!

But Olivia might actually be jealous of me, because her lifelong dream is to become a published author. I can check that off my list, but I can also understand her determination to succeed at that goal. Maybe the more she learns about love and friendship, the better she’ll be at creating fictional relationships?

Until then, she can live the life of a tall, thin, gorgeous heiress and I’ll be me. I get to live vicariously through her after all!

And for you, my friends, I have a gift. Someone posting a comment will win a signed copy of THE LAST WORD!

So please tell me which character you’d like to be for a day and maybe you’ll win!

Happy Holidays from Olivia, Captain Haviland, and the Bayside Book Writers!

~Ellery

Thank you so much Ellery for being here today!!! and for offering an autographed copy of The Last Word! Happy Holidays my friend, I see awesome book sales as one of your Christmas presents!!!

Olivia Limoges and the Bayside Book Writers are excited about Oyster Bay’s newest resident: bestselling novelist Nick Plumley, who’s come to work on his next book. But when Olivia stops by Plumley’s rental she finds that he’s been strangled to death. Her instincts tell her that something from the past came back to haunt him, but she never expects that the investigation could spell doom for one of her dearest friends…

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I have loved all the books in this series but this one is the best so far and brings to light the authors amazing growth as a writer. Ellery Adams takes a little snippet of North Carolina history, unknown to most people, and masterfully weaves a mystery featuring the characters we have gotten to know and love right into that history making it relevant today. It is absolutely brilliant.

The way the mystery unfolds surprised me but it just flowed so naturally it couldn’t have played out any other way.

Ellery writes books I really get caught up in, yes to use my tagline, I “escape” effortlessly into her stories, like I am actually smelling the ocean, feeling the wind and hearing the ocean waves hitting the beach. I used to think it was because the best vacation our family ever had was a week spent at Caswell Beach, North Carolina, several years ago so I already had a picture of this seaside town in my mind, but reading this book I realized it was the author’s words taking me there, not some old memory. In fact if we ever returned I wouldn’t be surprised to find someone just like Olivia treasure hunting along the beach will her canine friend by her side.

It is always the right time of year to take a mini vacation to Oyster Bay. I promise you will enjoy every minute of your trip.

Why Buy The Cow Reading Challenge 2012

This is an entirely new challenge for me because a fabulous friend recently sent me my very own Kindle. I have finally figured out how to work everything and have actually read 3 books, one of which was a freebie, meeting the criteria for this challenge. Entering this challenge will have me using my Kindle more and more while still allowing me to still read “the printed word” and share my printed books with you in giveaways.

I will be entering at the Coupon Clipper Level of 12 free e-books and we will see how I do.

Here is how it works:
Should you choose to participate in this challenge, your goal is to read at least twelve (12) legally obtained FREE e-books. While twelve is the minimum there is no maximum limit.

Anyone can join. You don’t have to be a blogger, and you don’t have to live in the United States.

Any E-Reader will work for this challenge, including: iPad, Kindle, Nook, Kobo, Sony Reader, enTourage.

Please Note: If you don’t have an e-reading device, you can still join in with Amazon’s Free Kindle Reading Apps which you can download for your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, Blackberry and more.

The challenge runs from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012. You can join at anytime.

e-books in ANY genre count for this challenge as long as it was FREE at the time that you downloaded it.

Every month in 2012, I will make a post for the Why Buy the Cow? Reading Challenge 2012 so you can link your reviews. Based on participation, monthly link ups may be combined.

Those that link their reviews will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a different prize each month, such as an Amazon or Barnes & Noble Gift Card, a bookmark, or a GelaSkins for your e-Reader.

Challenge Guidelines:
If you have a blog, create a post announcing your participation in the challenge. Please include a link back to this post.
Non bloggers: participate by linking up your profile URL from the site you plan to post your reviews on such as Goodreads, Shelfari, LibraryThing, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.
When you post your book review, you MUST reveal how you obtained the free & legal download. Please make your source clear.

You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them.

Crossovers to other reading challenges is acceptable, but ARCs/galley e-books DO NOT count. Again, this is a Reading Challenge to read as many of the FREE e-books legally offered for your e-reader. To get started, check out the Top 100 Free books on Amazon, or the Free e-books on Barnes & Noble.
Any linked reviews that do not meet the guidelines will not be entered into the monthly drawing for the prize of the month.

Cozy Mystery Challenge 2012

Yes, it’s another Cozy Mystery Challenge, this one is hosted by Deb at Debbie’s Book Bag. I am addicted to both challenges and cozies so I am also joining this one at the Super Sleuth Level too.

This and the Cruisin’ Thru Cozies Challenge are each a bit different so if you are not cozy crazy like me, be sure to pick the one that works best for you, but don’t be afraid to sign up for both like me as they both have different levels.

THE RULES

~ Sign-Ups for this challenge will run from December 4, 2011 to February 4, 2012. (This will give those interested two months to sign-up in order to be counted in the challenge)
~ Deb would prefer participants to subscribe via e-mail or twitter for updates (not required, just handy!)
~ The Challenge will begin on January 1 and run through December 31 of 2012. (Books should be read during this time period)
~ There will be four levels of participation. Each participant MUST choose a level, if they read more that’s great… just don’t go below the level you choose or I can’t count it for the grand prize.

Level 1 Snooper: 1 to 3 Cozy Mysteries
Level 2 Gumshoe: 4 to 6 Cozy Mysteries
Level 3 Private-Eye: 7 to 9 Cozy Mysteries
Level 4 Super Sleuth: 10 to 12 Cozy Mysteries

~ You do not have to have a blog to participate, but you must choose a place to post your reviews. I must be able to follow your links back to the place where you post your review. You may suggest alternate locations to me and I will decide if they meet the criteria of the challenge. Reviews will be accepted from these locations:

Your blog
Facebook
Goodreads
LibraryThing
Amazon
Barnes & Noble

~ Participants may read in a variety of different formats: print, audio, e-book, Arc’s, library books, books from your own collections. Most anything will count as long as it’s a cozy!
Here’s a great definition of a cozy mystery.

Deb will be posting a Bi-Monthly post for challenge reviews. (Jan. & Feb., March & April, etc.) Participants will be asked to post a link to any cozy review they posted during each two month period. You don’t have to post a link every time and you can catch up at any time if you feel you are behind.
~ Deb will be sending out e-mail reminders to challenge participants when the two-month post goes up. Just to help you keep in mind that the challenge is still going on.
~ There will be six mini-giveaways through out the year. If you post a review link for a given two month period you will be eligible to win! Prizes will be announced at the time of the mini-giveaway.
~There will also be other mini-challenges and incentives going on throughout the year (For example: Mini Challenge: Read a cozy mystery set during Halloween, Read a cozy mystery will a male protagonist etc.) and there will be prizes for these as well.
~ There will be one grand-prize. Participants who meet the guidelines for their level of participation will be eligible to win the grand prize: A cozy mystery series (Up to Five books). Deb will also allow some mixing and matching if you would prefer. The winner will be chosen January 1st 2013 and prizes will be mailed out by the middle of the month. She will be using random.org to choose the winner!

Does this sound like a challenge you would like to try. Head over to Debbie’s Book Bag and fill out the form today!!

Playing The Hand She’s Dealt by David Fingerman

Playing The Hand She’s Dealt
Published by L & L Dreamspell

This is a sequel to David Fingerman’s Silent Kill.

Louise Miller has left the police force and is trying to get her life on track as she struggles to overcome the terror she has survived. She is unemployed and becoming addicted to gambling. How could her life get any worse? Coming home and finding dead man sitting on her sofa is definitely worse. The man being someone she arrested before resigning from the police department makes it twice as bad.

On top of all that the killer is obsessed with destroying Louise piece by painful piece. Threatening not only her life but the lives of the people she loves. She has no choice but the hunt this madman down on her own.

Dollycas’s Thoughts
I read this book the same way I read Silent Kill, all in one sitting, with just a couple of small breaks to gather by wits. This author has a way of writing that amazes me. The story unfolds before your eyes like you are watching it on the big screen. There are places that will make you shiver and others that will make you shake, some that may even bring a smile to your face, but I guarantee you will not be able to put it down.

Louise Miller will be someone you care about as she has flaws like every one of us. She lies to her partner and to her brother to try and keep them safe. The relationship between Louise and Grant gets very interesting as they both have their eyes opened. And Peanut, the dog even his mother wouldn’t love, works his way into your heart.

In Silent Kill I was drawn in by the graphic and gory nature of the writing about the serial killer. In this story I was more drawn in by the growth and relationships among all of the characters and the mystery of tracking down the killer. As is the case with books in a series each one tends to be better than the last. In this case both books are excellent but in different ways. In the sequel the characters are growing naturally and we become more entrenched in their lives, along with a masterfully crafted mystery. It makes me wonder where Mr. Fingerman may be taking us in the future. I know he is at work on book three and I can’t wait to see what Louise get herself into next.

150+ Reading Challenge 2012

Hosted by My Overstuffed Bookshelf

Last year I took part in My Overstuffed Bookshelf’s 100+ Reading Challenge but I did not link up every review, I just did a monthly wrap-up. This year in addition to the monthly wrap-up I will keep track of my books read the Challenges page here on my blog. Just click the Challenges Tab at the top of the page to see what I am reading. I will also be tracking my books read on GoodReads. So far in 2011 I have read 183 books so hopefully I can keep up that pace going into 2012.

DETAILS/RULES:

1. The goal is to read 150 or more books. Anyone can join. You don’t need a blog to participate. Posting on GoodReads or wherever you post your reviews is good enough.

2. Allowed are: Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Manga, Graphic Novels, Library books, Novellas, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts.

What doesn’t count: Individual short stories or individual books in the Bible and comic books.

3. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

4. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

5. Challenge begins January 1st, 2012 thru December 31, 2012. Books started before the 1st do not count. You can join at anytime.

6. Click the picture or the link at the top to go to the sign up page. When you sign up under Linky, put the direct link to your post where your books will be listed. What’s In A Name Challenge 2012

This will be my second year doing this challenge and hope you will all try it. It is a lot of fun finding books to match the categories. Just click on the picture above to join the fun!!

Here’s How It Works

Between January 1 and December 31, 2012, read one book in each of the following categories:

  • A book with a topographical feature (land formation) in the title: Black Hills, Purgatory Ridge, Emily of Deep Valley
  • A book with something you’d see in the sky in the title: Moon Called, Seeing Stars, Cloud Atlas
  • A book with a creepy crawly in the title: Little Bee, Spider Bones, The Witches of Worm
  • A book with a type of house in the title: The Glass Castle, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, Ape House
  • A book with something you’d carry in your pocket, purse, or backpack in the title: Sarah’s Key, The Scarlet Letter, Devlin Diary
  • A book with a something you’d find on a calendar in the title: Day of the Jackal, Elegy for April, Freaky Friday, Year of Magical Thinking

The book titles are just suggestions, you can read whatever book you want to fit the category.

Other Things to Know
Books may be any form (audio, print, e-book).
Books may overlap other challenges.
Books may not overlap categories; you need a different book for each category.
Creativity for matching the categories is not only allowed but encouraged.
You do not have to make a list of books before hand.
You do not have to read through the categories in any particular order.

On January 1, Beth will publish 7 posts, each with a Mr. Linky (one for each category and one for your wrap-up post), on her blog so you’ll have a place post links to your reviews (bloggers) or leave comments (non-bloggers) as you finish up each category.
You’ll be able to find these posts during the year by clicking on the button in the sidebar.

Tip: If you’re ever struggling to find a title to match a category, check out what other people have read so you can get ideas or be inspired. And remember to be creative.

I will be tracking my progress on the Challenges Page.
Just click on the tab at the top of the page!
